In a short paper—even a research paper—you don’t need to provide an exhaustive summary as part of your conclusion. But you do need to make some kind of transition between your final body paragraph and your concluding paragraph. This may come in the form of a few sentences of summary. Or it may come in the form of a sentence that brings your readers back to your thesis or main idea and reminds your readers where you began and how far you have traveled.
So, for example, in a paper about the relationship between ADHD and rejection sensitivity, Vanessa Roser begins by introducing readers to the fact that researchers have studied the relationship between the two conditions and then provides her explanation of that relationship. Here’s her thesis: “While socialization may indeed be an important factor in RS, I argue that individuals with ADHD may also possess a neurological predisposition to RS that is exacerbated by the differing executive and emotional regulation characteristic of ADHD.”
In her final paragraph, Roser reminds us of where she started by echoing her thesis: “This literature demonstrates that, as with many other conditions, ADHD and RS share a delicately intertwined pattern of neurological similarities that is rooted in the innate biology of an individual’s mind, a connection that cannot be explained in full by the behavioral mediation hypothesis.”
Highlight the “so what”
At the beginning of your paper, you explain to your readers what’s at stake—why they should care about the argument you’re making. In your conclusion, you can bring readers back to those stakes by reminding them why your argument is important in the first place. You can also draft a few sentences that put those stakes into a new or broader context.
In the conclusion to her paper about ADHD and RS, Roser echoes the stakes she established in her introduction—that research into connections between ADHD and RS has led to contradictory results, raising questions about the “behavioral mediation hypothesis.”
She writes, “as with many other conditions, ADHD and RS share a delicately intertwined pattern of neurological similarities that is rooted in the innate biology of an individual’s mind, a connection that cannot be explained in full by the behavioral mediation hypothesis.”
Leave your readers with the “now what”
After the “what” and the “so what,” you should leave your reader with some final thoughts. If you have written a strong introduction, your readers will know why you have been arguing what you have been arguing—and why they should care. And if you’ve made a good case for your thesis, then your readers should be in a position to see things in a new way, understand new questions, or be ready for something that they weren’t ready for before they read your paper.
In her conclusion, Roser offers two “now what” statements. First, she explains that it is important to recognize that the flawed behavioral mediation hypothesis “seems to place a degree of fault on the individual. It implies that individuals with ADHD must have elicited such frequent or intense rejection by virtue of their inadequate social skills, erasing the possibility that they may simply possess a natural sensitivity to emotion.” She then highlights the broader implications for treatment of people with ADHD, noting that recognizing the actual connection between rejection sensitivity and ADHD “has profound implications for understanding how individuals with ADHD might best be treated in educational settings, by counselors, family, peers, or even society as a whole.”
To find your own “now what” for your essay’s conclusion, try asking yourself these questions:
- What can my readers now understand, see in a new light, or grapple with that they would not have understood in the same way before reading my paper? Are we a step closer to understanding a larger phenomenon or to understanding why what was at stake is so important?
- What questions can I now raise that would not have made sense at the beginning of my paper? Questions for further research? Other ways that this topic could be approached?
- Are there other applications for my research? Could my questions be asked about different data in a different context? Could I use my methods to answer a different question?
- What action should be taken in light of this argument? What action do I predict will be taken or could lead to a solution?
- What larger context might my argument be a part of?
What to avoid in your conclusion
- a complete restatement of all that you have said in your paper.
- a substantial counterargument that you do not have space to refute; you should introduce counterarguments before your conclusion.
- an apology for what you have not said. If you need to explain the scope of your paper, you should do this sooner—but don’t apologize for what you have not discussed in your paper.
- fake transitions like “in conclusion” that are followed by sentences that aren’t actually conclusions. (“In conclusion, I have now demonstrated that my thesis is correct.”)

Remember that thesis statement which you wrote in the first or second paragraph of your essay? You know, the one where you stated a claim about something? You argued something about a topic and you used the body paragraphs to prove your thesis statement through all of the research that you've performed.
Now that you've fully explained the research and the support for your thesis statement throughout the body of the paper, it's time to come back to that original idea in the conclusion. The conclusion basically asks us to do a few things:
- Restate the main idea of the paper (why you wrote this entire long piece to begin with).
- Summarize all the key points you made throughout the body of the paper (things that proved your thesis statement).
- Write about why this paper and topic are important, and leave the reader with ideas for additional research or maybe some questions that didn't get answered. The idea is that you want to leave the reader with a long-lasting impression. This is your opportunity to really drive your point home and to use some really interesting language.

Finally, and most egregiously, Ross had a terrible reaction when Rachel told Ross she was pregnant after Monica and Chandler's wedding, making him an undesirable romantic partner for her, or any other character on the show for that matter. This conclusion is especially apparent after viewing the show more than 10 years after the final episode aired and having a collectively better understanding of women's rights and domestic abuse in relationships.
Essay conclusion 2 — Should students be allowed to have cell phones in elementary school?
In conclusion, although it's easy to see why allowing an elementary school child to have a cell phone would be convenient for after-school pickups or arranging playdates with friends, there is too much evidence to show that it's generally not a good idea. Children already have a lot of access to media (on average over seven hours per day) and it is the parent's responsibility to monitor their media access, which is more difficult if the child has exclusive cell phone access. Cyber bullying, which is increasingly becoming a problem, is also going to be a risk when your child has unlimited access to a smart phone. Clearly, elementary school-aged children are not emotionally mature enough to handle the responsibility of a smart phone, and the borrowing of a parent's cell phone should be highly monitored to ensure safe and healthful usage.

It's clear that sexual education is completely vital to the public-school curriculum. Not only does this lead to a better understanding of human development and human sexuality, but awareness and sex education also reduce the rates of teen pregnancy. Learning about contraception and how to use contraception correctly ultimately leads to lower rates of STDs. Lastly, comprehensive sex education also teaches students about consensual sex, and will hopefully lead to healthier sexual relationships and lower rates of sexual assault in the future. Not only should sex education be taught in public schools, but it should be mandatory for all public-school systems.

Women have outnumbered men on the payroll in nonfarm jobs since 2010, but even with a majority of females in the office, there are still huge challenges for them at work. One of the biggest issues, which has been widely covered and debated on, is the fact that women still earn less of a wage for the same job as their male counterparts. Now that women are the breadwinners of many families, this is stunting economic growth and opportunity for their children. Additionally, women are less likely to be in charge at work. With less than 6% of Fortune 500 companies with a female CEO, women have a steeper hill to climb at the very top echelon of jobs. With a more level playing field, women's opportunities will increase and the workforce will ultimately be more inviting for all.

Here’s the question you’ve probably got: what’s the difference between an introduction and a conclusion?
My advice is to use my two frameworks on how to write and conclusion and how to write an introduction:
- Write an introduction with the Perfect Introduction INTRO method ;
- Write a conclusion with the Perfect Conclusion FIVE-C method that I outline below.
As a university teacher, I have marked well over a thousand essays.
In my time, the best conclusions I’ve seen have tended to sum-up a topic by showing-off how well the writer knows the topic and how effectively they have come to their conclusions.
The best conclusions also convincingly show why the topic is important.
In this post, I will show you how to write a conclusion that will amaze your teacher.
This formula is called the FIVE-C’s method and works for nearly every essay.
This method walks you through five potential strategies that you can use in your conclusion. I will show you all five steps and give examples for each to model how to go about writing a good quality conclusion.
How to write a Conclusion: The Five-C Conclusion Method
1 Close the loop. Return to a statement you made in the introduction.
2 Conclude. Show what your final position is.
3 Clarify. Clarify how your final position is relevant to the Essay Question.
4 Concern. Explain who should be concerned by your findings.
5 Consequences. End by noting in one final, engaging sentence why this topic is of such importance.
For each of these steps, I recommend between one and two sentences to create a full detailed conclusion paragraph . You do not have to use each and every one of these steps every time.
Remember, once you’ve written your ideas, make sure you edit the conclusion to make sure it flows the way you want it to. Don’t feel like you have to stick exactly to these rules.
Here’s each step broken down one by one:
1. Close the Loop: Refer back to a statement from the Introduction
Have you ever noticed that comedians often start and end a show with the same joke? This method is called a “ Callback ” in stand-up comedy and is widely considered to be a very effective way to end on a high. I use this as an advanced form of transitioning to a conclusion .
Well, you can do this in your essay, too. Try to find a key statement you made in the introduction and return to it. In this way, you’re closing the look and ending your essay by tying it up in a thoughtful, memorable way.
Here’s a Tip: Forget about starting your conclusion with the tired old statement “In conclusion, …” and instead start it with “This essay began by stating that …” and continue from there.
Imagine you have an essay on “Should Fake News on Facebook be Regulated?” You might state an interesting ‘hook’ statement in the introduction such as:
- Intro Hook : “Mark Zuckerberg faced US congress in late 2018 to defend Facebook’s record of regulating Facebook News. He claimed that Facebook needs to do a better job of verifying the identities of Facebook users.”
You can return back to this interesting statement in the conclusion. For example:
- Close the Loop in the Conclusion: “This essay began by noting that Mark Zuckerberg accepts that Facebook needs to do a better job at regulation on the platform. As this essay has shown, it appears Facebook continues to be incapable to regulating content on its platform. Therefore, governments should step-in with minimum benchmarks for Facebook to adhere to for all advertising and news content.”
Closing the loop is a great literary strategy to tie up your essay and memorably conclude your argument.
2. Conclude: Provide a Final Evaluation by Referring back to your Arguments
Of course, a conclusion needs provide a final evaluative statement. If your essay is a persuasive or argumentative essay that asks you to take a stand, this is even more important.
The risk students run here is making their writing sound like propaganda. To prevent this, ensure your statement is balanced.
I like to use the formula below:
- Refer to evidence. In the first third of the sentence, refer back to the arguments in the essay.
- Use a hedging statement. Hedges when writing analysis verbs make your work sound more balanced and contemplative, and less biased. Hedges make you sound wise. A hedging statement withholds from being overly confident and unequivocal and softens your claims. Common hedges are: “it appears”, “it seems”, “the best current evidence is”, and “it is likely the case that”. These are the opposite of Boosters, which you should avoid. A booster is a statement like: “the data confirms”, “the truth of the matter is” and “it is undoubtedly true that”.
- State your conclusion. Conclude the sentence with your final evaluation.
Let’s have a look at how to use this formula of: Refer to evidence + Use a hedging statement + State your conclusion. See below:
Here’s an example. Imagine your essay question was “Should all recreational drugs be decriminalised?” You could state in your final evaluation:
- (1) The evidence from both population data and criminological studies that were presented in this article (2) appears to indicate that (3) decriminalization of drugs would both save money and decrease drug overdoses.
This is far better than a propagandizing statement like:
- This essay has totally debunked the idea that the war on drugs has done any good for society. Decriminalizing drugs will save money and lives, and it should be done immediately.
The first example sentence above would almost always get a higher grade than the second. It shows balance and reduces the chance your reader will accuse you of bias. This is a secret sauce for top marks: hedge, hedge and hedge some more!

3. Clarify: Clarify the relevance of your statement to the Essay Question.
Read back through your conclusion and make sure that it directly answers the essay question. Too often, students write a few thousand words and end up talking about something completely different to what they began with.
Remember: you’re being marked on something very specific. It doesn’t matter how great and well formulated your argument is if it doesn’t answer the specific essay question.
To ensure you conclusion clearly addresses the research question, you might want to paraphrase some phrases from the essay question.
Here are some examples:
- If your essay question is about Nurses’ bedside manner, you’re probably going to want to use the phrase “bedside manner” in the conclusion a few times.
- If your essay question is about comparing renaissance and classical art, you better make sure you use the terms “renaissance art” and “classical art” a few times in that conclusion!

4. Concern: Who should be concerned with this topic?
One of the best indicators that you know a topic well is to show how it relates to real life. The topic you have discussed is likely to have some relevance to someone, somewhere, out there in the world.
Make sure you state who it is that should be paying attention to your essay. Here’s my top suggestions for people who may be concerned with the topic:
- Policy makers. Is this a topic where new laws or regulations need to be introduced that could improve people’s lives? If so, you could provide a statement that explains that “Policy makers should …” do something in light of the evidence you have provided.
- Practitioners. If you’re doing a university degree that ends with a specific career, chances are the topic is relevant to that career. If you’re writing an essay on teaching methods, the essay is probably going to be something that teachers should be concerned about. Here’s an example: “Teachers need to know about children’s different learning styles in order to make sure their lessons are inclusive of all learning styles in the classroom.”
You’re in the best position to know who should be concerned with your topic. I can be any key stakeholder at all: parents, children, new immigrants, prisoners, prison guards, nurses, doctors, museum curators … you name it! It really depends on your topic.
5. Consequences: End by stating why the topic is important.
Your final statement can be something inspiring, interesting and relevant to real life. This is the opposite to the ‘hook’ in the introduction. While the hook draws your reader into the essay, your closing sentence sends your reader back out into the world, hopefully utterly convinced by you that this is a topic worthy of reflecting upon.
Here are some examples of a final sentence:
- “The sheer number of Shakespearian words and phrases that are common in the English language should show why Shakespeare remains the most significant literary figure in British history.”
- “The disastrous consequences of American regime change wars in the middle east that have been outlined in this paper highlights the case that the United States should not intervene in the Venezuelan political crisis.”
Remember when I said earlier that using hedges is good for your argument? The final sentence in the essay is the one place where maybe, just maybe, you can use the opposite: a Booster.

The conclusion is a very important part of your essay. Although it is sometimes treated as a roundup of all of the bits that didn’t fit into the paper earlier, it deserves better treatment than that! It's the last thing the reader will see, so it tends to stick in the reader's memory. It's also a great place to remind the reader exactly why your topic is important. A conclusion is more than just "the last paragraph"—it's a working part of the paper. This is the place to push your reader to think about the consequences of your topic for the wider world or for the reader's own life!
A good conclusion should do a few things:
Restate your thesis
Synthesize or summarize your major points
Make the context of your argument clear
Restating Your Thesis
You've already spent time and energy crafting a solid thesis statement for your introduction, and if you've done your job right, your whole paper focuses on that thesis statement. That's why it's so important to address the thesis in your conclusion! Many writers choose to begin the conclusion by restating the thesis, but you can put your thesis into the conclusion anywhere—the first sentence of the paragraph, the last sentence, or in between. Here are a few tips for rephrasing your thesis:
Remind the reader that you've proven this thesis over the course of your paper. For example, if you're arguing that your readers should get their pets from animal shelters rather than pet stores, you might say, "If you were considering that puppy in the pet-shop window, remember that your purchase will support 'puppy mills' instead of rescuing a needy dog, and consider selecting your new friend at your local animal shelter." This example gives the reader not only the thesis of the paper, but a reminder of the most powerful point in the argument!
Revise the thesis statement so that it reflects the relationship you've developed with the reader during the paper. For example, if you've written a paper that targets parents of young children, you can find a way to phrase your thesis to capitalize on that—maybe by beginning your thesis statement with, "As a parent of a young child…"
Don’t repeat your thesis word for word—make sure that your new statement is an independent, fresh sentence!
Summary or Synthesis
This section of the conclusion might come before the thesis statement or after it. Your conclusion should remind the reader of what your paper actually says! The best conclusion will include a synthesis, not just a summary—instead of a mere list of your major points, the best conclusion will draw those points together and relate them to one another so that your reader can apply the information given in the essay. Here are a couple of ways to do that:
Give a list of the major arguments for your thesis (usually, these are the topic sentences of the parts of your essay).
Explain how these parts are connected. For example, in the animal-shelter essay, you might point out that adopting a shelter dog helps more animals because your adoption fee supports the shelter, which makes your choice more socially responsible.
One of the most important functions of the conclusion is to provide context for your argument. Your reader may finish your essay without a problem and understand your argument without understanding why that argument is important. Your introduction might point out the reason your topic matters, but your conclusion should also tackle this questions. Here are some strategies for making your reader see why the topic is important:
Tell the reader what you want him or her to do. Is your essay a call to action? If so, remind the reader of what he/she should do. If not, remember that asking the reader to think a certain way is an action in itself. (In the above examples, the essay asks the reader to adopt a shelter dog—a specific action.)
Explain why this topic is timely or important. For example, the animal-shelter essay might end with a statistic about the number of pets in shelters waiting for adoption.
Remind the readers of why the topic matters to them personally. For example, it doesn’t matter much if you believe in the mission of animal shelters, if you're not planning to get a dog; however, once you're looking for a dog, it is much more important. The conclusion of this essay might say, "Since you’re in the market for a dog, you have a major decision to make: where to get one." This will remind the reader that the argument is personally important!

Conclusions aren’t especially difficult to write and can even be fun, but you still need to put in effort to make them work. Ultimately, a strong conclusion is just as important as an effective introduction for a successful paper.

How to Write a Conclusion in 3 Easy Steps
Step 1: restate your thesis claim and evidence.
The conclusion’s primary role is to convince the reader that your argument is valid. Whereas the introduction paragraph says, “Here’s what I’ll prove and how,” the conclusion paragraph says, “Here’s what I proved and how.” In that sense, these two paragraphs should closely mirror each other, with the conclusion restating the thesis introduced at the beginning of the essay.
In order to restate your thesis effectively, you’ll need to do the following:

Introduction
It is a known fact that archaic civilizations with clearly defined social classes often survived longer than those without. One anomaly is seventh-century Civilization X. Close analysis of the cultural artifacts of the Civilization X region reveals that a social system that operates on exploitation, rather than sharing, will always fail. This lack of inclusion actually leads to a society’s downfall. Excavated military objects, remnants of tapestries and clay pots, and the poetry of the era all demonstrate the clash between exploitation and sharing, with the former leading to loss and the latter leading to success.
In the 600s C.E., Civilization X survived because it believed in inclusion and sharing rather than exploitation. As demonstrated, the civilization was often aware of the choice between sharing with others and taking from them. The cultural artifacts from the era, namely military items, household objects, and verbal art, all indicate that Civilization X believed sharing ensured survival for all, while taking allowed only a few to survive for a shorter time.
Step 2: Provide New and Interesting Insight
In addition to restating the thesis, a conclusion should emphasize the importance of the essay’s argument by building upon it. In other words, you want to push your ideas one step beyond your thesis. One intriguing insight at the end can leave your professor pondering your paper well after they finish reading it — and that’s a good sign you turned in a well-written essay.
Note that the conclusion paragraph must only mention that this new idea exists and deserves some focus in the future; it shouldn’t discuss the idea in detail or try to propose a new argument.
The new insight you raise in your conclusion should ideally come from the research you already conducted. Should a new idea come to you while writing the body paragraphs, go ahead and make a note to remind you to allude to it in your conclusion.
Here are some typical starting points for these new insights:
Step 3: Form a Personal Connection With the Reader
The final step when writing a conclusion paragraph is to include a small detail about yourself. This information will help you build a more intimate bond with your reader and help them remember you better. Think of this step as an opportunity to connect the academic research to your and your reader’s personal lives — to forge a human bond between the lines.
Formal essay-writing typically avoids first- and second-person pronouns such as “I” and “you.” There are, however, two exceptions to this rule, and these are the introduction and conclusion paragraphs.
In the conclusion, you may use first-person pronouns to attempt to establish an emotional connection with the reader.
In the introduction, you may use the words “I” or “me” just once to clarify that the essay’s claim is your own. In the conclusion, you may use first-person pronouns to attempt to establish an emotional connection with the reader, as long as this connection is related in some way to the overarching claim.
Here’s an example of a conclusion paragraph that uses both first- and second-person pronouns to connect the thesis statement (provided above) to the student’s own perspective on stealing:
Civilization X believed that invading Civilization Y would help them survive long, hunger-inducing winters. But all people go through moments when they crave security, especially in times of scarcity. I would certainly never consider taking the belongings of a neighbor, nor, I expect, would you. Yet we must consider the Civilization X artifacts that justify “taking” as signs of more than simple bloodthirst — they are also revelations of the basic human need for security. Perhaps if we had lived during the 600s C.E., you and I would have also taken from others, even while commanding others not to take from us.

Whether in high school or already attending college, you have many academic writing assignments ahead of you. You’ll write research papers, opinion pieces, argumentative essays, lab reports, thesis statements, analyses, and more. Improving your writing is a must if you want to be successful.
When writing an academic paper, you’re expected to use formal, academic language and write well-cited content . There are many words to avoid in academic writing. Follow the writing tips below to figure out which words not to use in a research paper and formal writing.
Personal Pronouns
You should avoid personal pronouns like “I,” “me,” and “my” in almost all academic writing. In most cases, your work will be research- or evidence-based. Inserting yourself into the argument reduces your paper’s credibility, as professors want ideas you can source.
Even most opinion pieces should not contain personal pronouns. Again, you’re arguing using research-backed logic, not your personal opinions.
Vague Wording
Vague wording includes any words that create ambiguity by talking around the point instead of giving information directly.
Vague wording can confuse readers, preventing them from reading your whole essay and muddling your point. This can damage your credibility as a writer for the future.
Ambiguity works against the point of writing an essay, which is to deliver information and defend one side of an argument. The confusion created by vague wording takes away from your argument and can invalidate your research.
Vague wording can present itself in a variety of ways. One way is failing to identify who did something. The writer might use the word “it” without a clear antecedent or use a pronoun without clarifying who they mean, leaving the reader unsure to whom the writer is referring.
Then there is what is happening, which can be vague if the writer uses vague quantifiers (some, many, few) or “this” or “that” without specific references. If you can ask, “Who did this?” or “What is this?” and the answer isn’t in the text, you need to clarify it for the reader.
Informal Language
With the exception of rare circumstances which your professor would alert you to, informal language should be avoided in academic writing. While both informal and formal language have their purpose and their audience, it’s important to know when those circumstances are.
Informal language is spontaneous and casual, with a very unfocused tone. You use it to communicate with friends, family, and coworkers to get immediate feedback or message them. It would seem strange or wrong to be too formal with a close friend and equally strange to be too informal with a stranger or person of authority.
Informal language uses many of the words on this list. It uses personal pronouns and has cliches, contractions, and slang. Using informal language often leads to text that jumps from thought to thought in the same way it would if someone were having a conversation.
Cliches and Overused Expressions
Cliches are phrases that have been so overused that they feel bland and boring. Some common examples of wordy cliches that don’t add to the text are “thinking outside the box” and “better safe than sorry.”
When you use a cliche, it makes it hard for your professor to take you seriously. Cliches aren’t original, and since they don’t add anything to the essay, they can weaken any research you’ve done and your credibility as a writer. The more cliches you use, the worse it gets.
Common cliches can be replaced to convey the same information without relying on overused expressions.
“At the end of the day” and “the fact of the matter” are ways of concluding or ending a thought. It can be replaced with “in conclusion” or “this proves.”
“Think outside the box,” “on the same page,” and “in this day and age” can be omitted completely. They are conversational and would be obvious based on the rest of the essay. If you had never heard these phrases before, would it be confusing? What box? What page? Don’t assume your reader knows the same cliches as you.
“Needless to say” and “time will tell” offer no information to an essay and shift the tone from academic to informal writing.
“Paradigm shift” means a sudden change to fundamental properties, but it’s been overused. If you use this cliche for its intended meaning, explain what a paradigm is and then how the shift relates to your research.
Cliches also often make your essays wordier than they have to be. Look for other ways to get your point across, and try to stick to your own voice as much as possible.
Weak Modifiers & Overused Adverbs
Weak modifiers and overused adverbs often seem helpful when you’re using them but do nothing to strengthen your points. A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause used to strengthen, clarify, or intensify meaning in a sentence. Weak modifiers do not add to the meaning of a sentence and can even detract from it. Examples include “merely,” “rather,” and “fairly.”
Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Below is a list of words considered overused adverbs:
Professors consider weak modifiers and overused adverbs filler words because they add to the word count but don’t add meaning. You can often improve a sentence by taking out these words. If the sentence still lacks meaning, try a stronger adjective or verb.
Passive Voice
Understanding passive voice can be challenging. In a sentence, you will often have an actor and a receiver of the action. When you make the receiver the subject of a sentence and the actor the object, it doesn’t read well and is wordier than the active version.
Consider these two sentences:
- Active voice: Liam took Jakob to the movies.
- Passive voice: Jakob was taken to the movies by Liam.
You’ll notice that in the active example, the first person mentioned is the one doing the action. The second person is the one receiving the action. It reads much more clearly than the second example.
It’s crucial to avoid passive voice when possible. You should try to avoid passive voice in informal writing, as it almost always makes your writing awkward and difficult to read.
Absolute or Overgeneralized Terms
Absolute and overgeneralized terms are words or phrases like “always,” “literally,” and “never” that are used in everyday conversation to emphasize a point. The person speaking usually doesn’t intend for the absolute definition to be believed.
However, essays are arguments that you are attempting to defend or prove with evidence, and using those terms in an essay without proof of the absolute weakens your argument and credibility. The true meaning of these words should be honored, and they are virtually impossible to prove and should be used cautiously when you can confidently prove them.
Some common absolute/overgeneralized terms are:
- Always – With rare exceptions, it is very difficult to prove that something is true without any exceptions. Say that something happens often and show evidence.
- Never – Like “always,” it only takes one time to prove this word wrong. Use words like rarely or show proof that something hasn’t happened yet.
- Every or all – Quantify the term and use data to show your point rather than use a general term. Instead of writing every volunteer or all volunteers, show what the research says and give the reader a mental picture. For example, a group of twelve volunteers conducted the experiment and twelve experienced changes.
- None – Like “never,” show the proof you have that shows the opposite. Then, the onus is placed on the reader to prove otherwise.
- Absolutely or undoubtedly – Again, to use these terms requires you to prove that the contrary has never happened, which is virtually impossible. Instead, say that the opposite has yet to be shown.
Redundant Words and Phrases
Redundant words and phrases like absolutes are often used in conversation to emphasize a point. In academic writing, they are repetitive, unnecessary, and can impact the clarity of your writing.
Using them can confuse readers, and as they say the same thing more than once, redundant words can require the reader to re-read something multiple times to understand it fully.
- In my opinion – in academic writing, everything is assumed to be your opinion which needs to be backed by proof. Replace this with “research shows,” or simply state your findings.
- The reason is because – reason makes because redundant, so just state your findings and give proof.
- Due to the fact that – this can be shortened to because or “due to” and follow it with your evidence.
- For all intents and purposes – this means “essentially” or something has the same result as something else and would be clearer to just state the result.
- Each and every – this is redundant because both “each” and “every” means the same thing and an absolute that would be almost impossible to prove. Stick to the facts and use data to support your argument.
- Absolutely essential – Absolute and redundant. Show how essential it is and back up your argument.
- Past history – Just say history which is understood to be in the past.
- Advance planning – Like history, the word planning is done before something happens.
- Repeat again – Repeat means to do something again. The word repeat is sufficient.
- End result – A result occurs at the end, so only “result” needs to be used
Filler Words
In conversation, filler words (also called discourse markers) are used to fill silence and to show that the speaker is pausing to think of what to say next. They serve an important purpose and help to keep people from speaking over each other.
Informal writing uses a more conversational tone and includes filler words to mimic natural dialogue.
Academic writing, however, is less of a conversation and more of a presentation, so it requires conciseness. They may lead to inserting cliches into your writing, which can further dilute your message. Filler words also remove the focus from your argument and bloat your word count.
By eliminating filler words, your essay is more likely to come across as professional, convey information directly, and demonstrate an understanding of a topic.
However, be careful when editing your essay to leave in important words that may appear to be filler words at first glance. Words like “however,” and “additionally” may be filler words in speech, but in text, they act as transitional words that allow the reader to move from one idea or topic to another.
While this isn’t an exhaustive list, frequently used filler words include:
- Just – This word adds hesitation to the rest of the sentence and can take away from your argument. Remove it and rephrase the sentence so it’s a strong, confident statement.
- Actually – Redundant and can come across as condescending in some instances, “actually” can be removed and phrased directly.
- Basically – This term simplifies ideas and explanations but tends to oversimplify things and is too informal for academic purposes. Instead of using “basically,” choose concise words to make your point.
- Literally – An absolute word that can be misused. This word can be used but only in appropriate situations where something is exactly the same. Otherwise, omit it and construct the sentence without it.
- Somewhat – Like “basically,” this word is uncertain and weakens the statement around it. Pick strong words that describe the impact the statement or fact has.
- Kind of – This phrase is informal and appears indecisive compared to a more direct statement. If a statement cannot be described in a definite way, use data to show the degree to which it’s true.
- Sort of – Similar to “kind of,” this phrase diminishes the statement, is vague, and is considered informal. Omit it and use data to express the degree.
- In order to – This phrase implies intention, but it’s a very wordy way to do so. It can be shortened to just “to” when implying a purpose.
- That – A common word often used to connect clauses. Check to see if “that” can be removed without affecting the meaning of the sentence. Often, you can move the word, and the sentence will read more smoothly.
The Impact of Word Choice in English Essay Writing
Your writing doesn’t have to suffer because you have to use academic and formal language. Although it is more formal and precise than informal language, your essays can still be interesting to write and to read. Formal language keeps your thoughts organized and concise.
