Graduate Studies
The Microbiology and Immunology Department is unique in that it offers it's Graduate students numerous opportunities to be recognized for their academic and research accomplishments through a series of prestigious awards. Apart from the Travel award, these awards are provided directly to the students on top of their regular stipends/scholarships. These awards all reward excellence pertaining to various aspects of the students' performance: Entrance awards based on entrance academic grades, the R.G.E. Murray award based on performance in the Graduate seminar series, Travel awards based on demonstrated scientific productivity that warrants presentation at conferences, and the Robinson, Thomas and Poland awards that each recognize comprehensive academic and scientific excellence at various stages of a Graduate student's career. Graduate students from the Microbiology and Immunology department can also compete for awards offered through the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and Western University.
All students are encouraged to apply for variety of scholarships. There are a variety of opportunities at various levels of competition. Details can be found on Western's Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies website under Student Finances and on the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry website .

The CIHR Doctoral Research Awards Program funds applications in any area of health research. Two streams of scholarships are administered through a single application: The Frederick Banting & Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral Awards (CGS-D) program provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada.
The Doctoral Foreign Study Awards (DFSA) program provides special recognition and support to students who are pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field abroad.

NSERC Doctoral Research Awards
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) offers two types of research training awards through one application: the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D) and the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral (PGS-D).

Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master's
The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships - Master’s Program (CGSM) is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships and Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science & Technology
The Graduate Studies Committee in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology will internally adjudicate applications for Ontario Graduate Scholarships and Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarships in Science & Technology . These scholarships will be awarded to doctoral and master’s students. Current and prospective students are eligible and are encouraged to apply. Master's and doctoral candidates will be adjudicated separately, and each application will be awarded points for each category in a competitive manner relative to your peers. Applications must be submitted to conform to the following criteria as described below. Please list your accomplishments in reverse chronological order.
Value: $15,000 for one year (3 consecutive terms)

Dr. FW Luney Graduate Entrance Scholarship in Microbiology & Immunology
This scholarship was established by Mrs. Marion Isabelle (Luney) Murray in honour of her father, Frederick Winnett Luney, a Pathologist and Western Professor. Marion Isabelle (Luney) Murray worked as a medical technologist in St. Joseph's Hospital Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Western Ontario. She was the chief technologist in the Clinical Bacteriology Service for Victoria Hospital and provided technical support to laboratory teaching for the students of medicine and science for many years. Marion died in London, Ontario in 2013 at age 94. Awarded annually to full-time Master’s or Doctoral students enrolling for the first time in the Microbiology & Immunology Graduate Program, based on early application (applied for the program before February 1), academic achievement (minimum 80% average) and research merit. Recipients will be selected annually by the Graduate Committee of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. At least one representative of the selection committee must hold membership in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

At least one representative of the selection committee must hold membership in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Application forms and supporting documentation must be submitted one week prior to travel in ordered to be considered for the award. Year X students are not eligible.

Madge and Charles Macklin Fellowship is available to full-time doctoral students in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry who have published their doctoral research as first author in a peer reviewed journal. This fellowship was established by a bequest from Margaret Macklin Frewen. Eligibility Full-time doctoral student registered in a Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry graduate program may apply. Dean's Research Scholarship
We are delighted to announce the introduction of the Dean’s Research Scholarship (DRS) for graduate students. This program is being initiated in order to support Western University and Schulich Medicine & Dentistry’s commitment to enhance collaborative and translational research. Starting the academic year 2020/21, a total of 10 awards per year to support graduate student research will be given. The scholarships will be in the amounts of $10,000 for Master’s students and $14,000 for PhD students per year, for two years.
