Reflective Journal as assignment
These materials were developed for the course Integrative Seminar 4: Societal Challenges (3803ISQPVY), an interdisciplinary 4 weeks course at the PPLE college (UvA). The course was taken by 183 2 nd year students, and taught by 12 tutors. One of the prime learning outcomes of the course was formulated as "The student is able to reflect on his or her own biases and assumptions". In relation to this learning goal, assessment was decided to stress reflective writing as prime means of training this skill. As appropriate formal Reflective Journal was chosen.

This study assessed the benefits of keeping reflective journal writing on improving English writing skills, increasing motivation, enhancing creativity, and critical thinking among university students. It also explored differences in students' performance and attitudes due to gender, and some writing practices. The sample consisted of 120 male and female students from four sections of an undergraduate writing course. A 19-item questionnaire was distributed and the items were structured according to three dimensions: improving learning, motivation and self confidence, and value and convenience. The results of the study indicated the positive effects of the use of reflective journal writing in enhancing motivation and self-confidence and improving learning in general and the writing skills in particular. The results also indicated that female students favored reflective journal writing more than male students. Furthermore, students who voluntarily wrote their own * "It is generally believed that the thinking process involves two aspects: reflective thinking and critical thinking. They are not separate processes; rather, they are closely connected" (Brookfield 1987).
This paper considers the efficacy of using reflective learning journals to encourage critical thinking, both for English speaking background (ESB) and non-English speaking background (NESB) students. The paper is a preliminary study into 122 journals based on qualitative research into some 750 learning journals completed over the past seven years for the first year Faculty of Economics and Business unit of study 'Communication and Critical Analysis'. This course centred on critical analysis from the perspective of history and philosophy of science and the language used to express such analysis in English. It was found that there was some difference in the level of reflection between the ESB and NESB groups but no definitive conclusions could be drawn from this because of the skewness of the sample. However, reflective journals were found to be a useful learning and assessment tool when students had sufficient motivation.

As a part of their pre-service for the four year teacher-training programme, my students in college are required to engage in practice teaching for four months in their fourth year. The final year is quite demanding for them as they prepare themselves as interns for their first teaching assignment. The preparation includes making weekly lesson plans, writing journals and doing two projects, along with attending classes for three theory papers. While all of this is an essential requirement of the programme, it also is a great opportunity for them to learn and grow personally and professionally. As they engage with elementary school children, they begin to weave valuable and meaningful threads of learning experiences, insights and perspectives
Varieties of Qualitative Research Methods, 2023
The roots of reflective journaling as a formal method of inquiry are often attributed to Dewey's (1933), and later Schön's (1983), writings on reflective practice-the idea of intentional, structured reflection as a tool for improving one's practice, for educators (primarily) and other professions (e.g., nursing, social work). While Dewey's emphasis was on pedagogy and professional development, Schön described reflective practice as knowledge acquisition in itself; he rejected the dichotomy between researcher and practitioner, and suggesting, instead, a cyclical process of doing-reflecting-learning. The use of reflective practice (generally) and journaling (specifically) have since become commonplace in many forms of qualitative research, both as a supplement to the research process and as a stand-alone method of inquiry. The increasing mainstream acceptance of reflective journaling as research has, in large part, grown in tandem with recognition of the importance of students' and teachers' social-emotional well-being. Of course, these ideas-attention to holistic development, reflection as knowledge creation-are prominent themes in many ancient religious and spiritual traditions including Buddhism (Tremmel, 1993) and various Indigenous traditions (Kovach, 2009). So, while their incorporation in modern, mainstream, Western research and education is typically thought of as fairly new, they have indeed existed as knowledge cultivation strategies for millennia.

We present GERMLINE, a robust algorithm for identifying segmental sharing indicative of recent common ancestry between pairs of individuals. Unlike methods with comparable objectives, GERMLINE scales linearly with the number of samples, enabling analysis of whole-genome data in large cohorts. Our approach is based on a dictionary of haplotypes that is used to efficiently discover short exact matches between individuals. We then expand these matches using dynamic programming to identify long, nearly identical segmental sharing that is indicative of relatedness. We use GERMLINE to comprehensively survey hidden relatedness both in the HapMap as well as in a densely typed island population of 3000 individuals. We verify that GERMLINE is in concordance with other methods when they can process the data, and also facilitates analysis of larger scale studies. We bolster these results by demonstrating novel applications of precise analysis of hidden relatedness for (1) identification and resolution of phasing errors and (2) exposing polymorphic deletions that are otherwise challenging to detect. This finding is supported by concordance of detected deletions with other evidence from independent databases and statistical analyses of fluorescence intensity not used by GERMLINE.

experience is the key to critical reflection How do I "critically reflect" on a topic for my assignment?
