A HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing is your pathway to a career as an Enrolled Nurse (EN) in Australia. ENs work under the supervision of Registered Nurses (RNs) and are responsible for a range of care to support the health needs of patients. This could include medication administration, frontline health assessments, wound care and responding to emergency situations.

With a HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge required to confidently provide person-centred care in a wide range of professional health care settings.

The below information outlines all you need to know to get started on the track for your new career. It covers study dates, fees, course outlines, information on how to apply and any necessary entry requirements you may need.

The HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing is delivered over 18 months in our training rooms at 182 Macquarie Street, Hobart.

The 18 months is comprised of face to face, online learning, and structured industry placement (12 weeks in total). This course requires 2 days per week of face to face learning (9am to 3pm) at our training rooms at 182 Macquarie Street, Hobart, plus the equivalent of 2-3 days per week self-directed learning at home.

There are 25 units in this course - 20 core units and 5 electives. To achieve this qualification, students must have also completed a minimum of 400 hours of successful clinical placement in the aged care, acute care and mental health settings. If you have previous work experience and underpinning knowledge in this industry, you may wish to apply for Recognised Prior Learning.

Students are welcome to use our library facilities during business hours Monday to Friday.

Before you begin your course application (submitting an expression of interest), make sure you meet the requirements listed below:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or above
  • Applicants are required to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment with HERC. In addition, applicants will need to satisfy the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language entry requirement* prior to acceptance into this course.
  • Applicants must provide evidence of a valid National Police Check
  • Applicants must provide evidence of their valid working with vulnerable people registration/card
  • Physical ability to demonstrate manual handling skills applicable as a compulsory component of the course and the clinical care workplace
  • COVID-19 Vaccinations: Received your first, second and booster (or have evidence of booking to receive boosters) of a TGA approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccination prior to course commencement
  • Influenza Vaccination: Received prior to Aged Care placement
  • Other Vaccinations requested for Acute placements
  • Inherent requirements for nursing qualifications describe a range of cognitive, behavioural, and physical capabilities which are required for the delivery of safe care nursing

There are no prerequisites for this qualification. However, entry into this course will be highly competitive. Our enrolment team will be using selection activities based on:

  • Evidence of preparation for Diploma level studies (academic background, prior studies at a Certificate III level)
  • Evidence of interest in/preparation for working in the health field (work history, work experience, life experience)
  • Literacy (ability to read and comprehend, summarise and express concepts)
  • Numeracy (ability to carry out basic calculations involving addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, percentage and decimal points)

HERC will conduct suitability checks on all applicants relating to the above criteria prior to selection.

HERC are obligated under the training and RTO Standards to ensure students undertaking courses are fully informed of the course requirements and fees, and have the potential to be successful at completing the qualification and gaining employment. HERC therefore require applicants to complete a questionnaire and a language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) assessment prior to commencing the course. You will be guided through this process as part of your enrolment requirements.

Applicants will be required to take and pass a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment that will be held at HERC.

The LLN test endeavours to identify the skill level of the applicants by assessing:

  • general reading skills
  • the ability for the applicant to follow simple instructions
  • the ability for the applicant to perform mathematical tasks that require addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication
  • assessing reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension

We will advise you by email the time and date of your test once you have completed a compulsory expression of interest form located in the last tab at the end of this page. 

The group interview is a mandatory part of the application process. The group interview will be held in our training rooms at 182 Macquarie Street, Hobart.

On the day of the Group Interview, you will be asked to fill in and submit an enrolment form, before participating in a group interview held by two HERC staff members. The interview will consist of a series of questions regarding your interest in the course, why you have applied and your previous work/life experience. You will also be asked to partake in group activities to show your effective communication skills and problem solving abilities.

The course cost for a full fee paying student will be $18,000. This includes a $600 non-refundable enrolment fee due at commencement of your course.

There may be funding available for eligible students through the State Government which will reduce the cost of the fees. 

Learner Eligibility for Skills Tasmania Job Seeker Funding

All students accepted into the course will be required to set up a payment plan at the beginning of the course, which will direct debit the associated fees each week/fortnight/month.

Your course fees will cover the basic materials needed for your course, (including your uniform, SIM consumables, loaning of text books, online learning resources and personal protective clothing), but in order to undertake the course, you will need to pay for the following:

  • A National Police Certificate- $42.00 - $45.00
  • A working with vulnerable people card/registration - $115.50
  • Any additional vaccinations you may require, including serology to show previous immunisation history (costs will vary)

To achieve a Diploma of Nursing, 25 units must be completed. This is comprised of 20 core units, and 5 elective units.

The five elective units have been chosen as fulfilling the requirements of industry and endorsed accreditation.

Industry placements are a required element of the HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing and are your first opportunity to gain firsthand experience in a varied range of health and care settings. You will acquire clinical experience in settings, such as private and public hospitals, community settings and aged care facilities.

Students are required to complete 12 weeks of work placement to obtain their HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing. This is completed over 2 blocks of 2 weeks, and 2 blocks each of 4 weeks. Each placement block requires fulltime shift work hours and an ability to travel to work placement location.

Bachelor of Nursing

In addition to a blended model of learning that combines online learning with on-campus intensive periods, you will undertake a minimum of 800 hours of Professional Experience Placements aligned with your interests, and across a variety of five clinical and healthcare environments.

Your learning is delivered in a highly supported environment. We provide in-person support throughout your studies from dedicated nursing teaching staff, and guarantee a maximum of 1:12 staff to student ratio for your practical and simulation learning experiences. We're here to help you with whatever you need, when you need it, and ensure that your learning experience is personalised and focussed, just like the care you'll be providing as a registered nurse.

We'll prepare you to be solution focused, compassionate, agile, and resilient, developing the clinical reasoning and practical skills required for your role as a registered nurse.

If you need to study away from home, our Relocation and Travel Support Allowance helps cover accommodation and associated costs within Tasmania.

English Language Requirements - All Applicants

Standard 1.3 of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council requires that students demonstrate English language proficiency. All applicants must provide either a written declaration that English is their primary language, or evidence that they have achieved the minimum English language test results (see details, below), as stipulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language skills registration standard (2019).

All applicants for whom English is not the primary language require one of

  • IELTS 7.0 (no individual band less than 7.0), or
  • Occupational English Test - OET (with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking), or
  • TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test: 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing, and 23 for speaking, or
  • Pearson Test of English - PTE Academic (with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking)

English Language Requirements and Mandatory Functional Requirements Declaration

Domestic Applicants: All domestic applicants must complete the Bachelor of Nursing English Language and Mandatory Functional Requirements Declaration. Applicants complete this step during the application process.

International applicants: International applicants are not required to submit this form. However , all international applicants will be asked during the application process to agree to, and accept, both the English Language Requirements and the Mandatory Functional Requirements.

Domestic Applicants

Please note that admission to the Bachelor of Nursing is highly competitive and that achieving the entry requirements does not guarantee an offer for this course. Applicants who meet the entry requirements are ranked and offers are made based on the number of places available.

Please note 90% of all places in this course are reserved for Tasmanian residents. Residency is based on residential address.

Domestic applicants who recently completed secondary education

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. In 2022, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was:

  • 60.35 - Cradle Coast
  • 65.00 - Hobart
  • 60.35 - Launceston

The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your individual subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed a Diploma, or Advanced Diploma, in any discipline.

Domestic applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have:

  • Partially completed an undergraduate course at Diploma level or higher (or equivalent). Applicants must have completed at least two units of study (equivalent to 25 UTAS credit points). If an applicant has failed any units the application may be subject to further review before an offer is made.

Domestic applicants with work and life experience

This course does not accept applications on the basis of work and life experience.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors for special consideration, including economic hardship, a serious medical condition or disability.

We can only approve applications for special consideration where we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the UTAS admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.

SAFETY IN PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS

This course includes compulsory Professional Experience Placements. You must meet the College of Health and Medicine's Safety in Practice Requirements before census date of the first semester of your course. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course admission application.

English Language Requirements

This degree requires an IELTS (Academic) of 7.0, with no individual band less than 7.0, or a PTE Academic score of 65, with no score lower than 65 or equivalent.

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided. See the English Language Requirements page for more information.

General Entry Requirements

Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a 12th year of education in Australia.

Career pathways

The Bachelor of Nursing is designed to prepare you for a career as a Registered Nurse, who are at the forefront of healthcare delivery. Demand for registered nurses is only increasing, with 85,000 more nurses forecast to be required to meet future healthcare needs by 2025.

Upon graduation, you can apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra). If you wish to work as a Registered Nurse in another country, you will need to apply for registration with the national regulatory authority of the country in which you wish to work.

You can be an integral part maintaining healthy community, working in sectors such as health promotion, mental health, or aged care, by having a person-centred focus, while providing advice, treatment, and management.

Critical care, emergency, surgical and medical nursing demand is also increasing. Acute care roles, primarily located in hospitals, are vital for an efficient and effective healthcare system to function. As a registered nurse, you'll have the opportunity to specialise across the healthcare system, in roles such as:

  • Acute care nursing, including critical care, emergency nursing, surgical, and neonatal care
  • Primary healthcare, including health promotion, sexual health, and child and family health
  • Mental health across both acute and community roles
  • Rural and remote healthcare
  • Nursing education

Postgraduate study

The Bachelor of Nursing is a professionally accredited degree. This course is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).
