I am Katrina Claire, a senior in high school. The quote was inspired by my enduring convinction that creativity is sparked by limitations or imperfections. I utilized the quote for myself.

Even in the absence the proper tools, one can create meaningful or beautiful work by embracing their limitations and continuing to create. It is similar to deciding; I may make a mistake or bad decision, but I accept it and use it as a lesson. I thus keep working in spite of the difficulties especially in my studies.

I am seventeen years old and residing at Poblacion, Badian, Cebu. My close friends and family are aware of my growing enthusiasm for my studies. Studying is one of my coping mechanisms for boredom, in addition to my interests and pastimes. Learning new things and having the opportunity to explore unpopular fields makes me happy and satisfied.

The other side of me is that I’m the type of person who loves and appreciates the arts and simple things in life. I enjoy making DIYs and photographing flowers, landscapes, and sunsets.

I can genuinely relate to this quote for it highlights that the development and progress are more significant than the current circumstances. It implies that our path is shaped by our direction and intent, emphasizing the importance of striving for improvement and purpose rather than focusing solely on where we are right now.

From a young age, I was passionate in learning or in my studies and performed well in school. As I approached adolescence, I developed a keen interest in technology and computers, which stoked my ambition to work in fields like cybersecurity or software development.

However, when it came time to select a senior high school strand, my choice was greatly influenced by my teachers, friends, and family. My choices were ICT (Information Computer Technology) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In the end, I went with my second choice, the STEM strand. At first, I was hesitant because I found science difficult and was afraid I wouldn’t blend in with my new classmates, but I consider the fact that I do like engineering too.

My family encouraged me to think about more conventional career routes rather than pursuing my passion in other fields because they stressed the value of stability and job security. I began to doubt my goals as a result of this viewpoint. Additionally, my friends expressed interest in well-liked fields like engineering and business, which increased the pressure to follow their lead. The idea that I should follow a more traditional path was reinforced by my teachers, who were encouraging but also pointed me in the direction of professions they thought would offer more prospects.

I ultimately decided to go with the science strand instead of my first choice, which was technology. My passion in the tech industry was rekindled when I realized how technology relates to my present coursework.

I’ve learned from this experience to balance the expectations of others around me with my interests and goals.

The influences and factors.

While choosing my strand, I came across numerous influences and factors that influenced my decision. Some of this greatly impacted my decision-making.

* Education . I consider my educational background to be one of the factors that influenced my decision.

* Advice from relatives and friends . My friends and family hold me to high standards because they see me succeeding academically. They provide me guidance and encouragement, but my awareness of it prevents me from pursuing my dream strand to the fullest. Also, my older sister, who studied STEM in the past, suggested that I follow this line of study.

* Occupation of parents . My parents’ jobs influence how I view different professions and encourage me to pursue options that I believe will benefit my parents.

* Availability and Strand Offers . Even though I’m not interested in my present strand, it can give me a lot of opportunities.

* Peer influence . I can’t deny that this influenced my choice. By talking about threads, common interests, and social dynamics, I was inspired to take particular routes.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) offers the thrill of exploring new concepts and solving complex problems, which can be incredibly rewarding. Pursuing this strand can be both challenging and exciting. For many students, this strand can lead to a variety of career options in industries that are becoming more and more relevant in the labor market today. It fosters the growth of critical abilities that are beneficial in any line of work, such as teamwork, problem-solving, and analytical thinking.

Additionally, learning STEM courses stimulates curiosity, inventiveness, and a deeper understanding of the world. I can conclude that STEM disciplines are significant forces of innovation and development, resulting in modern technology and advances that improve our daily lives.

The quotation emphasizes that having extraordinary skills from birth is not the only factor in talent or genius; it also heavily depends on the dedication to cultivate those skills by perseverance and hard work.

This is what I realized since our class started. My classmates and I don’t have the same level and ways of learning but what I noticed is that with dedication and efforts or hardwork, each of us can do what we want and sometimes we are able to learn without any difficulties.

Though ideas might be sparked by creative bursts, the quote suggests that perseverance and strong work are necessary to make those ideas become reality.

One of the most important choices I made in my time in high school was to pursue the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) strand. Through a mix of coursework, interesting projects, and worthwhile extracurricular activities, I have quickly developed knowledge and abilities that may influenced not only my academic trajectory but also my future goals.

I am now considering a career in engineering, driven by a passion for innovation and problem-solving. The foundational skills and experiences I have gained will serve me well as I pursue higher education in this field.

My experiences now in the STEM strand have been transformative, providing me with academic challenges, hands-on learning opportunities, and the chance to develop essential skills. I met people whom I called family and friends. Senior High School is two years (Grade 11 and Grade 12) of specialized upper secondary education and will require you to pick among different tracks upon enrollment.  Your chosen track and strand will reflect on the subjects you will take.

This qualitative descriptive research explored the perspectives of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) senior high school students in a public secondary school in Zambales, Philippines on their reasons why they enrolled in STEM and their intent to pursue relevant career. A total of 20 Grade 12 students were purposively selected as participants of the research. The participants were interviewed using a validated structured interview guide. The recorded interviews were individually transcribed to arrive at an extended text. The extended texts were reviewed to generate themes and significant statements. The paper found out that senior high school students are generally interested in the field related to biology. The alignment to the preferred course in college is the primary reason of the participants for enrolling in STEM. Almost all the students wanted to pursue STEM-related careers after their university graduation. Further, personal aspiration is the main reason for the participants to pursue STEM-related professions. The study recommends that senior high schools may design various activities during the career week. These activities may include possible career paths in STEM-related courses, students' career and motivation, and their career aptitude. Teachers may also infuse innovative pedagogies for better STEM instruction. For the students to have more interest in science, it is recommended that STEM teachers undergo retooling or pursue advanced studies. Senior high schools may conduct career guidance seminars for the students to guide them on what strands they should take. The Department of Education (DepEd) may support the implementation of different programs regarding students’ career preparation. This program will help the students to be more aware on what career path they wanted to pursue, and to avoid pressures from peers. Schools may advocate a collaborative, authentic and goal-oriented learning environment with respect to the demand of Industrial Revolution 4.0.

This study uses data collected at two National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) programs in Connecticut and Mississippi to investigate high school students’ perceptions and preferences about education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Family background has a significant impact on a high school student's interest in STEM, as shown during the student recruitment stage and by the analysis of the students' college education plans prepared upon graduation from the two NSTI programs. The building exercise and competition instrument is the most effective among the few examined, while passive learning is not what young people prefer when briefly introduced in the two NSTI programs.

STEM is a curriculum which is based on the idea of education the students in four specific disciplines -science, technology, engineering and mathematics, in an approach which it is based on real-life applications.

This looks into the basic information about the student's course preference, the degree program's availability, and employability in the Philippines and among ASEAN members. In particular, this study will answer the following questions: (1) What is the status of high school students in choosing a degree program (2) What are the degree programs enrolled by the students in the Visayas, in terms of courses offered, number of students enrolled? (3) How prepared are the Philippine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs)? (4) What are Higher education programs or initiatives for international students? (5) What are the PQF (Philippine Quality Framework) and AQRF (ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework)? and (6) What policy recommendations can be made based on the findings? This is a mixed method of both qualitative and quantitative. A combination of research designs is also used to answer the statement of the problem. At the same time, some questions about the problem may be answered by a mixed research design, which uses a survey questionnaire and is supplemented by descriptive analysis, which may come from published articles. Students living in the city prefer business subjects since they are the most viable for them as there are more business opportunities in the city than in the Province. The family upbringing and history could also factor in the decision aside from the students' likes. The student's grade is the biggest factor, which normally shows their preference. Thus, the higher the grade of a particular subject, the more it interests students. It means that the subject having a higher grade is what they also like. STEM is those who are good in science and math subjects, while HUMSS are those who are good in history values and often possess warm behavior.

This study was grounded in the social cognitive career theoretical framework (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994). The purpose of this four-year longitudinal study was to examine the factors that may have contributed to students’ motivation to develop STEM interest during secondary school years. The participants in our study were 9th- 11th grade high school students from a large K-12 college preparatory charter school system, Harmony Public Schools (HPS) in Texas. We utilized descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses to carry out the study. STRAND in Senior High Explained

To foster lifelong learners, prepare graduates for postsecondary education, middle-level skill development, employment, and entrepreneurship, and provide ample time for concept and skill mastery, the K–12 Program encompasses Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education , comprising 6 years of primary education, 4 years of Junior High School (JHS), and 2 years of Senior High School (SHS). Key phases in the K–12 Program comprise Kindergarten through Grade 3, Grades 4–6, Grades 7–10 (JHS), and Grades 11–12 (SHS). The program provides a total of 13 years of basic education.

Learners who complete the two years of senior high school will be better prepared for the workforce, entrepreneurship, higher education (college), or skill development (more tech-voc training).

STRAND in Senior High

Two years of specialized upper secondary education make up Senior High School (SHS), where learners may choose a specialization based on their skills, interests, and what is available in the institution. The subjects that a learner will take in SHS will depend on their chosen career track. There are four tracks available to SHS learners: Academic, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL), Sports, and Arts and Design.

There are four strands in the academic track: Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) Strand, Science, Technology, Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS), Strand Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Strand, and General Academic Strand (GAS)

Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) Strand

The ABM Strand is geared for individuals who aspire to pursue professions in business, entrepreneurship, or other similar fields, or who aspire to enroll in business-related courses in postsecondary education.

How to Choose the Right Strand in Senior High School

While I was checking a Facebook group, I’ve seen too many posts of students asking how to choose the right strand in senior high school. They’re all wondering if there are any tips to choose the right strand.

“Should I choose ABM or STEM? Which will give me a better future? Will I secure a job with a higher salary?”

While jobs and compensation are good factors in choosing a strand in senior high school , there are more important points that you must consider!

Which strand in senior high school will give you the best experience?

What do I mean by this? Studying itself is a beautiful experience. You are in a hurry to get out from school but you’ll realize how these experiences can hone you as a person.

Why are you so worried about the future? Your experiences today will help you build that tomorrow! When you choose the right strand, try asking these to yourself.

  • Which strand are you most interested in? Every strand offers specific skills and subjects. When you were in junior high school, were you into Science and Technology? What about numbers? Do you feel excitement when calculating or managing people? Maybe, you love presenting speech and communication is your asset. You see, you have to understand first what you like.
  • What skills or subjects do you excel? If you’re not subjective, you can try an objective approach. Look at your subjects and previous tests. Which of them did you have a high score? As they say, you have to know your strengths and pursue them. Maximize your gifts!
  • What feedback do you hear from your seniors?  When you were a freshman, did you make friends to your juniors or seniors? What did they say about their chosen strand in senior high school? Were they happy in their chosen field? You can always ask for suggestions.
  • Which strand is a stepping stone to your dream?  Did you have any childhood dream? It’s time to pursue it by choosing the best strand in senior high school.

What if you like to choose a strand that offers the best jobs?

As I mentioned earlier, I do not really think that the job itself is the only consideration. The truth is, we will all end up building our own lives, career and empire. But if this is the only consideration you have, you can try the following:

  • Look for jobs with high demand. There was a year in which the nurse was really in demand but right now, anything related to IT and digital marketing is the trend. Why not look for articles that provide a glimpse of good jobs in the next future.
  • Decide whether you want to work in the Philippines or abroad.  This is a great factor when looking for jobs. I have a friend who wanted to live in Japan. Every step she did was related to teaching since that country is in need of English teachers. What if you want to work in the Middle East or Europe? Look for the best jobs in those countries.
  • Determine the lifestyle you want. Before, we have the idea of employees staying in the office with a schedule of 8AM – 5PM. However, we have many options right now! Some jobs have flexible schedule, and offer work from home. Try researching for work that might give you these options.

Just remember that choosing the right strand in senior high school is one of the many decisions you will make as you grow older.

Whatever you choose, never regret! Make the most out of it, and enjoy your experiences. Cherish your friends and don’t waste your time assessing whether you made the right decision or not!
