HOW TO APPROACH YOUR LIFE ORIENTATION EXAMINATION

  • Section A and B of the question paper are compulsory and must be answered by all the candidates. These two sections demand clearly identified Life Orientation CAPS content, recalling knowledge-based, learned content, and moreover, require the ability to demonstrate understanding, interpretation, examination and application of knowledge to new situations . Ensure that you answer all the questions in these two sections. Do not leave any questions blank.
  • Underline the instructional verbs and key words/phrases in each question to determine what is required in the answer.
  • Marks for TWO to THREE-mark questions are awarded as follows: ONE mark for a statement/opinion, ONE mark for the motivation/reason, and ONE mark for the outcome/summary.
  • Section B is compulsory and consists of TWO 15-mark questions. It includes short open-ended, scenario-based, source-based and case study questions of which learners must display understanding of current, real life issues affecting the youth and society at large, and give possible solutions. All answers must be written in full sentences.
  • Section C consists of THREE 15-mark or FOUR 10-mark choice questions of which learners will be expected to answer TWO or THREE respectively . The total in Section C is 30 marks. Responses must be in the form of paragraphs / short essays and will entail solving problems, making decisions, giving advice, making recommendations, critically discussing/evaluating/ assessing an issue.

Life orientation, test booklet, guidelines for setting the june and november controlled tests, dear teacher, included in this test booklet are various past question papers. these papers are meant, to serve as a bank of questions that you may use to develop your own papers, depending on how far you have come with content coverage. the papers may not be, used as is since the structure of the exams has changed. instead of an exam we now, speak of a controlled test. below are simple guidelines to follow when setting your test:, section a: 20 marks section b: 40 marks section c: 40 marks, all questions are compulsory all questions are, learners will answer two 20-, mark questions out of three,  a short source may be used to, contextualise some of the,  the questions must include a, combination of three or, more types of questions from, the list below:, o multiple choice, o one-word responses, (list, state, provide, give), o definitions, o short explanations, (why, how, describe, explain,,  questions should test, understanding and factual,  responses should be short,,  mark allocation for the, questions should range, between 1 – 2 mark,  learners will answer two, 20-mark questions. short, open-ended questions could, o scenario based, o source-based, o case study, o illustration,  questions should be, knowledge-based, from, information learners have, acquired from the life, orientation content in the,  learners should display,, present and apply, knowledge and skills gained, from the life orientation,  mark allocation for questions, in this section could range, between 2 – 4 marks in total, per question.,  questions will predominantly, focus on the application of, knowledge and skills,  a short text/diagram/, data/graphs/cartoons can be, provided as a stimulus,  learners will be required to:, o explain/examine/, analyse/evaluate/, critically discuss a topic., o make decisions and give, o provide recommendations, o make conclusions., o solve problems,  learners should provide, responses through extended, writing of descriptive paragraphs, or short essays.,  mark allocation for sub, questions in this section could, range between 4 – 8 marks in, total per question., should learners be required to write a short essay, the structure of the essay would include an, introduction, elaboration/body and conclusion, based on the specific key concepts in the, time: 2 hours, this examination paper consists of 8 pages., please turn over, instructions:, june examination 2019, 1. read all instructions carefully before answering the questions., 2. answer the questions as follows:,  section a (20 marks) and b (30 marks) are compulsory.,  section c (30 marks) consists of 3 questions – answer only two, questions from this section., 3. write neatly and legibly., 4. number your answers correctly., 5. use the allocated time effectively., section a (20 marks), answer all the questions from this section., when making a career choice, it is important to consider the following:, a. your upbringing, b. your capabilities, c. your skills, d. your interests, 1.1 freedom of religion, belief and opinion means:, a. you can gather together with other people, hold a demonstration and picket., b. you have the right to be treated equally at work and work in a healthy, environment., c. you cannot be arrested without a good reason, a charge and a trial., d. you can have your own opinions and views; (3),  how physical activity can improve school achievement. (4),  describe four different aspects of fitness which should be included in an, exercise programme and give an examples of each aspect (4x2), time: 1½ hours, this examination paper consists of 7 pages., june memorandum 2019, common paper june 2019, section a (subtotal = 20 marks), question 1 question 2 question 3, 1.1 b √ 1.2 t √ 1.3 self-knowledge, /awereness √, 1.1 b √ 1.2 false – baccalaureus, 1.3 human trafficking √, 1.1 b √ 1.2 false – an assertive, person is one who stands, up for his or her rights in a, respectful manner. √√, 1.3 south african human, rights commission -, 1.1 a √ 1.3 environmental justice, 1.1 a √ 1.3 values √, 2.1 a set idea that people have about what someone or something is like, especially, an idea that is wrong. √√, people that have a fixed idea about what other people are capable of and who, should do what type of work., e. primary school teachers must be ladies √, man should not do domestic work √, woman may earn less than man for similar work √ (2x2), or any relevant answer, listen with your ears, but also with your eyes as you watch the speaker/s and, see how they are talking. √√, make notes by writing only the keywords so that you are still able to listen, properly. √√, keep on asking yourself questions such as: what does this means where, does this fit into what i already know √√, in your own word, repeat what the speaker has said to check if you have, understood. √√, any other relevant (2), make summaries and learn them by repeating it while you are walking,, standing in queues or bathing. √√, close your eyes and make a picture of what you are trying to remember. √√, set up your own test or mock exam and try to answer the questions. √√, 3 setting goals. √ by setting goals you will create proper targets and, won’t be able to fall of schedule. √, draw up a study timetable or schedule.√ having a timetable help you to divide, subjects into time frames and to keep to that schedule. √, take regular short breaks.√ make time for breaks in your schedule to do, stretching and relaxation exercises. √, keep all the things that help you study in one place, √ so that you don’t waste, time that can be used for studying. √, get rid of time wasters. √ keep away from those things that stop you from, studying in order to get all the work done as planned. √ (3x2), total section b (30),  while people live in poverty, they cannot reach their full potential, can’t choose, that they want to eat, career, education etc.,  poverty creates hardship and people do not have the same choices as those, living in better circumstances,  poverty affects the ability of people to be better or to choose where they live,, study or work,  living in poverty creates crime and people are not safe to, any two marks for two good answers. one mark for statement and one mark for, qualification of statement. 2x, impact of the drought and access to water on the poor;,  poor people can not buy water if there is no water,  drought can lead to job lost and poor economic growth – impact poor people,  leads to undernourishment and malnutrition, illnesses,  some people have little/limited access to water.,  when one tap is shared by many people and used for drinking and washing, the, water can get polluted., any three relevant answers for one mark each 3, practical suggestions for each of the four groups for 2 marks each, community: community gardens; prevent overpopulation (2), government: prevent overpopulation, encourage entrepreneurship, give start-up loans,, restrict social grants to 6 months, child-grant to only 2 children, (2), individual: work hard in school, grow own veggies, volunteer, (2), businesses: skills training, help intrapreneurs, (2), benefits of participating in community work.

awareness and boosts self-esteem) leads to be confident about study and
