This full lesson includes a lesson PowerPoint with student activities and tasks included within the document. Answers are also included at each stage for student review. This lesson focusses on the functions of the xylem and phloem, transpiration and transportation in plants. There is no formal practical, but the lesson does include a teacher demonstration (using only a celery stick and some dye), alternatively a relevant YouTube video would suffice.
Included in the lesson:
Starter task focussing on plant nutrition Celery teacher demonstration and student predictions Xylem and phloem discussion Student information table task Transpiration Student exam question practice Demonstration reflection Keyword plenary activity
This lesson is ideal for students new to transportation in plants who haven’t been introduced to key terms such as xylem, phloem and transpiration.
The resource is a Powerpoint presentation with an accompanying PDF copy, so the resource can be edited and there is also a print-ready version for included worksheets. Please feel free to ask any further questions before purchasing.

Act One: Transpiration, the evaporation of water from the stomates of the leaf. Act Two: Water movement into the root from the soil. Act Three. Conduction of water up the stem. Water moves from the soil, into the outer layers of the root, then into the vascular cylinder and xylem. Outer root layer.

This drawing shows the general organization of phloem tissue. 14 Figure: 23.6 Title: The structure of xylem Caption: Xylem is a mixture of cell types, including parenchyma and sclerenchyma fibers (ground tissue) and two types of conducting cells, tracheids and vessel elements. Tracheids are thin with tapered, overlapping ends joined by pits.
Causes water to move through the endodermal cells into the xylem via the symplast pathway. Great! Symplast pathway = through the cytoplasm. Mineral ions found in the cytoplasm are pulled into the base of the xylem by the water. Root Pressure So, we have an increase in the concentration of mineral ions in the base of the xylem.
