Fostering collaboration and creative thinking through extra-curricular challenges with primary and secondary students [ ].…The research employed a correlational design using quantitative ANOVA to explore relationships between thinking processes and collaboration in producing creative answers. The data (N = 1445 teams) was collected from the Australian and New Zealand teams of seven students participating in a five-minute spontaneous divergent thinking challenge in 2019. Design for good: The Philosophical alignment of the arts and crafts, modernist, and handmade movements

The early 1990's marked the beginning of the digital age when a transformation in graphic design technology and practice began to occur. For many graphic designers, the tactile approach to assembling a composition was abandoned as computer software advanced. While this shift in production technique saved time, it contributed (in many cases) to an unfortunate waning of interest in skill and craft. Perhaps as a reaction to this technologically- reliant era of design, many contemporary artists have returned to traditional processes (letterpress, etching, hand-rendered illustration, hand-written type) in order to reconnect with viewers and with their own work. This `Handmade' era of design of the past decade or so has endeavored to accomplish something that other movements have as well; that is, to use their design as a tool for good. This thesis has focused upon the notion--shared by the Arts and Crafts, Modernist, and Handmade movements-- that design can (and should) be used as a democratic tool for social, cultural, and environmental reform; and that designers can enact positive change in the lives of users by creating thoughtful, quality products.

The thesis is an opportunity to enrich the field of design with an original contribution. It may exist as a written document, designed artifact, multimedia presentation or any combination of the above. Graduate thesis projects have covered a wide range of topics and reflect both the interests of the student and the concerns of the program with forward-looking investigations into the professional, technological and social questions facing the discipline. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the significant resources of the University to further their interests while extending the influence of design into the larger community. Recent topics for thesis projects have included the history of African-American design (Envisioning Black Aesthetics in Graphic Design), Asian “cute” design (Cute Culture), interactive journalism (Interactive Structures for Accessing News Online), explorations in typography and letter forms as they change over time, and design criteria (Analysis of the Holocaust Museum Across Design Media).

During the Spring Quarter of their first year, each student is responsible for developing a proposal and organizing a thesis committee. The committee must consist of at least two Design faculty, one of whom is the Chair. Students work closely with their Chair and committee throughout the project. In the final three quarters of study, degree candidates produce a substantial thesis document and/or exhibition that can be publicly presented. In addition, students are required to give a public presentation on their thesis prior to graduation.
