When you imagine a writer's life , you might imagine the stereotype: a pair of glasses hunched over a typewriter furiously punching keys and drowning in endless pots of coffee.

Why Am I Qualified to Talk about Writing Apps?

Let's face it, there are many people out there that write these kind of articles by just doing some research on what others say, and regurgitating it out without firsthand knowledge of the tools in question (or worse, have AI write it for them). That's not the case here.

As someone who's been publishing books for over 13 years, I've seen a lot writing tools go up and down. Some have been revolutionary game-changers, while others haven't lived up to the hype.

However, choosing the right writing app isn't just about picking the most popular one. Each writer has unique requirements and preferences. What works wonders for me might not for you. For example, Grammarly is hugely popular, but it's not what I recommend for long-form editing.

So, in order to create a top-notch overview of the best writing apps (for mobile devices, remember), I sent out surveys to my readers, and talked to some heavy-hitting authors in the industry – many of which I have been a consultant to as well.

Based on my observations, the results from those surveys, and talking with some of the most well-known authors out there, I feel very strongly that this is a subject I can truly tackle.

So, with that, let's jump into a list of what I think are the best writing mobile apps for authors.

Best Writing App for Novelists: Scrivener

Scrivener is the best mobile writing app for novelists, for now (again, see Atticus ). It’s more organized than any other app. It’s got awesome, ready-made templates for all sorts of genres and layouts. And it works great on iPad and iPhone. (Sorry, Android users.)

What is the best mobile app for writers? Scrivener on iOS is the best app for book writers. If you've read a few of my other articles, you may already know of my absolute love of Scrivener. If I had to recommend a single piece of writing software , Scrivener would be it — including for mobile devices.

Scrivener comes with a steep learning curve because it offers so much customizability and handy features. But there are plenty of free tutorials if you ever need help.

Scrivener for iOS is great for planning, drag-and-drop organizing, and even highlighting types of words. This means you can look for adverb overuse. From corkboard arrangement to keyboard shortcuts to word count goals , this app has almost as much power as its desktop app.

Once you're done, you can always transfer your work over to your devices with Scrivener via Dropbox . Or you can export to DOCX, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, HTML, or even Multi-Markdown.

The only downside: The one-time price is a little steep for a mobile app ($19.99), and you have to buy a separate license for iOS if you already have a license for macOS or Windows.

If you’re an Android user, I’d try Novlr, which is browser-based, so you can use it on any mobile device with an Internet connection.

Best Writing App for General Writing: Microsoft Word

There’s a reason Microsoft Word is the industry standard text editor: it is versatile and easy to use.

Microsoft Office’s Word works well on mobile devices, running smoothly on iOS and Android. It creates beautiful, professional documents that you can export to multiple file formats.

MS Word is suitable for general writing, but I would not recommend it for novel writing. Although it is perfect for memos, email drafts, and print-ready documents, its organization capabilities are not as robust as Scrivener, Ulysses, or other excellent writing software.

Also, its spelling and grammar checker is not as powerful as ProWritingAid or Grammarly.

MS Word is expensive, but many people can use the app without an extra cost because of work or school giving them access.

Though Microsoft Word comes with some computers, it actually costs a pretty penny:

What is the best free writing app? Google Docs is the best free writing app on Android and iOS. If you’re on a budget, Google Docs is the perfect app for everything except proofreading, novel writing, or writing without the Internet.

It lets you customize headers, spacing, fonts — all the things you expect from a professional word processor. Google Docs autosaves every change you make and saves your version history. It exceeds at real-time collaboration, making it ideal for co-authors, bloggers, and ghostwriters .

Not many people realize that Grammarly’s browser app can download your text as a DOCX file. This is great if you need to attach a DOCX file to your email instead of putting the text in the body.

You can also download Grammarly’s browser extension. This editing tool automatically checks your grammar and spelling when on Gmail, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social media sites and email sites.

Grammarly’s free version offers robust proofreading features that are way better than Microsoft Word or MacOS’s built-in grammar and spelling checker.

The premium version of Grammarly is fantastic, too. It offers many more suggestions to improve your writing style, readability, passive voice, and dialogue formatting .

Grammarly’s browser application and browser extension make your emails, posts, and memos more professional and error-free. It gives you confidence and lets everyone know that you are not a joke.

Screenwriting is a type of writing apart from a novel or article that is growing in popularity. Final Draft is an iOS-exclusive paid app dedicated strictly to screenwriting.

According to Final Draft’s own research, fewer than 5% of their users use Android mobile devices, so they won’t develop the Android app anytime soon.

Final Draft has a lot of great features, such as:

• Professionally formatted templates for TV, Film, and Stage Plays
• SmartType, which remembers your character's names , scenes, etc.
• The ability to export PDFs to iCloud, Dropbox , or email
• Element-based script searching
• Color-coded ScriptNotes

David Seidler, the Academy Award-winning author of The King's Speech , loves the ability to change his drafts quickly and on the go.

What app do screenwriters use to write? Screenwriters use the Final Draft app on iOS to write their screenplays.

If you're a serious screenwriter or looking to break into the biz, you should definitely consider getting this app. It’s expensive, but it is the industry standard. According to their website, Final Draft is “used by 95% of film and television productions.”

However, if you don't own an Apple device, Celtx Script is probably your best bet.

Final Draft does not intend on developing or maintaining an Android version of their app.

The full license for Final Draft 11 costs a one-time fee of $249.99, but there are usually deals you can snag to earn 20% off.

Final Draft is best used for writing screenplays, even on mobile devices. There’s a good reason it’s the industry standard for screenwriting.

Best Writing App for Productivity: Novlr

Honestly, I am so thankful for my Evernote app. I'm a big fan of jotting down fresh new ideas on my phone. But notes aren't the only thing you can save. You can actually save web clippings, video, PDF, images, GIFs, and more (with a paid upgrade, of course).

On top of that, you're able to share your notes with other people. All you need is to grant the proper permissions to a co-author, friend, or ghostwriter , and voila!

Evernote is always improving. Though I think their table function could use an upgrade, Evernote releases free updates all the time.

The free version of Evernote is robust and useful. Having the “freemium” version of Evernote is still worth getting, even if you don’t plan on spending any money on the premium version.

Best App for Text To Speech: FromTextToSpeech.com

FromTextToSpeech.com is a browser-based app that turns up to 50,000 characters at a time into MP3 files that you can listen to or download. It is simple. Although it looks kind of sketchy, it is entirely safe and legit. It is the best free text to speech service available.

The most natural-sounding voice option is British English Harry. In fact, you will hear British English Harry all across the Internet — on YouTube, Twitch, etc. Many web users utilize British English Harry’s voice because it almost passes for a British human male.

Other text-to-speech apps either cost a lot of money or only allow a few hundred characters.

Save time and effort by investing in your craft and selecting the “write” tools for the job. Even if you aren't at your primary workstation.

There may have been a few I missed out on. After all, the world of writing is ever-expanding.

And I know I've said it before: Sorry, Android users. While I understand the pros of being on the Android system, there are just so many more quality writing applications for Apple users.

What is the best writing app for non-fiction other than Scrivener? I want the same options, to see my chapters on a side bar and be able to put notes with each chapter. That is the basic requirement but other tools are nice, like word count, grammar, etc. Most of the writing apps I am finding are either simple writing, like Word or Goggle Docs, or for novels with characters, plots, etc. Scrivener is too time consuming to learn. Writing and editing takes long enough. (Novlr looks like the closest to what I want even though the app is based on novel writing). Hoping there might be another that I am unaware of. Anyone can answer!! I am using Word currently but really want to get moving on the writing with more organization.

I’m actually building one – Atticus.io. It’s actually combining scrivener and Vellum together – but we’re making the writing area much easier and intuitive. It’s in final beta now and should be releasing publicly mid July.

How about a review of dictation apps? You’ve got text to speech, but I want that turned around. Dragon, of course, but on a phone?

Two quick things about Google Docs (which I use): 1. It certainly can be used for full-length novels. I write all mine with it (one is 160,000 words). 1b. And it exports well to .docx and works fine with editors using Word’s track changes and commenting. 2. You can use the Grammarly extension with it.

Best Writing Apps for Android in 2022

Whether you're writing essays for school, drafting updates for your blog, or just jotting notes, everybody needs a writing app. There's no shortage of them on the Play Store, and in theory it shouldn't be hard to find a good one — it's just a place to type, right?

Turns out there are quite a few useful features that you might want to look for when settling on a writing app. You probably want an app that syncs with other devices — Android or otherwise — so that you can pick up where you last left off. Diverse file support is good, too, for those times you need to export .doc files or PDFs.

It's hard to argue with an app that comes pre-installed on most Android phones. Google Docs is an entirely cloud-based app that can be accessed from any machine that's signed into your Google account, and has full support for images, text formatting, and a wide array of file formats.

One of the best parts of Google Docs is its collaborative nature, with the ability to share your documents with others and even write simultaneously within the same file. You can even notate certain sections of a document with editor's comments for the other writers' reference. Best of all, it's completely free, without any in-app purchases or tiers to worry about.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is another classic writing app, and it's one that you probably grew up using on your computer before smartphones were even around. Word works a lot like Google Docs, though it syncs to OneDrive rather than Google Drive (you can also set it to sync with Dropbox). The interface is familiar if you've used recent versions of Word on the desktop, and the app also serves as a PDF reader.

Some of the features, including custom headers/footers and file history, require an Office 365 subscription , so power users that need to meet specific formatting standards for, say, college essays, may not be able to get away with using Word for free. But for the majority of users, the free version should offer plenty of functionality and hold up to alternatives like Google Docs.

iA Writer is a fantastic writing app that focuses more on simplicity than formatting — though it does allow for the latter, as well. It features its own file browser for your documents, as well as the ability to sync your work to Google Drive or Dropbox, and best of all, it's cross-platform with support for iOS, Windows, and MacOS.

One of iA Writer's most unique features is its focus mode, which obscures the sentences you're not currently working on, but there's plenty of other great features like Markdown support, night mode, and the ability to publish directly to Medium. iA Writer is free on Android, but keep in mind that you'll need to shell out some cash to use it on your computer.

The go-to for nearly every college student, Evernote is an immensely popular writing app that's also equal parts organizer, planner, document scanner, to-do list, and much, much more. The interface can be a bit overwhelming at times, but in return, you get a wealth of features unmatched by the competition.

Evernote syncs your notes and files within its own cloud service, and offers apps for almost every device you can think of, as well as a web interface. Like the other note-taking apps in this list, you can export your writings as PDFs or other file formats, and Evernote can import from PDFs as well. If you shell out for Evernote Premium, you'll benefit from things like unlimited device access, offline notes, PDF annotation, and much larger storage.

Whether you're doing it to be creative or because it's the job, writing with the wrong tools is like wearing a pair of jeans to work out. It's constricting, and lacking the support you need to get the job done.

There are loads of writing apps and tools in the Play Store--so many that by the time you find the apps you need, you probably won't be in the mood to write anymore. Avoid the exhaustion by scrolling down and checking out our list of helpful writer's tools and word processing apps.

JotterPad is a full-fledged word processor disguised as a text editor. It's distraction-free writing with its minimal interface and includes Markdown and extended keyboard support. Folks like JotterPad for the built-in dictionary and thesaurus; you can easily highlight a word or phrase to get suggestions. If you're typing without a physical keyboard, JotterPad offers punctuation shortcuts in its integrated toolbar. There's also cloud integration with services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive, as well as an offline editing mode.

Novelist includes an extensive array of organizational tools for story writers with a focus on outlining. It's not the most comfortable for penning your actual narrative, but it can help you get your thoughts in order. Novelist starts you out with a basic story template, and it's up to you to fill in the blanks. The interface relies on virtual flashcards of sorts, and as you figure out your storyline, you can tap and drag to rearrange the pieces as you see fit. When you're ready to start writing, you can use Novelist to do the deed or paste from another word processing app. Use the schedule feature to track your words-per-day progress. When you finish your novel, you can export into EPUB, HTML, or ODT file formats.

Auctor: Story and Character Generator

Stuck on where to start? Auctor is a simple tool to help get you revved up about writing. The app offers outline help and an automatic character generator and a plain word processor for eking out bits of your story. There's also a community component to the app that can help if you feel like you could use extra support. There are weekly writing prompts with plenty of ideas from community members to help you get started, and you can even submit your own. There's also a weekly writing challenge, though you'll need to view an ad before submitting your piece. Writing Prompts

If you like the idea of joining a community of writers, Writing Prompts is another free option. The app connects you to a message board filled with random writing prompts categorized by genres. You can follow individual prompters if there happens to be a repeat with suggestions that inspire you. When you're ready to share your work, you can submit your story to the global message board to strut your stuff. Writing Prompts features limited moderation. There is an option to report questionable content that makes it through to the global feed.

WriterTools

Writing can be daunting, but tackling it in bits is the best way to get through it. WriterTools is an automatic project manager, with features like timeline and character outlining. Each section requires you to go in-depth with descriptions, which can be particularly helpful if you're struggling for flowery language. Other features include a writing progress tracker, a built-in thesaurus, and a beta option to use your browser for typing.

Whether you want to fill a spare moment with a bit of creative fun, or need inspiration for a writing project, here are five creative writing apps that could help.

They’re all free to use, and I’ve included a mix of iOS and Android options. I have an iPhone myself, but also a handy  emulator on my laptop which lets me try out and enjoy apps designed for Android devices.

So, to the apps themselves. Here are the five creative writing apps I’ve been exploring lately:

For Android and iOS

Paperblanks® journal prompts.

This attractive app offers a mix of self-reflective and story prompts, so you can use your writing time for self-discovery or to unleash your imagination. You can tailor the type of prompts given to you by choosing from a range of categories, including Personal/Introspective, Story-A-Day and Just For Fun. Or you can enable all categories to enjoy a pot luck approach! Save the prompts you particularly like using the favourites feature and return to them with fresh eyes later.

When you launch the app, you’re taken on a journey through various warm up exercises, onwards to character development exercises and finally through to some sample writing prompts. You can complete each exercise in sequence, or jump between them via the navigation menu. When you’re ready, you can pay to unlock even more content, including ‘A Year of Prompts’.

Rhyme builder.

This app is a handy rhyming dictionary and notepad in one. Type out a line and the dictionary will provide a whole host of rhymes to choose from. You can keep on matching rhymes until you’ve found a combination that you particularly like. Then save it and start afresh. I found myself saving a few separate rhymes in the app itself and then bringing them together in one place (my notebook) later on.

Creativity is fickle. Sometimes you're on a roll, with new ideas spawning left and right, while other times you're stuffing your face into a pillow, screaming because your brain has been wrung dry. It may not be possible to be creative on demand, but you can always work towards cultivating said creativity on a daily basis. Nowadays, you can even use mobile apps to help give you a creative boost.

A word of disclaimer before we delve into the apps, though. These apps are meant to exercise the creativity that already exists. Through practice, you can strengthen your creativity muscles and end up with a more creative approach to life, but these apps will not make you into a creative person. If you're feeling blocked, that's one thing, but if you don't have any inclination towards creativity, these apps probably won't help you out very much.

Plot Generator [No Longer Available]

Plot Generator is, as the name would imply, a great place to start when you need a seed for a new plot. This plot could be for a story you're writing, a role-playing campaign that you're developing, or even for a fictional world that you're building but never intend to make public. Whatever the reason, Plot Generator will help you out.

It works by randomizing the four key aspects of any story: the premise, the detail, the complication, and the objective. All told, there are over 320,000 different combinations so you can be sure you won't run out of plot ideas for a long while. The free version is supported with ads but you can upgrade to Plot Generator Pro for just $0.99 USD.

Tarot Cards [No Longer Available]

Despite the occult mystique that surrounds the whole tarot business, if you can take a step back from all of that and see tarot cards for what they really are - a deck of cards filled with intricate details that play off of each other in surprisingly interesting ways - then you can use them to jumpstart your creativity. This Tarot Cards app goes a little further than just allowing you to draw cards, though.

When you draw cards, you'll also see a full explanation of what the card means and what important occult details are tied to that card. For example, when drawing "The Moon," you'll see all of the associated keywords (cycles, emotions, intensity, reflection, etc.) as well as a deeper explanation of what the card stands for in terms of meaning.

Just as tarot cards can be used to divine someone's fate, you can exercise your creativity by applying the meaning of tarot cards to other realms. Apply them to characters, settings, concepts, and in the case of non-fiction writing, try to incorporate them in your essays. That should quickly inspire some creativity.

Writing Prompts

I've written before about creative writing prompts and how helpful they can be to someone who's stuck. Often the problem with creativity is that we have too much freedom. There are too many choices and we become paralyzed due to the paradox of choice . Writing prompts offer us a starting point, which can alleviate a lot of the stress that comes with "finding creativity."

There are many writing prompt websites, but what if you want to use prompts on the go? Sure, you can browse through them on your smartphone's browser, but wouldn't it be easier to have a source of prompts in app form? That way you can carry them around with you no matter where you go - even when you don't have web access.

Writing Prompts divides its prompts into multiple categories, like history, science, fantasy, events, crime, and more. If the default set isn't enough, you can buy more prompt packs for $0.99 USD each.

CardBoard Index Cards

I find that keeping my thoughts organized actually breeds more creative breakthroughs, and few tactics have worked better than index cards. They act as neat little compartments of information that can be freely rearranged, stacked, shuffled, and manipulated in various ways. This helps me to see things in a new perspective every time, and that can really help with blocked creativity.

Despite the less-than-stellar interface, CardBoard Index Cards is a functional index card app that will help you with on-the-fly organization. You can create and maintain multiple cards and you can keep them ordered in whatever layout you like. Keep track of unused ideas or use them for novel plot details. Whatever the case, they'll definitely help you in one way or another.

There's actually an add-on to this app called CardBoard Novels , which adds a bunch of different card types to aid with story structure, character archetypes, plot details, and scene ideas. It's a fantastic resource and the addon is free, just like the main app. If you need something more like flash cards, here are some good Android flash card apps .

As Saikat explains, mindmapping tools are some of the best ways to brainstorm, and brainstorming is an essential part of generating creativity. He recently compiled a list of Android mindmapping apps but I want to single out SimpleMind because I think it deserves a mention on this list as one of the best mindmapping tools, period.

As the term suggests, mindmapping is the act of mapping various ideas together so that you can clearly see the relations between various concepts and ideas at a glance. SimpleMind is great because it has a clean and intuitive interface that makes this super easy, even when you're stuck on an older smartphone with a small screen. Since most of the app involves simple taps, drags, and drops, it's almost as easy as using pen and paper.

For $4.99 USD, you can upgrade to SimpleMind Pro , which adds a whole bunch of advanced features like visual styles, hyperlinking between maps, inserting images, collapsing and expanding branches on large maps, viewing multiple maps on one page, organizing maps into folders, and more. If you try the free version and think you'll use it a lot, the Pro version is an absolute must.

Rory's Story Cubes [Broken URL Removed]

Rory's Story Cubes is the only app on this list that can't be used for free, but it's so useful that I just had to include it anyway. The basic premise of the app is this: you have nine different cubes (they look like dice) and each cube has a unique picture on all six sides. You can shake the app to roll them around, effectively randomizing them, and piece together the nine cubes to form a coherent story. There are over 10 million combinations for you to explore.

These story cubes can be used in a bunch of different ways. For starters, they can help you flesh out the plot for your unfinished novel, or they can just be starting points to get your creative juices flowing. You can use them as a way to practice improvisation - roll the cubes and start telling a story from die to die. They can even be used as a tool in a story-related game that you come up with.

Rory's Story Cubes costs $2.25 USD to buy and you can purchase additional dice sets through in-app purchases. I think it's a great app and should be part of any serious writer's app arsenal.

Sometimes creativity stops flowing because of factors outside of your control: stress, repetition, lack of passion, etc. Sometimes creativity is there but it's not to the level that you know is possible. The apps in this list can help you. They'll get you thinking about things in a new light, forcing your mind to approach ideas from a different angle - and that's how pretty much all creativity starts, isn't it?

You can also organize notes, concepts, research, and whole documents into its “Binder” for easy access and reference. 

Scrivener differs from other apps on this list in that it won't assist you with your writing style — but it will provide everything you need to keep writing. For instance, if you’re writing a novel or a screenplay, you can write when inspiration strikes without worrying if it's in chronological order, as the drag-and-drop interface allows you to easily move sections to another place at a later date. You can also add synopses and overviews to each chapter, which helps when you want to ‘zoom out’ and look at your novel or screenplay as a whole. Plus, Scrivener allows you to keep all your notes and research in one place, supporting photos and audio files, too.

ChatGPT can assist in producing high-quality content that’s grammatically correct and coherent. It also processes and analyzes information quickly, generating text much faster than a human. This can be especially useful if you need to write a large amount of content in a short amount of time — you can ask it to generate an explanation of a complex topic, for example, instead of needing to write this out yourself.   

However, as listed in the image above, ChatGPT’s responses can sometimes be factually incorrect or can include biases. Its creator, OpenAI, has also warned users that ChatGPT’s arguments can be logically flawed. And while the tool is known for its supposed versatility, we don’t recommend using it to generate creative writing. There’s only so much an algorithm can do, and thankfully humans win when it comes to being uniquely creative. 

Overall, ChatGPT is a great tool for quick, surface-level overviews; idea generation, summarizing information, and creating outlines are all made simpler by the tool. 4. Evernote: Saving your wonderful thoughts for reference

Most writers carry a notebook to jot down ideas when inspiration strikes. At 92, Sheila Baslaw published her debut children’s book, The Light Keeper, co-authored with Karen Levine. The book is a tribute to Baslaw’s father’s life, set in a small Russian village during the early 20th century. Her journey, sparked later in life, reflects the wisdom and dedication that many older authors bring to the table, proving that it’s never too late to pursue a long-held dream.

I often think of my grandmother, who, as she grew older, always had a book in hand or was working on a creative project. Whether it was painting or writing small journal entries, she constantly found ways to engage her mind. There’s a common expression that staying mentally active can help “keep the mind sharp,” and my grandmother embodied this. The act of creating, whether it’s through reading or writing, seemed to be her way of staying mentally agile.

Many older adults, like Baslaw, are finding that writing later in life not only fulfills long-held aspirations but also serves as a tool for cognitive health. Programs such as Opening Minds through Art (OMA) at the Scripps Gerontology Center promote the use of art and storytelling to help older adults, particularly those with dementia, engage their imagination and improve their overall well-being. Through initiatives like OMA, seniors can embrace new roles as creators, leaving behind a legacy of artwork and stories.

This aligns with what many researchers suggest—that engaging the brain in creative activities helps delay cognitive decline. As the philosopher Michel de Montaigne once said, “The mind is a fire to be kindled, not a vessel to be filled.” This sentiment captures the essence of lifelong learning and creativity. For older adults, writing is not just a hobby but a way to keep that fire burning, maintaining mental sharpness and emotional resilience.

Programs Supporting Senior Writers

There are numerous writing programs designed specifically for older adults. For instance, Senior Planet offers a Creative Writing Club , where seniors gather twice a month to share their work and connect with others. First-time authors often bring a wealth of life experience and perspective that younger writers may not yet possess. For example, Laura Ingalls Wilder, who published her first Little House book at age 65, shared her experiences growing up on her father’s childhood in Russia, preserving a piece of family and cultural history for future generations.
