First celebrated in 1979, World Food Day takes place annually on October 16 and promotes awareness of hunger and action for the future of food, people, and the planet. 

Here’s what you need to know about the holiday’s significance and history, how Concern is marking World Food Day 2024, and how you can get involved. 

What is the theme for World Food Day 2024?

This year’s World Food Day theme is: “Right to foods for a better life and a better future.” 

The world produces enough food to feed all its inhabitants, and food is recognised as the third most basic human necessity (after air and water), as well as a basic human right under the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two legally-binding international covenants. 

Yet hunger still persists for 10% of the global population. Moreover, having access to  something  isn’t enough. With this year’s World Food Day theme, the Food and Agriculture Organisation is calling for the right to a diverse and nutrient-rich diet that is affordable, accessible, and safe — for everyone. 

Here are a few ways that this year’s World Food Day theme resonates in some of the countries where Concern works. 

Right to foods in Chad

Chad continually ranks among the hungriest countries in the world, owing in part to a combination of conflict and climate change. Concern has recently launched Concerted and Inclusive Development in the Lake Province (DECILAC), a groundbreaking project supported by Facilité G5 Sahel. 

Centred in the country’s Lac Province, the project is focused on inclusively investing in  food security and strengthening local value chains. We’re working with communities to build both financial and climate resilience, while also fostering a diversity of diets through redeveloping agricultural polders and constructing fish markets. We’re also supporting these forms of dietary diversity through Chronic Humanitarian Crisis, an Irish Aid-funded programme supporting market gardening and artisanal fishing groups. 

Right to foods in Sierra Leone

In  Sierra Leone , a new initiative called Yoti Yoti has been designed to help build food and nutrition security through equitable and climate-smart food systems. The five-year project is funded by Irish Aid under Ireland’s Civil Society Partnership for a Better World (ICSP) and focuses on creating availability, access, utilisation, and stability of food sources.

The outcomes include inclusive participation in Climate Smart Agriculture, better market access for those living in extreme poverty, stable consumption of an adequate and affordable diet, and generating evidence to help inform policy at the local and national level. We aim to reach 21,000 people with this initiative, which we’re running across 64 communities in the Tonkolili and Port Loko districts. In the first year of the project, we reached nearly 9,500. 

Right to foods in Bangladesh

Fourteen year old Nazma Akter is drinking milk before leaving for school. She often participates in group discussions in the yard meeting conducted by Concern Worldwide and its partner organizations to gain knowledge about healthy food, health and hygiene, gender, and social safety issues. The Collective Responsibility, Action, and Accountability for Improved Nutrition (CRAAIN) project have educated them to act right about nutrition and safeguarding health.

With 75% of the country sitting below sea-level,  Bangladesh is one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, for those living below the poverty line. Concern recently led a multi-year consortium project (in partnership with WaterAid Bangladesh, Rupantar, and Jagrata Juba Shangha) to create an innovative and scalable nutrition governance model. 

Collective Responsibility Action and Accountability for Improved Nutrition (CRAAIN) took a community-based and intersectional approach to undernutrition in key areas. Through consultation and group meetings as well as practical training and supplies, low-income families were able to improve their diets and grow a wider range of nutritious fruits and vegetables in their yards. In addition to healthy food, participants learned about health and hygiene, gender, and social safety issues. Between 2020 and 2023, CRAAIN reached nearly half a million people. 

Why is World Food Day important?

The proverbial “now-more-than-ever” applies to World Food Day’s importance. Initially established to mark the anniversary of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, World Food Day goes hand-in-hand with the FAO’s mission to end world hunger and improve the standard of living for people living in rural areas. 

It also goes hand-in-hand with the missions of organisations that work with the FAO, like Concern. October 16 is a touchpoint for NGOs — and for the world; a reminder that hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition are among the most pressing issues of our time, and getting worse the closer we get to the 2030 goal of Zero Hunger.

World Food Day at Concern

Concern’s annual  Global Hunger Index , co-published with Welthungerhilfe, will launch on October 10 this year, just before World Food Day. An award-winning “report card” for world hunger, the GHI measures hunger based on four key indicators: Undernourishment, child wasting, child stunting, and child mortality rates.

With the GHI also comes our annual ranking of the  hungriest countries in the world — countries with the highest GHI scores indicating strong levels of hunger and malnourishment. We also offer takeaways and policy recommendations, based on each year’s data, to help global progress towards Zero Hunger.

  • Reducing food loss and wastage : This helps in stabilising availability even if overall production is reduced.
  • Using Technology: Technological tools  like Early Warning Systems, sensors, drones  can help in better decision making by farmers and governments.

Fighting world hunger: the enduring impact of Harry Chapin's 'Cat's in the Cradle'

This guest essay reflects the views of Jason Chapin, son of singer Harry Chapin and a former board member of The Harry Chapin Foundation.

Harry Chapin’s iconic “Cat’s in the Cradle” turns 50 this year. The song — about a father who comes to regret spending too little time with his son — was cowritten by my father and mother, Sandy Chapin, and became a smash hit.

But what makes it historic isn’t its commercial success. It’s the fact that it drove my father to launch a movement to end global hunger and poverty. It’s a movement that now includes many of the world’s most recognized musicians, entertainers, and nonprofit organizations.

The year before the release of “Cat’s in the Cradle,” Harry Chapin met radio DJ Bill Ayres, a fellow Long Islander, and they became best friends. Ayres helped my father realize that his fame and fortune could be an incredible force for good, an opportunity he seized when “Cat’s in the Cradle” topped the charts in December 1974.

He and Ayres founded WhyHunger in 1975, the Center for Food Action in 1976, and Long Island Cares in 1980. They lobbied Congress and President Jimmy Carter to create the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1978 to end hunger and poverty in the U.S. and globally. To support his causes, my father performed 100 benefit concerts and raised $1 million yearly from 1975 until his untimely death in 1981 — in an accident on the Long Island Expressway before a benefit concert in Eisenhower Park.

Fortunately, Harry Chapin’s dream didn’t die with his passing. Others stepped in to heed the call. Kenny Rogers, my father’s manager Ken Kragen, and Sandy Chapin kept his charities and movement thriving. Kragen and Harry Belafonte organized “We Are the World” in 1985 and credited my father for inspiring them. Willie Nelson established Farm Aid. Bruce Springsteen, Yoko Ono, Billy Joel, and others became ambassadors and helped lead WhyHunger’s Artists Against Hunger and Poverty. Jon Bon Jovi started JBJ Soul Kitchen. Nationwide nonprofit Feeding America serves as the umbrella organization for 200 U.S. food banks. Share Our Strength and its “No Kid Hungry” campaign champion helping vulnerable children and families.

More recently, the Biden administration held a White House Hunger Conference and launched the Challenge to End Hunger by 2030. The End Hunger Network launched the EndHunger2030 Campaign. Thousands of organizations and hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. provide critical support to 47 million people in the U.S. who are food insecure.

“Cat’s in the Cradle” helped secure my father’s spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame. More importantly, the song is the inextricable link to his eternal legacy as a humanitarian. Harry Chapin wanted to matter and wanted to do something. Through the efforts of those he inspired and who supported his movement, more than two million people who are food insecure in the U.S. and overseas are helped each year.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the release of “Cat’s in the Cradle.” Wednesday is World Food Day. Let’s embrace Harry Chapin’s philosophy, “When in doubt, do something,” and support the movement he created. Help the organizations working to end hunger and poverty in your community. According to a study by the United Nations, about one-third of the food produced globally goes to waste and 25 per cent of the world's fresh water is used to grow food that is never eaten. Shocking statistics, is it not? Keeping in mind the poor and marginalized communities who have been hit the hardest by the pandemic and its cascading economic after effects, never has it been more important to teach your young child about the importance of providing access to nutritious food to everyone. What can you do as a family? Read on to know.

Build a better future

World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honour of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945. In the past few years, the world has made major strides in improving productivity in the agricultural sector. Despite these improvements and the increase in food production, our food consumption is still out of balance.

The pandemic has given us the opportunity to adopt innovative solutions based on scientific evidence to help improve food systems. World Food Day is, in this aspect, a great opportunity for global unity to help everyone recover from the crisis, especially the most vulnerable. We all have a role to play by being more judicious with our food consumption patterns and adopting sustainable food habits. This year's theme of World Food Day, " Grow, Nourish, Sustain - Together" seems like an apt solution for the crisis we are facing and is something we should all try to emulate in our daily lives.

What can you do?

Are you wondering about how a small change in your lifestyle can create an impact globally? As a consumer, you have the unique opportunity to influence healthy food choices which, in turn, can lead to sustainable food systems. The first thing you can do as a family is to start reducing your food waste and work towards completely stopping wastage. You can teach your child the most important lesson when it comes to food - respect food. You can also teach them by example by storing leftover food and cooking only sufficient portions in order to avoid wasting. Another important lesson they can learn is how their food comes all the way from the farm to their table. Trying to grow a few vegetables at home will help them understand the work that goes into growing something from scratch. Storing food the right way makes a huge difference. Using leftovers from meals for another meal is also a great way to avoid wastage.

Support your local food businesses and shop from your local grocer. Not only is this the more environmentally sustainable choice, but it also doubles up employment opportunities for people in your community and improves the local economy. Other ways in which you can help your community are by supporting initiatives like school meals, contributing to food banks, community kitchens, NGOs and nutrition programmes. If you are unable to contribute monetarily you can always volunteer your time and create awareness about the significance of good nutrition and healthy eating through education.

Opt for seasonal foods as their nutritious value will be much higher and your food will definitely taste better as it grows in the right conditions. If you are very active on social media, you can use it as a platform to create awareness among others and don't forget to use the hashtag #WorldFoodDay by FAO. Food waste weigh-in

After you finish your meal, ask everyone to place their uneaten food in a bucket. Weigh the bucket. With this simple exercise, you can keep a tally of the food wasted in a week or month and it will help your child realise how much food is going to waste over a longer period of time. This will also encourage your child to be mindful of how much food they waste.

Explore what the world eats

Turn learning into a fun activity for your child. Find out about the different kinds of food people eat around the world. Find recipes and try making a few of them with your child. You even mark different dishes on a map to help your child learn.

Create a poster

Ask your child to create a poster with a theme around food - it could be #zerohunger #nofoodwaste or #worldfoodday . You can then send in their drawings to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization . Also keep an eye out for local contests and encourage your child to participate.

Small portions

Serve smaller portions to start with, and if you're still hungry you can always get yourself a second helping. Make it a habit to finish everything served on your plate. This small habit will go a long way in curbing food wastage.

Food storage

Store your food with care and teach your child about the types of food that can be stored in the refrigerator and those that cannot. You can also teach them how to store food in dry containers in order to avoid spoilage.

Try not to buy too many vegetables with a short shelf life but buy a mix of them. Always look at your stock of food and use your green vegetables first. Don't throw out a fruit or vegetable just because of a small blemish. Instead, cut out the small portion and use the rest of the fruit or vegetable. You can always stew fruits if they are slightly over ripe. Keep a check on the expiry date for tinned food. Try to stick to quantities you will use or else it will ultimately end up being thrown away.

Reuse leftovers

You can create entire meals from leftovers, so teach your child the value of this and try and create some fun recipes with them.

Make a shopping list

When you go to the supermarket you tend to overindulge yourself when you see all the products on the shelves. Instead, make a rough meal plan, get your child to help create a shopping list on what would be required for the week. You will be able to cut down on your food waste if you shop carefully. Almost 20 per cent of what urban Indians buy tends to be discarded. So, consciously cut down on your extra supplies and in a few weeks, you will notice that the waste from your kitchen has reduced considerably.

Follow the FIFO rule of first in, first out with items that you store in the refrigerator. The longer you store it, higher the odds of the food going bad or the nutrition value going down.

Cook in moderation

While cooking at home we tend to cook extra. Instead, try and cook just enough for everyone at home. You can always eat a few fruits after if you still feel hungry. This is a healthier practice and will reduce the amount of leftover food you have to store as well.

Distribute to NGOs

If you are having a wedding party, family get together or office party, make sure you plan in advance for the excess food to be distributed to some worthy organization. In an office with a canteen, see what they do with their excess food. Cooked food has a lower shelf life. You can also help your office tie up with an NGO and get the food distributed to orphanages, old age homes or needy people. You can find out names of local NGOs that help distribute food in your area. One example is Feeding India, which is located in 30 Indian cities and aims to eliminate hunger. Robin Hood Army is another such organization that provides mid-day meals for school kids.

Share with others

A valuable lesson you can teach your child is to share food with neighbours and friends. This will teach them about sharing with others and also about not wasting food.

So, the next time you sit down to eat, think carefully before wasting even a single morsel of food on your plate. As the FAO keeps urging us, it is time to grow, nourish and sustain this world together. Our actions are definitely going to determine our planet's future.

Furthermore, restaurants like Dominos and Pizza hut are available all over the country. People of every age love the taste of these Italian dishes. Also, Italian dishes are famous for their’ cheese filling. Every dish is load with cheese. Which enhances the taste of these Italian dishes.

Indian cuisine – Indian cuisine is always filled with a lot of herbs and spices. Furthermore, the specialty of Indian dishes is, it is always filled with curries. Whether veg or non-veg the dishes are in curry form. Moreover, Indian cuisine has so many varieties of food that has further branches. The Branch consists of Mughal cuisine which is mostly of non-vegetarian dishes. Also, almost every Indian love Muglia dishes.

Chinese Cuisine – Chinese cuisine in India is also very popular. There are many Chinese theme-based restaurants here. Moreover, in these restaurants Chinese are preferable chefs because they can only give the perfect Chinese blend. Chinese cuisines have a wide variety of dishes. Some of them are Chinese noodles, fried rice, Dumplings, etc. Dumplings have a different name here. They go by the name of momos in India and people love the taste of it.

Importance of Food in Our Life

We cannot deny the importance of food in our lives. As it is the basic need to survive. Yet some people waste not thinking that there are still some people that do not get any of it. We should always be careful while taking a meal on our plates.

In other words, we should take only that much that our stomach can allow. Or else there will be wasting of food . In India there are many people living in slums, they do not have proper shelter. Rome – The fourth edition of the World Food Forum ( WFF ) flagship event, the largest annual gathering of agrifood systems stakeholders globally, opened today with a high-level ceremony at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome. Running from October 14 to 18, the event brings together global experts, young changemakers, investors, and visionary leaders to create new pathways for a sustainable, inclusive, and food-secure future.

“This year’s theme, 'Good food for all, for today and tomorrow,' reflects the core of FAO’s mission and brings together the importance of the Four Betters ,” said FAO Director-General QU Dongyu, officially kicking off the event. The forum will include sessions focused on youth, science and innovation, and targeted investments, which he considers "key elements for transformational change."

“This independent and neutral space, initiated and hosted by FAO, strives to create a better world through youth-driven transformation of global agrifood systems,” Qu explained, adding that he is inspired by the WFF's growth into a leading youth-led global platform since its launch in 2021.

Over the coming days, Qu urged young people — and the young at heart — to engage with FAO, voice their concerns, and fight for the issues that matter to their generation.

Global leaders engage

The opening ceremony was a powerful display of global solidarity, highlighting the shared commitment to addressing the challenges facing our agrifood systems. Influential leaders and young advocates delivered inspiring messages, stressing the urgent need for collaborative action.

High-level guests expressed their support for the World Food Forum’s three pillars -   Global Youth Action ,  Science and Innovation  and  Hand-in-Hand Investment   - and reaffirmed their countries' commitments to transforming agrifood systems.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization , highlighted key challenges to global food security, including hunger, climate change, and trade distortions, particularly in Africa and South Asia. She emphasized the need for agricultural trade reform through the WTO to make agrifood systems more resilient and sustainable. Okonjo-Iweala underscored the importance of forums like the WFF in fostering collaboration to address these issues.

King Mswati III of Eswatini emphasized the urgent need to transform agrifood systems to address hunger, malnutrition, and climate change. He praised the WFF focus on "Good Food for All, Today and Tomorrow," stressing the importance of self-sufficiency, sustainability, and international cooperation. The King urged immediate action to ensure resilient food systems and a hunger-free future for all.

King Letsie III of Lesotho called for urgent global action to address food security challenges, emphasizing the need for private sector investment, climate-resilient agriculture, and sustainable solutions. He highlighted how current food systems are failing to provide healthy diets for all and urged for stronger global cooperation. The King praised the FAO’s Hand-in-Hand Initiative as a vital tool to drive development and investment.

Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona, President of the Dominican Republic, highlighted in a video message the importance of sustainable agricultural practices and the role of small farmers in food production. He outlined key strategies, including enhancing agricultural production, promoting exports, and providing support for vulnerable populations.

Nyuma Boakai, President of Liberia, called for global collaboration to adapt to climate change, promote local food production, and establish social safety nets for vulnerable populations. He underscored that the WFF provides an opportunity for participants to reflect, deliberate, and commit to actions that can transform national and community agrifood systems.

In a video message, Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, President of Peru, stressed the importance of the WFF in addressing global hunger and food insecurity, noting that one in eleven people suffers from hunger. He outlined Peru's commitment to sustainable food systems, promoting policies to support family farmers, reduce food loss, and adapt to climate change.

Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados , said in a video adress that this year's World Food Day theme, "Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future," resonates with the Caribbean, where the high costs of healthy diets demand urgent action. The Prime Minister called for sustainable investments in agriculture and water management to enhance food security, emphasizing the importance of innovation and collaboration in transforming agrifood systems.

Miguel Díaz-Canel, President of Cuba, highlighted efforts to boost food production by increasing the cultivation of grains, sugarcane, and fruits to diversify the economy and enhance export capacity. He emphasized the importance of sustainable agriculture and responsible resource management, aligning these initiatives with national food sovereignty and security priorities.

Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bhutan,  acknowledged FAO's crucial role in transforming food systems and expressed Bhutan's commitment to overcoming agricultural challenges through innovative initiatives. He called for increased support for sustainable agricultural practices and innovative financing to ensure food security and better nutrition for all, particularly in vulnerable communities.

Santiago Peña Palacios, President of Paraguay, highlighted the urgency of addressing hunger and inequality, stressing the need for policies that guarantee food security for all. The president called for a collective international effort to ensure food security, underscoring Latin America's potential to lead in this endeavor, and emphasized the essential role of the FAO in promoting equitable access to food globally.

The three pillars

The 2024 World Food Forum continues to champion intergenerational collaboration and creativity through its three interlinked forums, each focused on a critical aspect of transforming agrifood systems:

WFF Global Youth Action Forum : This forum emphasizes the crucial role of youth in driving the future of food. It creates a dedicated space for young changemakers to lead discussions, share ideas, and advocate for solutions to key challenges such as hunger, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Through workshops, panels, and collaborative sessions, young leaders will have the opportunity to connect with policymakers and experts, empowering them to take action and innovate for a sustainable food future.

FAO Science and Innovation Forum : Bringing together scientists, researchers, and thought leaders from around the world, this forum highlights the importance of research and technological advancements in addressing agrifood systems challenges. Participants will explore cutting-edge innovations and scientific breakthroughs, with a special focus on leveraging technology to adapt to climate change, enhance food security, and improve sustainability. Collaborative sessions will encourage knowledge exchange and foster partnerships that can drive agrifood system transformation.

FAO Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum : This forum centers on fostering investment strategies and financial collaborations aimed at promoting sustainable and resilient agrifood systems. It facilitates dialogue between governments, investors, and development organizations to mobilize resources for initiatives that enhance food security, reduce poverty, and support sustainable agriculture. Discussions will focus on identifying and scaling up impactful projects and financing mechanisms to ensure that the necessary resources are available to achieve global food security goals.

Throughout the week, these forums will host engaging dialogues, workshops, and discussions across a wide array of topics, including policy, science, innovation, education, culture, and investment. By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, the World Food Forum aims to catalyze action, create meaningful impacts, and accelerate progress on local, regional, and global levels.

In addition to these pillars, WFF 2024 will feature the Mid-term Forum of the UN Decade of Family Farming , integrated into youth-led, technical, and policy discussions. This celebrates family farming as the foundation of diverse, innovative, and dynamic agrifood systems.

The forum will also address water scarcity in agriculture through a Rome Water Dialogue session and highlight Indigenous practices that support a sustainable food future during the week-long Global Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems.

All these activities coincide with World Food Day on October 16, under the theme “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future,” emphasizing the need for universal access to diverse, nutritious, affordable, and safe food.

WFF Exhibit: A showcase of solutions

Today, the World Food Forum exhibits also opened at FAO headquarters, offering a vibrant and diverse showcase of innovative solutions, initiatives, and artistic expressions related to agrifood systems transformation.

The exhibition features interactive displays, presentations, and cultural performances. FAO and WFF are hosting exhibits on topics such as seeds, media for agrifood systems transformation, the International Year of Camelids, and regional youth action, among many others.

Attendees can also explore external exhibits like the "Ristolab - Taste Buds Reactivation Station," which delves into the connection between food and culture, or discover innovative farming techniques through the "Hitchhiker's Guide to Hydroponics."
