While there's no one-size-fits-all rule for making presentation slides, you can group them into three main categories:
These slides bookend your presentation. The introduction slide typically includes the title of your presentation, your name and any relevant introductory information. The closing slide summarizes key points, provides a conclusion and often includes contact information or a call to action.
Content slides make up the core of your presentation and contain the primary information you want to convey to your audience. They can include text, images, charts, graphs and other visual or textual elements supporting your presentation's message.
Transition slides signal a change in topic or create a smooth flow between different sections of your presentation. They often feature a brief title or heading that previews the upcoming content. Transition slides help guide your audience through the presentation and make it easy to follow.
The four types of presentations are informative, instructional, persuasive and arousing.
1. Informative Presentations: These are used to educate the audience on a particular topic. They present facts, data and information to increase the audience's knowledge and understanding.
2. Instructional Presentations: These presentations provide step-by-step guidance or training on a specific task, process or concept. You can use this type of presentation for teaching or coaching purposes, emphasizing learning and development.
3. Persuasive Presentations: The primary goal of these presentations is to influence the listeners' attitudes, beliefs or behaviors. Use this presentation type when you want your audience to accept certain arguments or propositions.
4. Arousing Presentations: These presentations aim to evoke interest and awaken curiosity about the topic among the audience. They often aim to inspire, motivate or raise awareness about an issue.
Creating an intriguing 5-minute presentation may be challenging due to the time constraint. Yet, you can deliver an impactful and engaging presentation with a focused approach and attention to detail.
Here are some of the ways to do it:
1. Focus on a single core message : Since you have limited time, choose a specific topic and stick to it. Present only the crucial information that will help the audience understand your point.
2. Engage from the start: Start your presentation with a compelling story, anecdote or a surprising fact. This will grab the audience's attention and spark curiosity.
3. Keep slides simple and visual: Avoid cluttered slides with too much text. Use visuals such as images, graphs or infographics to illustrate your points clearly and concisely.
4. Tell a story: A narrative structure engages the audience and helps them follow your message. Consider using metaphors or anecdotes to explain complex ideas.
5. Encourage questions or interaction: Since time is limited, you might opt for a brief Q&A session, ask a rhetorical question or request audience feedback for further discussion later.

The number of slides you should have for a 20-minute presentation can vary depending on several factors, such as the complexity of the topic and the pace of your speech.
However, the general rule of thumb is to allocate at least 1-2 minutes per slide, which suggests 10-20 slides for a 20-minute presentation.
The 5 5 5 rule is a framework that ensures your presentation is clear and remains engaging. A presentation should have no more than five words per line of text, five lines of text per slide and five slides that apply the first two rules in a row.

A technique that can help you achieve objective, clear, and structured English presentations, is to use linking phrases that join the separate parts of your presentation together.
English presentations normally consist of an introduction, the main body, individual parts of the main body, and the ending or conclusion.
To help maintain your audience’s attention, you need to signal when you are going from one part to another.
In this article, I teach you 52 phrases that do exactly this – linking the different parts together, and therefore, making your presentation flow better. You’ll find that these phrases will act as ‘signposts’ for the audience when you finish one part and start another.
The introduction.
All good presentations start with a strong introduction.
There are a number of different ways you can begin your English presentation. Here’s a simple, but effective introduction structure which works for most types of business presentations:
Introduce – Introduce yourself and greet your audience. Introduce the presentation topic – Explain the reasons for listening. Outline – Describe the main parts of the presentation. Question policy – Make it clear to your audience when they can ask questions: during or at the end?
Here are some phrases which you can use to structure the introduction in this way:
1. Good morning/afternoon (everyone) (ladies and gentlemen). 2. It’s a pleasure to welcome (the President) here. 3. I’m … (the Director of …)

Now that you have finished the introduction, we now need to transition to the main body, and its individual parts in a smooth way.

If you need to talk about goals, challenges, and strategies in your English presentation, listing phrases can help link these together and improve the flow of your speech. If you have to explain processes, sequencing phrases are helpful:

Linking phrases are like the skeleton which holds your presentation together.
Not only do they improve the flow and help guide the audience, but by memorizing them they can also help you remember the general structure of your presentation, giving you increased confidence.
To help you memorize, I recommend saying the linking phrases on their own from the beginning to the end of your presentation while you practice.
I also suggest memorizing the introduction word for word. By doing this, you will get off to a great start, which will settle your nerves and transmit a positive first impression.

We all want to be remembered. The best PowerPoint slideshow help to make a mark on the audience. There are tried-and-true ways to do just that, and expert Neil Tomlinson shares expertise on being remembered:
Get your main point into the presentation as early as possible (this avoids any risk of audience fatigue or attention span waning), then substantiate your point with facts, figures etc and then reiterate your point at the end in a ‘Summary’.

Let's say that you're a seasoned presenter with a pretty standard set of presentation topics. Maybe you're an expert in your field, and you're asked to give a PPT presentation frequently on similar topics.
That's the value of being an expert. You might have a standard spiel that you give your audiences, and your content won't totally change from one presentation to another. That's why it helps to make only slight tweaks to adapt your presentation to each audience.

Different audiences will have different needs and different challenges, which requires me to re-sequence the slides, or create new ones. Learn everything you can about your audience. Learning how to make a presentable PowerPoint is all about thinking of the recipient, not the presenter!
A PowerPoint presentation tip that'll make your slideshow more interesting and more engaging is to use a custom font.
Fonts set the tone for your presentation. So, when you use a premium font, you’re opting for a high-quality font while also adding a personal or creative touch.
When choosing a font, remember that you want everyone to read your text easily.
One PowerPoint trick is to use contrast to make some of your text stand out or make it easier to read.
If you’re putting text over an image on our PowerPoint slide, you may need to use a white box with black text in it to make your text easier to read. You can also use contrasting colors to highlight important text.
Another PowerPoint tip is to avoid having too many animations or transitions.
When you've got too many animations, it can be distracting to the audience. It’s not only distracting, but it's unprofessional.
It’s best to stick to one or two animations throughout your presentation. Also, if you've got any animations in your presentation, make sure to test them to see if they work before presenting.
Include audio on a slide on PowerPoint to increase audience engagement. Audio can be anything from fun sound effects to interview clips. You can even add an audio clip of your voice.

One of those rules is the rule of three. It's where you start by dividing your presentation into thirds. Everything should come in thirds, so if you use bullet points, you should only have three. If you use icons, you should only have three.

When it comes to visualizing data in presentations, we have to remember that our audience does not need all the fine details of the data - they need the main takeaway and we need to make sure that's evident to them when looking at the slide.
Inside of PowerPoint themes, you'll find layouts , which are custom slide designs.
Most themes include a selection of content layouts that you can use as a starting point for your own slide designs. You can leverage slide master PowerPoint 2024 designs with the help of layouts.
Layouts are like a starting point for your PowerPoint presentation slides. They contain combinations of placeholders for text boxes, images, and more.
Instead of clicking and drawing individual objects onto the slide, use one of these layouts to start your slide off. It's one of the top PowerPoint presentation tips and tricks to save time.
When you're working with text on your slide, it helps to ensure that it aligns consistently. Keeping your text aligned in the same orientation really makes a slide look clean.
In the example below, I've basically got three text boxes:
Notice that all this text is aligned left.
Aligning text was the " aha " moment that I learned when I started studying slide design. It's one of those steps that makes a slide look much neater and professional, so keep it in mind when designing.
No matter how great your PowerPoint presentation slides look, you need to think about how your user will use the presentation file.
Any of these are likely scenarios if you're regularly sending presentations to other users:
In this case, my favorite tip is to export the presentation as a PDF. To do that, go to File > Export > Create PDF , and then save your presentation as a PDF.
This is sure to help most of your users see the presentation just the way you intended.
Many PowerPoint themes have more than one color scheme that you can apply to your presentation. On the Design tab, click on the drop-down next to Themes to try out a different color scheme.
Typically, these will restyle your entire presentation. Premium themes that you might get from Envato Elements, for example, may have many versions inside the original presentation zip file.
The slide master controls the design for your PowerPoint slide. Instead of making the same change to each slide, apply a change to a slide master. It'll affect all the PowerPoint presentation slides that use the same master.
It's ideal to apply a logo to the slide master itself, for example. This keeps the logo the same size and in the same position on each slide.
To do that, go to View > Slide Master. On the right side, you're likely to see a variety of slide masters that control designs for many slides. Drop the elements that you want to remain consistent onto one of the slide masters.
PowerPoint presentation slides look better when the objects on them are in line with one another. There's a certain visual rhythm that occurs when objects line up in the center or along certain boundary lines.
When you start dragging objects on your slide, you'll see guiding lines that pop up. These are very intuitive, and you'll likely notice that they help you line up your objects. You might seem them pop up when you've got a box that's equidistant between two other objects on the slide, for example.
This is one of the best tricks for improving the look of your PowerPoint slide. Spend some time making sure that your key elements line up cohesively.

There's nothing that makes an audience tune out faster than being overloaded with slide content. Sometimes we try to make so many points that the audience misses all of them due to information overload.
Less is truly more. When you cut the weaker points of your presentation, the audience's attention will follow your key points accordingly.
It seems like cheating, but one of the best steps that you can take for your slide is to simply reduce the number of items that are on it. Convert some of your typed points to things you'll speak verbally.
Sometimes, I find that my presentations are out of order. I might spend too much time explaining my decision before I get to the conclusion.
In these cases, I like to use Slide Sorter View to re-sequence the slides in my presentation. To access this view, go to View > Slide Sorter on PowerPoint's ribbon.
From Slide Sorter view, you've got a top-down view of all the slides in your presentation deck. It sometimes becomes obvious that the slides can be reordered into a better sequence from this view.
One of my favorite PowerPoint presentation tips is to complement your major points with a bit of animation. Using animation can bring a key point onto your slide with style!

Alternating between solid color and slides with a white background can produce an interesting visual effect and engage your audience. You can use the solid-colored slides to signify a new section in your presentation.
Not to mention, solid-colored slides are the perfect way to re-enforce your brand colors and build your brand recognition.
If you’re trying to make a case for a global expansion or need to report on how other branches are performing, consider using a map to help your audience visualize the data.

Every presentation has three main parts – the beginning, the middle, and the end. And among these, the beginning is easily the most important.
You have about 30 seconds to get the audience interested in what you have to say. If that doesn’t happen, anything else you do afterwards will soon be forgotten.
To do that it helps to have a “hook” to grab their attention. Here are 12 tried and true ways to hook your audience and get your presentation off on the right foot.
At the beginning of every presentation, there are two main things going on.
A good hook is one that quickly gets everyone oriented and engaged, introduces your topic, and makes them willing to listen to more of what you have to say.

It’s hard to think of a quicker way to shut down the audience than to begin by mumbling,
“Hello, my name is Bob Smith, and for the next 45 minutes I’m going to be talking about the importance of socks.”
I don’t know why Bob’s talking about socks, and I don’t know why I should listen. I’m already lacing up my track shoes and getting ready to sprint for the door.
So if it falls to you to give the next presentation on the importance of socks (or any other topic), here are 12 ways you can use to engage the audience from the very beginning. I’ll continue with the sock example to help out poor Bob.

1. Make an Outrageous or Provocative Claim . It’s the same way I started this post. Hopefully it caught your attention and made you want to read more. The same goes for presentations. Be bold, original, challenge common beliefs, then back up your claim.
“Socks are more important than food.” That’s what a man named Kiwi said recently. Kiwi was a homeless man living on the streets of Toronto, Canada. He said that he knew of many pantries and shelters where he could get food, but there was no way he could walk the streets of his city without socks. Socks meant everything to this man and many like him. And if you think about it, socks are very important to all of us…

2. Tell a Joke. This is a classic technique that can work well as a way to relax and make the audience receptive. It’s a good idea to try the joke out on some friends first, to make sure they think it’s funny too. Keep it clean, and be ready to move on if you don’t get the laughter you thought you would.
On the first day of summer camp, the director informed all the little campers that he expected them to put on a fresh pair of socks every day. Two weeks later, Johnny failed to appear at the morning flag raising. The director found him still in his cot.
“Why aren’t you lined up with the other boys?” He asked.
“I can’t get my shoes on over fourteen pairs of socks!”
Clearly the boy knew that it was important to have his socks, but didn’t understand why or how the socks were important…

3. Tell a Story. Stories remind your audience that you are human, make you relatable, and take down protective barriers people will erect when they think people will be talking at them. Start immediately with the story. You can back up and introduce yourself later.
“ Change your socks ” the instructor ordered. We had just forded a river in the middle of the night and our feet were soaking wet. We were carrying three pairs of socks on this mission. The first was already dirty, and now the second was soaked. But we didn’t want to change our socks. Because in two miles we were supposed to cross another river and we would get wet again. But the instructor didn’t want to hear that. He wanted to make sure we knew he was in charge. Presenting him with the facts only appeared like a challenge to his authority, so he simply said slowly and more deliberately, “ Change. Your. Socks .”
So we changed into our last dry socks by moonlight, he checked every one of us, then we marched on. And we crossed that next river and got wet. Our feet were soaked and sore for the next two days. For a while, it was all I could think about – the foolish order to change our socks. It was the maddest I had ever been. Because when it comes right down to it, the simplest things are the most important in life. The trust of a loved one; food; and dry socks. Most of us take socks for granted…

4. Show a Video . Let someone else break the ice for you with a video. It’s an unexpected way to begin, so people will be instantly interested, plus people just like to watch video. Keep it brief and related to the topic in some way. It can be a great way to show the audience what you are talking about, not just trying to describe it. Absolutely double check and rehearse to make sure the video works wherever you will be presenting, and be prepared to react if it fails anyway.

5. Ask a Couple Questions. Some people will want to answer, but even if they don’t do it out loud, they will be considering the answer in their minds, so they will be engaged. Asking several questions in a row will stretch the audience’s mind further while also serving as an introduction to your topic. Be sure to pause after each question for best effect.
What do you think is the most important piece of clothing you own? What makes it important? Is it the protection it provides? How often you wear it? The warmth it offers? The way it makes you look? How it makes you feel? For me, there is nothing more important that having on a nice clean pair of dry socks…
6. Show a Picture . This can be a variation of the story method. Share a picture of a person and talk about him, or of a place and why it is important, or of something else related to your subject. People will look at the picture instead of you, so it takes a little pressure off. And the picture itself serves to introduce your topic. Half the job is done before you even open your mouth.
7. Ask a Rhetorical Question . It’s a question that can’t necessarily be answered, but it gets people thinking, and helps you point them in the direction you want to go.
Are socks what truly define us as human beings? Are socks what differentiate us from all the other forms of life on the planet? After all, nobody else on earth is wearing them except us. Can they be that important? These are clearly questions for the ages, and well worth our consideration…
8. Set an Expectation . Not only is it a good idea to let people know what you will be talking about, you will engage their attention much better if you give them something interesting to look forward to.
By the end of this presentation, not only will you know how important socks are in our lives, you will have ten fun facts about socks that you probably didn’t know, and four new sock jokes that you can use to amaze and amuse your friends.
9. Show Them an Object. Bring something with you that you can hold up and talk about. This is a good way to quickly capture the attention of the audience and introduce your topic at the same time.
10. Reference an Historical Event . If the day, week, month, or year is unique in any way that you can relate to your topic, that can be another way to make the topic seem more real or relevant.

And that one invention was enough to not only change the history of footwear, but lead to the development of a child’s toy as well. Socks have had a huge impact on us…

11. Use a Quote . Find a quote from someone recognizable, then think about how you can tie it into your presentation, or turn it on its head.
Over at Brainyquote.com you can find lots to choose from and can even search by topic. Another good source is Wisdomquotes for lots of good quotes by topic or author.
A variation on this idea would be to make the quote your first slide – nothing but the quote in giant words; possibly with a picture of the person who said it.
12. Ask, “What if…?” or “Imagine…” Ask them about something that changes their perspective, like what if you could fly, read minds, be debt-free, go backward or forward in time. You can adapt this to nearly any presentation and it will immediately cause your audience to engage their minds. Ask the question, pause, ask it again for best effect.
Imagine a world without socks. (pause) Imagine… a world without socks. What would it be like? What would change? How would your life be different? (pause) When you think about it, socks are critically important….
These are just 12 possible ways to hook your audience, and there are infinite variations on these ideas. You can even combine them – tell a funny story while showing a picture or turning a quote on its head. The keys are to keep it interesting, original, and fairly brief. Remember, you only have about 30 seconds before they decide whether or not they want to keep listening. Use that time well, and you will be on your way to making a memorable presentation.

PHILADELPHIA -- Kyle Hendricks does not know what the future holds as he prepares for his final start of the season for the Cubs and then heads into free agency. What the longest-tenured member of the team does believe is that Chicago’s rotation is in good shape for the future.
A large part of Hendricks’ confidence in that regard is due to the steady rise of lefty Justin Steele as a leader for the Cubs’ group of starters. In a 10-4 win over the Phillies on Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, Steele put the finishing touches on another solid season, even if injuries robbed him of a full campaign.
“My confidence level could not be any higher,” Hendricks said. “With Steeley -- what he's shown, who he is -- if he's healthy and he's out there, he's a top starter in the league. When he’s out there, he’s absolutely dominant. And just what he provides for the identity of a rotation -- he’s a bulldog.
“The competitive fierceness he takes out there every single game, that trickles down to everybody else. Having that at the top to look up to, it’s like what I had with Jon Lester as a young guy. That’s special. And you can’t quantify what that means for younger guys on the team.”
When Hendricks was breaking into the Majors with the Cubs a decade ago, he had the likes of Lester, John Lackey and Jake Arrieta to offer a more veteran blueprint for competitiveness and routine. Hendricks has enjoyed growing into his own form of leadership, which is through setting a professional example and being open to conversation.
Hendricks said he now sees the 29-year-old Steele taking more ownership of his own role in being one of the players the younger crop of Chicago's arms can follow. Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy agreed, pointing out how Steele took a noticeable step forward last season with the focused intent of his daily routine and workouts.
“It's very easy to think, ‘I have a routine,’” Hottovy said. “But no, it's, ‘ Why are we doing that? What's your goal? What are you thinking about?’ There’s intent with everything we do. It should be for a reason. We don't want to work just to work. Let's be more pointed about what we're doing. And he's taken that in every aspect -- last year was the big jump.”

Last year, Steele made his first All-Star team, had a case to start the Midsummer Classic for the Senior Circuit and then finished fifth in voting for the National League Cy Young Award. While Steele fell roughly 40 innings shy of last year’s total (he logged 173 1/3 frames in 2023, compared to 134 2/3 this season), his production was similar across the board.
Steele ended this tour with a 3.07 ERA and a 24.3% strikeout rate after logging a 3.06 ERA and a 24.6% strikeout rate in ‘23. The lefty had a 1.10 WHIP in ‘24 and a 1.17 WHIP in ‘23. He allowed homers at a paltry rate of 0.80 per nine innings this season, following his showing of 0.73 a year ago.
“It's amazing,” Hottovy said. “We were looking at his season this year and how eerily similar the numbers are to last year.”

Underneath the hood, Steele even showed improvement in this season, which was truncated by an early-season left hamstring setback and left elbow tendinitis earlier this month. The lefty held batters to a .219 average (compared to .251 in ‘23) and dramatically improved his numbers against lefty hitters with the help of a sinker that he called a “game changer.”
Heading into Tuesday’s outing, Steele had limited lefties to a .220 weighted on-base average and a .220 slugging percentage, compared to the .337 wOBA and .473 SLG he allowed last year. Against righties, the left-hander was “eerily similar” again, giving up a .281 wOBA this season after a .280 mark last year.
Steele was asked for the aspect of this season that gives him the most pride.
“Not just being complacent with what happened last year and who I was last year,” said Steele, who is under contractual control through 2027. “Just constantly trying to get better and get better in certain departments. I felt like myself and the staff did a good job of that this year.”
And while his effort on Tuesday was abbreviated -- he logged four innings in his second outing back from the injured list -- Steele set himself up for a positive start to an important offseason.
“He gave us what we needed and finished on a strong note,” manager Craig Counsell said. “That puts him in a good position.”
