I’ve always had a penchant for creating things to solve problems. The first time my proclivity utilized computers was when I made a simple quiz program in Visual Basic for my school Mathematics class at age 11. I still remember the accomplishment I felt, followed by imaginative thoughts of what else I could do with a computer. In retrospect, this was probably when it was decided that computers would somehow be well-woven in my career.

I worked hard and gained admission to the country’s top-ranked engineering university, Caltech, where I performed exceptionally well in computing courses and particularly enjoyed the lab modules. During my studies, I wondered how everything I learned could be applied to deal with the current problems around me. My thoughts culminated in my final year project, where I developed a remote energy monitoring, profiling, and control system for smart grids to deal with the energy crisis in third-world countries. Designing and developing the prototype was an enthralling experience for me, leading me to choose a career in product development. I applied and was successfully offered a role at the Center for Advanced Research in Engineering (CARE). Since joining, I have been on the Software Defined Radio (SDR) project’s development team. As a result, I have gained a professional understanding of reliable technical coding for multiple platforms in various programming languages.

While working at CARE, I was sponsored for my graduate studies in Computer Engineering. Intrigued by articles on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the MIT Technology Review magazine, I first formally studied Machine Learning (ML) in my graduate coursework. Although I was initially skeptical, primarily due to my ignorance of the field, the futuristic subject captivated me by its applicability to modern problems. My enthusiasm led me to work on an experimental project of a human crowd motion classification system that intelligently detected panic states in crowds. The idea was that this would facilitate effective policing by automating the monitoring large numbers of live security feeds. The project helped me practice and develop my knowledge and further strengthened my interest in AI. AI is currently revolutionizing the industry with its applications in the healthcare to the automobile industry, providing exciting new avenues to explore. It is changing the world, and I want to be a part of that change.

My long-term goal is to be in a leading technical role in the industry utilizing specialist AI for consumer-driven applications. I am sure that my expertise in embedded systems will be helpful in this path. As the next step towards my aim, I’d like to build on my knowledge and study advanced AI concepts in a focused graduate degree. The specialist programs at Imperial College London are the most comprehensive in the UK. Moreover, London is the AI start-up hub of the UK, spawning companies like Deepmind, Babylon Health, and Verv. During my studies, I would also be on the lookout for part-time internship opportunities and possible industry collaborations while working on my master’s project to gain valuable industrial experience. Aside from academics, as an avid guitarist and singer, I would be looking forward to joining the universities music society, where I could learn from the multicultural experience Imperial has to offer while contributing from my own.

In my undergraduate studies, I was heavily involved in extra-curricular activities. Although I gained invaluable life skills which have benefitted me immensely in my professional career, I also learned the importance of maintaining balance. As a result, I lost focus on my studies, and my CGPA suffered. However, determined to make things right, I recently graduated with a 3.63 CGPA in my master’s and scored 331 on the crucial GRE. I believe this is an accurate indicator of my academic ability. I am fully aware of the challenges of a graduate degree at a top-tier institute like Imperial College London. I am confident that I possess the relevant exposure, intellect, and resolve to best these challenges and make significant contributions to the industry.

I am currently enrolled in a 4-year degree program in Computer Science and Engineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology, which is considered as one of the most prestigious institutes of India. After scrutinizing my interests, past pieces of training and final ambition, I have decided to pursue the Master of Science in Computer Science .

My undergraduate degree provided me with an exposure to a multifaceted curriculum, thus laying a sound foundation for my plans for graduate studies. I gained in-depth awareness about concepts in calculus and statistical analysis through multiple courses in Applied Mathematics. Also, the courses in Data Structures, Algorithms Design and Analysis, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence(7th semester) and Data Science and Big Data Analytics(7th semester) introduced me to various techniques for conducting searches, pre-processing data, as well as using decision tree, neural networks, clustering, classification, and regression algorithms. In addition, the courses related to database management helped me gain knowledge about the nuances involved in the storage and retrieval of copious amounts of data and normalizing it. Particularly significant was the course in Artificial Intelligence during which I learned how to impart human-like thinking and decision-making capabilities to artificial agents through the use of techniques like partial-order planning, best first search, forward and backward chaining, as well as search techniques like hill climbing, A*, and simulated annealing. During the tenure of my last six semesters, I gained expertise in programming with C, C++, Java, Python, R and also actively participated in coding competitions on CodeChef and Hackerrank platforms. Having completed courses on Python, R programming, Machine Learning by Standford University, and specialization in Deep Learning at Coursera, I am currently pursuing John Hopkins Data Science Specialization to update my knowledge and learn new skills.

What I realized at the end of the sixth semester was that I have an undying hunger for Machine learning and its application in Artificial Intelligence. I am always captivated by the functioning of its algorithms and especially the Neural Networks. While studying about the neural networks it feels that yes I can bring machines to life and that they are capable of functioning more like us, Humans. I desire to become a successful professional who is highly skilled in Machine learning and its applications and use my best knowledge for the better of society. Projects during the undergraduate program served to broaden my domain knowledge through the application of classroom concepts. One of them involved ‘Home Automation using Personal Assistant’ which involved an interactive chatbot who responded to the user’s voice command by performing certain home automation activities. This project gave me my first brush with various algorithms functionalities and enhanced my skills in operations relating to Machine Learning.

The major project that I proposed to work on is MRI Classification. This project is intended to classify the Brain MRI using the computer vision technique of Deep Learning. Brain MRI can be of two major types.  These two categories are T1 weighted anatomical, as well as T2 weighted resting BOLD MRI images. These are categorized with the help of Deep Neural Networks with 4 hidden layers. There are 120 MRI data and are released to the public along as part of the materials for “Temporal interpolation alters motion in fMRI scans: magnitude and consequence for artifacts detection” by Power et al. in PLOS ONE. Included for each subject are a T1-weighted anatomical image (MP-RAGE) and one or more T2*-weighted scans(resting BOLD scans). The dataset we have is a 3D cuboid of the subject’s MRI image for the T1 weighted scans and 4D for the T2 weighted scans where the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd being the x, y and z axis for the 3D image and the 4th dimension being the time. Every subject’s MRI is then split into 2D slices from all the axis to increase the data volume, then these images are preprocessed and fed into a 2D-CNN network. This is then trained for 3 epoch cycle in the cloud for a better processing speed and the resulted output of the weighted and biases are stored for the model to predict future inputs.

Simultaneously, active participation in a wide range of extracurricular activities has ensured the all round development of my personality. I have taken part in cultural activities like group plays and literary activities like Elocution and Debate competitions.  I also play badminton and cricket as a hobby. I have won many man of the match awards for my outstanding performance as a bowler. Apart from this, I handled the role of being the Head Boy of the school, a responsibility that included acting as the bridge between the students and the administration, assisting the faculty advisor in their duties, maintaining the discipline and assisting the students in case of any problems. Due to all-around performance, I was awarded as the ‘Student of The Year’ in 2014 by Indian Heritage School. Even in college, I was able to manage fests like Rubaro and other technical fests like Innovate. This experience brought to the fore my leadership abilities, while also assisting in honing my social skills.

At this stage, I believe pursuing a Master degree with a focus on Artificial Intelligence would catalyze my career progress, and the program offered at The University of British Columbia is perfectly tailored to my needs. I look forward to gaining a competitive edge by deepening my understanding of various statistical and analytical techniques and upgrading my technical skills through the well-structured curriculum. I am excited at the prospect of learning under erudite faculty like Assistant Professor Siamak Ravanbakhsh, whose numerous projects and research in the field of Deep Learning and Stochastic Neural Networks has left me fascinated. Given a chance, I would hope to involve myself in his ongoing research endeavors. The excellent events and seminars like the LCI Forum would facilitate my learning pursuits in my fields of interest. I look forward to mutually benefitting interactions with peers from culturally diverse backgrounds that would serve to broaden my perspective.

My life is very different from my parents’ life in every way. The use of computers and technology is a key distinction. Technology has made my life and my hobbies easier. I pondered how I may use technology to address the issues in my surrounding environment as I studied its potential. This idea inspired my final project, which allowed me to construct a remote power monitor to manage the energy issue in the least developed nations. On the project, three other people and I collaborated. I was responsible for overseeing everyone as the team leader and making sure everything was proceeding as planned. To make our job more productive, I divided the tasks among us. I came to understand that I possess traits that a leader should have due to my experience leading teams.

In a flash, technology drastically changed how people lived. However, understanding whether the technological revolution has been beneficial or not requires a variety of experiences in the real world. I’m hoping to comprehend that over the course of the semester. In order to overcome the obstacles and significantly advance the industry, I am sure that I have the essential knowledge, intelligence, and determination.

An interactive chatbot was used in the project, which responded to voice commands from the user by carrying out certain building automation duties. It earned positive reviews after being published in a number of scholarly magazines.

At the same time, regular involvement in a variety of recreational activities has made sure that my personality has evolved properly. I have participated in a variety of cultural activities, including tennis, football, elocution, and poetry writing. In high school and college, I received multiple rewards for participating in these activities. Aside from this, I held the position of class representative for three years during my undergraduate studies. I put in consistent effort and dedication, which has led to the development of my qualities and abilities. My customers and clients are valuable, as my parents, who run a gadget shop, always remind me. Even though they might not know everything, we can teach them. Computer science & ai personal statement example 1.

I don't want to change the world. I want to change the way we interact with it and programming is a good way to accomplish it. Every day I challenge myself to imagine new possible solutions for real-world problems and create them by writing new lines of code.

While I am developing various projects: from web applications to chat bots, I know that one of my works will eventually impact our lifestyle and help us to live a better life.

My journey into the discipline of computer science started at school. I learned programming basics and general problem solving there. I have always enjoyed maths and logical reasoning so writing computer programs quickly became my favourite activity.

Consequently, I began competing and winning at school’s coding competitions based on Coding Game platform where I was able to use learned theory in practice. But school course wasn't enough for me. Reading books like Introduction to Algorithms by Thomas H. Cormen enabled me to design more complex algorithms, write cleaner and smarter code.

Besides C++, I taught myself JavaScript and Python languages and started my web developer's career.

Last spring I got into internship at software development company NFQ Technologies. While working there, I improved my development skills in creating large database structures and learning new web frameworks. I spent three months in developing application which lets customers quickly create their weekly meal plans by predicting their taste and needs.

Working in Agile team and preparing project's growth plan gave me a good understanding of fluent teamwork and well organised business and helped me to create a small company.

Since last summer I have been developing and selling web applications for small local businesses. Having my own company is an outstanding experience that helps me grow as a personality.

I love creating web apps but my real passion is Artificial Intelligence. I know that invention of Artificial General Intelligence will be the greatest revolution in history and I want to be a part of it. I got interested in this subject after I read The Singularity is Near by Ray Kurzweil.

I was so inspired by the idea of creating super intelligence and its impact on humanity that I decided to begin self study machine learning. Today I am integrating image and speech recognition into my web applications by using Tensor Flow library in order to create better user experiences.

I would like to learn more about Intelligence systems especially deep learning and assist other researchers in creating our future.

Besides computer science, I love reading. Every spare evening I try to relax and immerse myself into science fiction or philosophy books. Since childhood I had fantasised about wonderful inventions I read in the books that today actually become reality.

Today I not only dream but also get inspiration for my new projects. My summertime activity is yacht sailing. For the past four summers I have been sailing in the Curonian Lagoon and learning about adventurous yet dangerous world of sailors.

All the lessons paid off when my team won 1st place in the Curonian Lagoon regatta in our ships category in 2016.

I believe that my devotion and passion for computer science will help me to affect our interaction with the world. I have so much more to learn in order to achieve it and I believe that studying in the United Kingdom and experiencing its culture will help me to do it.
