Eng 123: electric vehicles and climate change, abagail smyser, innarea guy, october 14, 2023, when it comes to the future of the automotive business, there are many uncertainties., with the growing efforts to fight climate change, government officials across the globe are, looking for greener alternatives. one of many alternatives is the implementation of electric-, powered transportation, more commonly known as an electric vehicle (ev). electric vehicles, are known for their smaller carbon footprint and being more eco-friendly. unfortunately, the, solution to convert to electric transportation may not be as eco-friendly and simple as many are, left to believe. the processes that go into making an electric vehicle battery are far from clean, and are known for being detrimental to the environment. furthermore, due to the costly, measures that would have to be taken to make electric vehicles widely used and their economic, effects, it isn’t a straightforward solution. although electric vehicles are a great step towards the, fight against climate change, they aren’t as viable as people may believe due to extensive, environmental damage, effects on our economy, and costly changes to our infrastructure that are, due to the push to make electric vehicles the “new normal” many are left to believe that, they are the best solution to handling climate control. karaim (2021) points out how urgent the, need to work towards cleaner energy with the rise of global warming and its effects that are seen, worldwide (clean energy transition). karaim (2021) explains how in 2021 alone, the united, states faced devastating wildfires alongside seven hurricanes that were all linked to climate change, (para. 1). with the increasingly dangerous weather, governments worldwide are looking towards, cleaner energy solutions. lakshmi (2023) provides an example of one of the benefits of electric, vehicles is that they emit a lower carbon footprint (the environmental impact of battery, production for electric vehicles). in this chart located below paragraph seven, it shows that, emissions till 2030 and won’t be able to achieve zero net emissions till approximately 2060 (para., 10). this is due to roughly 60% of china’s power coming from coal-fired power plants so, although there are four million charging stations across china, their emissions likely won’t lower, due to plans to increase their coal power usage (para. 14). outside of the need to lower our, emission rates worldwide and the implications that come with it, the mining of lithium has been, proven to be dangerous as it pollutes water and is wasteful since there is no efficient way to recycle, batteries. lakshmi (2023) addresses that through the process of mining, toxic fumes are released, (the environmental impact of battery production for electric vehicles). one example of the, impacts of the mining process comes out of tibet where back in 2016, locals of the town tagong, took to the streets to protest the process of mining lithium. during this protest, locals dumped, hundreds of dead fish sourced from the liqui river that had died from toxic leaks into the water, caused by nearby mining. similarly, a study on the jin river’s water in yichun china halted, lithium production due to toxins in the water (para. 6). another similar example of the impacts of, lithium extraction is shown through the production of batteries for electric vehicles. research, shows that it takes approximately two million tons of water to make a measly one hundred car, batteries. to make matters worse, in chile roughly 65% of the country's water is depleted due to, lithium extraction (para. 8). furthermore, satellite analysis has been used to survey the damages, from nickel and cobalt extraction in cuba and found that one thousand and four hundred acres of, land were diminished of life. due to these same processes, twenty-three mines were shut down in, the philippines. for what is more, when batteries are no longer in use, all but five percent of, batteries are recycled which continues to add to the environmental footprint since the technology to, recycle these batteries is still inefficient (para. 9). these processes of mining are detrimental to our, ecosystems, have great environmental impacts, and are proven to be dangerous to nearby towns, due to water pollution., besides the environmental impacts that ev production has, the push for electric, transportation will greatly affect economies worldwide. with china being a leading source of, green energy resources, it has only strengthened china’s power, states demarco (2022, geopolitics, of green energy). this growth of power has left many governments worldwide to worry about, china using its green energy market for geopolitical leverage (para. 6). stub (2021) states that in, recent years the united states has become a world leader in the natural gas industry (the natural, gas industry, para. 5). aside from becoming a world leader in gas exportation, the natural gas, industry plays a huge part in the global economy (para. 10). stub (2021) adds that gas is the fuel, of choice used when solar or wind energy cannot be produced due to weather conditions and, because current backup reserves for renewable energy aren’t great (para. 11). outside of the, importance of natural gas to the united states and world economy, the job market will be affected., korte (2023) advised that since there is less work to be done on evs, it is predicted to starve out, jobs in the mechanic industry (the future of the auto industry is electric, para. 4). she further, explains that since 2014, california has seen a thirteen percent drop in independently licensed, mechanic shops (para. 5). in korte’s (2023) article she states that many mechanics are unwilling to, retool their toolboxes and be retrained to learn how to fix a car that requires computer, programming knowledge., delving deeper into the topic of electric vehicles shows that our infrastructure as we know, it would need to be completely reworked to be able to handle the addition of electric vehicles at, every home on a block. with our current infrastructure being established for a system that runs off, fossil fuels, it’s a growing concern that will put a major strain on workers and power grids., vehicle craze, there could be a lot of issues with the ability to charge your vehicle and could, upset a lot of people (para. 12)., ultimately, it is up to consumers and government officials to decide whether these drastic, changes are worth the costs. even though electric vehicles are a great step towards the fight, against climate change, they leave a lot of room for uncertainties. as demonstrated, their extensive, environmental damage is just one of the disastrous outcomes of the production of electric vehicles., beyond that, the economic and infrastructure roadblocks are a massive cost that will have to take, place to implement these changes. overall, due to the environmental damage, effects on our, economy, and the differences in infrastructure that are needed it’s up to the people to decide, whether these costs
