How to write an application letter in Nigeria

Among the skills to master when writing a letter of application in Nigeria is formatting. Proper formatting ensures that your letter is up to standards and the recipient can easily read it.

Amoo Abdulrazaq Abioye , a seasoned resume expert and freelance writer, shared with Legit.ng the essential components required to compose a compelling and attention-grabbing application letter. He said:

Research the company you are sending the application to. When you've all the details about the copy and the position you are sending the application for, this will give you an edge over another applicant because you will have a strong opening.

Abioye's go-to step-by-step list includes:

  • Strong Opening: The only way to grab the attention of HR (Human Resource) is to categorically state why the company will benefit from you and why your goal aligns with the company mission and vision statement. You can include some achievements from your previous companies in the opening, but make it concise.
  • The secondary paragraph should be your Uniqive Value Proposition (UVP); you have to showcase your skills here and how you can help the company better.
  • Brief and Concise: Don't use ambiguous words; make it clear and concise; your application letter read time should not be more than a minute. In contrast, the company can also see the value you are bringing.
  • Call to action: This is where most of us refer them back to resumes for more information and let them know you are available to answer any questions.

Do you need an application letter for employment?

In a scenario, when the job description does not include an application letter, such as some part-time jobs, factory jobs, or dispatch rider jobs writing one will help you highlight your skills and achievements at a glance and get the hiring manager’s attention.

What is a Job application Letter?

An application letter is a formal document written to a potential employer to express your interest in an open position. The job application letter highlights why you are a professional and an individual, showing your achievements and skills, and helping to get the attention of the hiring manager or recruiter responsible for reviewing applications.

This letter should be interesting enough to the recruiter or hiring manager, highlighting the key qualifications that make you a fit for the role, and creating thoughts in his heart to request an interview.

A job application letter also focuses on key competencies that set you apart from other applicants showing your familiarity with the role, and company to which you’re applying. This application letter shows how your personality, professional goals and aspirations align with the company’s goals.

Difference between a Cover Letter and an Application Letter.

  • In most cases the application letter and the cover letter perform almost the same function, they are different as an application letter is intended to stand alone, while a cover letter is usually sent alongside a CV or resume.
  • An application letter directly states your skills, competencies, personality, and goals as they align to the organization, while a cover letter highlights information on the CV or does not contain too much information about the job seekers because it is merely an introduction of the CV/resume
  • A cover letter contains a brief introduction that consists of three to four sentences about the potential hire/job seeker’s experience, skills, education, and accomplishments, stating clearly why the job seeker is the best candidate to fill the job. While an application letter may have an extensive introduction as it stands alone just like the CV.
  • A cover letter is written with the intention to capture the recruiter or hiring manager’s attention enough to review the CV or resume, thus inviting the job seeker for an interview. An application letter is mostly used by a job seeker to show interest in an unsolicited job.

How to write an Application Letter for a job in Nigeria

sample of a good application letter in nigeria

If you are not sure how to write an application letter for a job in Nigeria, you came to the right place. Read our best tips and look through some useful samples.

First, let’s clarify the terms. Application documents differ from country to country. Whereas in Europe and North America a cover letter typically accompanies a resume, an application letter stands on its own and therefore, is more in-depth. Nigerian employers use an application letter and a cover letter interchangeably. In this article, we’ll take a brief look at how to write an effective application letter and provide you with a sample for guidance. Check out some amazing and detailed writing guides and samples of a job application letter in Nigeria to explore the topic more deeply.

So if you are applying to a company, and in the job description they request either an application letter or a cover letter, you should prepare a resume/CV accompanied by a piece of writing that succinctly summarizes your best selling points and professional accomplishments.

Thus, an application letter follows the rules of formal writing. But if you use our recommendations, you will grab the hiring manager’s attention and stand out from a barrage of clichéd and half-hearted pieces.

How to Write an Application Letter in Nigeria

Before you start writing, first read these important tips.

  • Always write an outline, as it will inform your letter of the structure.
  • Write a draft and carefully polish it.
  • Pay special attention to the first and last sentences as they can leave a lasting impression or prompt a hiring manager to toss your letter in the trash.
  • Tailor your application letter to the vacancy requirements or at least to the company’s policy and vision.
  • Use a friendly tone and avoid complaining or being chummy.
  • Make it concise.

If you are about to write your first application letter, it will take you some time to find all the information you need, write a draft, and finally polish it by proofreading and using our tips. But in the long run it will pay off.

Now let’s look in greater detail at the stages of writing an application letter or cover letter for a job in Nigeria.

Outline. At this stage just jot down the titles of the paragraphs and what comes to mind on the spur of the moment. For example, your outline can use the following application letter format in Nigeria:

  • Company’s address
  • Opening sentence ( strong leadership, customer service, optimizing expenditures )
  • Reasons for writing ( my experience fit their job description )
  • Your qualifications and what you have to offer the company
  • Summarize and thank

Draft. To avoid being bogged down by little things like googling the company’s address and the names of the hiring manager and recruiter, write the bulk of the letter first. You can hone your whole draft during the final stages.

Forbes career counselor Robin Ryan advises against writing a generic letter. The fact that you should not copy and paste a random example of a job application letter in Nigeria goes without saying.

In the first paragraph, talk about your best qualities and most amazing results. Treat it as a 30-second elevator speech. Be concise and use only meaningful phrases without cliches and banalities.

In the second paragraph, elaborate on your professional experience, keeping in mind the employer’s needs. List your most impressive projects and jobs. If you are entry-level, you can mention your education, including SATs score, certificates and diplomas, awards, publications, etc.

In the third paragraph, express your admiration of the company and emphasize your fit with the company’s values, mission, and job requirements.

Polish your draft. After you compose your rough draft, read and reread it several times, weeding out all platitudes, empty phrases, and clichés. Daniel Victor from the New York Times advises against stating the obvious. For example, there is no point in saying that you are a “hard-worker” or have a “creative mind.” First of all, such statements are overused. Second, your ability to work hard will be obvious from the work you do.

Work on the first and last sentences. You should put more thought and consideration into wording it than an average candidate cares to do. For example, Ryan recommends not to open up your letter with overused phrases like “I’m applying for a vacancy advertised on the company’s LinkedIn page.” An application letter is short, so don’t waste space on vapid, generic sentences that say virtually nothing about you.

It will take you some time and research to craft an attention-grabbing opener that will immediately tap into the employer’s need and demonstrate your qualities. Even if you are not responding to a specific job description and are writing a cold letter, try to analyze the job you are applying for. As soon as you grasp what the employer wants to see in an employee in this position, you will know how to address it.

If your aim is to demonstrate your skills and work results, you should write something similar to this opener: “Twice an award holder for my superb selling skills at the Finn Group, I can bring my proven expertise in sales and product knowledge to increase revenue for the Diana & Co. sales team.”

When finishing the letter, focus on what you bring to the company rather than what you can take from them. That is why ‘looking forward to seeing you in person’ is just a waste. Conclude your letter with a promise:

‘I welcome the chance to discuss your current varnish and paint sales objectives and show you how my innovations and solutions at the Finn Group can translate into growth for Diana & Co.”

“Could we meet next week to discuss how my skills in software sales, leadership, and database management can help grow your revenue by 15% per year?”

“I would welcome the chance to discuss the increased sales and reduced costs I would bring to your company.”

Tailor your application letter to the vacancy requirements. After the bulk of your application letter is written, keep polishing it. Check out whether your descriptions and mentioned skills fit the job descriptions that you can find on the company’s website or LinkedIn page. You need to show that you understand the company’s needs and job duties and are ready to deliver.

Proofread your letter. When you re-read your letter several times, make sure you conform to a Nigerian application letter format. At this stage, you should know the name of the hiring manager to go beyond a generic ‘Dear Sirs’ or ‘To whom it may.’ Shorten overly-wordy sentences and check each sentence for clarity. Zap out any slang or colloquial words. Your tone should be friendly and light yet formal.

Alicia Benton General Manager Bonbon Group 907 Better Street Los Angeles, CA 90003

Dear Ms. Benton,

After 5 years in leadership positions in two respectable and award-winning Canadian restaurants, I can offer my new employer improved customer service, efficient stock control, and innovative twists on classics.

I am aware that right now you have no vacancy for a sous-chef. But having looked through your previous job ads, I decided to let you know that I can be a perfect fit if your restaurant network is looking to branch out. I have the potential for quick growth, as I rose from line chef to sous chef within a few months and from sous chef to head chef within a year. With a focus on constant upskilling of team members and a rigorous hygiene routine, I also contributed to increased sales by 30% by finding two large clients for catering at large-scale events.

Obtaining the chef position at the Bonbon Group restaurant would be a challenge and a dream come true at the same time. The Bonbon Group is industry-famous for its performance, career opportunities, and utmost care for clients. I share these qualities and would love an opportunity to work for your success. Could we set up a meeting next week to discuss how my skills in kitchen management and leadership can help make your restaurant even more famous than it is now?

Best regards,

Alex Wind +1 510-401-1892 [email protected]

Wrapping up

As you can see, a clear-cut structure makes writing an application letter less difficult than one might fear. Yet, you will definitely need some preliminary research. If you feel paralized by the fear of a blank page, just start jotting down whatever comes to your mind. You can reword and polish it later. Or use the Internet, where you can find many online application letter builders that can provide you with an excellent template that you can edit and make more personalized.

Your application can be rather simple and concise and still land you a job interview if you aim to make it unique and avoid clichés. Do not go over one page. Proofread it many times. And treat it as an important piece of writing that has a pinch of your personality.

What Is an Application Letter?

An application letter, also called a cover letter, is a formal document usually sent with a resume or curriculum vitae (CV) . It is used to show that you are interested in a job and to give more details about your skills and experience. An application letter aims to introduce yourself to a potential employer and convince them to read your resume and consider you for the job.

Usually, an application letter has the following parts:

  • A header with the date and your contact information
  • A greeting that tells the reader who the letter is for (if possible)
  • An opening paragraph that says why you are writing and why you want the job.
  • Body paragraphs that show your relevant skills and experiences and explain how they match the job’s needs.
  • A closing that says you’re grateful for the chance to apply and gives your contact information in case they want to get in touch.

Application letters are important because they are often the first time a job seeker meets a potential employer. It is important to make a good first impression. Show off your skills and qualifications by writing a well-written application letter. This makes it more likely that you’ll be asked to come in for an interview.

How to Write an Application Letter in Nigeria

Customize the letter to fit the job and the company.

Customizing the letter to the job and company is one of the most essential parts of writing a successful application letter in Nigeria. This means you need to do your research and use specific language and examples to show that you are qualified for the job and a good fit for it.

First, learn as much as possible about the company and job you are applying for. You can learn about a company’s mission, values, and culture by looking at their website, social media accounts, and any other publicly available information. Also, look at the job posting or ad to find out exactly what qualifications and experience the employer wants.

When writing your letter, use specific language and examples from your research to show how your qualifications and experience fit with the job and the company. For example, if the job description stresses the importance of working as a team, give specific examples of how you have worked on successful team projects in the past. If the company values innovation, talk about times in your career when you creatively solved a problem.

Also, using the right keywords for the job you’re applying for is important when you talk about your qualifications and experiences. This will show the employer that you read the job ad and that you are a good fit for the job.

Also, make sure to send the letter to the right person and use the right title for them. If you can’t find the person’s name, you can always use a general greeting like “Hiring Manager” or “Recruitment Team.”

By making your application letter specific to the job and company, you can show interest in the position and have the skills and experience the employer seeks.

Format and Layout Your Application Letter

When writing an application letter in Nigeria, it is important to consider how it is formatted and laid out. A letter with good formatting is easy to read and looks nice, which can help make a good impression on the employer.

Most application letters should be one page long. This lets you show off your qualifications and experience while keeping the letter short and easy to read.

The way the letter is put together should be clear and easy to understand. Start with a header that has your name, the date, and how to get in touch with you. After that, start with a salutation that tells the reader who the letter is for (if possible). Introduce yourself and tell the person why you’re writing and why you want the job. Use bullet points or short paragraphs to show off your skills and experiences. Close the letter by thanking them for the chance to apply and giving them your contact information in case they want to follow up.

Use a clear, easy-to-read font like Times New Roman or Arial for the best layout and typeface. Use 11 or 12-point font, and make sure to double space. Align the text to the left, and make sure there is enough space between sections and paragraphs.

When you’re putting together your application letter, it is also important to check for mistakes and make sure everything is lined up. This will help make the letter look nice and make it easy to read.

If you follow these rules for formatting and layout, your application letter will be well written and easy to read. This will help you make a good impression on the employer and make it more likely that you will be asked to come in for an interview.

Language and Tone for a Nigerian Application Letter

When writing a letter of application in Nigeria, it is important to use the right words and tone. The letter should always be written in a formal, professional, and positive way.

First, the letter must be written in a formal, businesslike way. This means you should not use slang, colloquialisms, or language that is too casual. Instead, use clear, precise language to describe your skills and experience.

Second, keep the letter’s tone upbeat and confident the whole time. Don’t say anything bad about the job or the company, and don’t say anything that sounds like an apology.

Third, be aware of Nigeria’s culture and traditions. it is important to use respectful language and a polite tone and to address the person you’re writing to with an honorific.

Lastly, you should check your application letter for grammar and spelling mistakes before you send it in. This will make sure that your letter looks nice and is written in a professional way.

By paying attention to the words and tone you use in your application letter, you will be able to talk about your qualifications and experience in a formal, professional, and positive way. This will help you make a good impression on the employer and make it more likely that you will be asked to come in for an interview.

How to End and Follow Up on an Application Letter

In Nigeria, the closing and follow-up of an application letter are essential steps that can help you make a good impression on the employer and increase your chances of getting an interview.

When you close the letter, thank the employer for giving you the chance to apply and for taking the time to read it. Make sure to give your contact information, like your phone number and email address, so that they can get in touch with you. You can also suggest a meeting or interview and let them know you are available.

it is important to follow up with the employer after sending your application letter. You can do this by sending an email or calling to find out where your application is in the process. This shows that you care about the job and are interested in it, and it also makes a good impression on the employer.

it is important to be polite and respectful when following up. Try not to be pushy or mean. Instead, show that you are interested in the job and ask what else the employer needs from you.

You can also use the follow-up as a chance to remind the employer of your skills and experience and why you’d be a good fit for the job.

By using these tips for closing and following up in an application letter in Nigeria, you can make a good impression on the employer and increase your chances of getting an interview.

How to Write an Application Letter in Nigeria

Still don't have an application letter? Time to put it right and increase your chances of finding a job in Nigeria! All the essential tips are in our guide.

They say that the CV and application letters are a blast from the past, and there is no point in writing them. There are numerous articles on the internet claiming that recruiters and hiring executives don’t even read candidates’ application letters, but that’s not entirely true. What if we told you there was something you could do to increase your chances of landing that dream position by about 95%? Well, there is. It is your perfect cover letter for a job in Nigeria. If you still don’t have it, you are depriving yourself of an excellent opportunity to fend off the competition and bring the employment of your dreams closer. In this guide, you will find the top advice on how to write an application letter for a job in Nigeria, what winning points to include, the typical mistakes to avoid, how to format it, and what tricks to apply to catch the attention of the employer.

What is an application letter?

Before you find how to write a cover letter in Nigeria, you should know what this document is and what purpose it serves. Essentially, an application letter is a piece of documentation that serves as an add-on complementing your CV. Since a CV (or resume) is all about facts, this add-on is intended to provide additional information in a more conversational tone to make a good first impression and to communicate the applicant’s personality, enthusiasm, and professional skills to the prospective employer. An application letter's objective is to make the reader (the hiring executive) curious enough to want to read your resume . Simply put, an application letter is an advertisement, and what you’re trying to sell is your qualifications, strengths, and experience for the target position.

A practical application letter:

  • Tells the employer who you are
  • Highlights the critical parts of your resume
  • Demonstrates your writing skills
  • Shows how your background, professional skills, and experience are relevant to the position
  • Draws attention to your achievements
  • Tells the employer how to get in touch with you by email, phone, mail, etc.

Recruiters and HR staff are busy people; they receive dozens of job applications every day. Imagine how much time they would need to read each application in great detail. Most recruiters open an application letter for employment and read it for about 30-40 seconds. If they are impressed with what they read, they will move on to the resume. If not, the application ends up in the trash can. Let's suppose there are three candidates for the post. They all have well-written resumes, rich industry experience, strong academic backgrounds, etc. What would you do if you were an employer? Call all of them in for an interview? A wise employer knows the value of time, reads the candidates’ application letters in detail, and chooses the one that perfectly fits the organization's needs and requirements. A well thought out application letter for a CV is an excellent opportunity to move the needle.

What makes an application letter stand out from the others? This document is too important to just submit any old document. Even though the process is time-consuming, there is good reason to craft one specifically for the position. If a prospective employer gets the sense that they are reading a one-size-fits-all template, the author’s chances of getting hired immediately go down to zero.

Types of Cover Letters

To start with, let’s check the main types of cover letters and discuss the purpose of each. There are three types: application letter, prospecting letter, and networking letter.

What to Include in Your Application Letter

As was mentioned earlier, the purpose of an application letter is to strengthen your CV contents without duplicating or rehashing information. So what should a proper application letter include? Arm yourself with the following checklist.

Your name and contact details

Start your application letter with your contact information, including your full name, the date of your application, your postal address (street, city, state, zip), phone number, and email address.

Just imagine an application letter that starts with:

We can agree that this is now how a professional email address should look. If you don’t have a professional email, hurry up and create one using a free email service. Make it straightforward and simple – your first and last name, for example.

Recipient’s name and contact details

Next, include the name of the recipient of your application letter, the name of their company, the postal address of the company (street, city, state, zip), and their contact details (contact phone number and email address).

Search on Google, Linkedin, or on the official website of the company/organization (Contacts/About Us sections). If you have trouble finding the information you need, call the HR office and ask for the hiring manager’s name. Try not to use “To whom it may concern” in the beginning of your application letter; it sounds like “Whoever” and shows a lack of interest in the job right off the bat.

Specify the title of the job you're applying for

You should include the title of the available vacancy for which you are applying. It is viable to include the job title on a separate line at the start of your application letter (e.g. “Regarding: Application for Sales Executive position”), or in the opening paragraph (e.g. “I am writing to apply for the Sales Executive position”).

Indicate your relevant skills and experience

Highlight your skills and experience without rehashing the descriptions in your CV. A shortlist is a perfect idea for this. Be sure to use measurable metrics (if possible) to support your statements.

Summarize why you are right for the job

Keep in mind that you have to reinforce your skills or experience with relevant items from your resume. Mention jobs where you’ve used the skills and experiences that you list. Explain to the prospective employer why you are a perfect fit for the position. Be specific and honest; don’t exaggerate your accomplishments. Think not about what the employer and organization can do for you but what you can do for the organization and the employer. Try to identify the company's issues — the problems that you, as a new-hire, could solve. Emphasize your relevant skills and experiences that will actually help the employer. Think over solutions to the most challenging issues of the organization. Impress the prospective hirer with your readiness and willingness to contribute to the development of their company.

Use the right tone

The tone you use will change depending on the company to which you are sending your application. Some modern companies appreciate a creative approach to application letters and CVs, while others favor a strict negotiation and appreciate a formal document. Make sure you know what the company’s “voice” is like. Before writing an application letter to a company, first find out what the company is like by reading materials on their official website. You could also browse their social media pages to see what kind of tone they use when addressing the public.

Complete your appeal with a strong finishing touch

Your closing lines should be a call to action. Closeout your letter appropriately by conveying the right amount of respect to the recipient and asking them to contact you.

Here are some standard ways to sign off:

  • Sincerely yours
  • Best regards
  • Kind regards
  • Thank you for your consideration

Never close your appeal with the following:

  • Text me back when you get a chance
  • Any sort of abbreviations
  • Any emoticons

What to Avoid in Your Professional Application Letter

Don’t let grammar mistakes and typos slip through.

It’s often difficult to notice mistakes and typos in your own writing without a fresh look. Ask your friends and/or relatives to read your application letter carefully and review your text for typos. Other ways to correct mistakes include grammarly.com, the built-in “Spelling and grammar” tools in word processors, various extensions, and third-party tools designed to help catch errors in your writing. With so many options, there is no excuse to have any mistakes in your application letter. And always double check the spelling of the company name, the job title, the recipient’s name, and the position.

Don’t copy paste

We’ve already highlighted that an application letter is an add-on or extension for the CV. It is intended to communicate dry facts from the resume in a conversational way. Rephrase those facts instead of copy-pasting. Remember, a good CV is the brain, and a good application letter is the beauty.

Don’t write a memoir

Do not overuse “I” in any form while crafting your document. An application letter is not a memoir or an autobiography “I, me, myself”; it is about the employer and how you can help them, not about you.

Don’t make jokes and inappropriate jests

Humor is highly subjective and can easily be misunderstood. Nevertheless, using your wit and creativity is not prohibited. Be yourself and don’t force things.

Don’t mention your other job applications

Your aim here is to convince the employer that you want this particular job in this specific organization. Of course, you’re applying for several jobs hoping to land one of them. But there is no good reason to tell employers that you’ve sent applications to a row of other companies.

Don’t mention your previous salary or salary expectation

It is unethical and amateurish to talk about salary in any way, shape, or form. Never mention salary unless you are asked.

Instructions for Writing an Effective Application Letter for a Job

The general structure of an amazing application letter looks like this:

  • Header: contact section
  • Introduction

Let’s demonstrate this structure in action.

[Your Full Name]

[Street, City, State, Zip]

[Phone Number]

[Recipient’s Full Name]

[Recipient’s Company Name]

[Recipient’s Phone]

[Recipient’s Email]

Dear [Recipient],

Draw the reader’s attention with your opening paragraph. Introduce yourself, explain why you are contacting the employer, mention how you learned about the organization or job posting, and explain why you aspire to work for the organization.

Emphasize why you want to work with the employer. Explain your interest in the organization, its reputation, area of specialty, or public service. Describe what you can bring to the role, and provide examples of skills you’ve developed and the achievements you’ve enjoyed that are relevant to the job description. Be specific and honest –don’t exaggerate your accomplishments. Highlight your experience without rehashing the descriptions in your CV. List your achievements using “first”, “second”, “third”, etc. if need be. Tell the prospective employer why you’re specifically attracted to them and their work, and show that you’ve done the research and understand both the organization's mission and how it carries out its work. Identify the key issues facing the company — the problems that they need a worker they hire to solve. Emphasize your relevant skills and experiences that will actually help the employer. Show genuine and informed enthusiasm for the position.

Mention that you've enclosed your CV and look forward to hearing from the firm. Thank the employer for taking the time to consider your application and sign off:

Yours sincerely,

[Your Name]

Additional tips for writing a winning application letter for employment

  • Keep your letter short. Do not exceed one page or 300 words total. Be concise — you aren’t writing a memoir;
  • Be organized – list out your strengths one-by-one;
  • Support your stated skills and experience with numbers;
  • Avoid cliches;
  • Stick to the Nigerian application letter format . Use reasonably sized fonts like Times New Roman, Cambria, Georgia, Arial, Calibri, or Verdana— they are easy on the eyes;
  • Use power verbs, or as they are also called, “doing words”, to charge your application letter. Words like Managed, Increased, Negotiated, Resolved, Improved, etc. show your proactivity and efficacy. But remember: do not oversell yourself by exaggerating your accomplishments. Be wise and honest.

How to Edit an Application Letter for a Job Search

To avoid writing a new application letter for every organization from scratch, create a “master application letter” with relevant static information. By static, we mean things like your personal and contact info, your skills, and closing words. Depending on the organization and job opening, you edit it appropriately. This approach saves time and nerves.

For example, the templatized “master application letter” might look like this:

I am writing to express my excitement about the [Insert Job Title Here] position at [Insert Company Name Here]. I am convinced that it was fate that I found the vacancy posted on [Insert Source Here]. [Custom text about how you admire the company and the way it does its business]

I’d be a great [Job Title] because:

1. [Your relevant skill/competency 1] + [Explanation with numbers]

2. [Your relevant skill/competency 2] + [Explanation with numbers]

3. [Your relevant skill/competency 3] + [Explanation with numbers]

[The bottom line concluding why you’re the right person for the position]

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the [Insert Job Title Here] position and show you how my success and set of relevant skills can translate into growth for [Insert Company Name Here]. You may contact me at any time!

You’ve seen the job opening and are excited about the possibility of being considered for the role. But first, you need to write a cover letter. This can be a daunting task.

In this post, we’ll walk you through how to write an application letter for a job in Nigeria. We’ll cover everything from formatting to content. So whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been writing cover letters for years, this post is for you. Let’s get started!

You want to write an application letter that stands out from the rest. So how do you do that?

First, you need to understand the format of a Nigerian application letter. It should be written in a business letter format and should be concise and to the point.

Next, you need to explain why you’re writing the letter. What position are you applying for, and why are you a good fit for the job?

Then, list your qualifications and experiences that make you a good candidate for the position. Be specific, and don’t be afraid to brag a little bit. After all, you want to show the employer that you’re the best person for the job.

Finally, thank the employer for their time, and let them know that you’re looking forward to hearing from them.

How to Start Your Application Letter

sample of a good application letter in nigeria

You’re about to apply for a job and know you need to write a cover letter. But where do you start?

Well, the first step is ensuring you understand the company’s culture and the position you’re applying for. This way, you can tailor your letter to match the company’s values and the job requirements.

Next, it’s important to introduce yourself and state the position you’re applying for. Be clear and concise, and make sure to highlight your skills and experience.

The introduction is followed by the body of the letter, where you can go into more detail about your qualifications. Finish up by thanking the company for their time, and be sure to attach your resume!

How to End Your Application Letter

Ending your application letter in the right way is very important. You want to leave a good impression and make sure the reader knows what you expect next.

Here are some tips for ending your letter:

– Thank the reader for their time and consideration.

– Mention that you look forward to hearing from them soon.

– Reiterate your interest in the job or position.

– Express your appreciation for their time.

How to Format Your Application Letter

Now that you understand the purpose of an application letter and the different types available, it’s time to learn how to format your own letter.

Check out the example below to see how it’s done.

[Your Name]  [Current Address] [Contact Number] [Email Address]                                                                              [Date] [Employer Name] [Company Address] Dear [Employer Name], [ Purpose Of Writing: Topic ] I am writing in response to your job advert that was posted on [Website Name]. I am very interested in the position and believe I have the necessary skills and experience to be a valuable asset to your team. I have attached my resume for your perusal and would appreciate it if you could contact me for an interview at your earliest convenience. Thank you for your time and consideration. ’Yours Faithfully, [Your Signature] [Your Name]

What to Include in Your Application Letter

When it comes to application letters, there are a few key things you need to include. Here are eight items you should always include:

-Your name, address, and contact information

-The name of the position you’re applying for

-The reason you’re interested in the position

-Your work history and qualifications

-A brief explanation of your education

-Your skills and abilities

-A list of your references

What Not to Include in Your Application Letter

When you’re writing an application letter, it’s important to remember that you’re selling yourself to the company. This is your chance to show them what you can offer, so don’t include anything that’s going to work against you. Here are six things you should never include in your application letter:

Don’t mention your weaknesses

This is not the time or place to be humble. If you don’t have any strengths, then don’t mention anything at all.

Don’t regurgitate your resume

You should never send the same letter to every company. Instead, customize each letter specifically for the job you’re applying for.

Don’t make any grammar mistakes

Typos and spelling errors will make you look lazy and unprofessional. So take the time to triple-check your letter before you send it off.

Don’t lie

This one should be obvious, but don’t lie about your qualifications or experience. The company will eventually find out, and you’ll only be called in for an interview so they can fire you.

Don’t include excessive detail

Keep your letter concise and to the point. You want to show the company that you’re knowledgeable about the position, but you don’t need to go into too much detail.

Don’t wait until the last minute

Give yourself enough time to write a great application letter. Rushing through it will only result in a sloppy letter that won’t make a good impression.

Writing an application letter is one important step in the job application process, especially in Nigeria, where there is relatively high competition in the job market.

About 45% of managers have rejected qualified individuals because their application letter was poorly written.

Furthermore, it might also interest you to know that 68% of hiring managers have said they take the cover letter into consideration when deciding on interviews.

This has highlighted the vital role a well-written cover letter plays in the job application process, as it can impact hiring decisions to a large extent.

A well-written application letter can make an excellent impression and help you secure an interview with the organization.

In this publication, we will walk you through the vital steps to writing a captivating application letter customized for the Nigerian job market.

Finally, we will give a sample of an application letter, which can be a guide for creating an application letter for any position.

Overview of Application Letter

An application letter, also known as a cover letter, serves as an introduction to your resume, stating your skills, qualifications, certifications, and interest in a particular job.

The application letter is submitted along with your resume or curriculum vitae (CV) and all other required documents.

These documents will be properly assessed by the organization, which will then decide if you will be invited for an interview.

Purpose of writing an application letter

Before crafting a cover letter, you must understand the purpose it serves, which will guide you in writing a standard letter.

The following are the key purposes an application letter serves:

  • It introduces you to the employer, who is looking for the best candidate that will help in achieving the organizational goal.
  • The application letter states your qualifications, experiences, and the reason why you are the best person for the available job position.
  • It allows you to explain in detail any caveat in your resume, such as an employment gap.
  • Allows you to sell yourself as the best individual by stating the specific job requirements.
  • You have the ability to show your ability to communicate professionally and efficiently.

Before crafting a cover letter, it is important that you research the company and the job role you will be applying for.

Knowing about the company’s culture, values, and the requirements specified for the job will help you in writing your letter to meet the employer’s expectations.

So in this article, we will be looking at a step-by-step approach on how to write an acceptable application letter in Nigeria.

How to write an application letter in Nigeria

To write an acceptable application letter in Nigeria, you need to take heed of the following steps, include;

  • Research & Understanding the company and Job role.

Decision on the Application format narration

Address heading of the letter.

  • Address the letter to the HR, Hiring manager & recruiter.

Introduction describing your interest

Describe your relevant experience and qualifications.

  • Include key aspects that stand you as an applicant.
  • Express gratitude for an opportunity
  • Close the letter
  • Research & Understanding the company and Job Role

One very important step in writing an application letter in Nigeria is by making research on the company of your choice. Before you write an application letter you need to know what the role you are applying for entails, you also need to have a deep understanding of the organization you are applying to.  Apart from this, you need to know the goals you want to achieve in the organization and it must tally with what the company wants.

You must also put it in mind that many people will be applying for the job, so when you are planning, you must gather facts that will make your application unique and stand out among the others. It must be captivating enough to be able to convince the prospective employer on why he or she should employ you. The hack for doing this correctly is by creating a summary of how you want it to be, you must not make it too complex to comprehend and understand, it must remain simple but very unique.

After you have written on how you want your application letter to go, that is, the summary, noting in mind that it must include comprehension of the organization, the job you are applying for, and what it demands, the next thing you need to do is write a rough draft of your application letter putting the above-mentioned facts in mind. It’s important to do this before writing the original one to avoid mistakes. After you have made the draft, you can now be on the lookout for where you made constructed some sentences wrongly, misspelt words or wrong punctuations. This will help in writing the original copy.

After you must have written the original letter, what is next?. You need to contemplate on a suitable application header. Handling the caption of the application letter is very crucial, but greeting I.E salutation is an area that the employer is probable to see first before looking at the content. So with this in mind, you must not fumble with the salutation.

Below are some important guidelines on salutation before you commence writing your application letter.

  • Include a comma at the end of your citation
  • If the number of people you are addressing in the letter exceeds one, then you are to address them as ‘Dear Sirs/Madams’.
  • If the name of the receiver of the application is unknown, you should then address the employer or hirer as ‘ Dear Sir/Madam’.
  • If the receiver’s gender (hiring manager or recruiter) is not known, you should address them as he/she with the full name. Like;  ‘Dear Peter Andrews’ .

Addressing the letter to the employer, hiring manager & recruiter

Your manner of approach in addressing the employer, hiring manager, or recruiter of the organization speaks a lot. One important factor to consider us treating them with respect, don’t just write anyhow but write in a way that shows responsibility. Be courteous and use formal language. Writing of local dialects and jargon should not be included in the letter. Also, do not use words that are not clearly expressed or easy to be understood.

This step involves you giving a precise and detailed explanation as to why you should be given the job. Your reasons must be very convincing enough to make the employers want to give out the job to you. It should include your interests and what you hope to achieve for the company. Another fact is that the number of people that turn in an application for a job is usually many, and so the employer might not have time to read your application letter word for word, that’s why you have to make it apt instead of beating around the bush and saying unnecessary things. The purpose of the letter should be described in the first paragraph because it is where the employer reads through first.

Apart from writing the salutation and reasons why you should be considered for the job, you also need to include the relevant qualifications you have. This must not be faked because you will need to present the documents of your qualifications to them, and it will be a total waste of time if you are not able to attest to it. You can also include relevant places you have worked in to show your years of experience. So you must make sure you have the right skills the company or organization is looking for. You can also go by stating how passionate you are about the job and how you are ready to aid the company in being one of the best among its contemporaries.

In case you are sending a printed copy of the application letter to the employer or organization, you have to make sure the paper used for this purpose is a quality paper, it should not be an anyhow- kind- of paper. After writing, don’t just fold the paper and put it in an envelope. Endeavor to go through it at least two more times to check out for grammatical errors and spellings. If all the above-mentioned guidelines have been put in place and you are satisfied with what you have written, you can then go ahead to fold it in a neat and quality envelope.

Table of Contents

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a single-page letter you attach to your application.

A cover letter is meant to summarize all the details you have listed in your resume.

Therefore, it is required to apply for every job except there is a specific instruction from the employer not to attach a cover letter to the resume you submit during an application process.

Your cover letter is expected to be in line with the job you are applying for.

That is to say; the cover letter will have to display your knowledge of what the job involves and how your competence and skillsets can meet the need of the company you are applying to.

Tips to Make Your Cover Letter Stand Out

Find out who to address the cover letter to.

Avoid making the mistake of many job seekers. Don’t address your cover letter with “To whom it may concern.”

Go the extra mile to get information about the right person the cover letter should be directed to.

Note that this will take some of your time. Nevertheless, it is worth it.

It is possible that the name of the addressee is not included in the job advertisement. What you have to do here is to call any contact on the advert belonging to the company or call the advertiser to get more information.

After you are sure about the right person, the cover letter must be addressed to – use either “Mr.” or “Ms.” and their last name.

Get the necessary information about the job

Since you know where to address the cover letter, try to find more information about the employer’s expectations.

This will equip you with the right words to use to court their attention.

Furthermore, you can contact create a correspondence with the company where you can ask to know more about the job description. Note down the answers you get and ensure that they define the content of your cover letter.

Get more information about the company

Information about the company is the last thing to find out before proceeding to draft your cover letter.

With this information, you can easily win the employer’s heart with a cover letter that meets his expectation.

Here are some useful tips on how to get information about a company :

  • Use the name of the company as the keyword to look for information online.
  • Once you get the link to the company’s website, click on the “About us” page. This will give you the full details of what the company stands for in terms of service and value.
  • In case the company’s name is not included in the job advert you saw, call the recruitment agency in charge to ask about the name of the company and other information you may like to get.

Essential Factors to Make Your Cover Letter Professional

Make it easy to read and understand.

Understand that a cover letter is for you to sell your skills and not the number of vocabulary you can speak. Use simple expressions that are easily understood compellingly.

Also, beautifully organize the content using a font of 12 font. Simplicity is key.

Make it short

Avoid writing too much. A cover letter shouldn’t exceed one page. An employer will not have that luxury of time to spend reading just your cover letter. For this reason, your cover letter should be about 300-500 words. Therefore, always ensure that you say the most important things that can help you get the job.

Tailor it to the company and the job

One interesting thing about the corporate world is that different companies have a particular need they are trying to meet.

This defines the caliber of people they look out for during the application process.

On your end, write a cover letter that shows that you have a good sense of awareness about a particular company’s goal at a time and explain how your skillets can move them towards achieving the goal.

Remember the different parts of an essay you were taught in school.

The knowledge is very relevant in writing your cover letter. The way you write your introduction, body, and conclusion has a long way to make your application stand out.

You can see the   application process for jobs at the United Nations.

That was the question Linda asked me while we were hunting the internet for jobs that would add value to our lives.

Many job applicants do not understand why they should write an application letter when applying for a job since they believe they may simply send their resumes.

Although your CV has all the information a recruiter needs to know about you, it may not always be enough to help you land the job of your dreams.

Your CV may be excellent at demonstrating that you have the skills and education necessary to succeed in a given position, but it may fall short of convincing a potential employer that you are the ideal candidate for the job.

Putting your hopes up too high that you’ll get hired is risky as there are certainly several other qualified individuals scrambling for the same opportunity.

This is when the application letter enters the picture. Including an application letter in addition to your resume will help you impress hiring managers as It demonstrates your exceptional writing abilities, distinguishes you from other applicants, and demonstrates that you went above and beyond.

A job application letter is a formal document that is sent to a potential employer to show that you are interested in a job. An application letter is usually sent on its own and not with another document.

The majority of the time, an application letter isn’t sent until after you’ve seen an advertisement for a job. It’s sent even if there isn’t an advertisement. The CV and the application letter both serve the same purpose.

Definitely, you should write an application letter if you want to get a job. But that is not the only thing you should think about before you write an application letter.

Whenever you see a job ad that looks interesting, the next thing is to write an application letter right? When you write an application letter only, this doesn’t work very well. Employers will not give up on the CV and cover letter and give you a letter to write.

An application letter is different from a CV and a cover letter in how it is written. When the employer doesn’t ask you about the job, you should write an application letter. When there is no job ad or posting.

For example, if you are looking for a job and you have a list of top companies that you would like to work for, you don’t have to wait for a job posting to show that you want to apply for that job. You can just say that you want to apply right away. You can send a job application to a lot of different companies by email.

How to Write a Simple Application Letter in Nigeria for a Job in 10 Steps

These tips will show you how to write a good application letter in Nigeria, so read them.

  • Write an Outline first
  • Write a draft from your outline
  • Use a friendly voice
  • Make it short and straightforward
  • Job applicants should tailor their cover letter for a job based on the job description and the needs of the company
  • Use typed documents instead of handwritten
  • Use good paper
  • Make sure you proofread
  • Write an engaging summary

Now let’s explain these steps in detail:

1. Write an Outline First

An outline is a good thing to make if you want to write an essay or a cover letter. You should make one too. You write an outline of what you want to say in your letter when you send it to the company. It is good if you make it clear what you want to do and what you want your future employer to know about you.

An outline of your application letter will make it easier for you to write your application letter because you already know how it will look.

2. Write a draft from your outline

Then, you should write a rough draught of your application letter before you write the real one. This way, you can make sure that everything is in place.

To write your letter, use the outline that you made earlier as a guide. There aren’t any grammar or punctuation mistakes that you need to worry about at this point in the process. The goal of this is to help you write a sample application letter.

3. The salutation

Salutation is one part of the application letter that people can see right away. If you write to a company, they are more than likely going to see that first when they open it. Because this is a very important part of the application letter, you need to pay attention to it.

Before you start writing your application letter, you should know a few things about how to say hello:

Your salutation should end with a comma, so you should put one in there. If you’re writing to more than one person, you should address them as “Dear Sirs/Madams.” To address someone if you don’t know their name, use “Dear Sir/Madam.” You should address the person by their full name if they don’t know their gender. When someone says, “Dear David Houston,” you can say that.

4. Use a friendly voice

Employers can tell how you write about yourself because they can see how you talk in your writing. When you write your application letter, you should show the person you are writing to that you are important. Do not be rude when you are writing. Use formal language and be polite. Use words that are not slang or hard to understand.

5. Make it short and straightforward

Even though you need to give your potential employers reasons why you think you are the best person for the job, you also need to be as short as possible. This is because you need to be as clear as possible.

They may not have time to read your letter because they are very busy. The first paragraph of your letter should say what your letter is about. This is where the employer is likely to look first.

6. Job applicants should tailor their cover letter for a job based on the job description and the needs of the company

To show your potential employer that you are interested in the job you are applying for and the company, tailor your application to the job you are applying for and the company.

Employers want to hire people who are excited about their job. To get the job of your dreams, you might just have to change your application letter a little.

7. Use typed documents instead of handwritten

If you don’t get permission to write a letter by hand, you should send a typed and computer-generated document. Type your document to make it look good and easy to read. It will help you make it look good, clear, and easy to read.

8. Use good paper

If you want to send a paper copy of your application letter, make sure you use good paper. Do not cut a piece of paper from your notepad and use that paper to write your cover letter. Make your application letter look messy and rough if you do that.

9. Make sure you proofread

The best way to find mistakes in your application letter is to proofread it. This will help you find things to fix before you send it. You can read your application letter out loud to yourself to see if there are any mistakes in it, or you can look for them.

It’s important to make sure your application letter has correct spelling and punctuation. You can use Grammarly.com to make sure your spelling and grammar are correct.

10. Write an engaging summary

The tone that you use when you write your application letter should match that used in the letter. A formal letter ending is polite, respectful, and polite.

These are some common ways to end your application letter:

‘Sincerely’ or ‘Yours faithfully’

‘Your Truly’

‘Faithfully Yours’

Yours faithfully Yours sincerely Best regards

Difference between a Job Application Letter and a Cover Letter

Many people use the terms “Application Letter” and “Cover Letter” interchangeably because they think they mean the same thing, but they aren’t the same thing.

Even though the application letter and the cover letter do almost the same thing, they are not the same thing. They are different.

An application letter is meant to stand on its own. A cover letter is usually sent with a CV or resume.

It will start with three to four sentences about the job seeker’s experience, education, and achievements, as well as why the job seeker thinks he or she is the best person for the job.

There may be more information in an application letter than in the CV because it is meant to stand on its own as well.

An application letter is often used as a substitute for a resume, so it is important for the job seeker to include specific information about her work history and professional skills in the letter.

452 People are Reading: How to get Jobs in Canada from Nigeria

As for a cover letter, on the other hand, it should not include too much about the job seekers because it is just an introduction to the resume.

A cover letter is like a sales pitch for a job. In order to get the recruiter or hiring manager to read the CV, it needs to make the reader want to.

A cover letter is usually written by a job seeker to show that they are interested in a job. Then, the job seeker will attach a more detailed document to the letter (which is usually a CV).

In most cases, a job seeker sends an application letter in order to show that they’re interested in a job that was not sent to them.

What is an Application Letter?

An application letter is a formal document that has a summary of your most relevant and greatest talents and abilities, which will be expanded in your CV or resume.

An application letter is written to apply for a specific job opening.

It presents you to potential employers and emphasizes your qualifications, knowledge, and expertise for the job you’re applying for.

A job application letter also emphasizes crucial skills that distinguish you from other candidates, as well as your familiarity with the role and firm to which you’re applying.

This letter demonstrates how your personality, professional goals, and aspirations connect with the company’s objectives.

Elements of an Application letter

Every application letter must include the following seven components to meet company requirements and highlight your greatest qualities.

  • Introduction
  • Values and objectives
  • Qualifications

A header must contain your contact information. It appears at the top of every application letter. To maintain consistency throughout their application, many people utilize the same header for their application letter as they do for their resumes.

A header should start with your name and include your email, phone number, and address on distinct lines, regardless of the format you employ. If the material is relevant to the position, some people provide links to their portfolio or social media.

If there is space on the page, you can also provide the name and contact information.

2. Greeting

For salutation or greeting, your first opportunity to set yourself apart from other applicants is by addressing the reader correctly. You could look up the name of the hiring manager for each post.

This information is usually available in the job posting, on the company website, from the referrer, or by calling their office and asking.

If you can’t discover a specific name to address your letter to, use “Dear Hiring Manager”; it is a conventional salutation that can be used when the hiring manager’s name is not provided.

3. Introduction

Your application letter should include basic information about yourself and why you’re applying for the position. Include the title of the job you’re looking for, as well as a basic outline of why you’d be a good fit for the role and why you’re excited about it.

You can highlight how you learned about the opportunity and why you decided to apply, which is a particularly effective tactic if you were suggested to the role by another employee.

Examine the job description for the core skills required for the position, and use your introductory paragraph to describe how you demonstrate those skills.

4. Values and objectives

In this paragraph, you should indicate that you understand the company’s objective and have done research on the role. Concentrate on how your missions fit with theirs and how they connect to the aspects of the corporate society that you enjoy.

Explain how your effort will improve both your future and the demands of your potential employer. This area of your application letter allows you to demonstrate that you can not only do the job well but also that you can work well with others and bring a pleasant attitude to the workplace.

5. Qualification

After your values and objectives, concentrate on your experience and certifications. This allows you to immediately grab the employer’s attention by describing how you can help their team.

More information on these should be added to your CV, focusing on how your experiences relate to the job. Include examples of relevant projects or situations that demonstrate how you overcome challenges and perform successfully at work.

Describe how you contributed to the success of previous projects and emphasize the value of your actions.

6. Conclusion

This paragraph should highlight your excitement and offer opinions on the next stages in the application process. Thank the hiring manager for taking the time to look over your application and express an interest in learning more about the position or setting up an interview.

Focus on the skills and potential you intend to contribute to their team in your application letter to show how you can benefit the company.

7. Signature

Finish with a professional ending line and your name written and signed. You could use any of these as closing remarks:

A Practical Example of a Job Application Letter in Nigeria

There are some rules you should follow if you want to make writing a letter for a job easy and simple. From the salutation and ending to the overall structure of your letter, there are some rules that make your letter look good.

When you write an application letter, you should start with your name and phone number. Your phone number and the number of the company you work for should be in the contact information.

In order to for the company you are applying for to be able to get in touch with you, you need to add your name and address as well as your phone number, e-mail, and the date. After your signature, you can put your email address at the end of the letter.

The salutation and contact information are at the top of your application letter.

(Your contact information) Name Address City, State Zip Code Phone Number Email Address Date

(Potential employer’s contact information) Name Title Company Address City, State Zip Code

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name, (Salutation) It’s polite to say hello to someone when you’re filling out an application. The most common way to start a greeting is with “Dear Mr./Ms.” and the person’s last name.

The body of the application letter

It tells the employer what job you are applying for, why they should look at your application, and how they would follow up with you if they chose you for the job. The body of your letter is made up of different paragraphs that lead up to the end. Here, we’re going to look at the different parts of the text.

First paragraph

To start your letter, write down why you’re writing it. During this paragraph, you will talk about the job that you want to get and where you saw the job application. In the first paragraph, you make an impression on the employer that will last a long time. In this part, you sell yourself to the person who will be hiring you.

Second and Third paragraph

People who are reading your application letter should know what you can do for the company and what you can do for the job. The second and third paragraphs should do this. Here is where you have to show the employer that you are the person they want to hire. To do this, you’d have to talk about the things that make you a good candidate for the job. Remember to say why you are the best person for the job.

Note : You should do some research on the company and find out some things that will help you show that you are the best person for the job. You can look into the job you want to do to find out what the company expects of you, and then tailor your application to that. Also, don’t forget to use a specific example when you can, if possible. If you say that you are good at marketing, you should be able to give examples that show that.

Last paragraph

This is the last paragraph of your application letter. It should sum up your application letter. In this part of your letter, you should also thank your employer. You should thank your employer for considering you for the job at the end of this paragraph. You can also say how the employer or the company will follow up with you. This is a good match. Close your letter in a polite way. For instance;

Daniel Victor Human Resources Director Capital Solutions, Inc. 101 Admiralty Way Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.

Dear Mr. Samuel, My friend, Daine James, told me that Capital Solutions is looking for a Human Resources Specialist with at least two years of experience. I was very happy to hear that. When I did research on the company, I found out that Capital Solutions sees teamwork as an important part of the performance that can help the company reach its goals. I also learned how much the company needs a Human Resources specialist who can join the team and start working right away. That’s why I think I’d be a good fit for your team. I’m David Emmanuel, and I’m a graduate of the University of Lagos’s Human Resources and People Management programme. I worked in Human Resources for five years, and I’ve gathered so much experience specializing in this field. It’s my job as the Human Resources Manager to look after a team of 20 people, plan the onboarding process for new employees, and figure out how much the company should pay. Also, I’ve done the following:

  • Data entry and data reporting on HRM software
  • Recruiting and hiring processes (which include; creating job descriptions, posting job vacancies, creating candidate awareness on available job vacancies, screening CVs and scheduling interviews).
  • Organizing company events. (organising a party for the end of the year and team-bonding events).

We can talk about my skills and what I can do for your team on request. Thank you for taking the time to think about it.

(Signature) Bibiana Nyong

In Conclusion:

After you send your application letter and CV to an office or email, it can be very disheartening if you don’t hear from them. The truth is, it won’t help you to just wait for a response that might never come. You should follow up with the hiring manager if you don’t hear back from them for a week or two after you sent your application letter or CV.

There are many people like you applying for the same position, the only way you can get the job is to give the reasons why you stand out.

Give them the reasons why they should hire you over other applicants.

5. Mention Why You Want The Job

This is another important part many applicants overlook. The truth is, the company wants to know why you work with or in their company.

If you don't give them solid reasons they might not call you for an interview. So, put that in your letter.

6. Include A Professional Closing

Your closing is important when writing a job application letter. You want to thank the hiring manager or recruiter for reviewing your letter and giving other additional information needed.

Common closing you can use are:

  • 'O r Yours Sincerely"

Asides from having the needed skills, employers want to hire trained security men/women. So, the training that you have acquired will affect your qualification for the job.

So when you are writing your application letter, it is good you let the recruiter know the training that you acquired that makes you qualified for the role.

Structure of a security job application letter

Date and contact information .

When you are writing your application letter for a security job in Nigeria, you must add your contact information and date at the top of your letter.

Usually, your contact information should be at the top left corner of the letter, and that of the company should be at the top left corner of the letter. It is also good that you add a date at the end of the contact information.

Greeting/salutation

Before you start writing about your skills and qualifications in the body of your letter, you should, first of all, greet the person that you are addressing in the letter. You can greet the receiver professionally by adding MR/MRS to their last name.

State your purpose for writing the letter

After greeting the receiver professionally, you can go ahead to state your purpose of writing the letter. Simply state that you want to apply for a job as a security officer (depending on the title of the role) in their company.

The first paragraph of your letter

After you have stated the purpose of your letter, you can go ahead to explain what makes you think you are the best person for the position.

The second paragraph of your letter

In the second paragraph of your application letter, you start providing details about your experience working as a security officer and some relevant training and certifications that may contribute to the strengthening of the company’s security.

The third paragraph of your application letter

In the third paragraph of your application letter, you go on to elaborate on the skills, certifications and training that makes you the best job candidate for the role.

The fourth paragraph of your application letter

In the fourth paragraph of your application letter, you should inform the employer that you are looking forward to being interviewed. You can also indicate how you intend to follow up on the letter and after how long if you do not get a response.

The last sentence in your application letter

In the last sentence of your application letter, you should thank the reader for taking out time to consider your application.

How to Write An Application Letter for a Security Job

We have talked about the structure of your application letter, now we are going to walk you through how you can write an application letter.

When you are writing an application letter, you have to make sure you are giving the employer, recruiter, or HR manager all the information needed. You should give useful information that endorses you as the best person for the job.

In this section, we are going to walk you through the kind of information that you should include in your application letter.

Include information about the company and the role

When you are writing your application letter, you must include some information about the company and its role. When you do this, it shows the recruiter that you are interested in the role because you have researched the role.

Including information about the company and role in your application letter also helps you tailor your application to the specific role that you are looking to get.

Begin your application letter by describing your interest

It is no news that recruiters/employers look forward to hiring job candidates that are interested in the job. You should show your interest in the job right from your first sentence.

It is good that you mention the job title that you are looking to get and how you saw the job vacancy. You should also talk about what interests you the most about the role so that the recruiter can see your passion and enthusiasm for the role.

You should also state the skills, experience, qualifications, etc. that makes you the best fit for the position. The recruiter will read the first paragraph of your application letter, so it is good you capture their interest at this stage.

Outline your experience and qualifications

After your first paragraph introduces you to the role that you are applying for, the remaining paragraphs should outline your work experience and qualifications.

Recruiters are indeed interested in job candidates that show enthusiasm for the role, but every employer wants to hire someone that has what it takes to do the job effectively. You must talk about your experience and qualifications in such a way that it aligns with the goal and vision of the company.

For example, if you are applying for a role in marketing, you should talk about how many leads you have brought to the company, how you have been able to impact revenue in your previous job, etc.

Show a bit of your personality in your application letter

Recruiters/employers want to have an idea of their potential employees asides from their qualifications and work experience. At the end of the day, the employer is going to be working with a person and not with qualifications and skills.

It is good to show some aspects of your personality, but make sure it gives the employer reasons why you are a perfect fit for the job.

Show appreciation

Before you end your letter, appreciate the recruiter for taking out time to go through your application letter and for considering you for the position.

The recruiter has taken out time to read your letter, so showing your gratitude for the time spent is a polite and professional way to end your letter.

Close the letter

A professional sign-off is important to close the letter like “sincerely”, etc. After this, you should include your full name and then your signature. When you are submitting your application letter via email, you should include your contact information (you can create a signature to achieve this).

Sending Your Application Letter

The format of your application letter will depend on the method that you are going to use to it. If you wish to email the letter, the format will be different if you are going to submit the hard copy.

For an email application letter, your contact information should be at the end of the email instead of at the beginning for printed letters.

When you are emailing your application letter, you need to consider your subject line. The subject of an email is very important, because it may determine whether or not the recruiter will be interested to open and read the email.

Always make sure your subject lines are professional, polite, short, and related to the role that you are applying for.

In my previous role, I worked closely with the Chief Security Officer (CSO) and supported the administration of different security departments of the company. I have worked for small companies for most of my career as a security executive, and I appreciate the opportunity that it has given me to wear many hats. It has also allowed me to work with other team members to achieve organizational goals.

I have strong communication skills, which are vital to the success of a security operative. I also have a diploma certificate in security and surveillance from the Polytechnic of Lagos. Throughout my education and career, I have been exposed to and worked with skilled security professionals whom I have learned from.
