Art’s significance in society frequently surfaces in IELTS Writing Task 2, urging test-takers to analyze and articulate its multifaceted value. This essay delves into this theme, providing a sample answer, vocabulary insights, and writing tips to help you excel in your IELTS journey.

Sample IELTS Essay Question

Some people believe that art plays a crucial role in a society’s development, while others think it is merely a form of entertainment. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Essay Analysis

This question presents a classic “discuss both views” structure. It requires you to:

  • Acknowledge both perspectives: Explore the arguments for art’s role in societal development and its function as entertainment.
  • Present your opinion: Clearly state your stance on the matter.
  • Support your arguments: Provide logical reasoning and relevant examples to back your claims.

Model Essay

Art, throughout history, has been intricately interwoven with the fabric of societies worldwide. While some consider it a mere source of amusement, others argue for its profound impact on societal progress. This essay will delve into both perspectives before presenting my own viewpoint.

Proponents of art’s entertainment value posit that its primary function is to provide enjoyment and escapism. Music, films, paintings, and other art forms offer individuals a respite from daily routines and anxieties. This perspective argues that art acts as a stress reliever, fostering mental well-being and offering a platform for emotional release. For instance, listening to soothing music or watching a lighthearted comedy can significantly elevate one’s mood.

However, to confine art to entertainment alone would be a gross oversimplification of its potential. Art possesses the unique ability to inspire critical thinking, challenge societal norms, and ignite social change. Through powerful imagery, evocative language, and thought-provoking narratives, artists can raise awareness about pressing issues, spark dialogue, and ultimately contribute to a more just and equitable society. The works of renowned artists like Banksy and Ai Weiwei exemplify this power, using their platforms to critique political systems and advocate for human rights.

In my view, art transcends the realm of mere entertainment; it serves as a powerful catalyst for societal advancement. While its ability to entertain and provide enjoyment is undeniable, its capacity to educate, inspire, and provoke change cements its significance in shaping a more progressive and enlightened world.

Writing Tips

  • Balanced Approach: Ensure you dedicate sufficient space to discuss both sides of the argument before presenting your opinion.
  • Exemplification: Use relevant and relatable examples to illustrate your points effectively.
  • Clear Structure: Follow a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
  • Vocabulary Enhancement: Incorporate diverse vocabulary related to art, society, and development.

Vocabulary Focus

  • Intricately interwoven: Closely connected and intertwined.
  • Multifaceted value: Having many different aspects of importance.
  • Proponents: Supporters or advocates of a particular viewpoint.
  • Escapism: Seeking distraction from reality, often through entertainment.
  • Gross oversimplification: An overly simplistic explanation that ignores complexities.

Everyone is more creative thanks to art, both in their academic and professional lives. Students will begin developing unique products that appeal to consumers and the market. They might take part in scientific and art exhibitions to gain recognition on a national and international level. The generation will become well-known scientists, philosophers, artists and writers in the future. It ought to be promoted on all fronts. The ability to communicate through words does not define art. Even a school student with the smallest amount of linguistic ability can express thoughts through many artistic mediums. Without speech, hearing, or other physical abilities, people with disabilities can still convey their creative ideas and opinions via art. Art is therefore accessible everywhere. It lacks both physical and mental limitations. Art is the deaf people's language of expression. It can be depicted through writing, sketching, painting, and other artistic mediums. Since art is a result of creativity, it greatly enhances the value of every commodity on the market. Also, art and culture are the modes of attraction for tourists.

Every student should be able to study thanks to the development of the curriculum from KG to PG. Learn many artistic disciplines and produce innovative works in addition to their subjects. Even sluggish learners can readily understand any subject when it is explained in an artistic style. Additionally, it aids in the emotional and creative expression of the children. Students without art will become less original and repetitive. A creative approach to instruction is more appealing to most students than a formal, academic approach.

At all educational levels, in industrial facilities, and in jobs, art should be an integral element of the curriculum. Without art, no country can become more valuable. Without culture and the arts, no country can prosper.

Band 8.5 IELTS Essay

It is the era of science and technology. But, still, it needs art to beautify itself. Art has been playing a prominent role in all ages. It molds the lives of children and elders alike. There is no culture and tradition without some form of art. From childhood, children should be taught different art forms to enrich their minds and lives with color and culture. A person with many subjects and professions without art is a tasteless person with a monotonous life.

All educational institutions, boards and universities should introduce art into their curriculum. Students should be made to learn the art from their childhood itself. It is a means to express one's feelings, ideas, and thoughts. It is the best method to give a physical form to a person's imagination. All kinds of students can express their inbuilt creativity through art. It is the best way for handicapped persons to give a physical form to their hidden expressions. Art is not only a way of living a life, but also a means of economic development. A person without any job, especially a housewife, can earn money through their creative products.

It is the responsibility of both teachers and parents to encourage children to indulge in learning and improving certain art forms. Academic subjects give you knowledge, but art gives you a great value addition to your qualification. It sharpens a person’s mental status and improves physical capabilities. A student with less memory power and the habit of byhearting can learn an art form very easily. Such students should be motivated in that direction. It will also impart interest in learning other subjects and keeps students away from the boredom of teaching. Art is very important to lessen anxiety, stress, and another form of depression. It is to be concluded that art is as important as academic subjects. It is also to be made an integral part of every subject or at least every curriculum. Art can only beautify the culture of a society.

Band 9 IELTS Essay

Art is the form with which a caste, creed, region, and entire society are identified and recognised. Without the fabric of art, all cultures and traditions are vogues. Even science and technology of the modern era becomes tasteless and unacceptable without infusing art into it. It is always suggested to include one or the other form of art in a student's curriculum.

A student can become complete with art besides other subjects. A man with knowledge, but without creativity is worthless. The basis for any creative product is some kind of art. It is much for any student to learn some art form since the school days itself. Creative people are always successful both in education and careers. Excessive emphasis on routine subjects and no preference for art forms produce students and citizens without value addition to their nation. No one product in the market can be promoted and sold like hot cake without adorning it with some creative features. We have to develop such a sense of creativity from childhood itself. All children are born with some inherent talents. All have their own interests and tastes. A product of peculiar interest and taste is an idea. That idea can be put into a physical form through some artistic skill. So, it is compulsory for every parent and teacher to motivate and encourage students toward some art. Genius cannot be identified and recognised without expressing it in some artistic form. Some drawing, painting, design, or sketch is required to put forth his feelings, expressions, and ideas in front of the public. Art creates an invaluable intellectual property for the nation. Many times a nation's economic status is tied to the number of artistic persons it has. In the market economy competition is tremendous. We can't compete with international products without creativity, science and technology.

So, our educational institutions and parents together encourage different art forms. To improve the value of individuals and also that of the entire society and its culture.

Art is an essential part of cultural heritage. Therefore, all over the world, art is an important element of cultures. However, nowadays few people are interested in art. In fact, most people lean towards subjects like science, technology, and business. The main reason for this is the money earned after studying these subjects as they offer better job prospects. However, this situation can be dealt with if the authorities take a number of measures together with the general public. [ieltsxpress]

People are losing interest in art because they don’t see it as a practical subject. In other words, studying art may not help them get a good job at a multinational company. Many artists struggle to make a living compared to those in the business and technology sectors. Focusing on subjects other than art is considered the gateway to success. For example, a recent poll by Times Magazine found that many science graduates are offered more job offers than art graduates.

However, art is the foundation of our culture. Lack of interest in art will eventually lead to the death of a rich cultural heritage throughout the world. The government can help revive younger generations’ interest in the arts. The authorities should allocate funds for the development of the art sphere through the construction of art schools and the maintenance of art galleries. The organization of cultural events will create jobs for many and attract many tourists. Increasing the number of tourists will help increase income. Better financial prospects will serve as an incentive for people to pursue art as a passion and career option. IELTSXpress.com

In conclusion, subjects such as science, technology, and business are lucrative in terms of job prospects, but the arts can also be a source of livelihood. For the survival of art, the joint efforts of the state and the people are necessary.
