Let’s say you want to watch “Adipurush,” a new Indian mythological action-fantasy, without thinking so much about what came before it. You want to enter the theater with as little baggage as possible, despite the associations that come with the marquee-topping Prabhas, star of both S.S. Rajamouli’s trend-setting “Baahubali” period action fantasies. Maybe you want to see a great adaptation of The Ramayana , or the most commonly adapted parts of that Sanskrit language epic poem, where the arrow-slinging god Raghava, also known as Ram (Prabhas), rescues his kidnapped wife Sita, or Janaki ( Kriti Sanon ) from the evil multi-headed god Lankesh/Ravana (Saif Ali Khan ).

“Adipurush” just opened here in America, but it’s already controversial in India, where the writers of trend pieces, interviews, and reviews consider the implications of Lankesh’s appearance , including his weird nu-metal gel-spiked haircut , which has led to some comparisons to the Muslim leader Alauddin Khilji. Sanon’s casting as Sita has also led to outrage and,  unfortunately, effective demands for censorship . ( Some outspoken protesters don’t like that Sanon, the actress playing Sita, “India’s Daughter,” has danced suggestively in earlier movies.)

Is it possible to see, let alone enjoy, such an archetypal story without making too many distracting comparisons, either to other movies or real-life politics? Or are those associations simultaneously the biggest draw and problem for “Adipurush,” whose Sanskrit title can be read as “ First Man ,” and whose considerable budget (Rs 500 crore, or about $67 million) allegedly surpasses all prior Indian mega-productions? Honestly, the movie’s rough computer graphics might eclipse all other considerations since there’s so much bad green-screen image-compositing in “Adipurush,” and it all looks cheap and uninspired.

Your mileage may vary, but slapdash and tacky-looking special effects make the first hour (or more) of “Adipurush” feel interminable. Here in Manhattan’s Union Square theater, at a packed Thursday afternoon matinee, the raucous screams of Prabhas’ fans soon faded after his triumphant first scene, when Raghava almost single-handedly dispatches a horde of demonic wraiths. It took a moment to hear the auditorium’s silence beneath the movie’s typically bombastic soundtrack, but it was eventually glaring. “Adipurush” has been pre-sold to viewers based on what they already know: how can you go wrong by adapting a popular epic featuring superheroic Hindu gods, uncanny valley animal-people, and monstrous villains? Well, have you seen any good Marvel movies lately?

Recent complaints from frustrated employees of Marvel’s visual effects studios make it easier to understand why an SFX-driven event title like “Adipurush” could cost so much and still look so bad. It’s harder to understand how the makers of this movie could be satisfied with key establishing scenes, like when Janaki swoons as she and Raghava are romantically encircled by a flock of poorly-rendered pink flamingos.

Some musical numbers, especially the ones featuring Janaki and Lankesh, also suffer from dramatic inertia given that so much of the characters’ movements only highlight computer graphics that make the theatrical cut of “ Justice League ” look polished. There’s the ersatz and seemingly literally-translated poetry of the song lyrics and expository dialogue. And then there are the totally bogus visual effects that make everything, especially the uninflected facial expressions of a normally generous ensemble cast, look like video game cut scenes. “Adipurush” has layers of problems, in other words, though it’s hard to imagine that most viewers will be able to squint past the movie’s unreflective surface problems.

There’s some hope in the end, but only if you’re inclined to see “Adipurush” as one of a few trend-chasers, whose many generic elements call back to everything, including HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series, Peter Jackson ’s original “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and yes, Rajamouli’s “Baahubali” two-parter. Scenes featuring the pure-hearted simian god Bajrang/Hanuman ( Devdatta Nage ) also shamelessly crib from the recent Andy Serkis-led, motion-capture-focused “Planet of the Apes” movies. The derivative nature of these oft-cribbed elements doesn’t matter as much as this movie’s dramatically flat-footed presentation, which only sometimes picks up during the big showdown between Raghava, Lankesh, and their respective armies.

“Adipurush” only really feels like a movie that was directed and not just covered during its slowly escalating finale, which pits Raghava, his brother Sesh/Laxmana (Sunny Singh), and Bajrang against Lankesh and his superhumanly fast second-in-command, Indrajit ( Vatsal Sheth ). Some of us looked forward to “Adipurush” because it was directed by Om Raut , whose “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior” also pulled itself together during splashy, climactic battle scenes. “Adipurush” still looks rough and moves gracelessly even during slow-motion battles, but at least the narrow focus of these concluding scenes gives the movie some dramatic tension.

It’s hard to otherwise imagine a moviegoer who, just looking at what’s presented in “Adipurush,” will be satisfied by this underwhelming spectacle. Everybody on-screen swims about a vast computer-generated wasteland lost in maxi-sized roles that dwarf their singular qualities. Everything is big here, but nothing looks grand.

Now playing in theaters.

It won't be wrong to call Adipurush one of the most audacious projects made in recent times, but just like Brahmastra, it goes overboard at several places and loses the essence that you would expect to feel in an epic mythological tale.

Despite the dramatic buildup, the climax doesn't live you with that sense of joy, reward or victory. This one’s a sincere attempt that gets a tad overwhelmed by its ambition of handling a story of this magnitude.

Adipurush Movie Review: Prabhas excels as Raghav but substandard VFX is a let-down

Om raut's epic hindu saga, adipurush, opened after many delays and amid a lot of hype. while the film was deemed worth the wait, our review suggests that its overall quality was marred by subpar vfx..

Listen to Story

Prabhas plays Raghav in Adipurush.

  • Adipurush released on June 16.
  • It stars Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh.
  • The film has been helmed by Om Raut.

Release Date: 16 Jun, 2023

It is not easy to incorporate an epic into a 3-hour film. And when you are helming a story as popular as the Ramayan, the nitty-gritties need to be taken into consideration – cast, characterisation, sentiments, facts, storyline. Filmmaker Om Raut attempted so and Adipurush has finally graced the theaters after enduring several delays. Starring Prabhas as the lead with Kriti Sanon, has Adipurush been able to live up to its hype? Let’s find out.

Adipurush is derived into a film based on Rishi Valmiki’s epic, Ramayan. It is a story that almost every Indian has grown up listening to or watching. With Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki and Sunny Singh as Shesh (one of the many names of Lord Ram, Sita and Laxman, respectively), the star-studded cast was one of the film's main attractions. However, the film suffered setbacks in terms of its VFX and dialogues, which proved to be significant drawbacks.

For a minute, leave behind all the buzz and fanfare Adipurush has received until now. Watch the film without any preconceived notions and it will grab your attention from the word ‘go’! And to top it all, what is even a Prabhas film without a heroic entry? You are glued to the screen as the camera pans inside the deep blue ocean and there you see your Raghav sitting peacefully underwater, busy with his tapasya. However, before you can enjoy the calmness of the screen, the hall breaks into thunderous applause.

He emerges from the water and kills an array of dementer-like creatures, which provides an insight into the excitement, VFX, and of course, Raghav’s strength. A larger-than-life film demands heroic shots and you will find low-angle shots in abundance.

Prabhas is believable as Raghav right from the first scene and his past film choices (read Baahubali) have a great deal to play in it. He is strong, mighty, kind and just. However, one must look past his stardom to be able to enjoy what he has to offer on screen. He is a big reason why Adipurush deserves a chance and can be rightfully deemed as the saving grace of the film.

Kriti Sanon as Janaki is beautiful on screen but has way less screen time than we had expected. The actress is mostly juxtaposed amid cleverly crafted VFX. However, it is her chemistry with Prabhas that stands out. Sunny Singh as Shesh is sparsely spread across the film and has a handful of dialogues. Mostly, to substantiate Prabhas. The screenplay for him is built in a way to not let him overpower Prabhas. But not to mention, he does have his moments here and there.

Devdatta Nage is Adipurush’s Bajrangbali. Previously, we have seen a veteran like Dara Singh, play the pivotal Ramayana character. Hence, the expectations with Bajrangbali was beyond measure. Nage’s character has been written with a dash of safe humour. And it is worth mentioning how a segment of the audience in the theatres did a small namaskara as soon as he appeared on the screen. There have been inhibitions about Saif Ali Khan as Raavana in Adipurush. The pressure was doubled with having had the mighty task of sharing screen space and appearing alongside Prabhas and still standing out. Saif did a rather decent job with it. His very presence, the dark monotone that followed, successfully created a sense of terror, which is generally associated with the mythological character.

Though a bit stretched, the first half of Adipurush will leave you looking forward to what’s next. No, we aren’t talking about the dialogues and VFX, yet. The second half is cleverly planned and that’s when we realised where the maximum work was done. However, it isn’t up to the mark. Not quite.

Delving into the VFX first, the makers pushed the release date by six months. For this? Reportedly, Adipurush is one of the most expensive films ever. But the VFX mars the visuals. You see a Ravan landing on a humongous bat at his palace, on a bat-pad. Really? Then you have VFX monkeys residing in a forest, in strapped leather gear. If you also notice the fight scenes cleverly, you’ll notice that it’s never mostly finished. It’s rather covered with dust, smoke or an explosion where your entire screen will be covered by glittery particles during an intense moment. Though we’d give it to director Om Raut for trying to cleverly cut scenes that sparked a meme fest last year, the VFX was still a no-show.

About dialogues. The same was probably crafted keeping in mind the modern-day audience, but the moment you hear Lord Bajrangbali say, “Jo hamari behno ko hath lagayenge, unki lanka laga denge”, you know there's something to think about. Also, you have a Vatsal Sheth as Indrajeet, challenging Raghav in the most unimaginable way possible! You need to watch the film to know the hows and the whats. Oh wait, there are also some gems like ‘Bua ka bagicha hain kya?’ and ‘marega bete’! And we are talking about the era of Lord Ram here.

Soundtracks play a pivotal role in larger-than-life mythologies and Jai Shri Ram appears in several important segments of Adipurush. And it is bound to leave you with goosebumps. No complaints about the background score too. You also have a Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal duet after a long time with Tu Hai Sheetal Dhaara and it will soothe your soul.

Though Adipurush can be safely deemed as one of Om Raut’s biggest works, the film could surely have called for a better visual package. However, it’s a job that is moderately done. If not worse.

All in all, we can’t put a stamp on all the hype that Adipurush has been gathering, but it surely deserves one watch at the theatres. For Prabhas, if nothing else.

Adipurush Movie Review: ADIPURUSH is a wellmade entertainer with a bigscreen appeal.

Adipurush is a well-made entertainer with a big-screen appeal., adipurush review {3.5/5} & review rating.

ADIPURUSH , inspired from the Ramayana, is the story of Lord Rama rescuing Mata Sita from the evil Ravana. Raghav ( Prabhas ), the prince of Ayodhya, is sent on a 14-year  vanvas (exile). He’s accompanied by his wife Janki ( Kriti Sanon ) and brother Shesh (Sunny Singh). One day, while Raghav is roaming in the forest, he meets Shurpankha (Tejaswini Pandit). She falls for him and proposes marriage. Raghav respectfully declines and informs her that he's already married. Shurpankha is unable to bear the truth and she harms Janki. In retaliation, Shesh cuts her nose. She goes back to her kingdom, Lanka, and complains about it to her brother, King Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan). Lankesh decides to exact revenge. He kidnaps Janki and keeps her hostage in the Ashok Vatika in the palace complex. Raghav is devastated and he decides to head to Lanka to rescue Janki and defeat Lankesh. He’s helped by the Vaanar Raja Sugriva (voiced by Gaurrav Walia) and Lord Bajrang (Devdatta G Nage) in this historic battle. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Movie Review: Adipurush

ADIPURUSH is based on the epic, Ramayana. Om Raut's adapted story is a classic. Clearly Om Raut, as a new generation film maker, and back with the accolades of his 2020 super hit film TANHAJI: THE UNSUNG WARRIOR, is driven to tell his eternal tale to a younger audience, that has grown up to VFX films and Super hero franchises from the likes of Marvel etc. To celebrate our own stories is not just laudable but indeed commendable for any storyteller. Some of the scenes are well thought out and interpreted. He also keeps the narrative simplified. However, one feels that Manoj Muntashir Shukla's dialogues could have been more impactful. The only dialogue that stands out is Raghav’s speech before the climax battle.

Om Raut's direction is first-rate. He doesn’t rush through the narrative and takes his time to build the characters and the world in which the film is set in. The film is a visual spectacle and the way he has handled the grandeur is seen to be believed. The 3D effects also are nicely done. The use of the song  ‘Jai Shree Ram’  is praiseworthy and it enhances the impact.

On the flipside, the second half gets dragging. The climax fight goes on and on and makes viewers restless. Some of the CGI could have been better, knowing well that comparisons would be drawn to international films. You can make out that the film maker is keen to establish his own narrative of this tale and hence the dialogues too have perhaps been contemporised.

ADIPURUSH starts on a lovely note. The visuals in the song  'Ram Siya Ram'  are beautiful and the makers smartly and briefly explain the context and background and begin the story straight away from the  vanvas  track. Lankesh’s entry is superb and so is the song  'Shivoham' . To show Lankesh’s statues singing the song is cinematic brilliance. The first half is lengthier than the second half and yet, it is impactful. Some of the scenes that stand out in the first half are Lankesh kidnapping Janki, Raghav meeting Shabari, Bajrang’s entry, Bajrang meeting Raghav for the first time, Sugriva and Vaali’s fight and the intermission point. Post-interval, the film falls in certain scenes. The  ‘sanjeevni booti’  episode and Raghav’s speech are memorable sequences in this hour.

FDFS Public Review : Adipurush Ft. Prabhas | Kriti Sanon | Sunny Singh | Devdatta Nage

Speaking of performances, Prabhas is the apt choice for such a divine role. However, we feel that the expectation of the larger Indian public for this role was perhaps much more. The dilemma of a nation having grown up to this tale and have some of it repeated on television during the pandemic brings a strange conflict of what the audience wants to see or hear as opposed to a more modern rendition of the story the film maker wants to present. Kriti Sanon looks beautiful and gives a decent performance. Saif Ali Khan tries to give his best but is limited to some extent due to the VFX in his scenes and the execution. Om had extracted a wonderful performance from his earlier film and this role could have been another feather in his cap. Devdatta G Nage is impressive. But his dialogues though could have had more reverence and substance. Sunny Singh is fair. Siddharth Kiran Karnick (Vibhishan), Vatsal Seth (Indrajit), Tejaswini Pandit and Ayesha Madhukar (Maya) are okay. Sonal Chauhan (Mandodari) is wasted.

Ajay-Atul's music is one of the film’s USPs.  'Jai Shri Ram'  is like the film’s anthem and has an exhilarating effect.  'Ram Siya Ram'  (by Sachet-Parampara) is soulful.  'Shivoham'  is well-tuned and shot.  'Tu Hai Sheetal Dhaara'  makes for a nice watch.  'Huppa Huiya'  is missing from the film. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara's background score is energetic.

Karthik Palani's cinematography is spectacular. Nachiket Barve's costumes are appealing and in sync with the era shown in the film. Priya Suhass and Nishant Jogdand's production design is rich but perhaps contrasting to the viewer’s expectation in the scenes of Lanka. Ramazan Bulut and Pradyumna Kumar Swain's action is family-friendly and entertaining. VFX in today’s environment of movie making is integral and a style or format may appeal to many and yet one will have sceptics as the sheer possibilities are endless. While it’s terrific in some scenes, there areas scenes where there could have been scope for improvement. The conflict of telling an age old eternal tale in a more modern and contemporary style will always draw multiple views. Some will see glimpses of inspiration even from films like THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Since the film was always marketed as the eternal tale of Lord Rama and the conquest of good over evil, it remains to be seen if the audience would accept some of these scenes in the midst of the grandeur and scale of the rest of the film. Ashish Mhatre and Apurva Motiwale Sahai's editing is neat but could have been sharper in the second half.

On the whole, ADIPURUSH is a well-made entertainer with a big-screen appeal. At the box office, it’ll have a bumper opening and a strong weekend due to the immense hype and extreme excitement among the target audience to watch it in cinemas.

Adipurush review: Saif Ali Khan and Prabhas fight it out with their CGI armies, film offers a visual spectacle

Adipurush review: with its passable vfx and unironically funny dialogues, om raut's ramayana adaptation doesn't really check all the boxes..

Take a bit of Avengers and Lord of The Rings, add a pinch of Game of Thrones, and top it up with Temple Run — and Adipurush is served. Agreed it's no easy feat to recreate an epic tale, but with all the research and material at hand — through Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas and Valmiki's Ramayana — if this is director Om Raut's best take on the contemporary Ramayana, we need to go back and revisit the original in all its glory, and restore our sanity. Adipurush is merely a Bollywood-ised version of one of the most epic tales that ever existed. If you keep the story aside for it's largely known to all, the execution turns out to be a messy blend of over-the-top CGI and passable VFX, and making it worse are the intentionally funny dialogues that sound misplaced in a sensitive and mythological story. Why would you want Hanuman to say ‘Jalegi tere baap ki’? (Also read: Adipurush movie review and release live updates )

Adipurush review: Prabhas plays Raghav in the film.

As for the narrative, Adipurush wastes no time in character-building or telling us the back stories of how things transpired in Ayodhya. After briefly using the opening credits to establish that that Ram (Prabhas as Raghav) and Lakshman (Sunny Singh as Shesh) along with Sita (Kriti Sanon as Janaki) have left for 14 years of vanvaas, the shows Raavan (Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh) disguised as a sadhu and kidnapping Janaki. There are quick portions that are essential to Ramayana that come and go and leave a bit of an impact: Shurpanakha's (Raavan's sister) nose gets cut when she tries to attack Janaki and lure Raghav, Shabri's joothe ber episode showcases Raghav sitting with an old woman, who guides him to seek help from Sugriva and his vanara sena and Bajrang (Devdatta Nage as Hanuman) meeting Ram in the jungle and helping him rescue Janaki from Raavan.

The first half is pretty slow and dragged, and never makes you feel invested in the characters or excite you to see what unfolds next. The screenplay never rises beyond being a sluggish narration with average dialogues. It's only in the second half when Raghav lays the foundation for Ram Setu and along with his army, heads to Lanka and things start to pick up pace. The next few action sequences with CGI armies fighting each other is the highlight of the film, and I am sure it'll evoke some polarised reactions.

And mind you, all this was done with a whopping budget of ₹ 600 crore. Imagine what wonders could one do with a fraction of that money. Raut indeed succeeds in mounting the film on a scale that he envisioned, but he falters when it comes to adding depth to his characters and refraining from cartoon-ish representation.

Kriti Sanon plays Janaki in the film.

Prabhas may have shown enormous conviction playing Lord Ram but what's with those wooden expressions? I remember seeing Ram and Sita in the original Ramayana and there's something very pleasant about their persona. Even in pictures, there's always a smile, but Prabhas brings no variation whether he's happy, sad, angry or confused. Kriti delivers a decent performance in Sita's part and has a very charming screen presence. Her confrontation scene with Raavan is well-written and nicely executed. Though Sunny Singh gets very little to do, his action scenes with Vatsal Seth as Meghnath are spectacular. Sonal Chauhan as Raavan's wife Mandodri gets exactly two scenes and line. The best of the lot has to be Devadatta playing Hanuman. He brings CGI alive on screen and how! His larger-than-life structure actually adds gravitas to the film. Lastly, Saif is the saving grace in Adipurush. No, I'm not saying he is good, but he is definitely better than the other characters in terms of the expressions and the emotions he evokes each time he comes on screen. And please just simply ignore the portions with his nine other heads - I am still struggling to find words to explain them. For now, less I say, better it is.

The music composed by Ajay-Atul and Sachet–Parampara is the heart of Adipurush. Each time Jai Shri Ram is played in the background, you get goosebumps. Ram Siya Ram is equally enchanting. The track Shivoham featuring Lankesh sitting in his den and playing a musical instrument is quite a visual spectacle.

It won't be wrong to call Adipurush one of the most audacious projects made in recent times, but just like Brahmastra, it goes overboard at several places and loses the essence that you would expect to feel in an epic mythological tale. Even if you say it's made keeping the young audiences in mind, there is no reason why they need to see a mediocre adaptation when the heartwarming original still remains relevant. Watch Adipurush in theatres for its scale, grand scale and the 3D fun it brings, even if main actors still look as one-dimensional as you can imagine.

Adipurush Review – Masala-Fied Ramayan

Adipurush Review USA Premiere Report

OUR RATING 2.75/5

Prabhas-Adipurush-Movie-Review

Adipurush is the cinematic retelling of the timeless tale of Ramayan. What happens when Janaki (Kriti Sanon) is abducted by Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan) during her vanavas with Raghava (Prabhas) is the movie’s basic plot.

Performances

Prabhas, as a star, has the aura to pull off Rama. There is an inherent innocence and calmness in his eyes. But, despite these positive aspects, Prabhas doesn’t really hit the mark with the once-in-a-lifetime part.

Prabhas is riddled with inconsistent characterisation. His looks are that of a warrior, but the character trait given is that of a calm and composed Lord Rama. The mixture doesn’t come across well on screen, making him look passive.

The visual effects, too, don’t help the cause. At times Prabhas seems stiff and sends a plastic vibe neck down. In a couple of emotional scenes, Prabhas is fine and is largely alright.

Kriti Sanon as Sita barely passes muster. First of all, she has less screen time and doesn’t have much content to dive into. Kriti Sanon doesn’t spoil anything but fails to leave an impression that would help her be remembered playing the legendary character.

And last but not least, Saif Ali Khan plays Lankesh, aka Ravan. He goes over the top with his portrayal as if playing a mass movie villain. It deviates so much from the material that the character seems almost unrecognisable. It feels as if he walked from the sets of the director’s (Om Raut) last film Tanhaji where he played the antagonist role. After a point, the antics get irritating, and his act becomes senseless if one thinks of Ravana from the classic Ramayana.

Director-Om-Raut

Two-film-old Om Raut directs Adipurush. His last, Tanhaji, was a VFX-heavy period story that well blended special effects and drama. In his latest outing, Om Raut has picked a much-loved epic tale of the victory of good over evil, Ramayan, with a much more significant visual effects involvement.

The two critical things associated with the Adipurush narrative are the visual reimagination and the change in the presentation of the age-old characters. These elements make it different from the previous iterations.

The first half of Adiprush is less on larger-than-life visual imagination and focuses on the key characters. The world and setting are created here, and the maker charted the usual, expected classical drama course.

The result is a watchable fare with an engaging drama. Although nothing outstanding acting-wise, the visuals and the sticking to the characters help sail through the narrative.

The problem in Adipurush starts when Om Raut tries to masala-fi the narrative with the modern-day mass movie sensibility. The visual effects, too, are designed to suit the over-the-top masala on offer. All these issues appear majorly in the second half.

The proceedings automatically turn inconsistent mainly due to the characterisations of the protagonist (Raghava) and antagonist (Lankesh). The former appears very passive, and the latter is in a different zone altogether, playing a regular villain to the galleries type of parts. It is irritating in parts.

The whole thing then leads to a never-ending, VFX-laden climax. Things go on and on and on and don’t seem to have an end in sight. Such is the impact that, finally, the audience feels relieved when it all ends. Amidst all these, the real emotions are lost. There is no emotional connection when Sita and Ram meet, and one is happy that things are getting over.

Overall, Adipurush is a big screen spectacle that is not just repackaging visually but also sensibility-wise. It is a mass, modern version of the classic Ramayan tale. If one doesn’t mind the distortion of the original characters and some tacky VFX, try it, but don’t keep the epic characterisation in mind.

Hanuman-Adipurush-Movie-Review

Lakshman and Hanuman are the two crucial parts of Adipurush. Sunny Singh essays the former, whereas Devdatta Nage takes on the mantle of the latter. Sunny appears lacklustre, which is why despite a good enough runtime, he fails to register. Devadatta Nage’s Hanuman act gets better as the narrative progresses. The rest of the cast plays bits and pieces roles and are alright.

Music-Director-Sanchit-Balhara

Ajay-Atul and Sachet-Parampara (Ram Sita Ram) composer duos have provided Adipurush’s music. The Jai Shri Ram track is a blockbuster of anthemic proportions, elevating movie prospects. Although not on the same level, it works well within the narrative. The background score, too, is consistently good and, as is the trend now, very loud. It is effective, and that’s the job done at the end of the day.

Karthik Palani’s cinematography is satisfactory. The visual effects do a lot of the heavy lifting, but one can see some good work in setting them up underneath. The editing should have been better, considering the length and the exhaustive feeling at the end. The film’s biggest USP, its VFX, is a mixed bag. A lot is tacky and cartoonish, but some parts simultaneously look incredible on screen. The writing is overdone, and the dubbing gives Adipurush (Telugu) a dubbed movie feel.

Adipurush Movie Review by M9News

Final Report:

Adipurush’s second half is lengthy and tiring. Instead of a classic tale, it is a mass retelling with a senseless Ravan. But the big-screen appeal saves the day. Adipurush is Ramayan 2.0 for over-the-top action lovers.

First Half Report:

Adipurush is a Ramayan masala-fied. The first half is watchable for the epic tale that Ramayanam is despite the presentation. The second half is crucial now, as the VFX novelty doesn’t last long.

Prabhas emerged as a pan-India star with Baahubali. Though the craze did not transform his next movie Saaho into a money spinner, Prabhas became the most wanted star for Bollywood filmmakers who finally made Adipurush with him. Adipurush is a huge-budgeted mythological film based on Ramayana, directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series.

The first teaser could not receive a great response due to the poor computer-generated imagery, but the movie slowly garnered craze as it reached the release date. Prabhas’s stardom and Lord Rama’s sentiment are doing wonders with the advance bookings for Adipurush. Touted as one of the most expensive Indian films ever made and with stars like Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, and Saif Ali Khan, Adipurush is releasing today all over the world. Here is the review of Adipurush.

What Is It About?

Based on Valmiki Ramayana, Adipurush is all about Raghava (Prabhas), Janaki (Kriti Sanon) who face threat from demon Ravana (Saif Ali Khan). How Raghava with the help of a Bajrangi aka Hanuman and Sugreeva and army of Vanaras take on Ravana forms the crux of the story.

Performances

Prabhas performed fine as Raghava. As an ordinary man with no major powers, Raghava’s woes and vulnerability were portrayed well. Some action episodes of him are well made, but rest looked cinematic and artificial. Saif Ali Khan is good as Ravana, he got so much elevation in the film. His Ravana looks are modernized a bit much. He appeared powerful, but it also looked odd when he walks around in the digitally raised giant personality. Kriti is decent but she has a very limited role. Others did fine in their respective roles. Indrajit’s character enthralls for some time in the second half. Sonal Chauhan is seen in just two scenes. Devdatta Nage as Bajrang (Hanuman) is good.

Technicalities

Adipurush’s first look was denounced, but that must have made the makers focus more on the visuals. The overall visuals are better than the expectation, but there are some scenes which require betterment. The dialogues are alright. Background music stands tall among all in Adipurush and it elevated many scenes. Some scenes, frames, and characterizations remind us of popular movies in Hollywood, like ‘The Planet Of Apes’ among others. But it appeals to kids.

Scale & Grandeur

Thumbs Down

Lengthy Climax

VFX Quality In 2D

Ramayana is one of the very well-known epics and the story itself is not new. It has been told several times earlier in different forms, but Om Raut wanted to show the Ramayana as a film using modern technology and star faces. It worked to a major extent, but the damage done by CGI work could not be fully rectified. The VFX and CG work in 2D is not impressive. Whereas they are done well in 3D.

The first half of Adipurush is good with enough drama and an engaging narrative. A decent presentation of the actual story of Ramayana keeps entertaining mostly.

The second half takes off from a decent first half, but it mainly has the battle and confrontation episodes that have gone overboard with the graphics. Starting from Raghava and his army attacking Ravana’s Lanka and until the end, the whole battle episode is lengthy. It becomes an over-the-top action movie and that too with a lot of VFX work.

The background music comes to rescue Adipurush from sliding down due to pretty average VFX. Also, most of the movie has a dark ambiance. It might be the color symbolization of the Ravana and Lanka theme, but it is overdone.

Ravana’s characterization appears a bit awkward to the traditional fans of Ramayana. His fort in Lanka, his attire, and even his armory look like it was heavily inspired by the ‘superhero’ movies. The makers perspective might be correct to make the villain look trendy so as to enthrall the younger generation audiences who are very connected to the character and theme trend. Ravana’s ten heads speaking within themselves before taking a decision is interesting.

Overall, Adipurush starts as a drama-driven classic tale, but that turns into a lengthy action fest towards the latter half. It might attract children and the family audience who might want to enjoy a Hindu mythological story with a modern presentation. Considering the openings and large screenings across pan India, need to see how audiences receive it. If prepared to watch it, go for a big screen experience and recommended to see it in 3D.

Bottomline: Modern ‘3D’ Ramayana For New Generation

Rating: 2.75 /5

Adipurush Review: Motion Capture without Emotion

Adipurush Review: Motion Capture without Emotion

Movie: Adipurush Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: UV Creations, T Series Cast: Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, Devdatta Nage, Vatsal Seth, Trupti Toradmal, Sonal Chauhan and others Music: Ajay-Atul DOP: Karthik Palani Editor: Apurva Motiwale Sahai,  Ashish Mhatre Producers: Bhushan Kumar, Om Raut, Prasad Sutar, Rajesh Nair, Direction:  Om Raut Release Date: June 16, 2023

As a Ramayana film, "Adipurush" has generated significant buzz, with many people curious to see how Prabhas fits into the role of Lord Ram. Consequently, the film has garnered a lot of hype in the past couple of weeks.

Let us now examine its merits and demerits.

Story: Raghava (Prabhas), Janaki (Kriti Sanon), and Laxman (Sunny Singh) are exiles living in a forest. When Lakshman cuts off Soorpanaka's nose, her brother Ravana (Saif Ali Khan) kidnaps Sita and takes her to Lanka.

Raghava declares war on Ravana with the assistance of Hanuman (Devadatta) and Vanara Sena.

Artistes’ Performances: Prabhas shines in his portrayal of Raghava, also known as Lord Ram. His tall and commanding presence perfectly suits the character. Om Raut presents Lord Rama as a warrior prince, showcasing his more aggressive side, making Prabhas an ideal choice for the role.

Kriti Sanon delivers an adequate performance as Janaki. Despite having limited screen time, she performs her part well.

Saif Ali Khan initially portrays Raavana convincingly, but as the film progresses, the character's portrayal veers more towards that of a superhero rather than the traditional Raavana.

Devadatta Nage stands out as Hanuman, delivering a stellar performance that fits his character perfectly.

Sonal Chauhan makes a cameo appearance as Ravan's wife Mandodari, while Trupti Toradmal's portrayal of Soorpanaka is satisfactory.

Technical Excellence: The outstanding songs composed by Ajay-Atul greatly contribute to the film's overall strength. The skillful implementation of the song "Jai Shri Ram" in the background score enhances the drama in numerous scenes.

The music department emerges as the greatest strength of this epic drama. However, the visual effects and 3D effects fall short, as the background and other objects appear strange. The visual effects in the war sequences during the second half are particularly disappointing.

Highlights: Prabhas as Lord Ram Background music score First half

Drawback: The lengthy war scene in the second half Dark tone of the film Raavana’s characterisation Poor VFX No devotional feel

Analysis The "Ramayana" epic is a fundamental part of Indian culture and is known by all. It is deeply ingrained in our traditions and way of life. Director Om Raut had the intention to update this epic tale to appeal to today's young audience by employing innovative cinematic approaches. However, despite his good intentions, Om Raut lacks the expertise to bring his plan to fruition.

Om Raut chose to focus on a specific section of the Valmiki Ramayanam, starting in the middle of its original telling. The film begins with the Soorpanaka tale, which occurs during Ram and Sita's exile, and concludes with the battle between Ram and Ravana. Om Raut aimed to zero in on the Ramayanam's 'Yuddhakanda' (the war episode).

The initial part highlights Raavana's admirable traits and his devotion to Lord Shiva, while the latter part depicts Soorpanaka's nose being severed, Sita's abduction, Hanuman's arrival, and Ram's construction of the sethu. Therefore, the first half of the film offers a wealth of material. Despite some cheesy CGI and a peculiar depiction of Ravana's Lanka, the first half of the film is still watchable for this reason.

However, the second half of the film devolves into a standard, action-heavy fare reminiscent of the Hollywood superhero genre. The entire second half consists of an extensive and unending battle between Ram and Ravana, lacking any emotional depth. Furthermore, the visual effects are, to put it mildly, substandard. In many instances, their poor quality hinders our ability to truly enjoy the experience.

Surprisingly, Om Raut, who typically handles VFX-heavy productions like "Tanhaji," seems to struggle in this film. The dialogues are also ineffective.

Telugu audiences have witnessed better mythological films in the past, with a long history of producing fantastic films based on the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Hence, Om Raut's depiction of Lanka and Ravana's characterization falls drastically short. Lanka's world appears as if it is from a science fiction film, and it is puzzling why Raavana walks with a limp.

While it is acceptable to reimagine a popular work and present it in a new way, Om Raut made a significant mistake by transforming a magnificent epic into a gaudy superhero film lacking emotion or intriguing material.

The highlight of the film is Prabhas and the music, but the rest of it falls short.

Overall, "Adipurush" is a distorted retelling of the Ramayana that lacks emotion. While it provides some moments of theatrical experience and Prabhas fits well as Lord Ram, it does not succeed if you are seeking a devotional feel or an experience of a VFX-rich film.

Bottom line: Hey Ram

If there is any film that has created mayhem in recent times, it is undoubtedly Prabhas starrer Adipurush. The movie is based on the Indian epic Ramayana and is directed by Om Raut of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior fame. Kriti Sanon played Sita, while Bollywood star hero Saif Ali Khan played the demon king Ravanasura. T-Series and Retrophiles backed this magnum opus. Amidst unprecedented hype and fan frenzy, Adipurush hit the screens today. Let’s see whether the film lived up to the hype or not.

Adipurush showcases the Yuddha Kanda in Ramayana. The movie begins with Lord Rama, aka Raghava (Prabhas), getting banished from his kingdom Ayodhya for 14 years at the decree of his father, Dasaratha. It is Bharata’s mother and Dasaradha’s younger wife, Kaikeyi, who demands that Lord Rama be sent to the forest so that her son be crowned. Sita, aka Janaki (Kriti Sanon), and Seshu, aka Lakshmana (Sunny Singh), accompany Lord Rama in exile. One day, the demon king Ravana (Saif Ali Khan) abducts Sita by diverting Rama and Seshu with a magical deer. Later, Rama meets Hanuman (Devdatte Naga), and the rest of the movie is about how Lord Rama won over Ravana and brought back Sita.

Plus Points:

Very few actors in the current generation can pull off mythological or periodic roles with ease and conviction, and Prabhas is one among them. The actor has an unmatched aura and royalty, and Adipurush couldn’t have been any better if some other actor had played Lord Sri Rama. The PAN-India star amazes big time with his charisma, body language, and dialogue delivery, and he fits the bill perfectly as Lord Rama. The way he utters lengthy dialogues and his screen presence are indomitable.

One more best thing to have happened to Adipurush is Saif Ali Khan. The team had an uphill task of casting an actor who could match Prabhas, and they indeed did a great job by casting Saif Ali Khan. The star actor makes the film even fiery with his incredible performance as Lankesh, i.e., Ravanasura. Saif Ali Khan performs it to the tee and has scored brownie points too.

Sita character is definitely a challenge for someone like Kriti Sanon, who mostly played glamorous roles in her career, but boy, she is perfect as Janaki, aka Sita. Kriti’s divine looks and her mature performance adds depth to the proceedings. Devdatte Nage, the Marathi actor, breathed life into the role of Lord Hanuman. Sunny Singh, Vatsal Sheth, and Sonal Chauhan pass muster.

Om Raut’s strength lies in showcasing the drama, and he handled the first half in a very neat manner. There are many well-executed sequences in the first hour, including the Jatayu – Ravana fight, Hanuman meeting Rama for the first time, the face-off between Sugriva and Vaali, and Hanuman setting Lanka on fire. These aspects are something that are very familiar to the audience, but the way Om Raut has presented them intrigues one. Ajay-Atul duo’s songs are superb, to say the least, and the background score has lifted the movie in many areas.

Minus Points:

While the first half was pretty engaging, the second half failed to continue the momentum. It starts on a dull note as the proceedings showcased look bland here. The final battle takes the lion’s share of the screen time, becoming an exhaustive watch after a point of time. The editing team should have reduced the length by 10 minutes to make things better.

All the fears about the VFX have come true, sadly. The teaser received severe flak from one and all, and hence the team reworked on the VFX works for a long time. But the end result is unsatisfactory in this aspect. For a movie of 500 crore budget, the visual effects are substandard.

One more drawback of Adipurush is that it is mostly shot in Hindi. Most of the time, we see actors mouthing Hindi dialogues, and this surely is a major disappointment as the makers stated that it is a Telugu-Hindi bilingual. The impact got bogged down at times due to this issue. The Ravanasura’s look, the way Lanka world has been designed may not go well with many. The makers took some cinematic liberties, and a few scenes look exaggerated.

Technical Aspects:

Telugu dialogues written by Bheem Sreenivas are good. The Telugu lyrics penned by Ramajogayya Sastry gelled well with the music composed by the Ajay-Atul duo. Shivoham and Jai Shree Ram songs stand out and are sure to evoke goosebumps. The background score by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara is magnificent.

The costumes designed by Nachiket Barve give the movie a modern touch. The production design created by Priya Suhass and Nishanth Jogdand may receive mixed reactions as the Lanka world has been showcased in a different manner. The 3D effects are good in a few scenes.

The makers have gone all out and spent heavily on the movie, but VFX-wise, the movie disappoints. Karthik Palani’s cinematography is neat. The movie needs some serious editing, especially as far as the second half is concerned. The choreography of action set pieces is ordinary, and they don’t create any excitement.

Coming to the director, Om Raut, he did a decent job with the movie. The way things are handled in the first half looks good, but he should have taken more care regarding the second half. In his first Hindi outing, Tanhaji, Om Raut focused more on emotions, but here more concentration was on special effects. Better second half could have made Adipurush a great outing.

On the whole, Adipurush is a modernized version of Ramayana that majorly benefits from the performances of Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, and Devdatte Nage. The movie has a neat first half and a below-par second half. The background score and songs come in handy, and they make it up for the substandard VFX works. Om Raut manages to infuse some good moments despite the familiar tale. The box office prospects of the movie will depend on how the family audiences will receive this updated version of the Indian epic. If you could ignore the slow-paced second half, Adipurush will be a decent watch this weekend.

‘Adipurush’ movie review: Prabhas falters in this black-and-white retelling of the ‘Ramayana’

Director om raut takes a leap of faith only to land in safe territory, while prabhas looks the part but is too restrained to convey the inner turmoil of a man for whom virtue is more important than his life.

Prabhas in ‘Adipurush’

One of the reasons that our epics have become ingrained in our cultural consciousness is because they make us feel the thin line between good and evil. In Om Raut’s big-ticket but drab retelling of the Ramayana , there is a pillar of concrete in between.

In the run-up, when the images on the posters veered away from Raja Ravi Varma’s calendar art, it gave us hope that Raut would take a leap of faith. When the unusually long disclaimer said that it is not an authoritative interpretation of the epic, one thought Raut was not shackled by tradition. However, early in the film, it becomes clear that we are about to watch the story of Lord Ram and not of the Prince of Ayodhya; the changes are only cosmetic.

Instead of a deep study of human nature, Raut sees the epic as an action-adventure and seeks to engage the video game-crazy audience in all age groups who marvel at the sight of Marvel’s Avengers and use  Lanka lag gayi  as a cheap metaphor to describe a troubled condition. Yes, this is a dialogue from the film and reflects the kind of cinematic liberty that the makers have taken. The film says that in the battle between virtue and vice, one can’t afford to be neutral, but goes on to take most of the creative liberties only with those who represent evil.

After a brief background through poetic images, Raut kickstarts the action in the forest where Raghava, along with his wife Janaki and younger brother Shesha, is spending his 14-year exile. One day, when Raghava comes out of a fountain, Lankesh’s sister Surpankha gets besotted with his physique and it spirals into a series of events that we all know. Raut doesn’t do the explaining and niftily moves from one episode to another, leaving aside the moral dilemmas that dot Valmiki’s text and its several interpretations over the centuries. While the action choreography like the Jatayu’s chase of Lankesh’s mammoth bat vehicle keeps you interested, the lack of emotional heft makes you cringe.

Along with co-writer Manoj Muntashir, Raut has taken the leap of faith only to fall into the ‘safe’ territory. Even today, in terms of storytelling, Ramanand Sagar’s  Ramayan  evokes more emotional and intellectual interest. Be it the Surpanakha’s episode or Bali-Sugriva duel, or for that matter, Vibhishan’s role in bringing down the downfall of his brother, the writers have not navigated the space between the right and the wrong, making the narrative as stiff as Hanuman’s tale.

Prabhas and Kriti Sanon in ‘Adipurush’

Prabhas and Kriti Sanon in ‘Adipurush’

It is a sad reflection of our times that our epics which strike a balance between human frailties and greatness are depicted in a way where there are no grey areas for the hero and villain to negotiate, and hardly any nuance for the audience to reflect upon. A little more malleability would have made it resonate with the times. There is Shabri, but Ahalya hasn’t made the cut.

Either the characters are white-washed or coated with tonnes of black, leaving little space for flesh and blood to ooze out of the series of cardboards on display. Some look better because the others are a little too flaky. For instance, Prabhas as Raghava looks the part in terms of physique and persona, but is a little too restrained to convey the inner turmoil of a man for whom virtue is bigger than his life. The role required shedding multiple layers of Baahubali , but he has taken off only the top coat. He is further hamstrung by his Hindi dialogue delivery as it lacks the intonation and modulation required to portray the iconic character. He gets the calm and poise right but the earnestness and pain are missing.

And when one eventually starts believing in Prabhas, Sunny Singh evokes inadvertent laughter for he seems to have missed the way to the Punjabi Bagh Ramleela. It is also hard to accept Devdutta Nage as Hanuman.

In contrast to Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan seems to have been given a double dose of overacting and some padding. Reduced to a caricature, he plays Lankesh/ Raavana as a WWE fighter unleashed on a lissom Kriti Sanon . The attempt to take us into the complex mind of Raavana by letting the ten heads talk to each other remains dilettantish. There is no real dialogue between Raavana and Vibhishan or Mandodari to give us an idea of his personality.

Saif Ali Khan in ‘Adipurush’

Saif Ali Khan in ‘Adipurush’

Similarly, the combination of live-action and motion capture is a notable achievement in terms of Indian entertainment space but it doesn’t add any real spark to the storytelling. In fact, the chase scenes look utterly fake even in the context of the mythical characters.

The female voice remains feeble. Kriti Sanon as Janaki looks graceful, but Raut has hardly given her any space to make an impact on the battle between two hyper-masculine men. Mandodari (Sonal Chauhan) is sidelined as well after two customary lines.

Raut’s technical brilliance came to notice in  Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior .  Here he does show some sparks of ingenuity in capturing the dark recesses of Lankesh like when he gets a massage from snakes, but overall his imagination is a little too derivative for comfort. Raavan’s Lanka seems like the ruins of Gotham City and the monsters and primates seem to have been drawn from  The Lord of the Rings  and  Planet of the Apes.  Poor Lankesh doesn’t get to flaunt his gold either. The digitally-created Sugriv hardly carries any expression on his face, and the amorous scenes between Raghav and Sita remind one of TV commercials for fashion brands! Ajay Atul’s music raises hopes but there is little space for the lilt as Raut seems anxious to cut to action.

When it comes to the nuts and bolts of the battle, it is the same old arrows of Ramanand Sagar’s vintage that generate a bigger flash in the skies this time. But we know when (emotional) power remains constant, current is inversely proportional to voltage.

Adipurush is currently running in theatres

Adipurush Movie Review: Prabhas' Superhero-fied Ramayana Adaptation Is Deterred By Terrible VFX and Flat Writing

Director: Om Raut

Cast: Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan, Sunny Singh

"Why hasn't the Indian film industry been able to crack a franchise or even a standalone film that gives a fitting answer to the globally celebrated MCU entries, despite having a rich mythology and literature to source great stories from?" This is a question I'd often ask myself. When SS Rajamouli brought the best of both worlds—a universally appealing form and a soul strongly inspired by Amar Chitra Katha—together, he made history with  Baahubali , encouraging filmmakers to think bigger and beyond the self-created horizon. Naturally, when Om Raut's adaptation of Ramayana,  Adipurush , was announced in 2020, I was hopeful that we would be finally seeing an epic, made for the contemporary audience who have consumed the MCU/DC titles, told in the grandest way possible. Considering the names associated with the project, there would be no paucity of resources, I assumed. Oh boy, how wrong I was. Sure, the first trailer of the film helped tone our expectations down but no,  Adipurush  is still far from acceptable.

The problem with Adipurush is at a very fundamental level: lack of an original vision. The film is entirely shot on a green/blue screen, mandating excessive reliance on visual effects to create its world from scratch. The visual effects are embarrassingly bad but what if I say it's not even the biggest problem with the film? The conundrum here is that its aesthetic —both visuals and style — seems largely borrowed from Hollywood superhero films. In one of the many battles in the film, the camera circularly tracks Raghava, Lakshman, Bajrang, Sugriva and Jambavan as they prepare to battle Raavan's massive army of CG minions. It's impossible not to see the inspiration from the iconic Avengers (2012) shot. The creatures that attack Raghav early in the film look like haphazardly rendered death eaters from the  Harry Potter  films. The painfully tiring and long climax bears an uncanny resemblance to the final battle from  Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 — from the dim lighting to the gloomy computer-generated structures of Lanka. Even the image of a one-on-one clash between Raghava and Raavan reminds you of the final Harry vs Voldemort showdown.

The climax, the film's most exhausting and bland part, feels like a pre-visualisation demo for a fantasy video game and the writing doesn't help either. Our team has to first take over Raavan's son Indrajith (who has hyper-speed abilities... like Flash) and then Kumbhakarna and then get to Raavan. There's no inventiveness in action here either; 45 minutes of Prabhas and other CG characters pretending to fight hordes of poor CG creatures and shoot CG arrows, is definitely not fun. In fact, it's a widely hated MCU cliche. The first half of the film packs in the majority of the story, leaving nothing but bloated, boring battle sequences for the second half. While Adipurush feels like an unrealised but nevertheless ambitious hotchpotch of superhero film ideas on a macro, ideation level, it's disheartening to see the film fail even on a micro, purely technical level. The audio of dialogues in the Telugu version in multiple scenes didn't sync with lip movement, if the distraction caused by the awful VFX wasn't enough. Likewise, the choice to go with Ravi Shankar's voice for Raavan comes across as yet another impediment because, by this point, the voice has become a boring standard for Telugu villains.

Adipurush  is an upsetting mess on the creative front. The characters in the foreground and background environment are never in harmony, constantly diverting you from investing in the emotion of the scene, even if you try hard to focus. There are countless instances where the speed and smoothness of the characters don't match the movement of the objects in the background. For instance, the characters are operating at a normal speed while the birds in the background fly in slow motion. The lighting and masking make some characters look like PNG files overlayed on a stock, screen-saver background. Let's just say, the visuals are incredibly disappointing. Did I say that the visuals are poor?

So keeping the flawed visuals aside, how does the film do, on a story or drama level? There's little to no spark here too, with almost every sequence overstaying its welcome. The abduction of Janaki is a defining moment of Ramayana and of course, it should be treated with the importance it deserves, but the thrill in the sequence is undone because it never seems to end. For a brief moment, when Jathayu comes to save the immobile Janaki, who is tied to Raavan's Dragon-like bird, only to be slayed by the villain in one of the very few memorable moments from the film, I genuinely felt the film justifies its existence. Because for this brief moment, we see what Adipurush could have been. And should have been. But eventually, it wears you down once Raavan reaches Lanka and the scene keeps going on and on, with extensive slow-motion shots. This is only an example of such many overlong sequences in the film. There isn't an iota of thrill or magic to be experienced in what are supposed to be grand, rousing sequences.

There are very few noteworthy moments in the film. For instance, the scene where Raghav first prays to the god of seas, requesting him to allow his Vanara army to build the bridge to Lanka, only to be compelled to aim a Brahmastra at the seas is great, both visually and writing-wise, because we see this man's morals firsthand instead of just being told about them. Similarly, there is a brief moment Raavan shares with his wife, Mandodhari, who is clad in white, having accepted her husband's fate just as he is about to enter the battlefield. Such scenes make you wonder why there aren't more moments like these.

Another major problem with Adipurush is how characters are written and portrayed with zero depth. The way Raavan is presented as a massively built man with a peculiar gait, that looks like a child mimicking The Rock, is unintentionally funny. Sure, the idea to make his 10 heads, each with a different personality, converse with each other sounds interesting but it's overdone to a point where it becomes a gag, once again, an unintentional one. It's also baffling that in a three-hour-long film, Raghav barely interacts with his brother, Lakshman, or even Raavan. Sunny Singh's Lakshman merely exists to make questionable arguments, only for Raghav to correct him and exhibit his principles in the process. For a film titled  Adipurush , it might be surprising that even Raghav himself makes his presence barely felt until the second half and every second shot being a low-angle one doesn't help in establishing his majestic presence, other than adding redundancy. Adipurush is a colossal mess as a product of visual storytelling. Once again, it's not just the bad VFX that taint the film, it's the lack of a strong, original vision. Ajay-Atul's inspiring score can only do so much to salvage the film.

Adipurush Movie Review – Commercial Ramayana !

Adipurush movie review

Adipurush movie review

TELUGU360 Rating: 2.75/5

Pan-Indian star Prabhas delivered two back-to-back disappointments with Saaho and Radhe Shyam. His next offering Adipurush is a mythological drama that is directed by Om Raut. The film is hitting the screens on Friday and the pre-sales are terrific in all the languages and in all the territories. Prabhas plays Lord Rama and Kriti Sanon reprises the role of Sita. Saif Ali Khan plays the evil Ravana in Adipurush. A major portion of the film’s budget is spent on the VFX work. T Series and Retrophiles are the producers.

Story: Adipurush’s story covers part of Ramayana, The Aranya Kanda. The movie starts with Ravanasura ( Saif Ali Khan) abducting Sita ( Kriti Sanon). Rest of the film is about Sri Rama ( Prabhas) ‘s effort to bring Sita from Lanka with the help of vanara sena

Analysis : Ramayana story has been told umpteen times on the big screen, on Television, and in books. Many writers and directors have presented their versions for decades. Adipurush Director Om Raut came up with an interesting version of Ramayan. The approach is to make the Ramayana epic appeal to the present generation which grew up watching Marvel Universe films. In this deliberate attempt to commercialize Ramayana, the team Adipurush has been partially successful. Had they made a crisper runtime version, Adipurush would have been a good watch. The Ravana fort artwork is lavish, The Ravanasura’s associate demons’ getups highly resemble Hollywood fiction films than Hindu mythology. The first half of the film has many good episodes one after another and it keeps the audience engaged. However, the second half could not meet the standards set by the first half. The climax portion is very lengthy, high budget visuals were gone waste here.

Performances: Prabhas who has an angry young man image, tried his best to portray lord Shriram’s character. He did well. The crucial role of Sita played by Kriti Sanon has less screen time but is good. There are many cinematic liberties with Saif ali khan‘s Ranvasura character.

Positives: Prabhas as Raghava Good First half Soothing Music Jai Shriram vibe Visual effects throughout the film Decent 3D episodes

Negatives: Excessive length Shabby VFX works in a couple of scenes. Second half

The Commercialized version of Ramayana is a mixed bag. The first 50% of the film is VERY GOOD, the next 30% is so-so and the climax 20% is average. For most of the parts, the visuals are better than expected. The songs and background score are Excellent. The lengthy run-time and shabby VFX work at times play the spoilsport. Overall, the needle stops somewhere between” One time watch” to ” Good Watch ”.

Adipurush Review: Why Mess With An Epic?

Cherry blossoms in Sri Lanka, Hanuman speaking Bombaiya, the mythical Sone Ki Lanka looking darkly Gothic, Raavan looking like a Bollywood dude... this is not modernisation. This is a travesty, asserts Deepa Gahlot.

adipurush movie review rating

When Ramanand Sagar's series Ramayan was telecast on Doordarshan, the streets used to empty out; official functions and wedding rituals rescheduled.

The devout used to perform aarti in front of their television sets, and then sit down to watch it with their families.

By today's standards, the special effects were primitive, the costumes eye-wateringly blingy, but it did not matter because it connected with the audience at some spiritual level.

Plus, it was dramatic, emotional and entertaining.

During the lockdown, it was scheduled again on OTT platforms and still broke viewership records.

Today, it is difficult, if not impossible, to make a modern version of the Ramayan, without keeping in mind the social and political ramifications.

The producers already got a glimpse of the virulent trolling when the promos of Adipurush were released last year.

Parts of it had to reportedly go back to the drawing board.

The film was preceded with a very long disclaimer, read out for the illiterate, stating its origins from Valmiki's Ramayan, made with ' aradhna ' (devotion), and the usual about the intention is not to offend, etc.

The Ramayan is part of our cultural DNA.

It needed faith and humility for a film-maker to present it to a Gen Z audience, not the arrogance of a big budget spectacle and computer imagery.

If Om Raut wanted to use visuals from every Hollywood sci-fi fantasy possible, he could have come up with an original script. Why mess with an epic?

Reinterpretation is acceptable, welcome even, if there has to be a fresh perspective to share. But cherry blossoms in Sri Lanka, Hanuman speaking Bambaiya, the mythical Sone ki Lanka looking darkly Gothic, Raavan looking like a Bollywood dude...this is not modernisation, it is a travesty.

The film focuses on the story after Raghav (Prabhas), Janki (Kriti Sanon) and Shesh (Sunny Singh) accept banishment to the forest.

Raavan (Saif Ali Khan) receives a boon of invincibility from Lord Brahma (which sounds suspiciously like the one granted to Hiranyakashyap of Bhakht Prahlad infamy), and exits the Himalayas with 10 heads (that appear at will) and that HaHaHa laugh that is the hallmark of the Hindi movie villain and will probably require another century to wipe out.

The film loses its authenticity the minute asura s, looking like dementors, appear to attack Ram.

Later orcs, dragons and Jurassic era creatures populate the frames because Raut and his VFX team probably wanted to show the West that they can do fantasy as well as any comic book or amusement park-inspired Hollywood movie.

A foreign audience may or may not relate to this VFX-stuffed epic, but an Indian audience is likely to be put off with the liberties taken with the perception of the epic.

The visual of Raavan getting a python massage, or Lord Hanuman speaking like a Mumbai tapori (' ab lagegi tere baap ki ' to Indrajeet, son of Raavan); Indrajeet with full body tattoos like a WWF wrestler, Mughal era leather armour, and cannon fire in that period, is just some fevered creation of a team of computer wizards who should have seen Ram Rajya (1943) or even Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan for reference (or read Valmiki's text, as the disclaimer advises the audience to do).

For a story set in India, the exteriors are always dark with black clouds hovering overhead.

The interiors of Raavan's palace look like something of Game Of Thrones , which, along with Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, How To Train Your Dragon etc, is a major visual reference.

Everybody flies around shooting beams of light and fire at each other, and in the midst of all this computer-generated mayhem, the essence of the story is lost.

The actors are also dwarfed by the scale of the action.

Prabhas looks suitably serene, but even he is stumped when made to perform a dream sequence romantic song.

Saif Ali Khan looks like he walked in from the set of a different movie.

Sunny Singh, Kriti Sanon and Devdutta Nage (as Hanuman) do the best they can under the circumstances.

A couple of the familiar bhajan s are melodious, but mostly, the background score is ear-splitting.

In probably the only really effective scene in the film, Ram tells his army to fight not for him, but for their place in history. Then a bunch of film people come along in 2023 and distort it.

Adipurush is an EPIC DISAPPOINTMENT€¦ Just doesnt meet the mammoth expectations€¦ Director OmRaut had a dream cast and a massive budget on hand, but creates a HUGE MESS.

On the whole, Adipurush has poor merits, but its business will be far better because of the Hindutva wind blowing in the country, the scale of the mythological drama, and the initial craze which has been generated. It will not get the praises. Children will like the film.

Ratings: 2.5/5  Review By: Nikita Site:Bollywood Life

Watch Adipurush without too many expectations. Yes, it is visually beautiful and everything but it won’t leave a lasting impact. Don’t watch the film it you are looking to submerge yourself in mythology as it is all about the action.

Ratings: 3/5  Review By: Renuka Site:Times Of India

The VFX and visual appeal are passable if not impressive. With a run time of 3 hours, you wish the story wasnt as dependent on the special effects as it should have been on the nature of its celebrated characters and what set them apart. This ones a sincere attempt that gets a tad distracted by its ambition and desire to entertain.

The Ramayan is a part of our cultural DNA.If Om Raut wanted to use visuals from every Hollywood sci-fi fantasy possible, he could have come up with an original script. Why mess with an epic?Hanuman speaking Bombaiya, the mythical Sone Ki Lanka looking darkly Gothic, Raavan looking like a Bollywood dude… this is not modernisation. This is a travesty.

Though Adipurush can be safely deemed as one of Om Rauts biggest works, the film could surely have called for a better visual package. However, its a job that is moderately done. If not worse. All in all, we cant put a stamp on all the hype that Adipurush has been gathering, but it surely deserves one watch at the theatres.

Ratings: 3/5  Review By: 123Telugu  Site:123Telugu

On the whole, Adipurush is a modernized version of Ramayana that majorly benefits from the performances of Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, and Devdatte Nage. The movie has a neat first half and a below-par second half. The background score and songs come in handy, and they make it up for the substandard VFX works. Om Raut manages to infuse some good moments despite the familiar tale. The box office prospects of the movie will depend on how the family audiences will receive this updated version of the Indian epic. If you could ignore the slow-paced second half, Adipurush will be a decent watch this weekend.

Ratings: 2.75/5  Review By: Mirchi9 Site:Mirchi9

Adipurush is a Ramayan masala-fied. The first half is watchable for the epic tale that Ramayanam is despite the presentation. Adipurush s second half is exhausting, with a senseless Ravan in a mass retelling. Yet, the big-screen appeal saves the day, making it Ramayan 2.0 for over-the-top action lovers. Prabhas’ portrayal of Lord Rama could have been better.

Adipurush is VISUALLY STUNNING the BGM and fight sequences are brilliant Prabhas act as expected while KritiSanon shines with her performance SaifAliKhan as Ravan is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Overall , the needle stops somewhere in between ” One time watch ” to ” Good Watch “

Ratings: 3/5  Review By: Rambabu Site:Cinejosh

Altogether, Adipurush is the modern version of Ram’s valor in Ramayan. Om Raut embarked on a mission to enthrall Genex viewers by retelling Ram’s valor and virtue in Ramayan in a modern way by blending it with special effects like VFX and Graphics. He had taken a few cinematic liberties but it is fine as long as the message is driven. But for all his efforts, he missed the emotional connectivity in the narration by paying more attention to the graphics and VFX. He came up with an interesting story and with decent screenplay most of the time, he emerged successful most at times. Few sections and those obsessed with games like PubG will be connected to it, but it has to be seen how others will receive it. At times one gets a feeling that they are watching some caricatures and creatures out of the planet.

This is how you make a movie. Keep the animation good, the story engaging, mix elements of comedy and drama, and make it 3 hours long so that we get to be entertained for the amount we paid.

The makers of Adipurush should pee in a hole and drown in it. I hope we get to see more such great movies from India in future.

  1. Adipurush movie review & film summary (2023)

Honestly, the movie's rough computer graphics might eclipse all other considerations since there's so much bad green-screen image-compositing in "Adipurush," and it all looks cheap and uninspired.
