Have you ever thought about the advantages and disadvantages of co-education? Well, in this article, we will cover all the advantages and disadvantages of co-education system.

The topic of co-education has always been popular in our society. There is always a positive as well as a negative side to co-education, while there are more advantages and fewer disadvantages. Co-education is a schooling system where girls and boys are taught together under the same roof, in other words, we can call it mixed-gender education.

The idea of a co-education system was introduced back in the 1830s when it was decided that girls and boys would study and learn alongside. Since then, this co-education system has been adopted by many developing countries and they highly encourage it because they think it helps in developing the personality of men and women which is later quite helpful for them as they enter the real world.

1. better communication skills.

It is widely known that it is an important factor that kids develop communication skills from a young age and there is no better way than a co-education system that would help kids in building the skills that they need. Co-education plays a huge role in this as it allows the children to talk to people of any gender with ease. If kids are not given this opportunity, then it would affect them in the longer run as it would be difficult for them to interact with people and communicate with them.

2. Preparing for the real world

Co-education can be the perfect tool of shaping young minds for the real world in the long run. No matter where they go, men and women must be in constant contact with one and another throughout in the corporate world. By experiencing this at an early age they will find it much easier having to build relationships and work with the opposite genders.

Competition is always there no matter if you’re a kid or an adult and it is a key factor in our lives. Healthy competition in an education system plays an extremely vital role as it helps the kids to deal with success or failure in school life or later in the corporate real world. Be it working in a team together for a project, preparing for a presentation or working alone, it can help in overcoming the barriers of shyness and create a rather comfortable environment. It would help the pupils and motivate them to share their ideas or opinions with a group of people without any fear. It would help in creating a balanced environment.

5. Breaking down barriers

Stereotypes have always been a huge problem in every society. These stereotypes cause issues for boys and girls in specific roles, but co-education systems can help in diminishing these barriers. For example, some girls would not be offered to work with robots or electrical cars as they are seen to be for boys, similarly boys would be discouraged to take the subject of fashion and textile or food nutrition as they are seen something for girls but these things don’t matter in a co-education system as whether it is a boy or a girl, they all are treated the same way and are encouraged to take similar subjects or take parts in activities.

6. Mutual understanding and respect for the opposite gender

Some recent study revealed that children behave in a much more decent and civilized way when they are taught in a co-education school. Co-education is a key part of building the characters of these kids, both girls and boys. These things emphasize, focusing on how important it is for children to respect and listen to the opposite genders, it also helps in developing and creating a better understanding level that eventually helps in reducing any kind of discrimination regardless of any gender.

If young boys and girls are exposed to diversity at an early age, it will be super helpful as they grow up, it would be much easier for them to adapt into different environments. This kind of set up offers to be in teaching styles that portray other forms of diversity such as social barriers or different cultures.

With the help of co-education schools, it helps the students to work and do assignments together. This not only helps them while they are young, but it also helps them when they grow up to be in the corporate world. Children must go to a co-education school as this will help in building their self-esteem, it is a place where they will meet and face people with all types of personalities which would be beneficial for them as they grow up, it will not only boost up their self-esteem but will also teach them to respect each other’s self-esteem. This would help the young minds to step out of their comfort zone confidently.

Disadvantages of co-education

Though the advantages weigh way more than the disadvantages of the co-education systems, every system has its good and bad sides. Hence, here are a couple of disadvantages of co-education.

1. Unwanted arguments/fights causing unhealthy environment

Since both these genders have different schools of thought, arguments are bound to happen. If the arguments are not handled in a proper manner, then it may cause an unpleasant environment for the students which might take a toll on their mental health as well as their behaviors. Thus, it will divert the attention of students from concentrating on their studies.

2. Lower concentration level

Studying together may cause a lower level of concentration in the studies as younger minds are known to be easily diverted into other things so this may have an adverse effect on the studies of the children.

3. Less confidence

Some kids may not be confident enough to speak up in the class in front of their classmates. They might not be able to perform well, hence this would cause issues in participating in class projects, presentations or even asking questions. Kids might not feel comfortable with the opposite gender being in the class which would affect their studies badly.

4. Limitation of resources

Co-education systems mean that there will be more pupils in classes which will put a high strain on the resources available at the institutions which are already very limited. Due to this reason, it will cause quite a lot of problems for the performance and results of the students.

5. Early relationships

Students are likely to spend most of their time in school, which means that opposite genders have plenty of time to interact with each other, this can lead to engaging in relationships. Students at an early age are immature or careless and indulging into unethical relationships may cause some serious problems.

6. Unethical activities

As young students are immature, there is a high chance of risk that these students end up indulging in unethical activities or crimes that can destroy their future. Such unethical activities can be anything from flirting to lying or stealing to parents or early affairs. One of the biggest and most serious issue is sexual harassment in these institutions. Many cases are registered of sexual assault.

Despite all the advantages and disadvantages of co-education, it is still growing rapidly in most parts of the world. It totally depends, if we start to take things in a more positive way only then will we achieve fruitful results. We are the ones who need to teach and train the minds of people that co-education is productive for our society.

To conclude, co-education is an excellent system which will help our children in all spheres of life. It will not only help build up their confidence but also in their all-round development which would benefit them in the real world.

It was established in 1714 in Surrey (now in South London). During the Middle Ages in Europe, co-education was rare, and most education took place in monastic and religious institutions. Co-education became more prevalent in universities and colleges during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The fight for women’s right and increased gender equality further promoted co-education. By the mid-20th century, co- education became common in primary and secondary school around the world including India.

Co–education in India has been present since ancient times in the form of the Gurukul system of education, where students of all genders received education in the same place under the guidance of a guru or teacher. After India gained independence in 1947, co-education started to regain popularity. The Indian government promoted co-education as a means to promote gender equality and social integration. In India majority of the colleges and university departments are now co­educational. While co-education is widely practiced, disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes still exist in certain parts of India, particularly in rural areas. After the enactment of the Right to Education Act in 2009 it was made compulsory for educational institutions to provide equal opportunities to students of all genders.

The supporter of Co-education basically favor the Co-Education system for two factors i.e. Sociological and Economical factor. The various benefits of co-education are described as follows:

  • Some students feel shy and uncomforatble in co-learning environment for personal and cultural reasons.

However, it can also lead to less concentration, social pressure and reinforce gender stereotype. Its implementation depends on culture, proper management, and the ability to address needs and challenges of mixed learning. Finally the choice should be madedepending on the values and specific goals of students and an educational institution.

Co-Education means educating boys and girls or both genders together in one education system, under one building and in same institution.  In the recent times some of our colleges, schools and universities have adopted this concept.  A lot of people favor this system of education but also there exist some minds who do not accept this system.  Co-education is common concept in European and other developed countries but this concept is not as much popular in Pakistan.  In Pakistan a small number of colleges have adopted the co-education.  People in Pakistan believe that co-education leads girls and boys to wrong concepts of leading life.  However, there are some other people who believe that co-education can bring a healthy competition in girls and boys.  This can be beneficial to both genders mutually so we should adopt it. 

Co-education and social intelligence:

It would not be wrong to say that this is the basic need of time to stand both genders together.  In the present era no development is possible without even one of these genders.  Both boys and girls are equally important for development in any sector of the country.  We should not deny that boys and girls have to live together in the society so we should prepare them in advance to survive with each other.  Co-education is very important for understanding social progress. Social progress can be defined as the capacity of a society to meet the human needs of its citizens and allowing them to enhance the quality of living.  No society can progress without competition.  If we will not allow boys and girls to compete with each other we will not be able to develop social intelligence in them. 

Co-education, a controversial issue of our country:

There is no doubt that co-education has been a controversial issue of our country since after the partition.  There are some people who encourage this system of education and want to introduce in our country.  There can be many arguments to favor the co-education.  The major reason to support co-education in Pakistan is in a backward and financially ill country it is impossible to maintain separate education for both genders. Co-education will be proved good for the progress of the country, enhance the standard of education and develop as sense of competence in students. 

But there also exist some arguments in defaming co-education which include: in country like Pakistan sex consciousness develops in early ages.  So it would not be wrong to say that co-education may lead to the lack of concentration in studies.  Because opposite genders attract each other so they lose interest and concentration in education.  Also there exists sexual harassment in co-education based institutions.  In co-education there are more chances of distractions, enethical activities and more interest in personal feelings. 

Advantages of co-education:

A good education system is considered to be progressive if it give equal value and respects to both genders.  As co-education plays a vital role in social intelligence.  Co-education system can also be named as mixed-sex education.  In co-education boys and girls learn to develop a sensation of mutual respect.  In under developed countries like Pakistan sex discrimination has reached its peak.  Co-education can be helpful in overcoming the fear of opposite gender.  Co-education will also result in healthy competition and develops the sense of self-esteem among genders. 

Almost all the countries of the world have accepted the concept of modernism.  Modernism can be defined as transfer of dogma to facts.  In this modern era we should understand that development of girls is as much important as boys.  So we should introduce co-education in order to encourage their survival in the future.  Co-education develops many mentionable characteristics in human personality which include character enhancement, denouncing discrimination on the basis of gender, developing a sense of competition in boys and girls, maintaining resources and promoting a controlled environment. 

Co-education as a western culture:

It will not be wrong to say that some people support co-education because they want to adopt western culture.  There is a need to understand the difference between modernism and evil.  There is no doubt that west has adopted co-education and we can copy them too.  Co-education is not a form of evil.  It is just a getting education by the cooperation of your opposite gender.  Anything can be demonstrated wrong if it is used for the evil accomplishments.  And even a wrong thing can be right if it is done for the sake of someone’s benefit.

Here, I am not supporting or defaming the co-education.  My opinion is that co-education under a controlled environment and good administration of college, universities and schools will be proved beneficial in the development of country.

Conclusion:

To conclude, co-education is an excellent system of promoting education equally among mixed genders.  No country can lead to progress unless both girls and boys work together for it development.  So, we should promote co-education under a controlled system.  It is important to develop all-round characteristics of kid’s personality as it takes away the fear of interacting with the opposite gender.  Moreover, co-education prepares them for a world where they can work in all kinds of environment without being hesitated.

Even today, during the times of urbanization, industrialization and modernization traditionaland orthodox people are not in favour of co-education. They believe that similar kind of education for both boys and girls is not good. The some main reason for this is that both the genders have to play different roles when they become adult citizens. In addition, the existence of opposite gender can fascinate the attention of pupils towards each other resulting in lack of educational achievements. Thus, according to such people it is advisable to have separate educational institutions for boys and girls.

With the passage of time, many changes have come up in society. Professionals involved in the teaching stream have made efforts to make masses realise the advantages of co-education. Coeducation has helped both men and women to share different works and experiences in different fields. Co-education has shown that if girls and boys are nurtured together in schools and colleges, they can talk and exchange ideas freely without barriers and accept each other as human beings.

Co-education helps in improving the general performance of an individual. Such kind of education encourages the spirit of healthy competition between boys and girls. They try hard to do well in their exams and in other fields to gain each other’s appreciation.

Men have a natural habit to impress women. As a result, they behave and dress well. Men acquire the qualities of being well mannered, considerate and courteous. Women too show admirable behaviour. In the same way, boys in schools and colleges work much harder. The girls too in order to perform well than boys devote a great deal of time in studies. Hence, co-education provides the atmosphere for a healthy competition.

The system of co-education helps the girls to become brave and courageous. They are able to face the male dominated society and can fight for their rights in society. Therefore, co-education is essential for the development of tolerant, liberal, progressive and open-minded society where men and women both co-operate to build a better world to live in.

Set 2: Essay On Co-Education

Co-education means boys and girls receiving education together in one and the same institution. Co-education is in vogue in all advanced countries of the world like England, America, Russia, France and even Turkey, Our Constitution has done away with all the discriminations on the basis of religion, class or sex.

Woman in India today enjoys full freedom. She enjoys an equal status with man. She has a right to vote just as man has. She is eligible for the highest position in the State. She is no longer the slave of man. She is no longer a house drudge. She has came into her own.

We have to provide her educational facilities equal with man. We have not enough women’s colleges to accommodate all the female aspirants after higher education nor does our present budget allow us to open separate women’s colleges. Girls, therefore, must join co-educational institutions if they are not to be left behind in the race for progress. Girls also prefer to join co-educational institutions not for the sake of romance and sight-seeing but because they are better staffed and better equipped. The staff in a purely women’s institution is seldom stable for as soon as a woman lecturer is married, she resigns and goes away to the station of her husband. The education of the girl scholars thus suffers in consequence.

Our orthodox brethren assert that free mixing of boys and girls would lead to romance and love marriages which usually have an unhappy ending. Such fears are unfounded and base-less. In a coeducational institution, boys and girls try to behave better in the presence of others. The college life becomes sweet and charming and attendance also improves. Men and women mix freely in trains, buses, cinemas, places of worship, in the family and fairs. Heavens won’t fall if they mix in colleges. When there is a larger number of girls in a college, they don’t attract attention. The novelty is worn off. Familiarity blunts the edge of curiosity and makes the whole thing look common. Co-education improves the moral tone of the students.

There is also distinct improvement in the university results, since co-education brings about healthy rivalry. The cost of education to the State is reduced. The same staff, the same building and furniture, can satisfy the educational needs of both the sexes. In a coeducational institution, boys and girls mix freely at the debates, in associations, clubs and societies attached to the institution and thus have ample opportunities of understanding one another’s viewpoint. As the public standard of morality is raised, co-education may be introduced with an advantage. The girls are prepared to shoulder with the boys.

Co-education Essay with Quotations for Class 12

Co-education means the education of boys and girls together. In recent years, some of our colleges have adopted this system. Some people favour this system. They say that this system is very useful. Their main argument is that in a poor and backward country like Pakistan it is impossible to maintain separate institutions. So co-education would be adopted and the existing colleges and schools should also be opened to girls.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” (Nelson Mandela)

The supporters of co-education also say that this system would provide an opportunity for young men and women to come closer and to understand each other.  This would be very useful to them in their future life. It would also be good for the progress of the country. Another argument is that co-education would raise the standard of education because it will promote competition among boys and girls.

“There is here, as in all countries, advantages and disadvantages.” (Nathaniel Smith)

But all these arguments are not based on facts. All of our institutions are overcrowded. The girl’s schools and colleges too are overcrowded. Hundreds of new educational institutions are needed. If some of these are reserved for girls, it would not cost more to the government.

The second argument too is false. If young men and women cannot understand each other at home, they would not be able to do so in colleges.

The system of co-education will not raise educational standards. Temptation of flirting is stronger than the urge of reading textbooks. Co-education will create many problems and complications not only for the students but also for the teachers. Temptation does not distinguish between the students and the teachers.

The real reason why some people support co-education is that they like the western culture, they want to be more English than the English. Because the West has co-education, they must have it too. But we have to consider whether our religion, our culture and our circumstances allow us to adopt co-education. Certainly not. Our young men and women need education and not co-education. We must understand that co-education may demolish our education system as well as our culture. It may cause many social evils and complications not only for the students but for their parents too.

Co- Education

Co- Education means education of boys and girls learning together in the same school or college at the same time. In India it has recently become popular. Co-education is not a new thing for us. In the good old days when ‘Ashrams’ were the seats of learning, co- education was find a number of examples which show that co-education was all over the country. The practice continued till the coming of Muslims in India. The Purdah system put an end to co- education.

Co- education is no longer a taboo. Even in villages and small towns girls and boys study together now- a – days. It has become popular only because of its many advantages. When girls and boys interact with each other from childhood, the fear, craze and mystery of the opposite sex is removed from the mind. They observe the changes that come in each other’s body and mind with age as a normal part of growing up. Moreover, they learn to understand each other’s individuality, behaviour and way of thinking.   Sitting, moving, taking, studying and eating together removes many complexes and makes the person’s approach more rounded and wholesome.

Education is not limited to the knowledge imparted only by books, it is a continuous process learned more from the environment , people and changes around as than merely from books. With the opening up of new vistas of learning, and new opportunities of career, it has been understood that men and women contribute equally in every field of society.

Co- education is a step towards this direction only. It teaches both girls and boys to be tolerant and respectful of competition with each other. This society has a great number of normal men and women. They don’t find anything objectionable in men and women mixing together.

For a poor country like India where we are still building up our national economy, how difficult it is to run separate girl- colleges. Either we can’t secure the series of efficient lady teachers or the funds do not allow us to run standard institutions of this type. The number of girl students, though rising every year, is not yet so high as to enable us to run separate colleges in India. On still higher level in Degrees, they have to be together as there cannot be separate universities and post- graduate colleges. A poor country like India which needs education of women more than any other country, cannot afford to have two institutions at own place. Co- education creates better understanding between youngmen and young women. After all they have to live together in life. There is no need of unnatural separation of sexes in our schools and colleges.

Twenty five or thirty years ago none could foretell that any Indian lady would be the first in women from any nation to preside U.N.O. Sm. Vijay Laxmi Pandit had this honour. Sm. Raj KuMARI Amirt Kaur also presided W.H.O. of U.N.O. in India they  are on highest levels – in M.P.’s and in offices – Sucheta  Kriplani, Deshmukh, Aruna, Renu, to name only a few. All these worked together with men in the leadership of Gandhiji and did a lot to win India’s freedom. So for a long past Indian tradition has been of honoring women. The darkness of middle ages should could us no more.

Colleges and schools are temples of Sarawati. Modern student is very sensible and responsible. India’s cultural roots are very deep, spiritual progress is always given a due importance in India. ‘Distance lends enchantment to the view’, in other words. A lady veil’ is a point of greater attraction whatever her beauty. So it is not proper to have separate schools or colleges.

Co-Education

Co- education is one of the very important questions that has always disturbed our educational pundits. Co- education means that there should be no separate schools for boy and girls.

There are differing opinions on the subject of co- education. Swpporters of this form of education give the examples of the western countries where this system was introduced years ago and has proved a success. They advance many theories to prove their point. Firstly, the system leads to economy. Secondly, it gives place to exchange of free ideas between boys and girls and removes inhibitions with which Indian boys and girls suffer. Thirdly, it enlarges the scope of and enthusiasm for competition and gives better results. Besides, the presence  of girls among boys in the same schools, colleges, and libraries will result in healthy thinking and any unwanted emphasis by boys or girls on the sexual side of their relationship would give place to a sense of comradeship.

Those who oppose co-education have their own arguments. According to them, though the system leads to economy yet the benefits as such are ultimately false. Moreover giving the same types of education to both boys and girls is equal to going against nature. Men and women are temperamentally  different and education to be beneficial must in each case be so adjusted as to suit both men and women. Thus the very idea of co- education is wrong.

Now if we weigh the  arguments of both sides we will find truth in both. In India co- education generally starts at the college level when free mixing between boys and girls is not possible because at this grown up stage they are very much sex conscious and shyness stands in their way. This argument has also not been able to prove right on the ground. Quite recently especially in the big cities of India, the conception of separate schools and colleges for boys and girls has almost vanished. It has been observed and to the satisfaction of all that co- education is more healthy a process. Such schools and colleges are successfully bringing  out educated youth fully confident on their talents without any inhibition for each other. It has resulted into a healthy atmosphere in offices and other places of work. Men and women are seen rubbing shoulders with each other in all the fields of life and the seed is sown in the schools and colleges. The women are becoming more and more confident in their activities and enough bold to face any hardship. Gone are the days when the girls were such commodities which were kept wrapped behind curtains and not shown the light of the day.

Essay No. 03

There was a time when it was believed that boys and girls should be taught in separate institutions. In ancient gurukuls, there were only boys who were given education them. In spite of this, women generally had good education in ancient India.

After independence, several education commissions and committees were set up. They generally advocated co-education in  schools up to 10+2 level and separate education for boys and girls at the university level till graduation.

This policy is now by and large being followed in our country. There is , however, co-education again at post-graduation level.

Some people believe the co –education should not be there. In their opinion this can lead to attrition between boys and girls and thus it can be of mutual benefit to both sexes. It can mean better  discipline since in the presence of girls the boys will not talk irrelevantly or obscenely in the class.

The most potent argument advanced by co-education lovers is that it can help both boys and  girls in the development of their personality. They can come out of their enclosed shell-like personality and get rid of their unwarranted hesitation and shyness.

This can make boys and girls more expressive, progressive and forded in outlook and attitude to life which can be of great advantage to both sexes.

It must however, be noted that some reservations are also there and even in a country like England, exclusive schools for girls are now being set up.

Co-education

When parents consider what school to send their child to, they often first decide whether they should send their child to a single sex school or to a co-educational one.

Some parents prefer to send their children to single sex schools, in order to minimize their contact with the opposite sex, and so, to some extent, prevent their children from indulging in such ‘hanky panky.’

First of all, it is important to understand that just by sending your child to an all-girls or all-boys school doesn’t stop them from seeking out the opposite sex. You can minimize contact when your child is in school, but you cannot stop your children meeting others through tuitions, extra classes, the neighbourhood, or through friends. If your child meets someone with whom she shares chemistry, and if she makes the decision to get physical with such person, there’s little a parent can do. On the other hand, when you send your child to a co-educational school, your child will have exposure to the opposite sex from the outset. As a result, your child will not only feel more comfortable in the company of the opposite sex, but will also be able to handle advances better. A girl studying in a co-educational school may have ten boys in her class that are interested in going out with her, and may ignore them all, preferring to just hang out with friends . On the other hand, a girl in an all-girl’s school will meet fewer boys, and fewer still will show an interest in her. Such interest, since it isn’t something run-of-the-mill for her, may cause her to get carried away. However, she may still have a lot of exposure to the other sex. In this case, she may be more balanced.

When making the decision of sending your child to a single sex or a co-educational school, don’t base the decision on whether you want to minimize or increase your child’s exposure to the opposite sex. Instead, consider the reputation of the school, the activities it offers and the quality of education and educators. Certain schools are geared towards sending students abroad for further studies. If you want your child to go abroad, this is something you may consider. Then there are other less traditional schools that focus more on activities and less on academics. If this is something that appeals to you, then give this fact more priority than the student mix. In fact, when deciding what school to send your child to, whether or not it is co-educational should be last on your list of criteria.

Nairobi - Kenyan middle-distance runner Emmanuel Wanyonyi has opened up about his early childhood.

The athlete shared a heartbreaking story of his challenging upbringing and how he manoeuvred through it.

As he grew up, his siblings were lucky to attend school but they dropped out in Class Three or Four because of several challenges.

"No one took me to school. I always admired and wanted to learn, but because there were many at home and we had many challenges, it was not possible. I first stepped into school when I took myself to Class 1. I did not even begin from nursery but Class 1, which I took myself in 2011," he vividly recalled.

Wanyonyi said he borrowed the school uniform from a friend and did not mind whether it fit.

He was determined to get an education despite the circumstances back home, which were unfavourable.

"I went to Class 2 the following year and then Class 3 in 2013. I could not continue my education and had to drop out like most of my siblings and look for menial jobs like being a herdsman. I was even being chased out of school because of KSh 40, which my parents could not afford," the 20-year-old said.

Where is Emmanuel Wanyonyi from?

As young as he was, Wanyonyi from Trans-Nzoia county said he did the work wholeheartedly and was paid KSh 350 monthly.

He worked as a herdsman for that employer for only a month before being hired by a neighbour for the same work.

However, this came with some financial challenges, as his wages were KSh 150 less than he used to earn.

How much did Wanyonyi earn for winning gold?

As reported earlier, Wanyonyi earned $50,000 (Ksh 6.45 million) from World Athletics for winning a gold medal and Ksh 3 million from the Kenyan government.

In the Diamond League, he had two wins and a second-place finish. The wins came in Lausanne and Rabat, while his only defeat was in Paris just before the Olympics.

Winners in a series received $10,000 (Ksh 1.29 million), while second-place finishers got $8,000 (approximately Ksh 1 million).
