The Program
Taylor Building Courtyard
Master of Laws programmes are taught on a modular basis over a twelve month period with wide subject choice. Four courses from within LLM programmes must be studied (30 credits each), plus a course in research methods (20 credits), and there is a compulsory dissertation (40 credits) which is written between June and September. To allow for diversity, on most LLM programmes, one of the four taught courses may be taken from a different LLM programme. For a full list of our LLMs, visit the Law School website . Because of its flexible modular structure it is possible to commence the LLM programme at the start of the winter semester in September or at the start of the spring semester in January.
On many of our programmes we also offer a Professional Skills route - a short, intensive course offering a practical alternative to the dissertation, with problem-based learning and job-focused training.
"The Professional Skills aspect of the programme was attractive as it bridged academia and application of knowledge, skill and experience". Yolander Persaud, LLM Oil and Gas Law with Professional Skills, November 2019
We offer a range of online short courses in law and some of our degree programmes can also be studied online:
LLM Dispute Resolution
LLM International Trade Law (with Dissertation or Professional Skills)
Oil and Gas Law (with Dissertation or Professional Skills)
The University
King's College from Elphinstone Hall
Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is one of the UK's most internationally distinguished universities. It has a student population of around 14,000 and a large international community of students drawn from 130 different countries. It has a beautiful central campus where ancient buildings sit side by side with modern facilities. The University has an excellent reputation for teaching quality and research, and, over the years, four Nobel Prizes have been awarded for work carried out or begun at Aberdeen. Students are attracted by our tradition which is rooted in our 525 year history - but we are focused firmly on the future and are at the cutting-edge of research in many fields. Our attraction also lies in the quality of our courses and teaching, the research opportunities we provide, our superb facilities as one of four ancient universities of Scotland, and for the care and support which we provide for all our students. The University promotes a multi-national, multi-faith community.

Doctor of Law
The Doctor of Law (DLaw) course aims to provide opportunities for professionals in law and related fields to study legal challenges in an academic environment, drawing on theory and practice to develop insight into familiar but critical issues and to generate innovative solutions.
The Doctor of Law (DLaw) is a professional doctorate which provides relevant professionals with the opportunity to take work-based problems, study them from a perspective that blends theoretical insights from academic study with the knowledge, practice, and skills they have acquired in their specialist field. The goal is to generate solution-oriented outcomes which are immediately relevant to their professional communities and work environment.
Mode of Study
Mode of Attendance
Course Length
- Online Learning
The course has been designed to help you return to academic work, reconnect with formal learning through carefully selected taught modules aims at strengthening your specialist knowledge and developing your research skills. You will study three research-related modules (if you are a full time student). In addition to that, you will select and study one module (30 credits) or two modules (15 credits each). You will also have regular meetings with your supervisory team.
Following completion of the taught modules in Year 1, and a successful Research Degree Transfer process, students will continue to work with their respective supervisory teams on the doctoral thesis for the remainder of the period of study.
Students will continue their research and the writing of a 60,000-word thesis which must focus on applied research. The outcome must necessarily include practical recommendations.
Modules and delivery order may change for operational purposes. The University regularly reviews its courses. Course content and structure may change over time. See our course and module disclaimer for more information.
Learning Methods
Throughout the taught stage of the course, the main mode of delivery will be lectures and interactive seminars, with appropriate support materials and discussion forums on the Virtual Learning Environment, CampusMoodle . The Law School encourages the utilisation of diverse range of teaching and learning methods (such as tutorials, forum interactions, online real time interactions, group work etc.) designed to encourage students to participate in the learning process. This approach will apply to full-time and part-time students. The group sizes for the DLaw will naturally be small and will therefore allow for effective interactions between learners and facilitators.

About the Programme
The University of Aberdeen is one of four ancient universities of Scotland. Law was a founding discipline when the University was established in 1495. Today, our PGR students benefit from both its ancient roots and its modern-day international reach and reputation. We have a vibrant, multinational academic and student community and our School of Law is at the forefront of innovative legal research, often influencing law and policy.
We welcome applications from students who wish to pursue research degrees in law, and we provide supervision in a wide range of legal subjects. There is an active research community, with students from many parts of the world registered for a PhD or LLM by Research. If you come to the University of Aberdeen, you too become a part of that esteemed history of excellence.
We offer a comprehensive training programme running throughout the three years of the PhD. This will provide you with the necessary knowledge, tools and skills to successfully complete your degree. From broadening your legal education, to training you to become a modern teacher and lecturer, and on to mock training for your viva voce and job interviews, we will support you throughout your PhD. You will be supported by a minimum of two advisers to guide you on your research project.
LLM by Research
The main requirement of this one year programme is to write a dissertation of 40,000 words. The programme is suitable for students who later aim to pursue a PhD or who are looking for an alternative to traditional taught LLM.
You will receive advanced training in research skills and methods and you will have two supervisors, who will guide and advise you.

- Centre for Scots Law
As a PGR student you will be invited to join one or more of our Research Centres.
Dedicated Law Library
