CBSE Class 9 Science Practicals

CBSE Practicals of Class 9 Science are equally important as the theory subject. By performing the practicals, students will learn by actual participation, which lasts in their memory for a longer time. Generally, most students forget the concepts that they have learnt in theory classes. But, when they perform the Science practicals, they remember it for a longer period. CBSE Class 9 Science Practicals – Syllabus, Lab Manual and Kit

The CBSE Board has provided the official syllabus for Class 9 Science practicals. Also, the Board has allocated 30 periods for conducting all the practicals.  Here, we have provided a list of Science experiments that students need to perform in the laboratory. CBSE Class 9 Science Practicals Syllabus – List of Experiments

1) Preparation of:

a) A true solution of common salt, sugar and alum

b) A suspension of soil, chalk powder and fine sand in water

c) A colloidal solution of starch in water and egg albumin/milk in water and distinguish between these on the basis of

  • transparency
  • filtration criterion

2) Preparation of:

a) A mixture

b) A compound

using iron filings and sulphur powder and distinguishing between these on the basis of:

(i) Appearance, i.e., homogeneity and heterogeneity

(ii) Behaviour towards a magnet

(iii) Behaviour towards carbon disulphide as a solvent

(iv) Effect of heat

3) Perform the following reactions and classify them as physical or chemical changes:

a) Iron with copper sulphate solution in water

b) Burning of magnesium ribbon in air

c) Zinc with dilute sulphuric acid

d) Heating of copper sulphate crystals

e) Sodium sulphate with barium chloride in the form of their solutions in water

4) Preparation of stained temporary mounts of

(a) Onion peel

(b) Human cheek cells and to record observations and draw their labelled diagrams

5) Identification of Parenchyma, Collenchyma and Sclerenchyma tissues in plants, striped, smooth and cardiac muscle fibres and nerve cells in animals from prepared slides. Draw their labelled diagrams.

6) Determination of the melting point of ice and the boiling point of water.

7) Verification of the laws of reflection of sound.

8) Determination of the density of a solid (denser than water) by using a spring balance and a measuring cylinder.

9) Establishing the relation between the loss in weight of a solid when fully immersed in

a) Tap water

b) Strongly salty water with the weight of water displaced by it by taking at least two different solids

10) Determination of the speed of a pulse propagated through a stretched string/slinky (helical spring).

11) Verification of the law of conservation of mass in a chemical reaction.

CBSE Class 9 Science Laboratory Manuals

Students performing experiments by themselves will get a thrilling experience as they learn by participating. All the experiments are performed in the school Science laboratory. So, students must be aware of certain rules and regulations before performing experiments in the laboratory. For this purpose, the CBSE Class 9 Science lab manual has been provided by the Board. The laboratory manual familiarises students with the general facilities, chemical and glassware, measuring instruments, equipment, and specimen available in a school Science laboratory. The mass per unit volume of a substance is defined as the density of the substance. The formula for density is: 

\[Density = \dfrac{{Mass}}{{Volume}}\] . 

S.I. unit of density is \[Kg/{m^3}\] . The ratio of a density of a substance to the ratio of the density of reference (water, in our case) is defined as the Relative density of the substance. The difference between density and relative density is that the density is mass divided by volume (its unit is ${kg/m^3}$). In contrast, relative density is the density of a substance divided by the density of reference (it has no units).

The density of water is 1000 \[Kg/{m^3}\] . So, if the density of the solid is less than the water, then the solids will float on the water, and if the density of the solid is more than the water, i.e., the solid is denser, the solid will sink in water.

Spring balance is used to measure the weight of a substance, and weight can be defined as the force on an object due to the earth's gravity.

Force = mass x acceleration, 

As weight is a force, so weight = mass x acceleration due to gravity, 

Weight = m x g

Tie the metal object with a string and attach the string to the hook of the spring balance. Take the reading of spring balance before attaching a metal object. Write it down as ‘x’. Make sure it’s zero. This is called zero error.

Tie the spring balance to the stand or hold it in hand. Measure the weight of the object. Consider this weight as ‘W F ’.

Pour water into a given measuring cylinder. And note down its initial volume as ‘V 1 ’.

Now put the metal object in a measuring cylinder which contains water. Do not let the object touch the sides of the cylinder or base. The water level rises after putting metal objects in the cylinder. Now note down the increased volume in the measuring cylinder. Write this volume as ‘V 2 ’.

Take some more readings and perform the calculations to find the density of a given metal object.

Make sure the spring balance reads zero initially.

Take all the readings of spring balance and measuring cylinder carefully such that your eyes are parallel to the reading.

Make sure that the metal object does not touch the sides of the cylinder.

Ans: We cannot find the density of porous solid using spring balance and measuring cylinder. Because the porous solid will absorb water, the mass of the solid will increase instead of decrease. This will affect the volume of water displaced.

2. How will the presence of air bubbles in the measuring cylinder affect the volume of the solid?

Ans: Air bubbles in liquid in the measuring cylinder will affect volume because air bubbles will occupy some space in the liquid, increasing the volume of the liquid.

3. What will happen to the density if we melt a metal cylinder and cast it in the shape of a cube? Give reason

Ans: Density will remain the same as the mass, and the volume of water displaced by the cylinder and cube will remain the same. So, the density will also remain the same.

4. At what temperature the density of water is maximum?

Ans: The density of water is maximum at 4 0 C.

1. Why do solids have higher density?

In solids, particles are very closely arranged. They have very few intermolecular spaces in between particles. In liquids, particles are not closely arranged. They have intermolecular spaces in between particles. Due to these low intermolecular spaces, solids have high density. In gases, the intermolecular spaces are even higher. Therefore, gases have even lesser density than solids. In the case of density, solids>liquids>gases. Solids are denser than liquids. Liquids are denser than gases.

2. What is the Volume of a solid?

The volume of solid measures the amount of space an object takes up. It can be measured by the number of unit cubes needed to fill the solid. Mass can never be zero, whereas weight can be zero where there is no gravity. Mass is a scalar quantity. It does not have direction; it has only magnitude, while weight is a vector quantity. It has magnitude and direction too. The unit of mass is g or kg. The unit of weight is N(Newton). Weight is a force, and mass is not a force.

4. When does the solid expand?

When we heat a solid, atoms vibrate faster around their fixed points. The relative increase in size is when heated is small. Metal railway tracks are kept small because the size increases when they heat due to the sun's heat. And the tracks fill small gaps and don’t buckle up on each other. This happens due to kinetic energy. This expansion decreases the density of the solid because the mass amount remains the same, but the volume it requires is increased.

1. Mention the two precautions to determine the boiling point of water in laboratory.

(i) The position of bulb should be slightly above the water level.

(ii) Stir the water continuously in beaker so that temperature should remain constant

2. The frequency of a source of sound is 100 Hz. How many times does it vibrate in a minute?

Number of vibrations produced in 1s = 100

Number of vibrations produced in 60 sec = 100 × 60 = 6000

Now, 1 minute = 60 seconds

Thus, number of vibrations produced in one minute = 6000

3. In which of the two, glycerine or kerosene, the loss in weight of a solid when fully immersed in them will be more and why ?

Density of glycerine is more than that of kerosene.

A liquid having higher density exerts more upthrust force on object than other liquid having low density. Thus, greater the density of a liquid, the more will be the the buoyant force exerted on the object immersed in it.  Now, due to this greater upthrust (buyont force), the object experiences greater apparent weight loss .

Thus in case of glycerine, the loss in weight of a solid when fully immersed in it will be more than when immersed in kerosene.

4. A sound wave travels at a speed of 340m/s. If its wavelength is 2 cm, what is the frequency of the wave? Will it be in the audible range?

It is given that,

Velocity of sound, v = 340 m/s

Wavelength, λ = 1.4 m

Frequency, ν =?

We know that, speed = wavelength × frequency

⟹          340 = 1.4 x ν ⟹              ν = 340/1.4 = 242.86 Hz As the audible range is between 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz Here, 242.86 Hz < 20,000 Hz Therefore it is in the audible range.

5. When dipped in a fluid, name the factor on which the loss in weight of a solid depends. Name the two forces which act upon the solid dipped in the fluid.

  • True weight of the body acting vertically downwards.
  • Buoyant force or upward thrust acting vertically upwards.

6. In an experiment to determine the boiling point of water, state reason for the following:

(i) Pumice stone pieces are added to water in the beaker.

(ii) A glass stirrer is used.

(i) Pumice stone is added to avoid any bumping of water. When the temperature is raised for boiling the water, it starts to bump. But pumice stone being porous, provides space for air. This reduces bubbling in hot water to facilitate the boiling process.

(ii) A glass stirrer is used to ensure uniform heating of water.

7. A mixture of sand, powdered glass and common salt is dissolved in water and then filtered. Name the substance left on filter paper. Name the substance in the filtrate.

Out of the given three substances only common salt is soluble in water whereas both sand and powdered glass are insoluble in water. Thus when a mixture of sand, powdered glass and common salt is dissolved in water and then filtered sand and powdered glass would be left on filter paper while common salt will be present in the filtrate. 

8. A free falling object eventually stops on reaching the ground. What happens to its kinetic energy?

Its kinetic energy will be zero on reaching the ground. Actually, when an object falls freely towards the ground, its potential energy decreases and kinetic energy increases. But as soon as the object touches the ground, all its potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy and finally when the ball stops after hitting the ground, all its kinetic energy gets converted into heat energy and sound energy.

11. List any two precautions you must take while finding the melting point of ice and boiling point of water.

(i)  The bulb of the thermometer should be completely inside the crushed ice.

(ii) The thermometer should not touch the wall of the beaker.

12. When a body hanging with the hook of a spring balance is immersed in a liquid, state the factor due to which the reading of spring balance decreases. Define the factor.

The factor due to which the reading of spring balance immersed in a liquid decreases is buoyant force or upthrust.

Buoyant force (upthrust) is the upward force exerted by any fluid upon a body immersed in it.

13. A student recorded the mass of dry raisins as 2.0 g and mass of raisins after soaking as 3.5 g. Calculate the percentage of water absorbed by raisins. Write one precaution for this experiment.

Mass of dry raisins = 2.0 g

Mass of raisins after soaking = 3.5 g

Mass of water absorbed = 3.5 – 2.0 = 1.5 g

14. Mention two features adopted by birds which help them to fly.

  • Streamlined body shape which helps them to cut the air flow.
  • Light bones reduce their overall body weight to help in easy flight.

15. Which of the following will show Tyndall effect?

(a) Salt solution

(c) Copper sulphate solution

(d) Starch solution

Milk and starch solution are colloids and hence will show Tyndall effect.

16. When the wire of a guitar is plucked, what types of wave are produced in (i) air and (ii) wire? Give reasons in support of your answer.

(i) When the wire of a guitar is plucked, a longitudinal wave is produced in air due to the to and fro motion of string of guitar. (ii) In the wire of guitar, transverse wave is produced as the particle vibrates perpendicular to the direction of motion.

17. Explain how both physical and chemical changes take place during the burning of a candle.

Wax of the candle undergoes the combustion process to produce light and heat along with the liberation of carbon dioxide gas and water vapour. This is a chemical change. As a result, the candle melts and its shape is deformed. This is a physical change. So, during the burning of a candle, both physical and chemical changes take place.

18. The given figure represents a tissue found in the human body.

(a) The figure shows simple columnar epithelial tissue. Its main functions include absorption and secretion.

19. There are two nails; one sharp and other blunt with the point surface areas being 0.1 m 2 and 1.5 m 2 , respectively. These nails are to be hammered into a wooden plank. Which nail will be hammered more easily if the force applied on hammer is 200 N for both nails? Also calculate the pressure required to hammer each nail.

Let nail A be sharper than another nail B. Thus, the surface area covered by the nail A is lesser than that of nail B. Therefore, more pressure will be produced on nail A leading it to move inside the wooden plank more easily than nail B.

Finding pressure required to hammer each nail

Now, Area of nail A = 0.1 m 2

Area of nail B = 1.5 m

Force applied on both nails= 200 N

20. While verifying the laws of reflection of sound, a student measured the angle between the incident sound wave and reflected sound wave as 100°. What will be the angle of reflection?

Given that the angle between incident sound wave and reflected sound wave = 100°

laws of reflection of sound wave

⇒ angle of incidence (i) + angle of reflection (r) = 100 o          …(i)

But, according to the law of reflection of sound, the angle of the incident sound wave is equal to the angle of the reflected sound wave.

⇒              ∠i = ∠r

Thus, equation (i) becomes:

          ∠i + ∠i = 100 o

⇒            2∠i = 100 o

⇒              ∠i = 50 o

Thus, angle of reflection, r = ∠i = 50 o
