Hunting generally is done in the dark by the lionesses. They often hunt in groups of two or three, using teamwork to stalk, surround, and kill their prey. Lionesses aren't the most successful of hunters, because they usually score only one kill out of several tries. After the kill the males usually eat first, lionesses next—and the cubs get what's left. Males and females fiercely defend against any outside lions that attempt to join their pride.

These kings of the jungle can weigh between 250 and 550 pounds, depending on sex and age and can grow up to be 14 years old in the wild and over the age of 20 years old in captivity. They become capable at hunting at the age of two and are fully grown after 5 or 6 years. Male lions are distinguishable for their impressive manes, which signifies their masculinity and reflects their health. The darker and thicker the mane, the healthier the lion. It allows the lions to appear stronger and frightening to warn off enemies, particularly humans, and appeals to lionesses that are scientifically proven to mate more with lions with thick and dark manes. Lions with no manes are either genetically inbred or have been castrated.

The legendary white lion was once thought to be a figment of one's imagination until less than fifty years ago, when white lion cubs were discovered. This is due a recessive gene and they are not albino as they do have pigmentation in vital parts such as they eye, paw and lip. Their condition is called leucism meaning they only have pigmentation loss in the skin and fur. There are less than fifty white lions in the world.

Some lions have been known to eat humans however this is thought to only have been done by those who are suffering injuries and disabilities that make it difficult for them to hunt natural prey thus pursuing humans as they are weaker and easier to capture. Several other theories include wanting to defend itself. Another is that their natural habitat is unavailable and not wanting to starve, they attack humans. The thought that lions are predatory towards humans has created ignorance and increased the amount of hunting by encouraging the extermination of these creatures. Humans have taken over territories once belonging to lions and by forcing them to leave their natural home has further demolished their habitat and lifestyle, leaving them to suffer and destruct. Lions are now listed as being a vulnerable species and their population is now irreversibly decreased.

Lions have a devised a system of living in groups called prides that's based around related females. The majority of the pride, consisting of approximately 15 individuals and can sometimes even reach 40 individuals, is female with only a handful of male. Male cubs eventually leave and typically become nomads before taking over their own group as the territorial male and father of all cubs. They only leave the pride when challenged by other males and are forced to leave or are killed. Nomads usually travel lone or in pairs, most of the time being related males. If a female nomad attempts to join a pride, it is usually very difficult as the other lionesses reject their intruder who is not related to them.

Where Do Lions Live?

Historically, lions ranged across much of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Now, however, they are found mainly in parts of Africa south of the Sahara. An isolated group of about 650 Asiatic lions lives under strict protection in India’s Gir National Park. Lions live in a variety of habitats but prefer grassland, savanna, dense scrub, and open woodland.

What Do Lions Look Like?

An adult male lion measures 6–7 feet (1.8–2.1 meters) long, not including the 3-foot (0.9-meter) tail. It stands about 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall at the shoulders. The male can weigh 370–500 pounds (170–230 kilograms). The female is smaller, shorter, and more slender. The female weighs only about 265–400 pounds (120–180 kilograms).

The lion’s coat is short. It varies in color from light yellow, orange-brown, or silvery gray to dark brown. A tuft on the tail tip is usually darker than the rest of the coat.

Lion Manes Manes make male lions look larger and may serve to intimidate rivals or impress prospective mates.

Physical Abilities A lion can span nearly 30 feet (9 meters) at one bound and jump over a barrier almost 6 feet (2 meters) tall. It can dash a short distance at more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) an hour.

How Do Lions Behave?

Lions are unique among cats in that they live in a group, or pride. The members of a pride typically spend the day in several scattered groups that may unite to hunt or to share a meal. A pride consists of several generations of lionesses, a smaller number of breeding males, and their cubs. The group may consist of just a couple or more than 30 members. However, about 15 is the average size.

Lions prey on a large variety of animals. Mostly they hunt medium- to large-sized hoofed animals such as wildebeests (gnus), zebras, and antelopes. Lions may also hunt elephants and giraffes, but only if the individual is young, sick, or weak. In addition, lions readily eat fresh kills that they scavenge or forcefully steal from hyenas, cheetahs, or wild dogs.

Lionesses living in open savanna do most of the hunting. The males typically take their meals from the female’s kills. However, male lions are also adept hunters, and in some areas they hunt frequently. Males in scrub or wooded habitat spend less time with the females and hunt most of their own meals. Nomadic males must always find their own food.

Clever Hunters Lions hunt at night, using the darkness to help them hide from prey. Lions also hunt during storms, as the noise of storms covers any sounds they might make while stalking their prey.

Long Rests If prey is abundant, both lions and lionesses typically spend 21–22 hours a day resting, sleeping, or sitting and hunt for only 2–3 hours a day.

What’s the Life Cycle of a Lion?

Female lions usually breed with the one or two adult males of their pride. The gestation period (the time between conception and birth) is usually about 108 days. The litter size varies from one to six cubs, but two to four is usual.

The newborn cubs are helpless and blind. They have a thick coat with dark spots that usually disappear as they grow. Cubs are able to follow their mothers at about three months of age and are weaned by six or seven months. They begin participating in kills by 11 months but probably can’t survive on their own until they are two years old.

Lionesses often leave their cubs alone for long hours as they hunt. With no protection, the cubs are often attacked by animals such as hyenas. As a result, there is a high death rate among the cubs. However, survival rates improve after the age of two.

Some female cubs remain within the pride as they grow older. Others are forced out and join other prides or wander as nomads. Male cubs are expelled from the pride at about three years of age and become nomads. When they are old enough (after age five) they may try to take over another pride. Many adult males remain nomads for life.

In the wild, lions seldom live more than 8–10 years. Humans hunt them, and other lions may attack them. In addition, they may be hurt and die from kicks or puncture wounds from their prey. In captivity, lions may live 25 years or more.

Are Lions Endangered?

By the 2020s, the number of adult lions in the wild was estimated to have dropped below 25,000. Several subspecies have died out. Lions living outside national parks are rapidly losing their habitat to agriculture. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as vulnerable.

Conflict with humans outside parks is a major problem. Humans living around parks are the primary cause of death for most populations. In 1994, for example, a variant of canine distemper (a highly infectious disease affecting some animals) caused the death of an estimated 1,000 lions at the Serengeti National Park. The apparent source of the virus was domestic dogs living along the border of the park. Trophy hunting and local populations killing lions to protect their livestock also contribute to the lion’s decline. Despite such challenges, lion populations are healthy in many African reserves and at Gir, and they are a major tourist draw.

Your introduction should outline how the main body of your writing will proceed. By the end of the introduction you should have formed an outline for a coherent structure that your reader can follow.

Relate Back to the Thesis

Ensure that each paragraph explicitly connects back to the central argument or the essay question. This helps maintain a clear and focused argument.

The conclusion brings together the key points of the essay and restates the central argument in light of the evidence provided in the main body.
