Business managers are now conscious of the need for environmentally and socially responsible behaviour and that current and future generations of managers should be trained to engage responsibly with different stakeholders. This puts responsible management education in focus, and many institutions worldwide—and initiatives like Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME)—are enhancing communication and bridging the gap between diverse stakeholders.

This chapter discusses a case study of The Energy and Resources Institute School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) (a PRME affiliate), an institution dedicated to education and research on sustainability in India. It takes an overview of how the university’s initiatives have introduced sustainability into education, along with engagement with stakeholders’ concerns. However, such initiatives may challenge the conventional education system in a developing country, and the chapter overviews these challenges faced by the university, both internal and external, and reports on the way forward for similar institutions in the context of developing countries.

Green Home to Fight Environmental Degradation: To Achieve Sustainable Development Goals

'Buildings' are the most pronounced elements in the fabric of any city. The housing sector in India is growing at a rapid pace and contributing immensely to the growth of the economy. The simultaneous increase in the demand for homes has caused a significantly high pressure on natural resources causing ecological imbalances such as loss of resilience to fight climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution. In this article, Pratiksha Baruah discusses about the tangible and intangible benefits of green buildings.

Green Home Loan: Concept, benefits, eligibility – Here’s everything you need to know

August 5, 2024 |, august 5, 2024, the financial express.

A specialized type of mortgage called green home loans encourages environmentally- friendly housing choices. The growing environmental awareness is a primary catalyst for the surge in green home loans in India. Additionally, significant long-term savings on utility bills resulting from enhanced energy and water efficiency serve as a major incentive. According to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), adopting green building practices in urban India could save an impressive 8,400 megawatts of electricity annually, enough to meet the lighting needs of 550,000 homes each year.

Concrete Jungles Fuel India's Heatwave Crisis

July 29, 2024 |, july 29, 2024, outlook planet.

With over 140 deaths and more than 40,000 hospitalisations for heatstroke, according to the Health Ministry's National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), summer 2024 has seen the most dramatic heatwave yet. It is no longer metaphorical. Cities, for example, often face the brunt of a heatwave. This can be squarely attributed to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) Effect, which is when urban areas have a significant temperature difference from surrounding rural areas due to a lack of green cover and addition of waste heat generated by energy usage into the urban environment.

Amid rising mercury, green constructions gain traction

June 3, 2024 |, june 3, 2024, hindustan times.

When it comes to mandates, states have been slow to notify and mandate Union government guidelines such as Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC). For example, in Uttar Pradesh, buildings with a four-star rating from GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment, a rating system developed by TERI) are given an additional floor area ratio of 25%. Similar incentives related to additional FSI (Floor Space Index or maximum permissible floor area relative to the plot size) are given by state governments in other states such as Delhi, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Rajasthan.

International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education

ISSN : 1467-6370

Article publication date: 13 July 2010

The purpose of this paper is to put forth a model for implementation of an environmental management system (EMS) in institutes of higher education in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors carried out initial environmental review (IER) and strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis to identify the major environmental concerns in the university. This was followed by preparation of environmental policy and plan based on ISO 14001 guidelines.

The key concerns in the university have been identified as energy consumption, waste generation, transportation, etc. The SWOT analysis shows that the university is doing satisfactorily in energy efficiency and water conservation while there is scope for improvement in case of waste management, transportation and landscaping. The environmental management plan has been prepared keeping in mind the gaps observed through the IER and SWOT analysis.

Research limitations/implications

Carbon footprint and water footprint analysis have not yet been carried out and hence, quantifiable targets have not been included in the environmental management plan.

Practical implications

Implementing an EMS at the university will help reduce the impact on environment due to various day‐to‐day activities. It will also lead to developing environmental consciousness in the minds of young professionals who graduate from the university as well university staff.

Originality/value

There have been very few examples of environmental consciousness in educational institutions in India. There is a need for model systems for incorporating environmental management in the university set‐up. This research documents the process of identification of environmental concerns followed by preparation of the management plan for an educational institution. The research also documents the need for different aspects of the environmental management plan.
