ADMN 404 is a three-credit required course in all business degree programs offered at Athabasca University. This course is intended to build on everything else you have learned about management to date. That’s why you are encouraged to take this course as late as possible in your program.

What sets this course apart from all others is its focus on entire organizations and, more specifically, their success or failure. So, whereas marketing courses help you understand the marketing function and accounting courses help you make sense of an organization’s accounts, this course draws upon your knowledge from many other courses to examine how and whether an organization can be successful.

In ADMN 404 , you are asked to play the role of owner/CEO. If you become an owner/CEO someday, this course can help you in that role. But even if you never become an owner/CEO, this course can benefit you as a manager/employee when you are asked to contribute to your organization's strategic planning efforts. It can also benefit you as an investor as you try to choose the companies that are most likely to succeed. Simply put, this course will help you to better understand what makes organizations successful.

The report begins by outlining the conceptualization of Uber as a business in the introduction and how it grew into a successful company with its ridesharing app. Generally, Uber has had a successful growth. In the mandate chapter, the report analyses the mission and vision statements, values and ethics and conducts a stakeholder analysis of Uber. It was noted that Uber possesses a welldefined and rounded mandate that reflects the general direction of the business. The report examines the internal and external environments of Uber to determine its competitive positioning and factors affecting its operations and performance. It was noted that Uber has come under both global and localized competitive pressure. Traditional taxis and authorities have filed legal motions arguing against Uber for unfair business practices. The media has also reported on negative incidences that hurt Uber's brand perception and value. Strategic options for Uber were canvassed. The company must opt for new competitive strategies to remain relevant and satisfy various stakeholders in the market. Uber needs product differentiation and risk management to address its current recurring problems and grow. UBER’S STRATEGIC REPORT 3 Introduction/Company Overview Uber was conceived in 2008 by its founders Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick on the basis of an inconvenience that is critical in explaining the mandate of the company (Smith, 2016). In 2009, the Uber application was then born out of the idea of hailing a taxi safely easily, and reliably from the comfort of one's smartphone. Ever since the convenience of the Uber ridesharing application has gained credibility and dominated the cab industry. By 2014, Uber was valued at $18.2 billion well above Hertz and Avis which were the biggest taxi companies in the world, operated in over 36 countries and 130 cities, and revenues set to double within six months (Smith, 2016). However, the promise of Uber's exponential growth is facing formidable challenges. Incumbent taxi services have complained that Uber is circumventing business operating regulations thus unfairly competing in the market. Such complaints have forced regulatory authorities in various cities in the world to give “cease to desist” orders against Uber. Further, upstarts such as Lyft have ramped up competitive pressure (Bugador, 2019). Lyft's business model makes it a low-cost option more than Uber. Further, Lyft has introduced reputational safeguards and driver support systems that make the brand more advanced. In the next chapter, the report examines the mandate of Uber in the ride-sharing industry, then reviews its internal and external analysis before offering strategic options that the company can pursue. This report is meant to offer strategic options that can reposition Uber back into the vision of its founders. Therefore, the report will seek to address the strategic challenges that Uber is facing and how they can be addressed to increase competitive advantages. However, the strategic evaluation and options offered are based on a few industry reports that reduce its reliability. To improve the quality of analysis and recommendations, it is critical that further UBER’S STRATEGIC REPORT 4 research be based on several top valued independent and company commissioned reports to triangulate the findings. Mandate Mission and Purpose Analysis The mission Statement of Uber states that it seeks to offer “Transportation as reliable as running water, everywhere for everyone” (Vargas-Hernández, 2020). Uber's mission statement is a perfect actionable verb for its business model of transport services. The emphasis is on limitless services and continuous reliable experiences universally from which the company draws its strategic business model. In the market, Uber's mission statement is translated into the diversification of services for instance the establishment of UberX services to cater to the economy segment and Uber Comfort for the premium segment. Vision and Goals Analysis The vision statement of Uber states that “We ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion” (Marin et al., 2020). Uber's vision statement is a testament to its influence that transcends just transportation to impact core life processes. Uber ignites opportunities. The convenience associated with Uber's transport business model encourages more social interactions between people and places thereby opening up opportunities, solving problems, and supporting businesses. For instance, Uber as a team app for companies/clients to manage expenseless rides. In this context, Uber would have set the world in motion. Values and Ethics Analysis The core values of Uber states that “we build globally, we live locally, we are customerobsessed, we celebrate differences, we do the right thing, we act like owners, we persevere, we value ideas over hierarchy, we make big bold bets” (Harrison et al., 2020). The company UBER’S STRATEGIC REPORT 5 presents itself as a progressive, reliable, and dynamic ride-sharing transport brand.
