Hiking is an exciting hobby that has been enjoyed by people of all ages and of all levels from beginner to experienced. There’s a great feeling you get when you’re outside, perfect temperature, and you gaze out on the beautiful trail you’re walking on.
Over the past couple of years, hiking has been the fourth most popular outdoor activity in the United States. The more people there are enjoying hiking the better, so it’s great to see so many new faces out on the trails.
It’s hard to completely put into words what makes hiking a great hobby, but read on to see a list of my 7 favorite reasons to hike!
Hiking Provides Great Exercise
There’s nothing better than a hobby that doubles up as a good exercise routine as well. Considering how much walking is involved in hiking it’s no surprise that it will improve your endurance as well as muscle strength.
You can actually receive numerous health benefits from hiking like help with fatigue, sleep issues, creativity, and your overall happiness level. Hiking can also be a great workout for cardio if you decide to pick up the pace and push yourself on more challenging hikes.
Inexpensive Hobby
To begin hiking as a hobby, all you really need is a pair of supportive shoes or boots, a water bottle, and a place to hike. I’ve had a great time convincing my friends to head out to a trail with me for the first time, and they never have equipment that would be considered necessary.
Of course, once you get more into the hobby there is plenty of gear that can help improve the quality of your hikes . None of the following are required for a beginner hiker, but if you’re curious there are backpacks, hiking poles, flashlights, and hiking boots that more experienced hikers will use.
Allows You To Meet New People
Over the years, I’ve met some great people while hiking out on the trails . It’s a really nice community that offers plenty of chances to grow your hiking group and to gain some new experiences.
Since it’s a social activity, there are often local events held where you can meet up with other hikers. Every time you’re out exploring a new area you have the chance to meet new people who enjoy the same hobby as you.
Always New Places To Explore
I would bet that most people would be shocked to find out just how many places there are to hike in the city or town near them. One of the great things about hiking is that there are so many areas to hike for all levels of hikers. Whether you’re a beginner or have been hiking for years, you can find so great new places to take your next hiking trip.
There are also famous hiking trails like Acadia , Kalalau, and Greenstone that offer some of the best hiking experiences with the best views imaginable. These can be great motivators as well if you set goals for yourself and work to be able to travel around and do the best hikes in the world.
Lets You Connect With Nature
After being stuck inside working for most of the day, it can be hard to enjoy and appreciate the nature around us. Hiking is a great way to explore unknown areas and to fully get in touch and enjoy the feeling of nature and the beauty within it.
There are very few things that are better than reaching the top of a mountain and seeing the views of the world. Combine that with streams, lakes, trees , and everything else you can see during a hike to bond and connect with our natural surroundings.
Reduces Anxiety And Stress
There have been plenty of studies that show how great hiking is for de-stressing as well as reducing depression and anxiety for most people. In our everyday lives there are lots of things that cause us stress, so being able to get outside and escape these problems for a short while helps tremendously with our mental health.
Hiking can bring you joy and a boost in happiness that you wouldn’t be able to get through other activities. When hiking we get fresh air, beautiful views, and exercise which are great components to a healthy lifestyle.
You Can Hike Alone Or In A Group
The fact that hiking works great as a solo activity or with others is something that is pretty unique to hiking. A lot of other popular hobbies are usually done alone or actually require others to participate.
Hiking alone allows you to move at your own pace, hike for however long you want, and focus on relaxing and enjoying the outdoor experience. When you go hiking with others it can be a nice time to move at a more comfortable pace while bonding and sharing the experience with friends or family.

There is something magical about sliding on clunky boots and tromping through leaves, sticks and dirt.
Hiking has played a huge role in molding who I have become. Since I can remember my family and I have gone on hiking and camping trips.
Hiking has taught me many valuable life lessons. It has taught me how to live in the moment, enjoy the simple things, love dirty sweat and live without technology for a week or two.
Hiking has so much to offer people once they get past the idea of spiders, ticks, snakes and poison ivy. Some common benefits hiking has to offer anyone is reduced depression, weight control, muscle strength, cardiovascular and slows aging process. Who knew one could reap so many benefits from a hobby.
If you ask my boyfriend he will tell you I am the happiest when I am outside and nature is surrounding me. He would be 100 percent correct. Nothing brings me down when I hiking.
Almost every weekend I beg my boyfriend or family members to go hiking with me. I typically always take my two dogs; Ghost the Great Dane and Ekko the Corgi.
Ekko and I hike the same. We ontinuously run from one interesting thing to another without loosing energy or enthusiasm. Ghost on the other hand loathes me by mile two.
Hiking helps me clear my mind and see the positive things in life. It allows me to take a minute away from planning for the future and take a moment to enjoy the present. Hiking has been the one consistent thing in my life that has always brought me closer to others and myself.
I have a lot of fond memories from hiking that I could talk about forever but I am only going to share two. One time I was camping in the Grand Tetons in Wyoming and I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Half awake my sister and I stumbled towards the bathroom. As we turned to open the door a fox was blocking our way.
My sister and I turned and ran. I had a an idea to just use the men’s bathroom instead so I we went up the ramp to the bathroom and the fox came running around the corner charging at us. My sister and I screamed and ran back to camp almost peeing our pants. The next day we found out the campground had a pet fox.
The next story happened last month. My boyfriend and I were at Mt. Saint Francis hiking when we came across a fawn. The fawn walked up to us and let us pet her. This was by far one of my happiest moments.
Some of my favorite places I have hiked are Yellowstone National Park, Grand Tetons, Cumberland Falls, Fall Creek Falls, Breaks National Park and Charlestown State Park.
I hope to one-day hike at the Grand Canyon, Adirondacks, Yosemite and Zion.

Is hiking a hobby? Absolutely! It’s not just any hobby. It’s one that’s both fun for you and has a variety of physical and mental health benefits.
Hiking can help improve relationships and clean your lungs, even help keep your brain and memory sharp. It’s something that can be done alone or with friends.
Some people consider hiking a sport, but really it’s more of a recreational pursuit. It’s not especially competitive, but it can involve strenuous physical activity.

Below are 12 fun and scientifically proven benefits of picking up hiking as a hobby, which may be what you need if you’re new to hiking.
#1: Hiking is Inexpensive
If you want something free or really cheap to do, hiking is a great hobby. Hiking is just about as inexpensive as it gets.
Hiking can be completely free at certain parks, national forests and recreation areas. However, some hiking trails, like Old Rag , require a day-use permit.
State and national parks typically have an entry fee, but you can save money by purchasing an annual pass, like the America the Beautiful Pass.
The America the Beautiful pass allows free entry to all national parks, lakeshores, historical parks, military parks and more for one full year.
In Virginia, the Naturally Yours Passport allows free entry to all state parks for 12 months. Both are great deals for those who frequent state and national parks.
Hiking does not require expensive hiking gear. You also don’t need expensive clothes or footwear, though hiking shoes or boots are a plus on certain trails.
Just wear what’s comfortable, bring day hike essentials , including a first aid kit, trail snacks and a water bottle, and get out there for a day hike.
#2: Hiking is Easy to Start
The only real skill you need to start hiking is the ability to walk. Hikers don’t have to take classes or buy gear. Just place one foot in front of the other to hike.
Of course, there are plenty of workshops, classes and gear you can buy if you want to get serious about hiking or backpacking.

Exercise is great for improving and supporting your mental health. Hiking is no exception.

This study found that people who spend 90 minutes walking in nature showed decreased activity in a region of the brain associated with depression.

Take The Right Gear And Supplies With You

Not only will your feet be able to take you farther on the trail, but you’ll also be protecting them from injury or blisters and supporting your ankles as well, which is critical on uneven terrain and going up or down hills.

Plan Your Trip Ahead Of Time
Check your intended trail and the county or state park website if possible for notes about trail conditions, and check a map to see if there are water crossings or any other topographical features you should be aware of.
Consider the length of your hike and travel time to make sure you don’t hit any snags with your schedule and to ensure you’re back before sundown.
Lastly, check the trail’s difficulty rating and make sure it’s appropriate for your hiking skill and gear level.
Check The Weather
You don’t want to get caught in rain or snow without the right protection, especially on your first few hikes!
Check the forecast for the area you’ll be hiking in to make sure the weather will be great for your time on the trail.
If you’ll be hiking in winter (which we don’t suggest as an initial hike) make sure you have weather-appropriate waterproof boots and hiking gloves .
Don’t Overdo It
As exciting as hiking is, we don’t advise selecting a 10 mile hike up to a scenic waterfall for your first outing.
Pick simple and relatively flat trails, and keep the length of your hikes short at first to make sure you don’t extend yourself beyond your physical limits.

Initially, hiking costs nothing to get started because you can use many of the supplies you already have at home! At minimum you’ll need shoes, socks, a backpack for snacks, and a water bottle to get started (which are items most people already own). As you get deeper into the hobby of hiking you will want to invest in some hiking boots which can be found brand new for less than $100, but any additional gear is optional.
Thrift stores or online marketplaces like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Mercari are all great places to find inexpensive new or used hiking gear that will save you tons when getting started with hiking.

It’s no surprise hiking grew exponentially in popularity during the pandemic. With the opportunity to leave the house, feel the wind in your hair, and breathe fresh air, hiking was the perfect answer to escape from the harsh realities.
So, why should you pick up hiking as a hobby now?
Life’s stresses never go away. And spending time in nature decreases anxiety and stress, while hiking strengthens your heart, lungs, and muscles . But the benefits don’t end there.
This article provides five thoughtful reasons why we believe hiking is the best hobby, and you should start hiking today.

Hobbies are an opportunity to unplug from daily life. They reduce stress and enhance well-being while improving social connections and mental health — which is why hundreds of hobbies exist.
It’s easy to forget life is more than work and hectic errands. Hobbies are your reminder to enjoy the activities you love.
One positive outcome of the pandemic was a renewed interest in physical and mental health. In March 2020, the google search “list of hobbies” increased by 137%, and today still averages over twenty thousand searches a month.
And hiking tops many “best hobby” lists, including ours. So, Here are our five reasons you should start hiking as a hobby today:
1. The opportunity to explore new cities
New York City, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Miami always make the most traveled city list. That’s because most vacationers choose a city based on food and attractions.
But have you ever considered Asheville, NC ? Asheville offers breathtaking hikes with the Great Smokey Mountains to the West and two national forests along its borders. With thousands of miles of hikes — and hundreds of waterfalls to see — Asheville has become a destination for outdoor adventure seekers.
You can even hike to the Biltmore Estate, America’s largest home, built by the Vanderbilts in 1889.
But if you only wanted to be outdoors, you would go camping.
Asheville features live music and tons of restaurants to enjoy when you aren’t hiking. They even have two James Beard award winning restaurants.
And that’s just one city. What sounds like an Asheville commercial illustrates how many incredible cities many miss — and hikers enjoy.
Hiking opens up a new world of adventure travel. And you can still enjoy great food and attractions.
2. Hiking is an inexpensive hobby
As a woodworker, I know a thing or two about expensive hobbies. Hiking is one of the few hobbies you can enjoy with no money.
Of course, not everyone is fully prepared for a hike today, and you may not have the appropriate gear. But you can complete an easy hike on a well-maintained trail in gym clothes and cross-trainer shoes.
If you’re a serious hobbyist who wants to jump right in, here’s a breakdown of potential costs you can expect when starting hiking as a hobby.
The cost of hiking:
- Hiking boots: $60 to $150
- Hiking backpack: $50 to $250
- Hiking socks: $12 to $20
- Hiking pants: $25 to $50
- Hiking shirts: $20 to $50
- Trekking poles: $70 to $150
- First aid kit: $10
- National park annual pass: $80
It costs between $325 to $750 to visit REI and buy most of the quality gear you need. But a great pair of boots, some thick hiking socks — and the occasional $5 to enter a national park — should cost you $100, and last you hundreds of hikes.
Don’t run out and buy all the gear today. As your hikes become more challenging, you can slowly accumulate new hiking gear on an as-needed basis.
You can always get by wearing gym clothes on hikes . Just avoid denim jeans on hikes , since they absorb sweat, making for uncomfortable, soggy, chafing pants.
3. Choose your own adventure level
When hiking, a 5-mile trail can take two hours or five. The challenge of the hike is for you to decide.
Pick an intermediate uphill hike to work your calves and glutes, or an easy, flat hike to spend time in nature.
And a short hike doesn’t mean a boring one.
Some of the most beautiful hikes in the world are only an hour or two. And as your conditioning and hiking abilities grow, you can work up to more demanding hikes with bucket list endings.
The Havasu Falls and Havasupai Falls hike in Arizona is a 6-hour out-and-back hike through the Havasupai Indian Reservation to the stunning Havasu Falls. Most choose to camp or stay at the lodge before making the long trek back.
You can even climb Mount Whitney, a 21.5-mile hike up the highest summit in the lower 48. Summiting Mount Whitney takes 7 to 8 hours.
These hikes are incredibly tough, yet both yield entirely different results; The highest summit in the contiguous U.S. with breathtaking panoramic views or a historic trail to a hidden turquoise oasis of waterfalls in the desert.

4. Improve physical and mental health
Nature has a profound effect on our minds. The American Psychological Association found that just two hours of recreation in nature each week improves health and well-being. Regardless if it’s one day or along many.

My best advice to hiking beginners is to start slow and not push it past your limits. Waking up with sore calves or ending a hike with numb toes won’t entice you to get back on the trail next week.
Then, find your zen feature, like waterfalls, views, wildlife, or petroglyphs, and hike to that. Then find the next biggest waterfall and go hike to it.
We are blessed to have stunning nature around us. The more you search, the more you find extraordinary adventures awaiting.
