A1. Choose two sentences that appropriately mention the theme of the passage :
(1) The extract deals with the writer’s concern over Chaitanya's handicap. (2) The extract depicts the writer’s proud feelings towards her son’s achievement. (3) The extract deals with how Chaitanya made the writer see positively towards life. (4) The extract deals with how the writer helps Chaitanya to buy the bus ticket.
Early in 1997-98, when he returned from state-level inter-school sports, he had two prizes to his credit and a silver medal. He had won his laurels in athletic events and the silver medal in a running race. When I saw the prizes and read the citation Chaitanya had received, I was stupefied, in total disbelief, then–hugged him, kissed him and cried unabashedly to my heart’s content. That day, I cried for the first time out of joy and a sense of being vindicated. Without practice, he had competed with approximately 1,800 children drawn from various schools all over the state. He was subsequently selected for the marathon race, but he could not participate due to a health problem. “Maybe next year, he would”, I assured myself. And I, as his proud mother, would proudly chronicle his future achievements and success to inspire other - mothers of the world. Looking back at my own life, I feel that it is the spirit with which we can accept our life gracefully is what matters ultimately; and it is love that nourishes us. All other things are unimportant. Chaitanya has made me look inwards. His handicap doesn’t disturb me any longer. He and I shall live with it and still be happy. The mental strength which he has given to me is inexhaustible. One day, as both of us got onto a public transport bus, Chaitanya offered to buy the tickets for us. “One full, one half ”, he said to the conductor beaming with joy. Looking at him, I wondered whether he was really only a half? An incomplete person? Was I really full? Complete in all respects? Why do then normal people feel that they are ‘full’ and others like Chaitanya are ‘half’ or incomplete? Chaitanya’s world is complete in itself, pure and innocent while our lives are full of deceit, jealousies, ill-feelings.

According to some experts, a staggering 93 percent of our daily communication is non-verbal. Facial expressions are easy to decipher. One can readily detect happiness, sadness, anger. Physicians can tell a patient is doing well (or not) by looking at his/her face. Eye contact is another type of non-verbal communication, which can tell a lot about the other person. The eyes convey a range of emotions-happiness, sadness, boredom, surprise, confidence ..... even emotional interest. Staring at someone's forehead may intimidate the recipient, staring at the mouth is sometimes interpretated as a sign of emotional interest. In fact staring into someone's eyes is a sign of lying, and so is looking away. In certain cultures, lack of eye contact is taken as a sign of respect. If body language is to be defined, it is a combination of facial expression, gestures, eye contact, body movements and posture and voice. Frequent blinking is a sign of the person feeling distressed or uncomfortable. If the pupils are dilated, it often indicates interest, even emotional interest. The lips also reflect our body language, and lip biting indicates worry and/or anxiety; tightening of the lips may be an indication of disapproval. Slightly turned-up lips indicate happiness and slightly turned-down lips indicate sadness. |

(1) | “Can I see the Manager?” I said, and added solemnly, “Alone.” I don't know why I said “Alone.” “Certainly,” said the accountant and fetched him.
(2) | The Manager was a grave, calm man. I held my fifty-six dollars clutched in a crumpled ball in my pocket. “Are you the Manager?” I asked. God knows I did not doubt it. “Yes,” he said. “Can I see you …. alone?” I asked. | 5 |
(3) | The Manager looked at me in some alarm. He felt that I had an awful secret to reveal. “Come in here,” he said, and led the way to a private room. He turned the key in the lock. “We are safe from interruption here,” he said; “Sit down.” We both sat down and looked at each other. I found no voice to speak. “You are one of Pinkerton’s men, I presume,” he said. | 10 |
(4) | He had gathered from my mysterious manner that I was a detective. I knew what he was thinking, and it made me worse. | 15

(5) | The Manager got up and opened the door. He called to the accountant. “Mr. Montgomery,” he said unkindly loud, “this gentleman is opening an account, he will deposit fifty-six dollars. Good morning.” I rose. A big iron door stood open at the side of the room. “Good morning,” I said, and stepped into the safe. “Come out,” said the Manager coldly and showed me the other way. | 30 |
(6) | I went up to the accountant’s wicket and poked the ball of money at him with a quick convulsive movement as if I were doing a conjuring trick. My face was ghastly pale. “Here,” I said, “deposit it.” The tone of the words seemed to mean, “Let us do this painful thing while the fit is on us.” He took the money and gave it to another clerk. | 35 |
(7) | He made me write the sum on a slip and sign my name in a book. I no longer knew what I was doing. The bank swam before my eyes. “Is it deposited?” I asked in a hollow, vibrating voice. “It is,” said the accountant. “Then I want to draw a cheque.” My idea was to draw out six dollars of it for present use. Someone gave me a chequebook through a wicket and someone else began telling me how to write it out. The people in the bank had the impression that I was an invalid millionaire. I wrote something on the cheque and thrust it in at the clerk. He looked at it. | 40

(8) | “What! Are you drawing it all out again?” he asked in surprise. Then I realised that I had written fifty-six instead of six. I was too far gone to reason now. I had a feeling that it was impossible to explain the thing. I had burned my boats. All the clerks had stopped writing to look at me. Reckless with misery, I made a plunge. “Yes, the whole thing.” “You withdraw all your money from the bank?” “Every cent of it.” “Are you not going to deposit anymore?” said the clerk, astonished. “Never.” |
50
55 |
(9) | An idiot hope struck me that they might think something had insulted me while I was writing the cheque and that I had changed my mind. I made a wretched attempt to look like a man with a fearfully quick temper.
(10) | The clerk prepared to pay the money. “How will you have it?” he said. This question came as a bolt from the blue. “What?” “How will you have it?” “Oh!”— I caught his meaning and answered without even trying to think— “in fifties.” He gave me a fifty-dollar bill. “And the six?” he asked dryly. “In sixes,” I said. He gave it to me and I rushed out. As the big door swung behind me. I caught the echo of a roar of laughter that went up to the ceiling of the bank. Since then, I bank no more. I keep my money in cash in my trousers pocket and my savings in silver dollars in a sock. | 60

My Financial Career By Stephen Leacock |
Students are often asked to write a paragraph on Journey By Boat in their schools. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 200-word, and 250-word paragraphs on the topic.
Let’s take a look…
A journey by boat is fun. You sit in a small boat and float on water. The boat moves with the help of oars, which are long sticks that push against the water. Sometimes, the wind helps to move the boat too. You can see fish swimming and ducks flying low over the water. The sun shines on the waves, making them sparkle like tiny stars. The water makes soft splashing sounds. It feels peaceful and exciting at the same time. Riding in a boat is like a little adventure where you can see new things and feel the cool breeze on your face.
A journey by boat can be a very exciting adventure. Imagine you’re sitting in a small boat that gently rocks on a river’s calm waters. The sun is shining, and there’s a soft breeze that makes the leaves on the trees dance. As the boat moves, you can see many things around you. There are birds flying above and fish swimming below. Sometimes, you might even spot a duck with her ducklings floating by. The water makes quiet splashing sounds against the boat, and it feels peaceful. You can also see different kinds of plants by the riverbank, and sometimes people waving as you pass by their houses. The boatman might have a long stick to push the boat forward, and it’s fun to watch how he moves the boat so smoothly. You can help him by being a good passenger: sitting still and wearing a life jacket to stay safe. If you bring some snacks and a drink, it’s like having a picnic on the water! Just remember to keep the river clean and not throw anything into it. A boat journey can be a lovely way to spend a day, discover nature, and have a little bit of fun gliding on the water.
A journey by boat is an adventure that feels like a peaceful break from the busy life on land. Imagine sitting in a small boat as it gently floats on the water. The soft ripples splash against the side of the boat with a calming sound. The sky above is vast and blue, with clouds that look like fluffy cotton. All around you, water stretches out as far as you can see, sparkling under the sun like a sea of diamonds. Sometimes, you might pass by green trees and bushes that grow close to the water’s edge, and you can hear birds singing and see them flying above you. If you are with friends or family, you can chat and laugh together, enjoying the fresh air and the beautiful views. If you’re alone, the quiet of the water can make you feel calm and happy, giving you time to think and relax. Fish might swim near your boat, curious about the visitor in their home. The boat ride is not just fun; it also lets you see the world from a different view. It’s slower than a car or a bike, so you have more time to look at everything and take in the beauty of nature. When the boat ride ends, you step back onto land feeling refreshed and full of memories about the lovely time you spent gliding over the water. A boat journey is a simple pleasure that can make you feel joyful and peaceful inside.
That’s it! I hope the paragraphs have helped you.

Composition: A Journey by Boat
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the tranquil waters, I embarked on a journey by boat that would forever etch itself into my memory. With eager anticipation and a sense of adventure coursing through my veins, I boarded the vessel, ready to explore the vast expanse of the open sea.
The boat gently rocked as it set sail, leaving the safety of the harbor behind and venturing out into the great unknown. As we ventured further from the shore, the sounds of the city faded into the distance, replaced by the rhythmic lapping of waves against the hull and the cry of seabirds soaring overhead.
As we sailed along the coastline, I was captivated by the sheer beauty of the landscape unfolding before me. Towering cliffs rose majestically from the water, their rugged contours carved by centuries of wind and wave. Secluded coves beckoned invitingly, their sandy shores bathed in the soft light of the setting sun.
As night fell, the sky was ablaze with stars, their twinkling lights mirrored in the dark waters below. The only sound was the gentle whisper of the wind and the occasional splash of a fish breaking the surface. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a chance to lose myself in the timeless beauty of the natural world.
As dawn broke, painting the sky with hues of pink and gold, we continued our journey, venturing further into the unknown. With each passing mile, I felt a sense of exhilaration and wonder, as if each wave carried with it the promise of adventure and discovery.
And so, as the journey drew to a close and we returned to the safety of the harbor, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness at the thought of leaving this magical world behind. But as I stepped ashore, I knew that the memories of this journey would stay with me forever, a testament to the enduring power of the sea and the timeless allure of a journey by boat.

A journey by boat is a captivating experience that allows one to connect intimately with nature while enjoying the tranquility of water travel. As the boat gently glides over the water, each moment becomes a blend of adventure and serenity. The rhythmic sound of waves lapping against the hull creates a soothing ambiance, making it easy to relax and take in the surroundings.

Write a short essay on your own journey in a boat.
Journey in a boat
Children love to play in the water. There is no end to their excitement when they know that they are going to travel by boat. I, too was excited when I came to know that I would be travelling in a boat. I had never travelled in a boat.
Our family had gone to Mahableshwar for a short holiday. I overheard my father saying that we were going to hire a boat for the whole day. I was so excited. I behaved my best. As decided we were given a boat along with a boatman in case we had some trouble. The boat was not a huge one but spacious enough for our family. My father started rowing the boat with the help of the oars. I watched him and wanted to row the boat too. My father was a little scared when I told him what I wanted.
He told me it was not easy. I was unhappy and sat quietly. The boatman suggested to my father to allow me to row the boat. He promised my father that nothing scary would happen. My father reluctantly agreed. I took the oars in my hands and began rowing the boat. The boatman was guiding me all the time. I rowed the boat for some time and then handed the oars to my father. Rowing is fun but also difficult.
I felt great to have rowed the boat. We ate and had a lot of fun on the boat. I also threw bread crumbs into the water. Through the clear water, I could see fishes eat them up quickly. How the day passed was a mystery to me. I can truly say that I enjoyed the boat ride. Travelling by boat was a wonderful experience.

I have been extremely fond of travelling ever since I was a little kid. I have travelled on buses, in cars, on trains, on airplanes, on the horse and even hitchhiked my way to places. What I hadn’t done so far is experiencing a journey in a boat.
Boats have been an object of fascination for me for quite some time. Subconsciously, I would often revert to painting boats on the vast open sea. Alone and steadily drifting. Sometimes they would be small fishermen boats floating idly under the shining sun. A peculiar hobby for a teenager and yet the fascination was never outgrown.
It just so happened that a friend of mine chose my birthday last summer as the perfect occasion to surprise me with a boat trip. Her cousin owned a sailboat which he used to sail during his vacations. She was a great white beauty named Dahlia.
Anyway, so my friend succeeded in her surprise. I was overjoyed and excited to experience my first boat journey. We picked a suitable weekend to take time off and pack our things for the trip. We took a necessary change of clothes, food stock, first aid and lifesavers. The destination was planned to be an island a few miles into the ocean where a private company had opened a relaxation resort. We were able to book rooms at it for our two-night stay. The journey itself was a four-hour drive. Two if you accelerated but I intended to drift as slowly as we could.
It was a sunny day when we took off. The fluffy clouds floated above us lazily. Halfway into our journey, my friend convinced the captain to anchor in the middle. It was a glorious experience. Cool winds blew from all sides, the gentle waves crashing in muffled sounds against the boat. We spotted fishes swimming nearby and made guesses to which type of fish they were. We even heard Skylarks sing in the distance. I felt like I had stepped into my painting. All my senses were alert and soaking at that moment. It felt like a wonderful moment to be alive. That journey in a boat is my most treasured experience.

A Journey by Boat
A journey by boat is always very pleasurable and enjoyable because it has an attraction of its own. Rowing a boat provides a lot of fun. Last summer I had an opportunity to go to New Zealand with my family for about a week. We stayed in a hotel, v, filch was within walking distance from the sea.
During our stay, we visited many beautiful places in different cities of New Zealand. On the third day, my father hired a boat for a few hours. Although the boat was quite roomy, it was not very big. With great excitement, my parents, uncle, sister, younger brother and myself, got into the boat. It was late evening. The sun had just gone below the horizon.
The scenery was very beautiful. The sky looked amazing. There were not many boats in the sea. I wanted to row the boat but my father did not allow me. The boatman supported me and came to my help. He assured that he would take care that I did not cause any harm to the boat or to myself. In the end, my father agreed.
I sat in the place of the boatman and had a delightful experience of rowing for almost twenty minutes. Imagine my thrill and pride when I was able to row the boat and keep it on its path. Of course, its speed was reduced.
Soon the sky was sparkling bright with the moon light. The dark outline of tall coconut trees on the shore seen against the dark background made everything more beautiful. The lights of the nearby huts and of the bridge threw beams of silver reflection in the sea. The sky was studded with twinkling stars. The view was remarkably stunning.
Time flew very fast and our journey was about to come to an ended. The boatman brought us back to the shore. We enjoyed every single minute of the boat ride. It was wonderful. My parents were pleased to see all of us smiling and happy. I am grateful to God for letting me such wonderful opportunity. Even after so many days, its memory makes me feel happy.
