Advantages and Disadvantages of Robots: Band nine IELTS Essay

Robots are a big topic these days. From self-driving cars to operations, more and more tasks seem to be being taken over by robots. This band nine sample essay looks at this topic. Keep scrolling for information about why this essay is band nine including structure, grammar and a vocabulary list.

Some people think that robots are very important to future human development. Others think that they are dangerous and have negative effects on society. Discuss both sides and give your point of view.

Increasing automation has become a controversial topic in recent years. In this essay, I will compare the advantage that robots can perform tasks that are dangerous or difficult with the disadvantage that robots could take over jobs. I will conclude that, despite the drawbacks, this type of development is positive. 

One of the main advantages of robots is that they are able to perform tasks that would be dangerous or difficult for a person. For example, robots are already used for bomb disposal , which keeps people out of harm’s way .  Similarly, robots are capable of performing delicate and precise tasks in manufacturing and medical tasks settings with a high degree of accuracy. If we allow people to continue to do these jobs, it will lead to lives being lost and inferior products being made. 

However, one of the main issues with this is that robots taking over other jobs that are currently done by humans. In the past, we have seen auto manufacturing turn from a source of jobs to something that is mostly automated. If we see this happen in other industries, it could lead to widespread unemployment and economic insecurity . Although this would be good for factory owners, this type of unemployment has wider negative societal impacts . 

In conclusion, while robots have the potential to greatly improve our lives by performing risky and difficult tasks, they also have the potential to take people’s jobs. Ultimately, I believe that this type of technological progress can lead to the creation of new jobs. 

This is an example of a ‘both sides and an opinion’ type essay. For this type of essay, you need to present both sides of the argument before giving your point of view. I prefer to dedicate one body paragraph to each side before writing my opinion briefly in the conclusion. You can see that structure here. Some scientists believe that in the future computers will be more intelligent than human beings. While some see this as a positive development others worry about the negative consequences.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Many today are  worried about  the  potential drawbacks  of  artificial intelligence . In my opinion, these  concerns  are  legitimate  but  on the whole  A.I. will allow for  new heights  to  human endeavour .

The  chief associated worries concern  its  misuse  by humans  initially  and machines later. The former is already  coming to pass  as  automation  has  phased out  many  traditional jobs . As artificial intelligence becomes more  sophisticated , the  positions in jeopardy  will  transition  from  low-skilled factory staff  to  data analysts  and other  white-collar workers . The fear is that companies will be  motivated solely  by their  bottom line ,  lay off  many employees and  trigger mass social unrest . Some also believe A.I.  portends darker scenarios akin   to  the  apocalyptic dystopias  of films like The Matrix and Terminator. This is a  possibility  though it is impossible to  estimate  its  likelihood .

The  speculations  above should be  taken seriously  but they  pale in comparison to  the technologies A.I. can  complement . Companies  ranging from  Google to Amazon to Tesla are  investing heavily  in this industry because of its  enormous potential . For example,  self-driving cars  are  fast becoming a reality  and will reduce the number of  vehicular accidents massively .  Policymakers  in government will be able to  take advantage of   sophisticated algorithms  to  project economic policy  and  positively enhance  the lives of billions. In the  consumer sphere , smartphones will become  increasingly helpful ,  freeing up  individuals to  focus their time  on work, family, and  leisure . This is only a  partial list  and the  most intriguing  and  impactful applications  have yet to be  unearthed .

In conclusion, artificial intelligence  poses risks  to the  labour market  and the future of humanity, but the opportunities for new projects should  take priority . It is important to find a  balance  and  methods  of  mitigating  the  dangers .

Hello , in this essay you have used the phrases like phase out and lay off. So can we use them in formal writing in academic writing part 2?

Try to avoid phrasal verbs as much as possible – the occasional one like ‘phase out’ and lay off is ok – but to be safe, avoid using them if you know a more formal, academic word.

Writing Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people feel that with the rise of artificial intelligence, computers and robots will take over the roles of teachers. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 9 Essay

With ever increasing technological advances, computers and robots are replacing human roles in different areas of society. This trend can also be seen in education, where interactive programs can enhance the educational experience for children and young adults. Whether, however, this revolution can also take over the role of the teacher completely is debatable, and I oppose this idea as it is unlikely to serve students well.

The roles of computers and robots can be seen in many areas of the workplace. Classic examples are car factories, where a lot of the repetitive precision jobs done on assembly lines have been performed by robots for many years, and medicine, where diagnosis, and treatment, including operations, have also been assisted by computers for a long time. According to the media, it won’t also be long until we have cars that are driven automatically.

It has long been discussed whether robots and computers can do this in education. It is well known that the complexity of programs can now adapt to so many situations that something can already be set up that has the required knowledge of the teacher, along with the ability to predict and answer all questions that might be asked by students. In fact, due to the nature of computers, the knowledge levels can far exceed a teacher’s and have more breadth, as a computer can have equal knowledge in all the subjects that are taught in school, as opposed to a single teacher’s specialisation. It seems very likely, therefore, that computers and robots should be able to deliver the lessons that teachers can, including various ways of differentiating and presenting materials to suit varying abilities and ages of students.

Where I am not convinced is in the pastoral role of teachers. Part of teaching is managing behaviour and showing empathy with students, so that they feel cared for and important. Even if a robot or computer can be programmed to imitate these actions, students will likely respond in a different way when they know an interaction is part of an algorithm rather than based on human emotion.

Therefore, although I feel that computers should be able to perform a lot of the roles of teachers in the future, they should be used as educational tools to assist teachers and not to replace them. In this way, students would receive the benefits of both ways of instruction.

Today different types of robots are being developed which can serve as companions and workers to help at work and home.

Is this a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

As we sail through the staggeringly technological epoch, different types of robots are being engineered that can perform as associates and workers to help enormously both at home and workplace. This essay would argue that this is a positive development because these robots provide useful assistance in a house environment and ensure quality and safety to the workplace as well.

Robot companions prove highly advantageous. A companion robot is capable of rendering handy assistance in a socially accepted way. That is to say that a robot friend’s primary objective is to assist humans in a household environment. Take Pepper, the latest robot designed by Aldebaran Robotics, for example of a humanoid robot companion. Pepper is an interactive social robot helping in making choices, communicate with people, and even detect people’s facial expressions. What is more, robot companions are able to help people with particular needs such as autistic children or older people. Thus, it reaps considerable benefits to humans.

Besides, robots bring substantial advantages to the workplace. Safety is the most decisive advantage of utilizing robotics technology. Heavy hardware, machines and tools that run at hot temperatures and sharp objects are likely to harm a human being. By designating hazardous tasks to robots, employers are more likely to take a look at a repair bill than a genuine medical bill or a claim. Workers who work on dangerous jobs will be grateful that robots can eradicate a portion of the hazards. Another obvious benefit is that robots always deliver quality. Since robots are customized for precise, repetitive movement, they are more averse to make errors. Somewhat or another, robots are simultaneously an employee and a quality control framework. Therefore, robots reap various benefits to employees as well as employers.

To conclude, it is clear that robots are beneficial as not only do they provide companionship or assist in house chores but also maintain quality or maximize safety in the workplace. It is thus a positive development.

On the one hand, the number of modern technologies are increasing such as robots, machines and factories are using as workers instead of people. The main argument seems to be that many robots are working as home cleaners making lazy people lazier. Nowadays factories are prefer robots in any hand-making business because they do not tire and works faster this is can lead to the problems with unemployment. In result, for people without qualification it is hard to find any jobs with good salaries. If, in contrast, without that much robots in industries problem with unemployment could be solved. Increasing numbers of robots courses to people lose their jobs.

On the other hand, devices such as robot vacuum cleaner, smart houses are helping us in our modern life. These technologies are doing daily home jobs like cleaning a house, preparing the coffee, which saves us more time to focus on other jobs or on our health, especially when you work from home. In explanation, robots can do daily jobs for you while you are working or busy with other jobs. Consequently, after job instead of cleaning the house for the rest of the day, people are spending free time for themselves. Take information given by scientists as an illustration, every twenty people from hundred cannot drive a car properly but new cars with autopilots helps them with it.

In conclusion, considering that modern robots are causing some global problems, however I do believe that these devices has positive sides.

1. Are you interested in robots?

Yes. I’ve always been curious about the potential of robots since I was a kid. I read a lot of books and watched a lot of movies about robots back then, and now robots are still something that piques my interest .

I know that robots are machines that are designed to perform tasks  autonomously  or  semi-autonomously . They come in various shapes and sizes, and they are widely used in today’s world. For example, robots are commonly used in  manufacturing industries to  assemble  products with  precision  and efficiency.

3. Do you use robots in your daily life?

Yes, I do use robots in my daily life to some extent. For example, I have a robotic vacuum cleaner at home that helps me keep the floors clean without much effort. It’s quite convenient as it operates on its own, navigating through the rooms and picking up dust and debris. Additionally, I also interact with virtual assistants on my smartphone, like Siri or Google Assistant, which use artificial intelligence to understand and respond to my voice commands. While these may not be humanoid robots, they are still technological devices that assist me in various aspects of my daily routine.

Yes, I would feel comfortable being in a car driven by a robot. The advancements in autonomous vehicle technology have made significant strides in ensuring safety. Robots are programmed to follow traffic rules and regulations, which reduces the likelihood of accidents. Additionally, they don’t experience fatigue or distractions , contributing to a potentially safer driving experience.

As I said, I’ve watched a lot of movies about this topic since I was a kid. I was even afraid that one day robots might even take over the earth like in the Terminator. I believe advanced robots like in movies may be real one day. Who knows?
