Marketing Activities for Personal Statements

This article is for those applying for Marketing undergraduate degrees at UK universities through the UCAS system.

For applying to UK universities, it is important that the majority of the personal statement is made up of “supercurricular activities”. These are activities, undertaken outside of school, that directly relate to the subject which you would like to study at university.

Here is a list of some supercurricular activities for marketing:

With podcasts, I recommend focussing on a particular episode and your personal takeaways, rather than only generally mention that you listen to the podcast without further detail.

  • The Cambridge Marketing Podcast.
  • Marketing Week.
  • Other relevant marketing podcasts.

Essay competitions

You may be able to find relevant essay competitions. These may be essay competitions for related subjects such as economics or business.

In this case, make sure to choose an essay question to answer that relates to marketing. This means you may need to be selective about the choice of essay competition.

Examples of essay competitions include the RES Economics essay competition or the King’s Lab entrepreneurship essay competition.

Behavioural economics / behavioural science books

You can find books on these areas, relating to the so-called “behavioural biases” that consumers and other groups may face.

Again with books, I’d recommend picking a particular chapter or idea to go into detail on and offer your own personal takeaway, rather than talking about the book generally.

  • Thinking Fast and Slow – a book by Kahneman
  • Or another book called Nudge by Thaler and Sunstein.
  • There are several other books about behavioural economics.

Papers can be difficult to read. So another option is to look up a marketing academic on YouTube, and find a long lecture by them.

For example Andrew Stephen has a lecture here on the future of marketing .

There is also Philip Kotler on marketing here .

Hands-on marketing activity

You may have tried your hand at marketing. This could be for a business and could involve design or communication. Mentioning this kind of activity can be a great addition to a personal statement.

You could even read academic papers where you have something interesting to say about it. For instance, an interesting insight that you think could be applied elsewhere, a new thought beyond what the authors say, something you agree or disagree with, something you recognise from your own experience etc.

You can find papers for instance here:

  • You could sort a famous journal by its most read or most cited articles. For example in the Journal of Marketing , you can find: “ The rise of new technologies in marketing: a framework and outlook ”.
  • You could seek out articles from a particular academic.

You can also find “research features” or shorter versions of the full academic article that may be more accessible. For instance:

  • You can find a lot on marketing at the link here . Some of these may be behind paywalls or have limits on number of reads.
  • Summaries of academic papers can also be found for economics on the CEPR Voxeu website. For marketing, you will need to be selective.

Final thoughts

This is just a sample of the types of activities you can include in your personal statement. Feel free to look for additional activities beyond this list – this list is meant as inspiration, not for you just to copy the activities.

Moreover, make use of your interests within marketing. If you are interested in online marketing, focus some of your activities on this. Or if you are interested in marketing and design, discuss supercurricular activities relevant to this.

Hope this helps and good luck with your university application!

Business and marketing degree personal statement example (1a)

This is a real personal statement written by a student for their university application. It might help you decide what to include in your own. There are lots more examples in our .

When I reminisce about my school days, I look back with pleasure at the Business Studies classes I took at GCSE and A-level. I always found the Classes extremely interesting. My attention was hooked and my understanding of business grew as we progressed our way through the course. My enjoyment of Business Studies can be seen from my exam grades of which I am extremely proud.

At 18 years old I was keen to go out in the world of work and learn more about differentworking environments. I had jobs from working in nightclubs and promotions to working in face-to-face event based sales. These experiences gave me a chance to see first hand how the theories I had learned in Business Studies applied in practice. I fell ill in December 2005, leaving me unable to complete my A Level study. I took advantage of my misfortune by working in marketing where I had to promote products from business to consumers while learning how to build and manage my own team from scratch. At first I found the idea of being responsible for people quite daunting, but I saw it as a challenge and invaluable experience and therefore fell into the responsibility comfortably. I also worked in retail for a brief period; this faced me with different challenges and a different working environment. In September 2006 my health improved and I returned to education and I am currently completing an Access to Business Studies course. I am also doing A Level French as Irecognise the benefits of having more then one language in the business world. I want to be multilingual and as long as time permits, I will endeavour to learn as many languages as possible. I am also keen to learn about other cultures and have experienced life in Ghana, where I was able to see life from another perspective. In 2003 I lived in America as part ofa student exchange programme and I hope that one day I will have the chance to travel around the world and experience more cultures. Although work is important to me, I recognise the need for rest. I enjoy listening, playing and watching live music. I attend live performances regularly. My love for music stems from the age of eight where I first picked up the recorder and clarinet. I developed my music skills by learning how to play the guitar and the piano. I am eager to learn how to play the drums. Socialising is a part of my life. I like to get involved with campaigns and groups as I feel it is a great opportunity to interact with different people from all walks of life. I regularly volunteer for Amnesty International and Love Music Hate Racism. I feel that I will settle down well at university as I am friendly and confident and my ability to work in a team will enable me to interact well with other people. Having studied drama I have an interest in acting. I often go to the theatre and would like to pursue this interest at university in my free time. With my varied interests I am looking forward to the social, as well as the academic opportunities at university.

After university, I hope to work in Marketing and Advertising. I am an outgoing, articulate and keen person and feel these qualities would shine. Every time I watch an advert on television or see one in a newspaper I immediately know this is what I want to do in life. The idea of having a product to launch and a target audience to appeal to excites me. I always think of creative ways a product can be marketed. I am an enthusiastic learner, I know what I want and I am prepared to work hard to achieve my ambition. I had a job where the wage was commission based; this made me a self-motivated person with the determination to reach the goals I placed in front of me.

I believe that given the academic opportunity, coupled with my valuable work experience, I will be set firmly on the right path to a successful career.

Fashion marketing personal statement example 5.

I am fascinated with the way the Fashion Marketing industry has such a strong influence over society’s choice of styling, and how it can influence current and future trends through different channels.

With the recent instability brought about by the recession, it has been intriguing to see the adaptable strategies required by retailers to maintain positive exposure in a volatile economy, which has only served to heighten my interest in this field.

Fashion is something that never fails to captivate me. It is an ever changing cycle that uses influences from a previous era, modifies them and creates something new. An example is one of my favourite trends; the Androgynous look. This has been apparent since the 1920’s but only recently has men’s tailoring dominated the runway.

Since Autumn/Winter 2011 designers such as Yves Saint Laurent have led the trend with tailored trousers, tuxedo jackets and brogues for women. Spring 2012 is set to see the return of flared jeans and trousers from the 1970’s. Clothing is no longer just a commodity. Fashion has evolved into an expression of personality; it gives a sense of belonging within a group and defines people’s cultures.

My initial interest in Fashion and Marketing began when I worked in a clothing department of a major retailer. I particularly enjoyed the visual merchandising of new stock for each seasonal change, promoting the new range, and making it more aesthetically stimulating to the consumers.

I developed a basic understanding of how a business attracts its customers, distributes its product and uses promotions to increase revenue. The role also provided me with essential customer service skills.

I continued with marketing projects while at University, working for a national promotions company publicising events. I regularly varied my marketing strategies to maintain a high level of attendance at the events and constantly attract new customers.

I have previously embarked on a degree in Criminology. While I learnt valuable lessons about time management and organisation from this experience, I felt it was not the career path for me and ceased my studies after two years.

Since then, I have acquired much life experience through traveling and working in new industries, which has given me the maturity and aptitude to take on the responsibility of combining employment and higher education.

At present I am working as a Flight Attendant working within a large team. The role requires adaptability and quick thinking to meet the needs of the customers. I am often required to work long, unsociable hours whilst maintaining high levels of safety and customer satisfaction.

A significant portion of my role is performance related meeting daily targets. Sales techniques are a mandatory skill and some of the techniques I use include; public announcements, link selling items and the use of displays.

Although I enjoy working as a flight attendant, career progression is limited, and most importantly, it does not allow me to focus on my interest in the fashion industry.

I am due to start the e-learning short course ‘An Introduction to Fashion Marketing’ also offered by the London College of Fashion in April.

This will give me invaluable knowledge into understanding fashion marketing, research, branding and distribution. I am keen to develop an insight into further techniques, particularly those specific to fashion, that take into account a range of target audiences.

I have carefully considered the elements of time and finance required at this stage and I am willing to commit fully to academic life in order to fulfill my ambition.

A successful biology personal statement

University of Southampton admissions tutor, Dr Malcom East, outlines two key ingredients he would like to see evidenced in your biological sciences statement:

You understand something about the course you’re applying for, with a realistic perception of what it involves.

You’re enthusiastic about the subject and can show some commitment to it. You can demonstrate this by writing about your wider reading, Extended Project, work experience or any other way you have engaged with biological science beyond the syllabus.

Your commitment and appetite for the subject

Admissions tutors at the University of Birmingham are looking out for something you’ve done, or something you think, that conveys your commitment to the subject:

  • What topics do you find particularly intriguing?
  • Have you done anything interesting or unusual that has involved engaging with the subject beyond the syllabus, or through your extracurricular interests or voluntary work?
  • Have you been on an interesting field course or visited a university laboratory and learned something from it?

A paragraph where you explain what you gained from one or two interests or activities like these would be very effective. Remember to explain things in your own words, ensure it has a good structure, and steer clear of poor grammar and spelling.

Cardiff University’s selectors are no different. They want you to demonstrate a commitment, motivation, and determination to further your knowledge in biosciences, along with any experience or other non-academic interests that highlight your personal qualities in general. They also want to see from your statement that you can communicate this in a way that’s concise and coherent.

See our in-depth guide to studying biological sciences for some inspiration.

Conveying your enthusiasm

Dr Devlin also told us all their applicants are invited for interview and 'the personal statement is the basis of that interview'. So he recommends that you write about things you would like them to ask you about.

So if you're fascinated by the machinery of the cell, human health or disease, the natural environment, any other specific aspects of biology, or just the science of living organisms in general, then make sure you include it. By reflecting on one or two of these interests in your statement, you’re likely to make a strong impression.

It’s good to include some non-academic content

Admissions tutors at King’s College London like to see an element in your statement that reflects on your general reading, debating, contributing to school, college or community life, or any cultural or sporting interests, as they are keen for you to continue this at uni and to contribute to the 'vitality of the College community'.

However, if your home or personal circumstances mean it has been difficult to extend your knowledge or experiences outside of school or college, don’t worry. As Cardiff points out, universities will usually be sympathetic to this.

How critical is the personal statement?

If you achieve the required grades and can genuinely demonstrate that you’ve got the necessary enthusiasm and commitment, then you should be in a strong position. Your personal statement, in combination with your academic reference, will be very important for demonstrating those qualities.

If your statement clearly shows you have also applied for a clinical programme like medicine, veterinary science or dentistry, that lack of commitment to biology is likely to be a turn-off to some universities, including University of Bristol. However, others take a different view on that, or may consider a separate statement sent directly to them. Do research this in advance!

According to University of Southampton, it’s if you don’t quite get the grades you need that the personal statement becomes especially critical. If you find yourself in this position, then your statement could turn out to be your lifeline on results day. As Dr East put it: 'If we have a few places left, then the statement will probably determine whether you’re in or out'.
