5 Short Speeches about the Value of Time
Time is a precious resource that passes quickly, often without notice. We frequently take it for granted, assuming we’ll always have more. However, time is limited, and how we choose to spend it shapes our lives significantly.
This article presents five speeches that explore the value of time from different angles. Each one offers unique insights and perspectives to help you appreciate the importance of using your time wisely. As you read, consider how you can apply these ideas to make the most of every moment in your own life.
Short Speeches about the Value of Time
These speeches offer varied perspectives on time’s value, suitable for different occasions and audiences.
1. The Currency of Life
Ladies and gentlemen,
Time is the most valuable currency we possess. Unlike money, which can be earned, borrowed, or inherited, time is a finite resource that’s constantly depleting. Every second that passes is gone forever, never to be reclaimed.
Think about how you spend your money. You’re careful with it, right? You budget, save, and invest wisely. Now, apply that same mindset to your time. Are you investing it in activities that truly matter? Are you saving some for self-care and personal growth? Or are you wasting it on things that don’t align with your values and goals?
Just as you wouldn’t carelessly throw away your hard-earned cash, don’t waste your precious time. Spend it on relationships that enrich your life. Invest it in learning and growing. Save some for rest and reflection. At the end of your life, you won’t wish you had more money – you’ll wish you had more time.
So start treating your time like the valuable resource it is. Budget it wisely, invest it carefully, and spend it on what truly matters. Because ultimately, time isn’t just money – it’s life itself.
— END OF SPEECH —
Commentary: This speech draws a powerful parallel between time and money, encouraging listeners to value their time as they would their finances. It’s suitable for personal development seminars, career workshops, or as a motivational talk for employees.
2. The Gift of Presence
Dear friends,
In our fast-paced society, we’re often told that time is money. But I’d like to suggest a different perspective: time is love.
When you give someone your time, you’re giving them a portion of your life that you’ll never get back. It’s the most personal gift you can give. Think about it – when you spend time with a friend, play with your child, or care for a loved one, you’re saying, “You matter to me. You’re worth my time.”
But it’s not just about being physically present. It’s about being mentally and emotionally present too. How often have you been with someone, but your mind was elsewhere? Maybe you were checking your phone, thinking about work, or worrying about the future. That’s not really giving your time – it’s just occupying the same space.
True presence means giving your full attention. It means listening without interrupting, observing without judging, and connecting without distractions. It’s in these moments of genuine presence that we create lasting memories, deepen our relationships, and truly touch each other’s lives.
So today, I challenge you to give the gift of your presence. Put away your phone during dinner. Really listen when someone’s talking to you. Be fully there for your loved ones. Because ultimately, the time you’ve given – the love you’ve shared – that’s what people will remember.
Commentary: This heartfelt speech emphasizes the connection between time and love, focusing on the importance of being present. It’s well-suited for family gatherings, relationship seminars, or as a reminder in professional settings about work-life balance.
3. The Miracle of Now
Good evening, everyone.
We often hear people say, “Live in the moment.” But have you stopped to consider why the present moment is so important? Let’s explore this together.
The present moment – right now – is the only time we truly have. The past is gone, existing only in our memories. The future hasn’t arrived yet, living in our imagination. But now, this very instant, is real. It’s where life happens.
Every moment is a crossroads. It’s a chance to make a choice, to take action, to create change. In this moment, you can decide to learn something new, to help someone in need, to take a step towards your dreams. Or you can choose to do nothing, to let the moment pass by unused.
Each moment is also a miracle. Consider this – the odds of you being alive, here and now, are astronomically small. Out of all the possible combinations of genes, all the twists and turns of history, you exist. You’re here, experiencing this unique slice of time that will never come again.
So how will you use this miracle? Will you be fully present in your life? Will you appreciate the beauty around you? Will you seize the opportunities each moment brings?
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. So breathe deeply, friends. Look around you. Feel the miracle of now. And make every moment count.
Commentary: This philosophical speech explores the concept of living in the present moment, emphasizing its importance and potential. It’s appropriate for mindfulness workshops, graduation ceremonies, or as an inspirational talk at retreats.
4. Time: The Great Equalizer
Good morning,
In a society of inequality, where wealth, power, and privilege create divides, there’s one thing that remains constant for all of us: time.
Each day, we all get the same 24 hours. No matter who you are – a CEO or an intern, a celebrity or an average Joe – you can’t buy more time. You can’t save it for later. You can’t borrow it from tomorrow.
This makes time the great equalizer. It’s the one resource we all have in equal measure. The question is, how are you using yours?
Some people use their time to build empires, create art, or change society. Others waste it, letting hours slip by unnoticed. The difference often lies not in talent or opportunity, but in how we choose to use each precious minute.
But here’s the beautiful thing about time – every day is a fresh start. No matter how you used yesterday’s 24 hours, today you get a new set. A new chance to make a difference, to pursue your passions, to be the person you want to be.
So let’s embrace this equality. Let’s recognize that we all have the same opportunity each day to make our mark on the world. Your time is your superpower. How will you use it to make a difference?
We’re all given a certain number of days on this earth. Make each one count. Because at the end of our lives, it’s not the years in our life that count, but the life in our years.
Commentary: This motivational speech uses the concept of time as an equalizer to inspire action and personal responsibility. It’s well-suited for diverse audiences in corporate settings, schools, or community events.
5. The Legacy of Moments
Distinguished guests,
When we think about leaving a legacy, we often focus on grand achievements – the buildings we might construct, the fortunes we might amass, the accolades we might receive. But I’d like to suggest that our true legacy is built in moments, not monuments.
Your legacy is created in how you treat the cashier at the grocery store. It’s in the words of encouragement you offer a struggling colleague. It’s in the bedtime stories you read to your children. These small moments, strung together over a lifetime, form the pattern of who you are and the impact you have on the world.
Every interaction, every decision, every moment is a brush stroke on the canvas of your life. Some might be bold and dramatic, others subtle and nuanced. But each one contributes to the overall picture.
The beauty of this perspective is that it puts the power of legacy-building into everyday actions. You don’t have to wait for some distant future to make your mark. You’re creating your legacy right now, in this very moment.
So ask yourself: What kind of legacy are you building with your moments? Are you using them to spread kindness? To foster understanding? To make the world, even in some small way, a better place?
The way we spend our moments becomes the way we spend our lives. And the way we spend our lives becomes our legacy. So spend your moments wisely, kindly, purposefully. Because in the end, the moments we create for others are the ones that will live on long after we’re gone.
Let’s make every moment count. Let’s build a legacy of love, compassion, and positive change – one moment at a time.
Commentary: This reflective speech reframes the concept of legacy, focusing on the cumulative impact of small actions. It’s ideal for retirement ceremonies, leadership conferences, or as a keynote address at philanthropic events.
Closing Thoughts
Time is a unique and irreplaceable resource. It’s the raw material of life, the canvas on which we paint our experiences, relationships, and accomplishments. By understanding and appreciating its value, we can make more intentional choices about how we use it.
These speeches offer different perspectives on time’s worth – as a currency to be invested wisely, a gift of love to be shared generously, a present moment to be fully experienced, an equalizer that levels the playing field, and the building blocks of our legacy.
As you move forward, carry these ideas with you. Let them inspire you to make the most of every moment, to be present in your life, and to use your time in ways that align with your values and goals. Because ultimately, how we use our time determines the quality and impact of our lives.
Your time is precious. Use it well.

250 Words Essay on Time is Money
Understanding the adage ‘time is money’.
The phrase ‘Time is Money’ is a fundamental principle in the world of business and life, encapsulating the idea of opportunity cost. The concept, attributed to Benjamin Franklin, teaches us that time, like money, is a limited resource that needs to be spent judiciously.
Time as a Finite Resource
Time, in its essence, is a finite resource. We all have 24 hours in a day, and how we choose to spend those hours determines the value we extract from them. The time spent on unproductive activities is time lost, much like money wasted on non-essential items.
Opportunity Cost and Time
The concept of opportunity cost is closely tied to the idea that ‘Time is Money’. It refers to the potential gain that one could have received but gave up in the pursuit of another course of action. If we choose to spend an hour watching television, we forgo the opportunity to read a book, learn a new skill, or earn money.
Time Management and Productivity
Effective time management can lead to increased productivity, just as wise money management can lead to wealth accumulation. Prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and avoiding procrastination are all strategies to make the most of our time.
In conclusion, the adage ‘Time is Money’ is a powerful reminder of the value of our time. By managing it wisely, we can maximize our productivity and opportunities, just as we would by wisely managing our finances. As we grow and evolve, we must remember that every moment counts, and every second spent is an investment in our future.
500 Words Essay on Time is Money
Introduction: the concept of time is money.
The phrase “Time is Money” is a well-known adage that underscores the value of time. It is a principle that has been ingrained in our minds from a young age, often used to emphasize the importance of efficiency and productivity. However, the concept is not just about the literal exchange of time for money. It is a philosophy that carries profound implications for how we perceive and utilize our time.
The Economics of Time
In the realm of economics, the concept of time as money is a cornerstone. Economists perceive time as a resource that, like any other, has opportunity costs. When you spend an hour on a particular activity, you forego the benefits you could have gained by spending that hour on something else. This is the essence of the opportunity cost concept. Therefore, every moment should be spent wisely, as the potential return on investment is not just monetary but also includes personal growth, satisfaction, and happiness.
The adage also underlines the importance of time management. Good time management skills allow us to work smarter, not harder, enabling us to get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Effective time management includes setting goals, prioritizing tasks, and monitoring where our time actually goes. This not only increases our productivity but also provides a sense of control and satisfaction.
The Societal Perspective
From a societal perspective, the phrase “Time is Money” promotes a culture of efficiency. It encourages us to value our time and use it productively. However, it’s important to recognize that not all valuable activities have an immediate or tangible financial return. Activities such as leisure, relaxation, or volunteering can enrich our lives in ways that money cannot, yet they are often undervalued because they don’t directly contribute to monetary gain.
Re-evaluating the Concept
While the phrase “Time is Money” is a powerful tool for emphasizing efficiency and productivity, it’s essential to remember that it’s not a one-size-fits-all rule. We must be cautious not to let it foster a culture of relentless busyness or stress. Instead, we should use it as a reminder that our time is valuable and finite. It’s about making conscious decisions on how we spend our time, balancing productivity with activities that bring us joy and fulfillment.
Conclusion: A Balanced Approach
In conclusion, “Time is Money” is a concept that encourages us to use our time wisely and productively. However, it’s crucial to interpret it in a balanced manner, recognizing that not all valuable activities have a direct monetary return. As we navigate through life, we must strive to balance productivity with personal fulfillment, understanding that the true value of time lies not just in the money it can earn, but also in the experiences and joy it can bring.

Speech On Value Of Time - 10 Lines, Short and Long Speech
- Speech on Value of Time
Imagine a world where time stands still. No clocks tick, no calendars turn, and no deadlines looming. In this world, there would be no sense of urgency or motivation to accomplish anything. This may seem like a paradise, but in reality, it would be a world without purpose or meaning. Time gives our lives purpose and direction, and it is up to us to make the most of it. Time is a precious commodity, something that we can never get back once it has passed.
10 Line Speech on Value of Time
Short speech on value of time, long speech on value of time.
Time is a valuable resource that cannot be replaced or regained once it is lost.
It is important to use our time wisely and efficiently in order to achieve our goals and live a fulfilling life.
Wasting time can have negative consequences, such as missed opportunities or unfulfilled potential.
Time is often equated with money, as it is a limited resource that must be carefully managed.
We should strive to be mindful of the time we have and make the most of every moment.
The value of time can vary depending on the context and circumstances.
Time is often viewed as a cycle, with the present moment representing the only point of control we have.
It is important to balance our use of time between work, leisure, and rest in order to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
It is the most valuable thing we have, yet it is often taken for granted or wasted. In order to achieve our goals, we must learn how to value and appreciate the time that we have, and utilise it in a wise manner to reach our goals.
The concept of the value of time has been recognised and emphasised by many great minds throughout history.

Quotes on Time
One famous quote that speaks to the importance of time is by the Roman philosopher Seneca, who said, "Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind." This quote highlights the idea that time is a fleeting and irreplaceable resource, and it is up to us to make the most of it.
Another well-known saying that speaks to the value of time is "time is money." This saying suggests that time is a valuable commodity that should not be wasted or taken lightly. We often use our time to earn a living and pursue our goals and dreams, so it is important to use it wisely.
Overall, the value of time is an essential concept that we should all strive to understand and appreciate. Whether we are using our time to work, play, or simply rest and recharge, it is important to make the most of every moment and not take it for granted. As the old saying goes, "time and tide wait for no man." By recognising and appreciating the time we have, we can make the most of every moment and achieve our goals.
The value of time is a concept that has been recognised and emphasised by many great minds throughout history. It is a limited and irreplaceable resource that should not be taken for granted or wasted.
One famous quote that captures the essence of the value of time is by the English writer Margaret Thatcher, who said, "I always live in the future. The past is gone, and the future is yet to come. The only time that is mine is the present." This quote highlights the idea that the present moment is all we have and that it is important to make the most of it.
Example of Value of Time
One of the most famous books that explore the concept of time is "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. In this book, the main character embarks on a journey to find his personal legend and discovers the value of time along the way. He learns that time is not just a linear progression but rather a cycle that is constantly repeating itself. He also learns that the present moment is all we have and that it is important to live in the present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.
How to Value Time
One way to appreciate and value the time we have is by setting goals and priorities. This helps us to focus our time and energy on what is most important to us rather than wasting it on activities that do not bring us closer to our goals. For example, if our goal is to become fluent in a foreign language, we may choose to spend our time studying and practising rather than engaging in activities that do not contribute to this goal.
Another way to value our time is by learning to say "no." This may mean turning down invitations or opportunities that do not align with our goals or priorities. While it can be difficult to say no, it is important to remember that our time is a limited and valuable resource that should be used wisely.
The value of time can also be seen in the way we manage our schedules and our time commitments. By being organised and planning ahead, we can ensure that we are using our time efficiently and effectively. This may mean setting aside specific times for work, leisure, and rest in order to achieve a healthy balance in our lives. For example, in the workplace, time is often a limited and valuable resource. Employees are often given deadlines to meet and are expected to be efficient and productive with their time. Companies also value the time of their customers and clients, as timely service and delivery can lead to satisfaction and loyalty.
In addition to valuing our own time, it is also important to respect the time of others. This means showing up on time for appointments and meetings and not wasting the time of others with unnecessary or unimportant tasks. The value of time is an essential concept that can help us to lead more fulfilling and productive lives.

Introduction
We all agree that time is Money, and Money can only be generated by properly and efficiently utilizing our time. The statement equates time with Money, but it’s only half the truth. Some explanations prove that time is more valuable than Money. In this essay, we will make arguments in support of the statement “Time is More Precious than Money.”
Reasons for Time is More Precious than Money
The most valid argument supporting the statement “Time is More Precious than Money” is that Money, once lost, could be regained, but time, if lost, can never be recovered. The amount of Money one has fluctuates with time; you might be poor today, but tomorrow you may be rich, or vice versa.
On the other hand, time is an ever-progressing phenomenon, changing every second I write this line. If for some reason, I decided to stop writing for a couple of minutes or so, then no power in the world could help me go back into those lost minutes. More examples could establish the statement “time is More Precious than Money” as a fact.
Consider an affluent person who urgently needs medical care but cannot get it because he got stuck in a traffic jam. He is caught up in a situation where his whole monetary worth can’t save him the time he needs. Indeed in practical situations like these, time is more precious than Money.
Time is worth more than Money as Money is a commodity that could be lost and regained or vice versa, but time once lost, can’t be regained whatever Money you are willing to spend. Thus it is established that “Time is More Precious than Money.”
Essay on Time is More than Money (400 Words) – Essay 3
Time is always considered more valuable than Money since one can spend time to earn Money, but vice versa is not possible. Money can never add some extra moments in life. Money, if lost, can be earned again, but if time is lost, it could never be recovered unless one believes in the impossible concept of a time machine. Everyone gets a limited time, but only an intelligent person utilizes it fruitful and productive.
Expansion of Phrase “Time is more than money.”
The phrase’s literal meaning showcases the importance of time and how it is considered more valuable than Money. You can do more with a day than a day’s pay. The time spent with our friends, family, and close ones remains in our memories irrespective of whether we have Money. Time is more precious than Money because though a person is a billionaire, he can’t add extra days to his life.
Sometimes the time spent with someone is so priceless that it can’t be bought with Money. It takes time to earn Money, but Money can’t buy a single moment. Everyone has a limited time; one who values it becomes successful, and one who wastes it always complains about its shortage.
Time Vs. Money
Time never comes back once spent, but Money can be earned back once spent. Time availability remains the same for rich and poor, but Money is available to the rich but not the poor. Time cannot be stored, but Money can be stored for some time. Time is always limited and can’t be increased, but Money can be raised by earning more. Time is not constant and keeps on moving, whereas Money could remain constant for some time. Money’s value might decrease over time, but the value of time remains constant forever.
In the materialistic world, people consider Money the most important and valuable thing in life, but they forget the importance of time. Nowadays, people are sacrificing their family time by spending it more on their work, and in this way, they cannot spend quality time with their family. It is also said that people spend time earning Money but don’t get time to spend it. Proper time management always makes a person successful and respectable in society by making him more punctual and improving his quality of life.
Essay on Time is Important than Money (500 Words) – Essay 4
Time is more important than Money; if someone wastes time, s/he will surely lose Money. Moreover, time in a way, is more precious than Money as it cannot be purchased by Money. The time lost, no amount of Money can help you bring it back into your life.
Reason for Time is Important than Money
Time is more valuable than Money, is a fact, and the phrase today is used and acknowledged by millions. There could be thousands of arguments in support of the statement. Time once lost can never be earned back is a truth. You can use your time to make Money, but you can’t buy Money with time. No matter how much Money you are willing to spend, it will not be possible to get back the already gone time.
Ever wonder what makes the difference between success and failure. From a layman to a high-ranking professional, everyone has the same 24 hours at their disposal. How they have used those 24 hours has made all the difference in their lives. A successful person always uses their time efficiently to earn Money and progress. Money is earned through time, and you can’t earn a penny by wasting time. This statement itself establishes that time is more valuable than Money.
Time is given to you, and you have the right to use it the way you want, just like Money. But, there is a difference – if you lose or spend Money, you can always regain it by working a little more. On the other hand, if you lose your time, then no amount of Money in the world can help you but it back. Time once wasted is gone forever and can’t be recovered.
Patients rushing to the hospital to get medical attention know that time is more valuable than Money. He would probably pay any amount to get to the hospital in time; because he knows that he could earn Money once he can save his own life.
Consider an entrepreneur who wants to be on time for their first big business deal. He would probably take the fastest mode of travel, not minding the expenses. Why? Because he knows that time is much more important than Money in this situation. The success of his first deal, his reputation, and his future at this moment depend entirely on time but not on Money.
Time is absolutely important than Money, and almost everyone must have experienced the truth of the phrase at some point in their lives. Whether one agrees or not, it is a well-established and proven fact that time is more valuable than Money.

‘Time is Money’ Short Story
One evening, when the father came home from the office, tired and a little late, the kid had already eaten his dinner. The boy suddenly asked his father – Dad, how much you earn in a day? Father was not very pleased with the question and replied – that’s none of your business! Why do you want to know? But the kid insisted, saying he just wanted to know out of curiosity. After some reluctance, the father told him he earns thousand rupees daily. Next, the kid asked his father if he could lend him 100 Rupees. This made the father furious, who ordered the kid to go to his room and sleep. Poor child, having no clue what went wrong, retrieved the room and went to bed.
The father sat wondering what could have prompted the child to ask such a question regarding his earnings. However, as time passed, his anger subsided, and he went to the room with his son, probably thinking he had overreacted. When the father reached into the kid’s room, the latter was still awake. Apologizing for getting angry, the father took out a 100 Rupee note from his pocket and gave it to the kid.
Happy with joy, the child thanked his father, proceeded to his table drawer, took out the Money in the drawer, and started counting it. Once again, the father was surprised and a little angry. He asked where you got all the Money from. Why did you ask for more if you already had enough? The son’s reply had his father in tears. The kid said, father, I had collected Rs 900 over a long time, but today when you gave me Rs 100, my savings equal to your one day’s earning. So, may I request you take all thioney and spend a day with me tomorrow. The man was crushed. What Is The Meaning Of The Phrase “Time Is Money”?
Time is a precious aspect of life as it never waits for anyone, and no one can ever recover lost time. The time is money is a phrase Benjamin Franklin used in his essay, where he compared time to money. Here, to emphasise its importance, time is compared to a valuable thing, like money.
Reasons Why Time Is More Important Than Money
Time is more important than money is an appropriate phrase, as one cannot earn time, but proper use of time can help you earn money. Another reason is that no one can ever regain that lost time even by paying lots of money. But the lost money can be recovered by proper utilisation of time. A solid example of this scenario is a business person taking an expensive flight to attend a business deal. Here, this person is aware of the value of time and knows that the coming business deal may mint more money for him and compensate for this expensive flight ticket. One needs to understand time cannot be stored, but money can be.
How One Should Value Time?
A person trying to be successful is aware of the value of time and constantly tries to improve themselves by focusing on what matters the most in life. They never waste their time on useless things. One should respect and value their time to streamline their objectives and work hard to achieve them.

Short Speech on the Importance of Time in English for Students and Children
Respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends. A wonderful morning to all of you. Today I am going to share my views on the importance of time.
Time is very important in life. It is much more important than money. It is because money once lost, can be earned again but time does not come back. So time should be spent much more carefully than money as it is precious.
Time is so powerful that everything is bound by time. We calculate everything on the basis of time. Like when one is born, died, lived for how long, etc. Nothing is free from time.
Time waits for nobody. Whether a person is rich, poor, belong to any religion or region, time will continue to pass at its own speed. Many people do not realize the importance of time until its gone.
We should never waste time as it holds power to make someone a successful person or if wasted, can be the reason behind ones failure. For example, a student works hard and devote more time to his/her studies. He/she will do better in exams. But if a student wastes his/her time being lazy and devoting his time to relax more and ignore his studies, he is wasting his time.
It is seen that those who have invested their time in the right things and did not let a single second pass without proper utilization of it have become successful in life. Others who did not realize the importance of time, they were unable to achieve success.
But despite knowing how important the time is, we do not know how to organize this time properly. The best way is that we should plan and divide our time to do different activities in our daily routine. Like eating, sleeping, exercising, studying, playing, etc.
We should not spend more time doing what we like but we should spend it on activities that help us achieve our goals. For example, if a person wants to become a football player, he should spend more time playing and practising football with his team.
In short, time is that tool which if used properly can make the future better and has the power to bring happiness in life.
Thank you for listening to me.

Sample Speeches on the Importance of Time
A couple of sample speeches on the importance of time are given below. Go through them and utilise the resource to better understand the topic.
Effective time management is one of the finest qualities that has to be instilled in every child’s life from a young age itself. The skill of time management is very important in life; it helps an individual to prioritise actions and thus can systematically deal with incidents happening in life. A person with time management skills can easily sort out particular activities and can perform them well based on priority.
Childhood is considered the best time to learn life lessons. Effective time management is one of the best life lessons that they have to be taught.“By education, I mean an all-round drawing out of the best in the child and man; body, mind and spirit.” These are the words told by Mahatma Gandhi. Education is not only about scoring good marks and performing well in academics. The purest form of education is obtained from the exploration of our life. So to experience the exact sweetness of education, more and more have to be explored. A person needs time to do so. With the quality of effective time management, a person can schedule each and every day and live life to the fullest. It acts as a timesaver and offers time to perform more in life.
Time management is one of the finest traits valued by every employer. It is important in all stages of life. From childhood to old age, its advantages are well visible. In simpler terms, we can define time management as one of the few shortcuts to success in life.
What is human life? Human life is a short journey between birth and death. We only have limited time on this planet. So each and every second of our lives counts and is infinite in its worth. According to the words of Jim Rohn, “Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.” Don’t you agree with this statement?
Even though time limitation is well known to all, people still invest their lives in money rather than on time. Many people prioritise money over time. They are not willing to accept the fact that money can be made by any person who has got time left with them. Wasting time to make money is one of the most commonly made mistakes by human beings. It’s high time we stopped comparing the value of time with money because the value of time is inconceivably higher than that of money or anything else on this planet. Stop blindly pursuing to accumulate wealth and start living your life.
Do you know what determines the success of an individual? An individual’s success in life is determined by the productive utilisation of the 24 hours in a day. The efforts taken by the individuals differentiate them from one another. Like the words told by Lord Chesterfield, “Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. No idleness, no laziness, no procrastination; Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.”
Procrastination is never the choice of the wise. By procrastination, a person is actually trying to evade responsibilities. A person is only inviting trouble by doing so. We are all familiar with the proverb” A stitch in time saves nine”, right? So it is always better to finish tasks on time. Seize every opportunity and live every moment because time once lost is lost forever.
Why is time precious for every individual?
Human life is a short journey between birth and death. We only have a very limited time for living on this planet. So each and every second of our lives counts and is infinite in its worth. The value of time is inconceivably higher than that of money or anything else on this planet.

‘Good morning respected ma’am and classmates, today, I would like to present my views on time. Time is a complex concept to measure the duration of events and the sequence in which they happen. We use different units of time, such as seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, etc. All these units are used to track the passage of time.
However, time is not just about measuring the duration of events. Peter Henlein , a 16th-century German locksmith and clockmaker invented the watch. His efforts to craft a portable watch made it possible for us to measure time.
Time is measurable, but not controllable. Time is like a burning candle. The flame represents our life force, slowly burning down with each passing moment. But there is one difference, which can teach us how to manage time. In a candle, we can’t add more wax, but we can choose how brightly we want the flame to burn. This comparison focuses on the finite nature of life and the importance of living each moment to the fullest.
‘Every day, hour, minute and second of our life is important. Once a time is gone, it’s gone. Therefore, time management and using time wisely are very important. Time can be managed by setting goals, prioritizing tasks, and then systematically implementing them. Work, studies, family, and health are the things on which we must spend our time rather than randomly scrolling on social media and wasting our precious time.’
‘So, at last, I would like to conclude by saying that time is very precious. Let’s not wait for the perfect moment to start living. Let’s seize the present, use our time wisely, and create a life filled with moments we can treasure forever.
Thank you!’

Ans: ‘Good morning respected ma’am and classmates, today, I would like to present my views on time. Time is a complex concept to measure the duration of events and the sequence in which they happen. We use different units of time, such as seconds, minutes, hours, days, years, etc. All these units are used to track the passage of time.
Ans: Unlike money or material possessions, time is a finite resource that we can’t get back once it’s gone. It allows us to set goals, break them down into steps, and take action to achieve them. Whether it’s learning a new skill, building a career, or nurturing relationships, time is the space where progress unfolds. Time provides context for our memories and shapes who we become.
Ans: Start by making a detailed study plan according to your timetable. Divide your study plan into 40-50-minute sessions, and take short breaks. Avoid using cell phones and gadgets during exams. Regularly practice yoga for 30-40 minutes to relax your mind. Eat only healthy food, and try to take 7-8 hours of sleep.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland Delivers Remarks Announcing TD Bank’s Guilty Plea for Bank Secrecy Act and Money Laundering Conspiracy Violations in $1.8B Resolution
Washington , DC United States
Remarks as Delivered
Good afternoon everyone. Before we get started today, I want to extend my sympathy to the millions of Americans who’ve had their lives turned upside down by Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene.
I know I speak for all of us in expressing my gratitude to the first responders on the ground who are carrying out rescue missions. And I want to thank all of the volunteers who are helping their neighbors get through these storms.
And now to the subject of today’s announcement.
Today, TD Bank pled guilty to multiple felonies, including conspiring to violate the Bank Secrecy Act and commit money laundering. TD Bank has also agreed to a $1.8 billion criminal penalty. Combined with civil enforcement actions announced today by other agencies, the United States will be imposing a total [penalty] of approximately $3 billion against TD Bank.
TD Bank created an environment that allowed financial crime to flourish. By making its services convenient for criminals, it became one.
Today, TD Bank became the largest bank in U.S. history to plead guilty to Bank Secrecy Act program failures and the first U.S. bank in history to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering.
This is also the largest-ever penalty under the Bank Secrecy Act and the first time the Justice Department has assessed a daily fine against a bank.
As part of the plea agreement, TD Bank will fundamentally restructure its corporate compliance program at its U.S.-based bank, which is the 10th largest in the United States.
The bank has also agreed to the imposition of a three-year monitorship and a five-year term of probation. While the bank has started its remediation, it will continue to remediate and improve its anti-money laundering compliance program to ensure that the bank operates lawfully and safely moving forward.
In addition to obtaining today’s corporate felony pleas, the Justice Department has also prosecuted two dozen individuals for their involvement in money laundering schemes that moved over $670 million in illicit funds through TD Bank accounts. So far, the Justice Department has charged two TD Bank employees for their involvement in one of these schemes.
Pursuant to the plea agreement, TD Bank is required to fully cooperate with the Justice Department’s investigation of the bank and any of its officers, directors, and employees. If the bank fails to do so, it will again be subject to criminal prosecution, in which the statement of facts that are part of the plea agreement may be used as evidence against it.
Our criminal investigations into individual employees at every level of TD Bank are active and ongoing.
As is the case in all corporate criminal matters, no one involved in TD Bank’s illegal conduct will be off limits. We will follow the evidence wherever it leads.
Federal anti-money laundering laws are designed to prevent criminals from using U.S. banks to fuel their crimes.
Our laws dictate that the narcotics traffickers who flood our communities with deadly drugs cannot use American financial institutions to move their money.
And our anti-money laundering laws dictate that a bank that willfully fails to protect against criminal schemes is also a criminal.
That is what TD Bank was, because it failed to maintain an adequate anti-money laundering program between January 2014 and October 2023.
Over a six-year period, TD Bank failed to monitor $18.3 trillion in customer activity.
As TD Bank admitted in its plea agreement, this allowed three money laundering networks to transfer over $670 million through TD Bank accounts. At least one of those schemes involved five TD Bank employees.
The bank maintained an automated transaction monitoring system that was supposed to detect and generate alerts on suspicious transactions and activities. But that system was willfully deficient.
As the bank admitted in the statement of facts, which it filed today, at various times high-level executives, including the person who became the bank’s chief anti-money laundering officer, knew there were serious problems with the bank’s anti-money laundering program. But the bank failed to correct them.
Three money laundering networks took advantage of TD Bank’s failed anti-money laundering system.
First, over the course of a three-year period, a person who TD Bank employees knew as David moved over $470 million in illicit funds through TD Bank branches in the United States.
David has separately pled guilty to laundering drug proceeds through the bank.
David had attempted to launder money through numerous financial institutions. But he found that TD Bank had the most permissive policies and procedures and chose to launder most of his funds there.
He also bribed TD Bank employees with more than $57,000 in gift cards in furtherance of his scheme.
David’s illegal conduct was obvious, to say the least. On more than one occasion, he deposited more than $1 million in cash in a single day. He then immediately moved the funds out of the bank using official bank checks and wire transfers.
TD Bank employees at many levels understood and acknowledged the likely illegality of David’s activity.
In August 2020, one TD Bank store manager emailed another store manager and remarked, “You guys really need to shut this down LOL.”
In late 2020, another store manager implored his supervisors — several TD Bank regional managers — to act, noting that “[i]t is getting out of hand and my tellers are at the point that they don’t feel comfortable handling these transactions.”
In February 2021, one TD Bank store employee saw that David’s network had purchased more than $1 million in official bank checks with cash in a single day. The employee asked: “How is that not money laundering.” A back-office employee responded, “oh it 100% is.”
In a second, separate money laundering scheme, five TD Bank employees conspired with criminal organizations to open and maintain accounts at the bank that were used to launder $39 million to Colombia, including drug proceeds.
That money laundering organization reused the same Venezuelan passports to open multiple accounts at TD Bank. It sometimes used the same passport to obtain multiple debit cards for a single account.
Despite significant internal red flags, the bank did not identify that its own employees were conspiring to launder tens of millions of dollars to Colombia, until law enforcement arrested one of them.
In yet a third scheme, outlined in today’s charges, a money laundering network maintained accounts at TD Bank for at least five shell companies. It used those accounts to move over $100 million in illicit funds through the bank.
Even though retail employees flagged suspicious activity connected to those accounts, the bank did not file a suspicious activity report until law enforcement alerted the bank to the money laundering network’s activity. By that time, the accounts had been open for over 13 months and had been used to transfer nearly $120 million.
On multiple occasions, bank employees openly joked about the bank’s enabling of criminal activity.
In one instance a compliance employee asked a manager what “the bad guys” thought about the bank. The manager replied: “Lol. Easy target.”
Other employees consistently joked on the bank’s instant messaging platform about the bank’s motto, “America’s Most Convenient Bank.” They linked it to the bank’s approach to combating money laundering.
For example, a compliance employee asked a colleague why “all the really awful ones bank here lol.”
The colleague replied: “because … we are convenient.”
There is nothing wrong with a bank that tries to make its services convenient for its honest customers.
But there is something terribly wrong with a bank that knowingly makes its services convenient for criminals.
The Bank Secrecy Act requires financial institutions like TD Bank to establish and maintain compliance programs that guard against money laundering.
But TD Bank chose profits over compliance, in order to keep its costs down.
That decision is now costing the bank billions of dollars in criminal and civil penalties.
Less than a year ago, the Justice Department secured felony guilty pleas from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, and from its founder and CEO. We also obtained one of the largest corporate penalties in U.S. history.
The Department’s actions against both Binance and TD Bank are a reminder that financial institutions in this country have an obligation to guard against criminals exploiting their services.
The Justice Department will aggressively prosecute any company that fails to do so.
I want to express my gratitude to the public servants of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, and the DEA for their extraordinary work on this case. We are also grateful to IRS Criminal Investigation, the FDIC’s Office of Inspector General, FinCEN, and our other federal, state, and local partners for their work.
I am proud of them.
I will now turn the podium over to Deputy Attorney General Monaco.

Harris and Trump Offer a Clear Contrast on the Economy
Both candidates embrace expansions of government power to steer economic outcomes — but in vastly different areas.
- Share full article
By Jim Tankersley
Jim Tankersley has covered economic policy in presidential elections since 2004.
Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump flew to North Carolina this week to deliver what were billed as major speeches on the economy. Neither laid out a comprehensive policy plan — not Ms. Harris in her half-hour focus on housing, groceries and prescription drugs, nor Mr. Trump in 80 minutes of sprinkling various proposals among musings about dangerous immigrants.
But in their own ways, both candidates sent voters clear and important messages about their economic visions. Each embraced a vision of a powerful federal government, using its muscle to intervene in markets in pursuit of a stronger and more prosperous economy.
They just disagreed, almost entirely, on when and how that power should be used.
In Raleigh on Friday, Ms. Harris began to put her own stamp on the brand of progressive economics that has come to dominate Democratic politics over the last decade. That economic thinking embraces the idea that the federal government must act aggressively to foster competition and correct distortions in private markets.
The approach seeks large tax increases on corporations and high earners, to fund assistance for low-income and middle-class workers who are struggling to build wealth for themselves and their children. At the same time, it provides big tax breaks to companies engaged in what Ms. Harris and other progressives see as delivering great economic benefit — like manufacturing technologies needed to fight global warming , or building affordable housing.
That philosophy animated the policy agenda that Ms. Harris unveiled on Friday. She pledged to send up to $25,000 in down-payment assistance to every first-time home buyer over four years, while directing $40 billion to construction companies that build starter homes. She said she would permanently reinstate an expanded child tax credit that President Biden temporarily established with his 2021 stimulus law, while offering even more assistance to parents of newborns.
She called for a federal ban on corporate price gouging on groceries and for new federal enforcement tools to punish companies that unfairly push up food prices. “My plan will include new penalties for opportunistic companies that exploit crises and break the rules,” she said, adding: “We will help the food industry become more competitive, because I believe competition is the lifeblood of our economy.”
Questions remain over the rest of Ms. Harris’s agenda, including which tax increases she would favor to offset those tax cuts and spending programs. The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which is focused on deficit reduction, estimated on Friday that the plans she unveiled would raise the federal deficit by $1.7 trillion over the next decade, if not paid for.
But the main thrust of Ms. Harris’s vision is clear: a mixture of government intervention and government assistance, all meant to help Americans climb their way into the middle class.
As Gene Sperling, a former economic aide to three Democratic presidents who is a senior economic adviser to Ms. Harris, put it: “Her focus on an opportunity economy and her stress on homeownership show she is focused like a laser on both lowering costs to help families make ends meet and being able to get ahead by owning a home or starting a small business.”
Mr. Trump’s pitch is simpler: He says that he made America rich the first time he was in the White House, and that he would do it again. He also blames Ms. Harris and Mr. Biden for a surge in inflation under their administration.
“I gave Harris and Biden an economic miracle, and they quickly turned it into an economic nightmare,” he said in Asheville on Wednesday, omitting the job and income losses of the 2020 pandemic recession on his watch.
Like Ms. Harris, though, Mr. Trump offered a string of pledges on how he would wield government power to intervene in markets and help consumers. He said he would direct his cabinet to somehow bring down the cost of car insurance in the first 100 days of his presidency, or possibly even the first week. He said he would cut energy prices in half.
He said he would deport millions of immigrants to bring housing prices down.
Mr. Trump also ratcheted up a promise to impose new taxes on imported goods — from every country the United States trades with — in a bid to force more companies to make products in America. Previously, Mr. Trump said he would tax imports at a 10 percent rate; in Asheville, he said the rate could be as high as 20 percent. Those tariffs are paid by U.S. importers, not foreign countries . Economic research suggests they would, to some degree, raise prices and serve as a tax on consumers.
This, too, is a clear vision of federal power reshaping the economy. It is a foundation of Mr. Trump’s economic agenda and, in many cases, a break from the conservative economic orthodoxy that long dominated the Republican Party.
But Mr. Trump has not abandoned all of that tradition. He pledged to continue cutting taxes, including extending cuts for individuals that he signed in a 2017 tax overhaul and eliminating federal income taxes on Social Security benefits and tip income. He also promised to roll back federal regulations of business, including environmental regulations and restrictions on oil drilling on some public lands.
An analysis based on reports from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget suggests that Mr. Trump’s tax cuts could add $7 trillion to the deficit over a decade, only some of which would be offset by tariffs or a repeal of tax breaks signed by Mr. Biden. Economists warn that higher deficits could stoke more inflation. Trump aides say his agenda will lower prices.
“If you were to cut taxes, deregulate the economy, produce more energy — all of those policies are deflationary, not inflationary,” Stephen Moore, a co-founder of the conservative Committee to Unleash Prosperity and a policy adviser to Mr. Trump, told reporters on Friday.
In North Carolina, Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris each sought to cast the other’s philosophy of federal power as a threat to the economy and working families.
Mr. Trump warned that Ms. Harris would cause a 1929-style stock crash if elected. Ms. Harris said Mr. Trump’s tariffs would amount to “a Trump tax on gas, a Trump tax on food, a Trump tax on clothing, a Trump tax on over-the-counter medication.”
There was little overlap in the speeches. Ms. Harris pledged a small amount of deregulation, saying she would cut “red tape” to speed housing construction. Both candidates spoke highly of Medicare.
Ms. Harris had said in recent days that, like Mr. Trump, she supports exempting some tipped income from federal taxes. In Raleigh, she did not mention that particular source of agreement.
Michael Gold contributed reporting.

Time is something that is very precious and important to all of us. Thus it is important to utilize it wisely as it is very important in our lives and plays a significant role. Also, our whole life revolves around it. Read Speech on Time here.
Moreover, we should respect the time and understand the value of time because the time gone is never coming back. So, it is better to respect and follow time instead of regretting afterward.
We all are very familiar with the proverb “Time and tide wait for none” and this proverb is best suited because tide doesn’t wait for anyone. In the same manner, time also doesn’t wait for anyone. So, we should make time our opportunity and grab it as it is very precious and important in our life.

Why time is important?
To understand the importance of time let’s look at some points:
Punctuality
For living a better life one should be punctual in their daily life. Those who understand the importance of time are always punctual and successful in life. Moreover, those who are not punctual may have to face many problems and consequences in life.
Time is Invaluable
It is more valuable than money as we can earn money in any sphere of our life but we cannot earn the time back, which has already gone. Furthermore, the flow of time cannot be stopped and therefore we should use it wisely.
Importance of time management
An important factor for success in life is time management. It will always remain an important factor for a person to be successful in life. Suppose, if a student does not study regularly then he may face problems during the examination due to which his result will be affected.
Being on time should be our propriety. Moreover, if we don’t respect time than it doesn’t mean that the other person is also not respecting time. For our appointments, we should be on time and should not waste the time of others.
Unpredictable future
No one can predict her/his future. Hence, we should work hard to and perform all our tasks on time in order to make our future bright. Also, in order to avoid chaos, we should finish our tasks on time.
The best medicine
Publius Ovidius Naso or Ovid says that “Time is the best medicine” and it is really true that it is the best medicine as it helps to heal all our wounds, feelings, and broken hearts. Also, it helps us to forgive a person for his mistakes and hence said to be the best medicine.
The proverb “killing time is not a murder, it’s a suicide” perfectly suits all those who do not understand the value of time and also don’t respect it. They waste their time doing useless things or doing nothing at all.
Furthermore, there are people who give excuses like they do not have time for doing work. It’s not that they do not have time but they don’t know how to manage time.
Every person in this world daily has 24 hours. However, it depends upon the person how to manage their golden hours and how to set priorities.
Moreover, if we learn to manage our rime then there is no one in this world that can stop us from being successful in life.
To conclude, we all can easily understand what time is and how important it is in our life. Hence, we should manage our time in a proper way and achieve our goals. As time helps us to become a successful person.

Harris to make 'closing argument' speech at the site of Trump's Jan. 6 remarks
Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a “closing argument” speech in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday at the site where former President Donald Trump spoke shortly before the Jan. 6 riot , according to a senior campaign official.
Harris will argue it's time to turn the page on Trump and choose a new way forward, the official said. The address will contrast what a Harris term in office would like compared with another Trump presidency.
The event at the Ellipse, outside the White House, is timed for exactly one week before Election Day.
Sources had told NBC News earlier in the day that Harris' campaign had been planning an address on the National Mall and had sought a permit for the site.
NBC News obtained the permit application from the National Park Service, which showed the Harris campaign amended the request this week to specifically ask for space on the Ellipse.
That's where Trump spoke to his supporters on Jan. 6, 2021, as he challenged the election results, which he falsely claimed had been "rigged" against him. During his address, he told them he would march to the Capitol with them to put pressure on Congress and his own vice president not to certify the results.
“We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated,” Trump told the crowd , urging it repeatedly to "fight."
"[Y]ou'll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong,” he said then.
He has since referred to the date as a "day of love" because of the large crowd he drew to the Ellipse, despite the ensuing violence at the Capitol, in which over 140 police officers were injured.
The Harris campaign official said the campaign plans to contrast Trump's worst moment in office with what the official called Harris' optimistic vision for the future.
The rally permit estimates the event will draw 7,750 people. It does not specify who is speaking.
The Ellipse is between the South Lawn of the White House and the National Mall.
Both Harris and Trump have been crisscrossing battleground states in the weeks leading up to Election Day, but this would be one of her largest events in the capital.

Kamala Harris unveils populist policy agenda, with $6,000 credit for newborns
The vice president endorses government action on housing, groceries, medical debt, drugs and other issues.
RALEIGH, N.C. — Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday unveiled an aggressively populist economic agenda to an enthusiastic but intimate crowd, providing the most detailed vision yet of her governing priorities since becoming the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.
In a pivot from the raucous rallies that have so far defined Harris’s month-old campaign, the vice president instead opted for a smaller setting of about 250 supporters that allowed her to explain a number of economic policies aimed at “lowering costs for American families.” The event seemed to signal a new phase in Harris’s campaign, one where she will not only hold rallies with thousands of people but also engage more directly with smaller audiences, where she can expound on legislative and executive efforts she would pursue as president.
“Together we will build what I call an opportunity economy,” Harris said. “Everyone, regardless of who they are or where they start, has an opportunity to build wealth for themselves and their children.”
Some of the economic policies, which Harris’s campaign had announced earlier on Friday, went beyond what President Joe Biden had promised. While Harris is building on much of Biden’s economic agenda, she is also seeking to roll out policies that are unique to her as she works to define herself to millions of voters who may not have a firm grasp of where she stands on a number of key issues. Some Republicans have criticized Harris’s campaign for lacking substance, which she plans to address head on in the coming days and weeks, her advisers said.
“Building up the middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency because I strongly believe when the middle class is strong, America is strong,” Harris said. “So in the weeks to come, I will address in greater detail my plans to build an opportunity economy.”
The most striking proposals were for the elimination of medical debt for millions of Americans; the “first-ever” ban on price gouging for groceries and food; a cap on prescription drug costs; a $25,000 subsidy for first-time home buyers; and a child tax credit that would provide $6,000 per child to families for the first year of a baby’s life.
The last item followed a suggestion earlier this month from Sen. JD Vance (Ohio), the GOP vice-presidential nominee, that the credit be raised from $2,000 per child to $5,000. Harris is also calling for restoring the Biden administration’s child tax credit that expired at the end of 2021, which raised the benefit for most families from $2,000 per child to $3,000.
The flurry of policy positions — released just before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago begins on Monday — represented the clearest articulation yet of how Harris, who has only had a relatively brief time on the national stage, would handle economic policy if elected this fall. Harris has thus far surrounded herself with many former aides to Biden, and her team had made some overtures to business leaders that they hoped reflected a more centrist approach. But the policy positions she embraced Friday suggest she will continue, if not deepen, the party’s transformation under Biden, who pushed for more aggressive government intervention in the economy on industrial, labor and antitrust policies.
Election 2024
Before Friday, Harris’s campaign stump speeches had largely focused on broader themes about building a better future, arguing that Donald Trump and Republicans were seeking to take the country backward. Harris also spoke about “freedoms,” including reproductive rights, same-sex marriage and voting rights, but offered few details about what policies would fall under that umbrella.
Friday’s remarks struck a starkly different tone. Harris immediately delved into her newly unveiled economic policies and spoke in personal detail about growing up in a “middle-class household.” She spoke of her mother saving up for “well over a decade” to buy a home and working at McDonald’s while she was in college to earn spending money.
Harris’s policy positions have evolved and changed considerably from when she first sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019. At the time — when she was trying to distinguish herself among a crowded field of contenders who often tacked to the left to win primary voters — she embraced a number of progressive policies that she has since rejected, including a single-payer health-care system and banning fracking and offshore drilling. The challenge for Harris now is to maintain the energy and enthusiasm that have powered her run so far and dramatically upended the presidential contest against Trump, while simultaneously rolling out concrete policies to demonstrate her seriousness as a candidate that will be subject to scrutiny and criticism.
During a press call hosted by the RNC and the Trump campaign, Kevin Hassett, former chairman to the Council of Economic Advisers in the Trump administration, called Harris’s plan for price gouging “completely preposterous.”
“The proposal is very unfortunate,” he said. “It could cause an enormous amount of damage to the economy, and it reveals the desire for the government to take over the economy that I think really does suggest that Harris agrees that the era of believing that if it’s good for free enterprise, it’s good for America, that that era is over.”
In the weeks leading up to this announcement, at least two outside advisers privately suggested to the Harris campaign that she signal a move to the center by backing income tax cuts for middle-class households or a tax break for small businesses, according to the people aware of the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private conversations. Those suggestions were not included in the final package, although they may be released at a later date. The plan also alludes to cutting “red tape” and lowering the deficit but provided no specifics.
It’s not entirely clear how much Harris’s sweeping new proposals would cost. But estimates released Friday by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget (CRFB) show that, all told, the plan would increase deficits by $1.7 trillion over a decade. That cost would grow to $2 trillion if Harris’s housing policies — which the campaign says are slated to last only four years — were made permanent.
Roughly $1.2 trillion of that bill would come from an expansion of the child tax credit, according to the CRFB. Another $400 billion stems from enhanced health insurance subsidies, and $150 billion comes from the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit. Another $200 billion comes from support for affordable housing and credits to help first-time home buyers.
The campaign says its plan would be paid for through taxes on corporations and some of America’s highest earners, along with other revenue raisers in Biden’s budget. But there were few other specifics as of Friday, leaving open questions on the final price tag and the risks of more inflation. More housing supply, for example, would in theory help cool prices by loosening up the market. But credits for first-time home buyers could work in the opposite direction by increasing demand.
Harris’s policy push was not without its detractors, even within her own party. Policy experts in the Democratic Party lamented her recent endorsement of Trump’s plan to eliminate taxes on tips , as well as her promises not to raise taxes on Americans earning under $400,000 per year — positions they see as incompatible with Democrats’ ambitions to approve major new expansions of the nation’s safety net. Business leaders who had hoped for a warmer relationship under Harris also balked at being blamed for higher prices in her push against corporate price gouging.
And yet despite these drawbacks, Democrats have become increasingly convinced that embracing populist economics is key to beating Trump — the top priority for the party through November. Concerns about the economy and inflation have ranked as among voters’ top issues in the 2024 presidential election, and polling has consistently showed that attacking corporate price gouging is popular.
“Vice President Harris faces a dilemma: On the one hand, America is on a fiscally unsustainable path, and if we’re going to embark on some of the more ambitious programs she’d like to pursue we need more revenue,” said Daniel Hemel, a tax policy expert at the New York University School of Law. “On the other hand, democracy is in peril, and that crisis feels — and is — more imminent than the fiscal crisis, and I think she’s made the correct calculus that sacrificing on fiscal policy for a few hundred thousand middle-class voters in the battleground states is worth it.”
Perhaps Harris’s most surprising policy announcement was her plan to ban “price gouging ” in grocery and food prices. While details were sparse, the measure would include authorizing the Federal Trade Commission to impose large fines on grocery stores that impose “excessive” price hikes on customers, her campaign said. Grocery prices remain a top concern for voters: Even though the rate of increase leveled off this year, grocery prices have jumped 26 percent since 2019, according to Elizabeth Pancotti, director of special initiatives at the Roosevelt Institute.
Still, even some Democratic economists balked at that idea and expressed hope that it reflected little more than political messaging. Economists typically say mandatory price-setting creates shortages, by reducing incentives for firms to produce supply, and is the kind of measure far less likely to have been backed under the Clinton or Obama administrations. Biden aides have argued some markets have become distorted by consolidation and require government intervention to be rebalanced on behalf of consumers.
On housing, Harris did less to break with the Biden administration but still opted for a more active set of federal proposals than those thus far endorsed by the White House. Harris endorsed a slew of measures to expand housing supply — including an expansion of tax credits to incentivize housing construction — but also a new $25,000 in federal down-payment assistance to more than 1 million first-time home buyers. (Biden had previously proposed a more limited measure only for first-generation home buyers.) Critics say this plan would probably bid up housing prices, which have already soared since the pandemic.
Harris also pledged to work with states to cancel medical debt for millions of Americans, building on one of her signature policy issues as vice president . That effort could involve using federal funds to buy and forgive outstanding medical debt from health providers. Harris’s office also recently worked with the state of North Carolina on a first-of-its-kind initiative to forgive the medical debt of 2 million state residents by creating financial incentives for hospitals to relieve medical debt or prevent it from accumulating in the first place. That initiative received federal approval last month, and all 99 eligible hospitals in North Carolina have since committed to participate — a potential model for other states.
Harris’s health-care proposals also lean into liberal efforts to take on the pharmaceutical industry, building on ideas popularized by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and adopted by Biden. The vice president is pledging to expand several provisions contained in the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, including capping the out-of-pocket cost of insulin at $35 per month, and capping Americans’ annual out-of-pocket spending on prescription drugs at $2,000. Those two provisions are currently in effect for Medicare beneficiaries. Extending them to all Americans could face resistance from the pharmaceutical industry and Republicans.
During her speech, Harris warned that Trump’s economic proposals would translate into higher costs borne by middle- and working-class families. She characterized Trump’s plans to impose a tariff of 10 percent on all U.S. imports as a “national sales tax,” arguing it would raise prices on everything from food to gas to clothing. Economists say the proposed import duty would raise costs for consumers and domestic producers. The Biden administration, however, has kept most of the tariffs Trump imposed during the first term, although the GOP’s nominees plans for a second term would go much further.
“At this moment when everyday prices are too high, he will make them even higher,” Harris said. The crowd broke out into chants of “We’re not going back.”
Later in her speech, Harris blasted Trump’s plan to further cut taxes on the richest Americans. “You know, I think that if you want to know who someone cares about, look who they fight for,” Harris said.

Thank you, my fellow Democrats. Thank you, my fellow Americans. Thank you so much. Thank you all…
Wow. There’s a lot of energy in this room, just like there is across the country. Something is happening in America, you can feel it. Something we’ve worked for and dreamed of for a long time. First though, let’s salute President Biden.
He has been democracy’s champion at home and abroad. He brought dignity, decency, and confidence back to the White House, and he showed what it means to be a true patriot. Thank you, Joe Biden, for your lifetime of service and leadership.
And now we are writing a new chapter in America’s story.
You know, my mother Dorothy was born right here in Chicago before women had the right to vote. That changed 104 years ago yesterday. Think about it: Tennessee became the final state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. The state legislature was deadlocked until one lawmaker’s mother, a widow who read three newspapers a day, sent a letter—a letter to her son. “No more delays,” she wrote. “Give us the vote.” And since that day, every generation has carried the torch forward.
In 1972, a fearless black congresswoman named Shirley Chisholm, she ran for President. And her determination let me and millions of others dream bigger. Not just because of who she was, but because of who she fought for: working parents, poor children, the last, the least, and the lost.
In 1984, I brought my daughter to see Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman nominated for vice president. If we can do this, Gerry said, we can do anything.
And then there was 2016, when it was the honor of my life to accept our party’s nomination for President. And nearly 66 million Americans voted for a future where there are no ceilings on our dreams.
And afterwards, we refused to give up on America. Millions marched. Many ran for office. We kept our eyes on the future.
Well, my friends, the future is here.
I wish my mother and Kamala’s mother could see us. They would say, “Keep going,” surely. And Gerry would say, “Keep going.” Women fighting for reproductive healthcare are saying, “Keep going.” Families building better lives, parents stretching to afford childcare, young people struggling to pay their rent—they’re all asking us to keep going.
So with faith in each other and joy in our hearts, let’s send Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House.
You know, the story of my life and the history of our country is that progress is possible, but not guaranteed. We have to fight for it and never, ever give up. There is always a choice. Do we push forward or pull back, come together as we the people or split into us versus them? That’s the choice we face in this election.
Kamala has the character, experience, and vision to lead us forward. I know her heart and her integrity.
We both got our start as young lawyers helping children who were abused and neglected. That kind of work changes a person. Those kids stay with you. Kamala carries with her the hopes of every child she protected, every family she helped, every community she served. So as President, she will always have our backs, and she will be a fighter for us. She will fight to lower costs for hardworking families, open the doors wide for good paying jobs. And yes, she will restore abortion rights nationwide.
As a prosecutor, Kamala locked up murderers and drug traffickers. She will never rest in defense of our freedom and safety. Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial. And when he woke up, he made his own kind of history—the first person to run for President with 34 felony convictions.
But we also know as Vice President, Kamala sat in the situation room and stood for America’s values. I know what it takes, and I can tell you as commander-in-chief, Kamala won’t disrespect our military and our veterans. She reveres our Medal of Honor recipients. She won’t be sending love letters to dictators. She will defend democracy and our Constitution and will protect America from enemies foreign and domestic.
Think about it. The Constitution says, the President’s job is to “take care that the laws be faithfully executed.” Those are the words of our founders: “take care.” Just look at the candidates. Kamala cares—cares about kids and families, cares about America. Donald only cares about himself. On her first day in court, Kamala said five words that still guide her: “Kamala Harris, for the people.” That is something that Donald Trump will never understand. So it is no surprise, is it, that he is lying about Kamala’s record, he’s mocking her name and her laugh. Sounds familiar?
But we have him on the run now. So no matter what the polls say, we can’t let up. We can’t get driven down crazy conspiracy rabbit holes. We have to fight for the truth. We have to fight for Kamala as she will fight for us. Because you know what? It still takes a village to raise a family, heal a country, and win a campaign. And America needs every one of us, our energy, our talents, our dreams. We’re not just electing a President. We are uplifting our nation. We’re opening the promise of America wide enough for everyone.
Together, we’ve put a lot of cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling. And tonight, tonight’s so close to breaking through once and for all.
I want to tell you what I see through all those cracks and why it matters for each and every one of us. What do I see? I see freedom. I see the freedom to make our own decisions about our health, our lives, our loves, our families. The freedom to work with dignity and prosper, to worship as we choose or not. To speak our minds freely and honestly. I see freedom from fear and intimidation, from violence and injustice, from chaos and corruption. I see the freedom to look our children in the eye and say, “In America, you can go as far as your hard work and talent will take you,” and mean it.
And you know what? On the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office as our 47th President of the United States. Because my friends, when a barrier falls for one of us, it falls, it falls and clears the way for all of us.
So for the next 78 days, we need to work harder than we ever have. We need to beat back the dangers that Trump and his allies pose to the rule of law and our way of life. Don’t get distracted or complacent. Talk to your friends and neighbors. Volunteer. Be proud champions for the truth and for the country that we all love.

I want my grandchildren and their grandchildren to know I was here at this moment, that we were here and that we were with Kamala Harris every step of the way. This is our time, America. This is when we stand up. This is when we break through. The future is here. It’s in our grasp. Let’s go win it.
