Ever since the invention of the e-reader, book-lovers everywhere have been debating which is better—the eBook or the traditional paper book. Can the prices of paper books compete with the low prices of eBooks? Does the convenience of eBooks compare with the feeling of a real book in your hands?

As an avid reader, I personally love both. There are lots of good reasons to prefer either one, but in the end, they both have their pros and cons.

If you're like me, the hardest part about packing , for any occasion, is choosing what books to bring. Your suitcase can only hold so many, and what if you finish those before your vacation is over? Or what if you get bored with them and wish you'd brought something else?

The best part about eBooks, by far, is that you never have to worry about these kinds of problems. With an e-reader, you can carry around thousands of books with you everywhere you go, all on a device that weighs less than a pound.

2. But you can't put eBooks on a shelf.

As a reader, my bookshelf is my pride and joy. One of the most satisfying things about finishing a book is being able to close the cover, slide it back into its place on the shelf, and admire it from time to time. With eBooks, you just don't get that satisfaction.

3. eBooks are easier on those with poor eyesight or reading disabilities.

However, eBooks have the advantage when it comes to ease of reading. The daily struggles of being a college commuter, it's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio..

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

You can't just go to your room to take a nap in the middle of your classes.

Some commuters are lucky enough to live only a few minutes from campus, but I live 50 minutes away so I've napped in some really strange places. There's one secret spot on campus that is my go to, but I can't give that one away just in case I need it this finals week.

Having to spend all your extra cash on gas for your car.

There is nothing I hate spending money on more than filling up my gas tank. I have a car with pretty decent gas mileage but it feels like I fill the tank more than once a week.

 Speaking of money, you probably don't have a meal plan so you're forced to scrounge up some change or mooch off of your friends.

I tried to buy some chips the other day for lunch and my connect card only had 14 cents on it; I dug through my wallet to find some change but that moment was pretty embarrassing. I hate begging for someone to swipe me into the dining hall, but my friends usually have too many meal swipes left anyway. They're saints.

It can be harder to maintain the friendships you make with people from class.

The moment you tell them you're a commuter, they make that "oh god I'm so sorry face" and you don't really see them much after that. I get it though, it's easier to be friends with people who are convenient as opposed to the ones who are either working, in class, or driving home when you want to hang out.

Finding a parking spot.

For one, the parking lot you need to parking in is probably full, so you're stuck waiting for someone to leave then following them slowly to their car to take their spot. It's extremely awkward and I hate it but it's absolutely necessary. For some reason, my school made up of 60 percent commuters decided to put the parking garage in east nowhere instead of the parking lot everyone uses the most. I get that it would have been difficult to build on that lot because there would be nowhere for commuters to park during construction but I'm still bitter about it.

It can be harder to be involved on campus because between your one, two, or three jobs and school you don't have much free time.

Someone's gotta pay for all that gas.

When you try to be super involved on campus, it can kill your sleep schedule.

I decided to join a sorority and there are some nights where by the time I've finished my 50 minute drive home I just collapse into bed and pass out with my regular clothes on. I'm super glad I joined because it keeps me on campus instead of just driving home after class but the exhaustion is real.

It's impossible to do homework at home, but staying on campus isn't an option sometimes.

I can't concentrate on anything at home so I usually do my homework while I'm on campus, but it would be nice to be able to walk from the library straight to your room.

There are surveys and events that you can't participate in because you're a commuter.

Every semester I get the same email from ResNet telling me "you can win a free iPad by taking this survey" but to qualify you have to be a resident. It's like danging a carrot in front of a horse's face.

 Group projects are the bane of your existence.

It's already difficult enough working around everyone's class schedule, but then you have to factor in the days you're actually on campus and available to do the project. By the end of it you're all just emailing one another and hoping for the best.

There is nothing worse than adding extra time to an already annoying commute.

Your backpack rivals that of a survivalist trekking in the woods.

You need everything for all of your classes because why would you want to walk all the way back to your car in east nowhere then back to civilization?

Driving all the way to campus to find a note on the door of your classroom saying class was cancelled.

No email, just pure and utter disregard for everyone and everything.

There are a lot of struggles commuter students face, but I wouldn't trade home-cooked food, my own bed, and snuggling with my cat every night for anything.

Things I Am Actually Going To Do This Semester

Or at least try to do..

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

With that being said it brings me to another thing I will actually (try) and do this semester.

2. I will look decent for class.

OK maybe not every single day, but at least twice a week, put effort into your appearance. I know that that pair of sweats and that baggy t-shirt stay calling your name; however, they need to understand that there are clothes in your closet that have not seen the light of day in months due to your inability to actually put on a decent looking outfit. Let your sweats know that you need to wear other clothes or before you know it your jeans will have somehow shrunk a size (yes it happens). It doesn't take too much effort to put on a nice outfit and who knows that adorable top in the back of your closet may catch the eye of a potential "bae."

3. I will go to the gym more.

After being home for a month or more and your family stuffing you with actual good food, a few pounds may have introduced themselves to you. When going back to school this is a time for you to cut them out of your life, you probably have not gotten that attached to them so now would be a good time to hike across campus to the gym and start getting that perfect body (spring break is coming up).

4. I will go to the library and study more.

See how I said "go to the library and study " and not "go to the library and sleep , watch Netflix , or do anything but study." Your grades are counting on you to lift them up when they are down and you can't do that when you try and cram for that big test the night before. This semester you are challenged to study not a few days before, but weeks before. This way you can actually learn and understand the material. It helps -- I promise.

5. I will meet new people.

Yes, your old friends are fun and you always have a good time with them, but it is never a bad thing to branch out and meet new people. Join a new club or talk to that random person who sits beside you in class, not only could you make a new friend you could have a new person to study with!

Now, go make some friends, get to class on time, look decent, and get your study on.

Paper Books and E-Books in the Modern Society

Introduction.

During the recent years, the opposition between paper books and e-books has become quite topical. Numerous people nowadays argue about whether it is more comfortable to use a printed book or a digital device for reading. Although an increasing number of people choose e-books over paper ones, printed editions remain in demand. Some people, conversely, prefer paper books to their digital analogues. Whereas paper books are less accessible and comfortable for transporting than electronic analogues, they outdo digital ones in a wide range of parameters: printed books are better for health and do not depend on electricity, they also create a magic atmosphere, help to concentrate while reading and are more comfortable in use for some students.

Advantages of Paper Books

About half a thousand years ago, educated people of the European society were stunned with the revolution in book production. The first printing-press appeared to cause the threat of replacement for hand-written books by printed ones. It seems that the similar revolution is happening nowadays, as printed books get replaced by e-books. However, this time changes may turn out to be less radical and unequivocal. Reading printed editions is not only better for health, it is also more pleasant and helps to concentrate on the plot. These are the reasons why paper books remain popular among readers and surpass digital sources in some parameters.

Better for Health

The most important argument for paper books is that they are less harmful to human health than e-books. It is believed that monitors have a bad influence on the eyesight, thus, reading digital books strongly strains the eyes. Reading a printed source does not have such a dangerous impact on human ocular organs, surely if there is enough light and the reader sits in the right position. Besides, researches show that “electronic documents are hard to follow by the eyes, and that sympathetic nervous activity is induced in association with the rise of fatigue related to eyes and reading” (Bando et al., 2017, p. 49). These results prove the statement that printed books are better for those who have problems with eyesight and those who want to avoid them.

The Unique Atmosphere

Another reason for choosing paper books over electronic ones may seem unimportant, but it is significant true for “bookworms-aesthetes”. According to the taste of this type of people, books that do not smell like printer’s ink or sound like crunchy paper are unpleasant to read. Tactile sensation of pages, their sound and the hypnotic monotonous activity of turning them – all these factors increase the amount of pleasure from reading a paper volume. E-books do not create this magical atmosphere, which makes the process of reading more automatic and less exciting.

Independence from Electricity

Moreover, paper books are less dependent upon such technical achievements as electricity, plugs, and charging devises. To read a paper book, one needs a book itself and some light from the sun, a candle, or a lamp. Although it is possible to read an e-book without any light, the devise itself has to be charged. Moreover, an owner of the e-book has to use the Internet to download books, while a paper book does not require it.

A Better Concentration

It is also believed that a person reading a paper book is more attentive and concentrated than the one reading an e-book. Printed volumes are thought to provide a deeper immersion in the subject and a stronger emotional connection with the content. There are several reasons that can explain this curious fact. First, reading a paper book requires a closer physical contact with the pages, which makes the reader involved in the subject as well. Second, if there are other apps on the device used for reading, it is possible that a reader will be distracted by scrolling through these apps instead of reading. Finally, a collection of read books standing on the bookshelf is a clear evidence of the progress, which can motivate to continue reading.

Better for Education

Last but not least, paper books, according to some researchers, are more useful and effective for the process of education. First, it is possible to use more than one paper book at a time, while a reader should have several electronic devices to use more than one digital book at the same moment. Second, it is easier to work with several different pages in one book when it is a paper volume. It may also be more comfortable to use bookmarks and to write down some notes in the printed edition because it makes them more material and real. According to the research by Omodani et al. (2018), students using paper sources were more likely to give right answers to the questions than students using e-books or tablets. These results prove that the information read in the paper book is more likely to be understood and remembered.

The Predominance of Printed Books

The reasons above justify the devotion of most people to paper books. People prefer printed editions as they consider them as better for health and more pleasant to read. Moreover, working with printed books is more comfortable and productive, which makes paper volumes popular among scientists, teachers, and students. According to the research by Pew Research Center (2019), about 37% of American readers use paper books only, compared to approximately 7% of respondents preferring e-books. The amount of people who use both printed and digital editions is growing because combining these alternatives allows to benefit from both of them.

Advantages of E-books

E-books, similar to paper books, have their advantages that make them comfortable for some people. The most evident benefit of digital sources is their accessibility, which makes it easy to read any book without leaving the house. Moreover, one electronic devise is more portable than a stack of voluminous and heavy books. These benefits are important for some situations and make e-books a worthy adversary for the printed ones. However, e-books have a wide range of disadvantages, the most significant among which are eye strain, reduction of concentration and productivity, distracting factors, and some discomfort while using more than one book at a time. Contrarily, paper books may be uneasy to access and heavy to transport, but they do less harm to the eyesight, facilitate concentration and increase the amount of pleasure from reading.

Paper books have proved themselves as a reliable source of education and entertainment. People have been using them for centuries to share knowledge, spend some spare time, and create art. Although nowadays we have other information medium to use apart from paper, printed editions do not become useless or unnecessary. They provide people with information in a comfortable, healthy, and pleasant way. Paper books shall continue staying high in demand and frequently used, as they have a wide range of advantages. The tradition of reading printed volumes shall persist in the future to open this magical process of reading paper books to future generations.
