Game Over Movie Review: The Enjoyable, Fabulously Twisty ‘Game Over’, Starring Taapsee Pannu, Is A Bona Fide Original

Game Over Movie Review: The Enjoyable, Fabulously Twisty ‘Game Over’, Starring Taapsee Pannu, Is A Bona Fide Original

Language: Tamil

Cast: Taapsee

Director: Ashwin Saravanan

Oh, a serial-killer movie! That ' s what I thought during the vicious opening scenes of Ashwin Saravanan ' s fabulously twisty Game Over . The creepy camerawork by A Vasanth sustains this impression, with grainy images and a handheld vibe. Like in Michael Powell ' s seminal voyeur-thriller Peeping Tom (released in 1960, which also saw the release of another seminal slasher movie, Psycho ), we seem to be witnessing a sicko get off by murdering women and recording their final moments. A television report confirms the presence of a murderer at large. But wait! S erial-killer thrillers are built on fetishes, motives, and a reveal—either early on, or later—about the killer ' s identity that makes us piece together a " story " , along with the protagonist. Game Over is not exactly that movie, but then, you could come at this film from several angles.

Here's another angle. Game Over is a psychodrama about a suicidal video-game designer who ' s afraid of the dark: Swapna, played by a gritty Taapsee Pannu ( as always, the actress is more impressive at showing strength than vulnerability ) .

Here's another angle. Game Over is a movie about a ghost possessing a body in order to extract revenge. (T he means through which the " spirit " enters the body is genius, one of the most unique and imaginative plot points I ' ve seen.) This angle involves a tattoo artist (Ramya Subramanian), and her place of business does sound like something to do with the afterlife: Immortal Inks.

Here's another angle. Game Over is a movie where everything is just a surreal David Lynchian nightmare—or dream. (Look at the protagonist ' s name again: Swapna.) The film boxes her into a house with only a watchman and a caretaker ( an empathetic Vinodhini Vaidyanathan) named Kalamma. We see no neighbours, no parents, no friends. Maybe it is all happening inside her head!

In short,  Game Over is a tight genre-hopping thriller that keeps you guessing about the genre it can be slotted into. (I swear, I'm still trying.) The small miracle of the film is that it manages to pack all o f this— and a lot more— into 100-something minutes. (If I had to nitpick, I'd say there are a few pacing issues that make the film seem longer, but looking back, I can't see what could have been left out.) The short running time is partly because the screenplay n ever stops to fully explain anything. Even the backstory, when we do get it, is presented in dream-like fragments. We get to know bits about a man from Swapna's past who's now behind bars. There's a disturbing nod to a rape fantasy, and quick flashes of a traumatic incident from Swapna's life. A psychoanalyst drops the name of a condition called "anniversary reaction". (I was touched that Swapna took Kalamma to the session. It transforms their relationship in our eyes.) But instead of cohering into a "logical" (and conventional) story, these abstract jigsaw-pieces of information deepen the guessing game. Is Swapna mentally all-there? Or is this all some form of post-trauma syndrome?

I don ' t want to make Game Over sound like a wankfest for cerebral cinephiles. It is that, for sure—a very enjoyable one, written by t he director and Kaavya Ramkumar. (They follow a Roja – like structure that starts somewhere and darts off somewhere else before returning, around interval point, to the events at the beginning . ) But the film also delivers on chills and violence (I winced at the sight of a hand being crushed) and at least one solid jump scare. The early scene where a terrified woman runs out of her bedroom ends with one of the most effective cuts I have seen. (The sensational editing is by Richard Kevin.) It ' s not exactly a jump cut, but there ' s a " jump " in the logical flow of events — and it ' s shocking. And much later, the wait for Kalamma to re-enter the house, while we are left to guess her fate, is agonising. It ' s just a few seconds, but it feels like an eternity.

So here's another angle. Game Over has the relentless single-mindedness of a video game. (There ' s a stretch with Virtual Reality, too.) In the past, reliving the traumatic incident, Swapna wondered: Should I have done this or that? Strip away the emotion from this statement and it boils down to decision-making, similar to how games are played, and Ron Ethan Yohann ' s superb electronic score keeps slapping us with gamey synth sounds. Maybe that ' s the real reading of the film—that life is a video game. Maybe that's why we get posters that say: Real life makes me want to kill people in video games ! And : What if life is a video game and déjà vu are just check points ! In this reading, Swapna ' s life is its own version of Pac-Man, the game she keeps playing . I t's a game that gives the player three lives. It's an important detail.

Game Over is a bona fide original. To talk more about the movie will require MAJOR SPOILERS, so for those checking out now, let me just tell you that if your mind was scrambled by the plastic bags in Super Deluxe , you are in for a treat.

MAJOR SPOILERS till the end of the review . Here's a final angle : the film is a female-empowerment drama, powered by the slogan : Fight like a girl . The other females in this reading of the film are Amudha (Sanchana Natarajan), who fought cancer three times, and her mother (Mala Parvathy, who resembles Sanchana Natarajan; it ' s great casting). Game Over is about Amudha help ing Swapna conquer her fears, her inner demons. The three killers remain masked, and thus, faceless. We never learn who they are and why they do what they do. They're figurative. For all you know, they could be embodiments of patriarchy and misogyny, who kick women around like footballs. They ' re animals. They don ' t even speak to these women. (We only hear grunts). And they want to silence the se women, too. Even the good guys, the cops, cannot really help. These women must do it alone. Game Over says that rape and other kinds of violence against women result in long-lasting consequences similar to that of cancer . To really uproot the disease , the woman has to fight back. It ' s fitting that Game Over ends when a new year begins. With help from a sister, Swapna 's life begins anew.

‘Game Over’ review: A masterful thriller that is both fun and torturous

Game over is a unique, ambitious, unsettling film that is a marvellous achievement in the psychological horror genre.

Updated - June 15, 2019 06:34 pm IST

Srivatsan S

Taapse Pannu in ‘Game Over’

Game Over ’s intensely suspenseful opening scene sets the tone for its proceedings. It begins like your typical home invasion thriller, with a masked perpetrator standing outside a teenager’s house, intently monitoring her movements. He breaks into the house to find her taking a shower - Hitchcock’s Psycho comes to mind. Ashwin quickly cuts the scene to show the woman’s suffering; her face covered with a plastic bag and hands tied. It doesn't end there. Then comes the boldest and well-thought-out shot - of a headless body being burnt. It doesn’t end there either. He treats her head like a football, pocketing it at a nearby goalpost. The stretch is graphic and is nothing we have seen in cinema. It’s alluring details make it one of the rare and fascinating opening scenes...

A game designer by profession, Swapna (Taapsee Pannu in a remarkable performance with great resistance) lives in a cocoon, alienated from human contact. She hasn’t visited her parents in ages and lives with her housemaid Kala (Vinodhini Vaidhyanathan), who, thankfully, brings lightness to an otherwise dark (no pun intended) subject. Swapna has premonitions about New Year’s Eve and she's occupied by those troubled thoughts. We learn about this when she’s traumatised by the presence of darkness. She is nyctophobic and seeks help from a psychologist, who puts her condition in medical terms: Anniversary reaction - a result of a post-traumatic event. Which means that every day closer to the New Year, her condition worsens. I loved Ashwin’s idea of communicating this through a minimalist poster. Swapna and Kala are outside the clinic and the background has a series of images, showing different phases of lunar eclipse. Perhaps to explain Swapna's emotional state?

  • Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Vinodhini Vaidhyanathan, Ramya Subramanian and Maala Parvathi
  • Director: Ashwin Saravanan
  • Storyline: Swapna has to overcome fear of the dark. When the lights go out, her worst nightmare come true

One way to look at Game Over is from the perspective of a gamer. It’s largely set in a fictional world, where the events that unfold in the narrative are actual plots points of a video game. In fact, a poster says, “What if life is a video game and déjà vu are just check points?” Is she hallucinating? We don’t know this for sure, except but the fact that Swapna is a compulsive gamer, and often finds her obsessing over Pac-Man . It's an interesting choice of a game, for Pac-Man is a superb allegory on her. Structured like a game, she’s enclosed in a maze called life, with three Gothic-like figures after her head. There’s a constant hint about Swapna’s past that seeps into the narrative more than once. It’s indicative of a harrowing incident that stripped Swapna of her sanity. Her past is served through voice-overs and Swapna says, “I wish I could go back and mend things. However, life doesn't work that way.”

But what if there was an option to restart, like in the gaming world? Would Swapna fight back? Game Over is essentially an all-women world, where men hardly exists. Writers Ashwin Saravanan and Kavvya Ramkumar avoid stereotypes and make a powerful statement about fighting your inner demons. The closest movie I can think of in this genre is Darren Aronofsky’s Mother !

Game Over starts off like a murder mystery story, but midway into the movie; it comes across as a psychological horror. Of course, genre is irrelevant for a movie, whose imaginative ideas are broader and enormous. Take this scene for instance. When we are introduced to Swapna’s lifestyle, there's a split-second shot of a swing outside her house. You may feel it’s oddly placed, but the shot has a mind-blowing relevance in the second half. And it's chilling and terrifying (Ron Ethan Yohann’s mystic score is even more haunting) when you think about it. The film isn't free from narrative issues. I wasn’t too convinced by the tattoo angle. Although you could argue that it is a permanent stain/mark left on Swapna. Anything more, would spoil the fun for you.

I really wished Ashwin had given Swapna a closure. But in life, we don't have a restart button, do we?

‘Game Over’ movie review: A taut thriller about demons within and without

The central character in Ashwin Saravanan’s horror-tinged thriller is a video game creator, so it follows that her travails resemble a series of obstacles.

Some of these are in her head. Sapna (Taapsee Pannu) is a survivor of a crime that has left her anxiety-ridden. In a sprawling house with only the household help, Kalamma (Vinothini), and a guard for company, Sapna tries to get back to work while listlessly trying to improve her score on the classic video game Pac-Man .

Outside, a serial killer who likes to behead young women is on the prowl. The killer records his deeds on a camera even as he commits them, adding an extra visual layer to a film that deftly uses point-of-view camerawork and tight framing to create traps for Sapna. The idea of a home invasion is also extended in an interesting way as Sapna battles demons within and without.

Leanness is the name of the game here: the characters number a handful; jump scares are judiciously deployed; the dialogue is minimal to the point of being functional ( Game Over was originally made in Tamil and has been dubbed in Hindi). A detour into sentimentality is so jarring that it is a relief when it ends.

Saravanan and co-writer Kaavya Ramkumar deliver a taut and highly watchable thriller that, despite falling short of its ambitions, has a clever take on the way in which violence against women gets imprinted on bodies and souls. The insistence on self-reliance and resilience among brutalised women is, however, not always unconvincing, and the linking of Sapna’s anxieties to a larger culture of assault needed some more fleshing out.

Taapsee Pannu turns out a doughty performance as Sapna, who is restricted by her fears in psychological and literal ways, and Vinothini is equally effective as Sapna’s carer. As these women forge a sisterhood of sorts and navigate their way past the curveballs thrown their way, they suggest that the horror film can function just fine without men in it. At least on this score, Game Over is a modest triumph.

Director: Ashwin Saravanan

Rating: 3 Stars (Out of 5)

Ashwin Saravanan's Game Over , a Tamil-Telugu bilingual film dubbed in Hindi, is a compact, fast-paced thriller with a dash of the paranormal. It has the potential to tie you up in knots as you try and grasp what is real and what isn't in a layered plot that pits a gamer intent on improving her Pac-Man scores against the maze in her stressed-out mind.

The action occurs in the main in a sprawling, sparsely-occupied dead-end Gurugram bungalow. We have seen that kind of play on the after-effects of isolation and loneliness before. A woman grappling with the mental and emotional scars of a traumatic incident. Not particularly original either. For good measure, there's a serial killer on the prowl, too. Again, not original.

Game Over Movie Review: A still from the film. (Image courtesy: YouTube/Reliance Entertainment )

Yet Game Over employs a startling playbook that exudes both intelligence and freshness. The treatment is unusual - the film resorts to no more than a couple jump scares but stays on course to deliver several suspenseful slights that hit home with full force. And the technical flourishes - the fidgety camerawork ekes out claustrophobic spaces from within tight frames - are made to count.

And, certainly not the least, Taapsee Pannu's robust and affecting star turn keeps us invested in the plight of a character who, in the first half, is hamstrung by the demons in her mind and then, in the second, bound to a wheelchair as she goes head-to-head with a knife-wielding, masked marauder who comes knocking at her door.

ephlr6u8

The decision to set the story in Gurugram is easy to explain, given the dangers that lurk in this part of the world for women who live and travel alone and are independent-spirited, a trait denoted here without much apparent logic by the tattoos that such girls supposedly sport. The serial killer, who we do not see until well into the second half, targets women, decapitates them and then sets them ablaze, videotaping the act on a handycam.

But for a film in which the writer-director and the cinematographer (A Vasanth) have clearly invested a great deal of thought, Game Over gets one thing horribly wrong. Winter is at its peak at the end of the year in the National Capital Region but barring the heroine's sweatshirts that might be passed off as warm clothing of sorts if you are in the mood to gloss over a huge error, everyone is in summer attire. Are the people around her, like Pannu's character, supposed to 'imagine', rather than actually 'feel', the cold weather? This lapse in detailing may not take much away from the core of the film's generic strength, but it smacks of carelessness.

6abtg078

Pannu plays Swapna, a videogame developer who works from home and recoils in horror when the lights go off. They frequently do and she sinks into a state of delirium. Exactly a year after she survived a brutal assault on New Year's-eve, it is her mind that has begun to play tricks on the young woman. Her therapist (Anish Kuruvilla) blames Swapna's "panic attacks" on "anniversary reaction."

To make matters worse, the permanent tattoo on her wrist - which is in the shape of hand-held videogame console - begins to act up and mysteriously links her fate to the brutal murder of a cancer survivor, Amrutha (Sanchana Natarajan), which is staged in a disquietingly clinical manner in a petrifying prelude that culminates in the killer kicking a severed head into a football goal and setting the rest of the woman's body on fire.

What if life was a videogame, asks a poster on a wall of the protagonist's room. As the film infolds, it does indeed become one, and Swapna is condemned to dodge her way around daunting obstacles, both physical and psychological, helped by the ever-attentive domestic help Kalamma (Vinodhini Vaidyanathan), who tries her best to keep her from dwelling too much on the past.

h31kj5ho

The film plays on the theme of violence against women and uses beheadings, bloodshed, fire, the fear of darkness, and a macabre obsession with departed dear ones, all of which impinge on Swapna's life as she fights to get it back on the rails again. A card sows hope in her heart - it says that everyone has two lives, the second one begins when you realize that there is only one. She decides to fight the monster blocking her way.

The screenplay, smart and minimalist, lets the camera and the two actresses who are in front of it (Pannu and Vinodhini) do their thing without undue manipulation. It is the background score (Ron Ethan Yohann) that is a touch excessive.

Game Over , which is presented by Anurag Kashyap, is not without its share of failings, but director Saravanan is clearly endowed with an exceptional sense of the potential of the cinematic medium to probe complex aspects of humanity. Taapsee Pannu, as she has been in her recent outings, is never less than convincing. While she may be the primary reason why you must go out a watch this film, it certainly isn't devoid of other intrinsic merits in terms of substance and execution.

Game Over Movie Review

Game Over Movie Cast & Crew

Game Over has different perspectives; from the outset, it looks like a simple horror film but when you look deeper, there is an interesting phycological angle to it. People might question why Sanchana’s tragedy and Taapsee’s horrifying past experience weren’t told in an extensive manner; well if you understand the core concept of the film, you will get to know those untold stories are better left untold. That move could either make or break the film because not everybody will see the inner meaning but that’s the beauty of Game Over as well. For people who expect a detailed explanation might find this film quite confusing. Generally, when you make a thriller, directors tend to use a character as a representative of the audience just to let the people know how the lead character feels but here Ashwin hasn’t tried to spoon feed anything. Game Over has an edgy screenplay, very smartly written especially the climax portion. The way Taapsee unleashes each and every fear of her in the course of the last 30 minutes was brilliantly conceived and well translated on to the screen. It is not an easy task to fuse a hard-hitting subject with an interesting horror concept.

Game Over intends to give hope for all the people who are hiding themselves behind their fears. The dialogues were intense powerful and too the point. “Everybody has 2 lives, Your Second Life Begins When You Realize You Only Have One”, to place such meaningful dialogues at the right point of time, one needs tremendous clarity. Ashwin seems crystal clear on this right from the word go. It is always a healthy trend to see young directors come up with matured content like this.

The duration of one hundred and three minutes also helps the team to totally focus on their main premise. Each and every frame in the film has a purpose and the music adds so much value to the script. Ron Ethan Yohann stamps his class right from the title BGM when he blends game music with a frightening theme. The cinematography is another plus, some of the frames look so beautiful and classy. Though the scope for the DOP is limited to just a house and a few other locations, he has made sure no shot is repeated twice. Taapsee is just fabulous, initially, it looked as if she is roped in for this role because she played a similar character in a Hindi film ‘Pink’ but this role is even hard to pull off. A lot of scenes are explained literally through her expressions. They have just got the right person for the right job. She is coming back to Tamil after a brief hiatus of four years but it is definitely worth the wait for her. Vinodhini Vaidyanathan has done her part well like she usually does. Her character lightens up the mood now and then. Sanchana Natarajan has a short and sweet role which is the lifeline of Game Over. Her 15 minutes flashback portion has a power to make a lot of people cry.

Verdict: A phycological thriller that will entertain you if you understand it!

GAME OVER MOVIE REVIEW

Game Over (aka) Gameover review

Ashwin Saravanan's 'Game Over' begins with a shot of a woman being killed in a gory way. Her head is sliced off, and her body is burnt. What is remarkable about this is the way it has been shot. The camera is not steady, the colours are unsaturated. The shots are composed in an irregular angle and there isn't any pattern as such. In short, it is real. That sets the tone for the rest of the film.

Swapna (played by Taapsee Pannu) is a videogame developer, and she is extremely suicidal. Memories of a scarring incident keep flashing in her mind and she's unable to overcome that. In addition to this, she is scared of darkness and has panic attacks often. She lives in an isolated house with Kala Amma, played by a more-than-terrific Vinodhini. She's more than terrific because she overshadows Taapsee's acting in certain scenes, and Taapsee is terrific throughout. Look out for the scene where she looks out of the window to search for the watchman. Her eyes grow a pair of lips, a tongue, and starts conversing with finesse.

With most of the film shot indoors, Ron Ethan Yohan's score is more minimalistic. He underplays it at certain moments and lets the sound design do the magic. However it is the scenes which work in tandem, that stand out. This is a thriller that has a horror element to it, but the film rarely falls into the tropes of a run of the mill horror. The title 'Game Over' actually fits the film quite well. The elements of a video game are smartly juxtaposed with Swapna's life.

The horror elements used here are not just for jump scares. In fact, there is none. Something as trivial as switching between various CCTV cameras instills a sense of fear. The film is more grounded to the plot and there is so much attention to detail. Even yesteryear games like Pacman becomes a metaphor to Swapna's life.

The film has more to what meets the normal eye. Swapna is trapped inside her house, and whenever she encounters death face to face more often than once. The character and the story are so well interwoven that it is Swapna's fear that saves her life each time. It's not that she overcomes her fear to not die. She lives with it and still, things work out her way, organically.

The film's short runtime helps its cause in a big way. At just over 90 minutes, there are no extras. Not even a single dialogue. If Karthik Subbaraj's 'Pizza' changed the way horror films were made, 'Game Over' is a thriller you wouldn't have seen anything like this before. It's that good. It also addresses mental health in a sensible and matured way and offers a proper perspective on what with deteriorating mental health goes through. Even if one doesn't get the subtext of the film, it would still end up as a gripping edge of the seat thriller.

Game Over movie review: Taapsee Pannu tries her best in this slasher film with three climaxes

Game over movie review: taapsee pannu’s black mirror-inspired new film had a solid concept but devolves into a witless muddle in the final act. rating: 2.5/5.

Game Over Director: Ashwin Saravanan Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Parvathi T Rating: 2.5

Game Over movie review: This one could have easily been a smart film but it is not.

I didn’t walk into Game Over expecting a Red Dead Redemption II poster in the heroine’s bedroom. The 2018 game is a moral struggle set around the fading of the Wild West, and a genuine milestone in game storytelling, with astounding details and an encouragingly interactive open world. With influences like that, one would imagine director Ashwin Saravanan would create an innovative film.

The poster turns out to be window-dressing. The heroine, Sapna, played by Taapsee Pannu, is a game designer, and therefore everything in her house is game-related: Super Mario Brothers, Grand Theft Auto, and Contra memorabilia line walls and shelves as she relentlessly plays Pac-Man on classic Nintendo and PlayStation boxes. A poster says “Video games ruined my life. Good thing I have two more.”

Watch Game Over trailer:

I hope that poster got a screenplay credit, for that pithy line spawns the entire plot: Sapna, who fears the dark, gets a tattoo that eventually turns into three tattoos, giving her a couple of do-overs in a strangely gruesome battle for survival. Here, therefore, is a slasher film with three climaxes.

It’s a solid concept. The idea of a ‘memorial tattoo’ — where people mix a loved one’s remains into tattoo ink to keep them bonded under their skin — is novel, and feels both beautiful and macabre. Sapna, an assault victim, now carries the scars of a spirited girl who had been bound and decapitated. Given extra lives, can she survive?

Pannu is reliably strong in a hysterically distraught role, and Vinodhini Vaidyanathan, playing a loving caretaker, is wonderfully warm and makes the film feel real. At 103 minutes, Game Over feels brisk, though weak Hindi dubbing and clumsy dialogues surely rob the Telugu-Tamil bilingual film of some urgency. Cinematographer A Vasanth has fun, using muscular pan-shots to establish his characters and surroundings — even though bright daylight peeks from the windows during scenes set late at night. Stunts are by a gentleman called “Real” Satheesh, and to his credit, the gore feels suitably accurate.

Game Over stars Taapsee Pannu as an assault victim.

The thing about stories involving multiple lives — look at Source Code, Russian Doll, Edge of Tomorrow — is that each life needs to teach us something we use in the next turns. Game Over reaches its triple-header final act swiftly, then devolves into a witless muddle, with filmmakers ramping up sudden thrills but not seeding in the problem-solving elements the film needed.

This could so easily have been a smart film. We are never told why the heroine loves or makes games. Sapna doesn’t learn from mistakes, or ever truly take charge. No wonder she can’t beat her Pac-Man score.

A not to miss breathtaking experience.

Game Over is a not to miss, genre specific thriller based on the life of a gamer who is in search of a new life due to an unfortunate event that took place in her past. Taapsee Pannu is excellent in kickass psychological thriller

Game Over is an intelligent film that uses the video game concept in a smart manner. Just like in video games... the game is not over until all the lives are lost. It's not really over until it's over. (more)

Source: Janani, India Today

There are many layers to the film both psychological and 'spirit'ual and these moments are what make this film interesting.

There are a few jump scares, but they are more due to what the eyes can see and not because of the fear of the invisible, and Vasanth's cinematography manages to capture them adequately well. Another plus of the film is the background score by Ron Ethan Yohann; though loud in places, it's needed to ... (more)

A patchy affair

There are a couple of genuinely scary moments, but the rest of it is too stretched: even the 102 minute run time feels too long, with not enough thrills or chills. (more)

To be honest, I have seen much better horror- slasher thrillers than these. This was a extremely sick, partially boringand lengthy film. Ashwin Saravanan has good grip over technical aspects but long way to go as a director. I would prefer Maya now over this anyday.performances were quite decent. ( more )
