Ardha Shathadham Review: A Mindless Violence
OTT Movie: Ardha Shathadham Cast: Karthik Rathnam, Krishna Priya, Naveen Chandra, Subhalekha Sudhakar, Sai Kumar, Amani, and others Producers: Chitti Kiran Ramoju, Telu Radha Krishna Music: Nawfal Raja Direction: Rawindra Pulle Streaming on: Aha Video Release Date: June 11, 2021
"Aha” video is continuing to offer exclusive movies amid lockdown. “Ardha Shatabdham” is the latest film that premieres on this OTT platform.
Let’s analyze.
The theme of caste violence or honor killings has lately become a regular trend in Telugu cinema. Directed by newcomer Rawindra Pulle, “Ardha Sathabdham” delves into the caste system in Telangana.
Set in Siricilla in 2003, the film begins as a romantic tale. Krishna (Karthik Ratham) is in love with Pushpa (Krishna Priya), who is the daughter of former Maoist leader Ramanna (Sai Kumar). Krishna has been in love with her since their school days but she does not reciprocate the same. It is one-way love.
Krishna is from the weaving community but runs a tent house. The story takes a doomy turn when Krishna assumes that the village’s Sarpanch’s son gave her a flower from a plant that he has been planning to propose to her with.
Krishna and his friends beat the Sarpanch's son. The already simmering heat between the Sarpanch and his rival Veeranna turns violent due to this incident, and caste violence ensues.
First and foremost, director Rawindra’s ideas are vague. Is the film really about the caste issue or laws or constitutional ideas? In the name of caste, two factions unleash massacre, killings happen in the daylight in the main streets, but an S.I and two constables wait outside the village waiting for orders from a higher police officer as to what action should be taken? Have the director and producers not given a thought to how unrealistic this looks?
Amid carnage in the Sircilla village, a woman, unrelated to the caste violence incidents, kills her lover as he lusted her sister and drags him onto the roads. Not even a single creature notice or respond? How can we take such scenes seriously? Is Sircilla exist in (undivided) Andhra Pradesh, or Bihar, or Africa?
Added to this, there are dialogues and swear words like “Mo***di” that are unwarranted. When the main lead pair’s love story itself is silly, why would the audience invest in the rest of the story?
Mentioning Sircilla, a textile town, as a ‘village’ is another blunder mistake. Even if we assume the story is taking place in a nearby village, villagers killing each other like factionists in 2003 is a far-fetched idea.
Moreover, the caste conflict in the love story looks forced and seems to have been placed as an afterthought. The love story and the village politics are poles apart from each other.
The characterization of Naveen Chandra as a trigger-happy police officer and his thread into the story is another proof of poor scriptwriting skills. All the hype around his introduction scene peters out in the end, with little relevance to the story. The bookish dialogues between Ajay and Subhalekha Sudhakar are further proof that the director has failed to translate whatever lofty ideas he has in mind onto the screen.
Without a word, the execution is clumsy and the narration is utterly boring.
There is no chemistry between the lead pair. The romantic track is shown mostly as dream songs. Karthik Ratnam of ‘C/o Kancherapalem’ as the young villager in love has done a neat job. Krishna Priya is okay. Sai Kumar and Aamani are worth mentioning among other actors.
One song is lilting. That’s it.
Overall, “Ardha Sathabdam” is another OTT film that is told clumsily with unformed ideas. It joins the list of recent boring movies that hit the OTT space.

‘Ardha Shathabdham’ movie review: Incoherent narration mars interesting ideas
Earnest performances aren’t enough to hold together the telugu film ‘ardha shathabdham’, where romance, caste strife and a discussion on the indian constitution don’t blend seamlessly.
Updated - June 11, 2021 03:58 pm IST
Published - June 11, 2021 03:30 pm IST
Karthik Rathnam and Krishnapriya in the film
- Ardha Shathabdham
- Cast: Karthik Rathnam, Krishnapriya, Sai Kumar, Naveen Chandra
- Direction: Rawindra Pulle
- Streaming on: Aha
It’s a relevant premise. When divisive forces are at work, a seemingly random incident is enough to stoke deep-rooted hatred and spark violence, as shown in the film. Rawindra tries to ask why humanity cannot rise above caste divisions to uphold the tenets of the Indian Constitution.

The film looks at the social fabric issues through its myriad characters — a former Naxal, a youngster in the throes of a romance and seeking job prospects in Dubai, a police officer who is frustrated at having to carry out encounter killings, a politician who doesn’t flinch before doing something unjust, and the villagers who are caught up in their own ideas of caste-based social norms.
All this might have seemed interesting on paper, but doesn’t translate to a cohesive and absorbing narrative.
The opening sequence gives a glimpse of the fissures in the village, with a chieftain declaring that people of a certain caste should continue the work they have been doing over generations, and cannot dream of soaring higher. Oblivious to all this is the love-struck Krishna (Karthik Rathnam) who has been holding a candle for his childhood sweetheart Pushpa (newcomer Krishnapriya).
The first hour or so belongs to Karthik and the music composer Nawfal Raja Asi. Karthik gives in to the naive innocence required to carry off his part and is effective. The dreamy one-sided romance is deliberately languid in its pacing and the Chennai-based music composer accentuates it with tunes that vary from the folksy to the filmi melodies; one song has an unmistakable resonance of A R Rahman’s ‘ Raasathi’ ( Thiruda Thiruda ; 1993) though this one isn’t completely A Cappella. Though the music, the picturisation, and the lead pair are enjoyable to watch, little else happens.
At once, newer and complex characters that are distraught with the ways of society or battling their inner demons, come to the fore. After an innocuous incident leads to mayhem in the village, the narrative begins to meander.
Some of the scenes showing the violence in the village look amateurish. And too much happens without synergy. Cop Ranjith’s (Naveen Chandra) rage is understandable and so is the inner conflict of former rebel Ramanna (Sai Kumar). The discussion between a top cop (Ajay) and the MLA (Sudhakar) on what the Indian Constitution stands for and whether the killing of innocents can be justified, could have been an interesting one. But it gets boring, like the rest of the film.
For the most part, the acting remains earnest and that’s the only saving grace. Krishnapriya is expressive and has a striking screen presence. Naveen Chandra holds attention whenever he’s in the frame, but one wishes his character had been better written. The same goes for Sai Kumar and Aamani, whose presence could have been used even better. A host of other actors, including Ajay and Raja Ravindra, are wasted.
What Ardha Shathabdham lacks is a narrative with a beating heart that could have made us root for the characters.

Ardha shatabdham movie review.
'Ardha Shatabdham' today started streaming on Aha. The direct OTT release features non-star faces. Is it worth a watch? Here we tell you.
Krishna (Karthik Rathnam) has been in love with Pushpa (Krishna Priya) from childhood. The girl's father Ramanna (Sai Kumar), a former Maoist, is a doting dad. While Pushpa doesn't have feelings for Krishna, by a quirk of fate, a misunderstanding develops.
A heavy drama involving Naveen Chandra (a sub-inspector) and a few other characters with a stake in the village's so-called honour unfolds. Can Krishna ever win his love?
Performances
Karthik Rathnam has repeatedly played the villager's role since 'C/O Kancharapalem'. In the film under review, he essays a full-fledged role, especially in the first half. He has whole songs dedicated to his familiar feelings. The actor manages to make some impact. Krishna Priya should have been a fitting pair.
Sai Kumar, for all the heavy-duty lines that he speaks, is somewhat jaded. Naveen Chandra, who plays a mercurial cop with a heart, fits the bill. Ajay and Subhalekha Sudhakar , who are engaged in a serious conversation, don't raise the bar. Raja Ravindra 's character gets a raw deal. Aamani and Pavithra Lokesh play typical and over-sentimental mothers. Suhas shines in a cameo.
Technical aspects
Nawfal Raja AIS's songs flow with the mood of the film. But the BGM fails to create a sombre mood in the second half. It had to be really earnest for a film like this. Ashker, Venkat R Shakamuri, and EJ Venu's cinematography is in keeping with the overall modest technical appeal of the movie.
Anji's action choreography should have given jump scares or at least a couple of edge-of-the-scene moments.
Half of the movie unfolds over the span of a day in a village ravaged by irreconcilable caste-based differences. This very nature of the story should have prompted the use of a number of inventive screenplay devices. Writer-director Rawindra Pulle, instead, stages the riots in the village in a very lazy manner.
After a point, the calamitous events in the village don't bother the audience. It's because the film doesn't weave an emotional core in the first half. It becomes obsessed with Krishna's romantic feelings for Pushpa, who is framed in a series of cliched scenes and a raft of songs.
The attempts to create humour between the male lead and his friends is a dampener. The drama around a rose flower that Krishna dreams of gifting to Pushpa works as an idea. In terms of execution, however, one feels it should have been way too earnest and not sudden.
A small incident, which is at best an irritant, leads to a major law and order calamity. Amidst all this, Naveen Chandra 's SI character, Ajay 's SP character and Subhaleka Sudhakar's politician character are mere bystanders for the most part.
The climax seems to have been staged with the intention of making BR Ambedkar's statue sob. The writer of the Constitution would indeed be grieving today at the sight of caste-based killings in rural India. But the film spoon-feeds everything and is too straightforward in conveying its message against casteism. The cinema audience in Ambedkar would have rather preferred subtle films such as 'Karnan' (Tamil) to the superficial 'Ardha Shatabdham'.
Closing Remarks
If you are in a mood to watch a half-jovial, half-serious village-based love-action drama that is given to a number of flaws, give this one a try. At less than two hours, it's not that huge waste of your time.

What Is It About?
In a story of the early 2000s, a lower-casted young man Krishna (Karthik Rathnam) falls in love with his childhood crush Pushpa (Krishna Priya), who is the daughter of an upper-caste Ex-Maoist Ramanna (Sai Kumar). Ramanna tries to enlighten the people through folklore performed by his daughter.
A small conflict triggered by Krishna and his friends due to the love affair, snowballs into a giant caste war in the village leading to many unexpected incidents, leaving many unanswered questions. When Ramanna is caught between the ideologies he believed all his life and the casteist inside himself, his decision and the consequences thereafter form the story.
Performances
Karthik Rathnam of C/o Kancharapalem suits the character and he performs fine. He is choosing offbeat characters mostly and he does justice to them. Debutante Krishna Priya as Pushpa is okay. Sai Kumar as Ramanna excels in his role. This is just a cakewalk for him.
Raja Ravindra, Pavithra Lokesh, Aamani, and Pithamagan Mahadevan are fine in their respective roles. Naveen Chandra did well with his character as an ethical but helpless police officer. He often gets sandwiched between political pressure and sensibility.
Ajay and Subhaleka Sudhakar appear as high-ranked police officer and politician respectively. The conversation between them is thought-provoking and engaging. They both did well in their respective roles. Late actor TNR appears in a brief role. Suhas did a blink-and-miss role.
Technicalities
Ardha Satabdham is a story with Telangana’s Siricilla backdrop sometime back in the early 2000s. The language, attires, and properties used were apt.
Though a song or two are melodious, they turn speed breakers as they were used to show the love story in Krishna’s daydreams.
Editing could have been better. Dialogues are good. Cinematography is fine. The movie appears a bit slowed down in the beginning before the actual plot unravels. The massacre scenes could have been shot a little better.
Cuss words were used liberally, but they don’t appear irrelevant with the narration and storyline.

Songs Lag in first half
Ardha Satabdham is a story based on deep-rooted castism that still prevails and throws up unanswerable questions even after five decades of independence. The director tells us a story of democratic violence where the oppressed and the oppressor get destroyed at the same time.
A lower-casted young man who thinks his childhood crush is loving him gets into a scuffle with an upper-casted man, which quickly escalates into a bloody caste massacre in the village. Things easily get upscaled with pre-existing discrimination in society.
The politician’s order to put down the girl and the boy is a classic example of political violence. The politician’s justification on why the people won’t change and how the constitution is being used is well written and performed.
The director points out that no one ever understood the true meaning of liberation and independence even after five decades we earned it. The crucial conversation between the SP and the politician emphasizes how the constitution is being used by many to keep the oppression alive. To underline modern Indian society’s discrimination, the politician brings up the Karamchedu massacre. Some powerful lines like ‘Caste is the constitution that is unwritten yet unerasable’ are well written.
Apart from the political angle that demands the encounter of the boy and the girl, the role of the girl’s father is neatly written. When heard about his daughter eloping with Krishna, Ramanna gets caught between his casteist himself and his ideology that does not believe in the caste system. The struggle within himself at that point and the bitterness when he is left helpless with the caste taking over everything he believed and loved, is very well shown.
The director shows how the system fails before the caste, even when the political violence takes a step back and when the casteist father realizes the fact.
Bottom line: A Failed Love Story

Ardha Shathabdham

Ardhashathabdam Review
- GreatAndhra 2/5 There is no chemistry between the lead pair. The romantic track is shown mostly as dream songs. Karthik Ratnam of ‘C/o Kancherapalem’ as the young villager in love has done a neat job. Krishna Priya is okay. Sai Kumar and Aamani are worth mentioning among other actors. Overall, “Ardha Sathabdam” is another OTT film that is told clumsily with unformed ideas. It joins the list of recent boring movies that hit the OTT space. More text -->
- Pinkvilla 2/5 The characters look frozen and the moral dilemmas are not properly fleshed out. Tribal loyalties trump humanity, but everything plays out in a blind fashion. On the one hand, we have acclaimed movies like 'Karnan' (Tamil), which too dealt with the subject of caste violence. On the other hand, we have an 'Ardha Shatabdham', where a sociological catastrophe pans out like in a regular film. More text -->
- Mirchi9 2/5 Overall, Ardha Shatabdham is an honest attempt that wastes a lot of time to get to the point. However, once it does, it manages to engage moderately, in parts, despite the hackneyed plot involving caste angle. Give it a try, but with zero expectations as you have the forward option. Sircilla has been a municipality since the 1980s but it becomes a village for the story setting of new director Rawindra Pulle’s ‘Ardha Shathabdham’. Set in 2003, ‘Ardha Shathabdham’ (half-century) addresses the issue of class and caste discrimination even after 50 years of Independence and the existence of the constitution of India. That the marginalized classes were still not getting equal treatment in society is the point the film tries to convey. And this message is hyperlinked to a love story.
Thus the story begins in Sircilla village in 2003, with the local boy Krishna (Karthika Rathnam) is trying to propose to Pushpa (Krishna Priya). While she doesn’t love him, he imagines her as his girlfriend, and he even indulges in dream songs of marrying her. After many months, realization strikes him that he has a nurtured dream that is one-sided and he read the signals wrongly.
His wrongdoing leads to a chain of actions in the village leading to the crescendo of caste violence. Police officer Ranjith (Naveen Chandra) steps into the village to bring peace. On the other hand, Pushpa’s father Ramanna (Sai Kumar), a former moist leader who shuns caste, faces a conflict as well. The love story and the village politics take a violent turn.
Director Rawindra Pulle sure does have lofty ideas but his intention is appreciable but his narrative is half-baked, lacks engagement.
The one-sided love story occupies nearly 50 minutes of the 2-hour runtime, and the romantic tracks are not at all compelling at any point.
The interval bang is even more passive.
The caste conflict and the violence look superficial, and out of place for the Telangana region. Plus, an entire village is taking swords and fighting with each other in the style of faction feuds in Telangana is unimaginable, even though the honor killings have lately been recorded.
‘Bathukamma’ festivals, Praja Natya Mandali meetings, the Maoist angle, etc are captured well to depict the rural Telangana’s culture and lifestyle. However, when it comes to telling the story convincingly and engagingly, it falters big time.
Primarily, the romance between the young couple is not mutual. It is a one-sided love. So, by adding a caste angle to this love story, every sequence in the film looks artificial, nothing is organic.
C/O Kancharapalem-fame Karthik Rathnam has played the main lead role. He fits well in the role of a lover boy from a lower-middle-class. Malayali girl Krishna Priya also suits well to her role. But there is nothing to rave about any of the performances here. Naveen Chandra’s character is clumsily written and the actor plays it nonchalantly. This character is a perfect example that how half-baked ideas are thrown into the film.
Music and cinematography are good.
Bottom-line: ‘Ardha Sathabdham’ has lofty intentions, but it falters in the narrative. Weak direction and vague ideas have marred the film. The ideas are lost in translation.

Ardha Shathabdham Movie Review: Amateur making casts a shadow over this well-intentioned misfire
Rating: ( 1.5 / 5).
Opening scenes can often be deceiving. They can delude us into believing we are in for a great film only to leave us betrayed at the end of it all. Set in 2003, Rawindra Pulle’s Ardha Shathabdam , opens with a caste-fueled conflict. One of the villagers of Sircilla is persecuted by the members of the village panchayat for opening a barbershop, an occupation that must be ‘rightfully’ practiced only by people of a particular caste. The scene segues to an opening montage number illustrating the lifestyle of the village dwellers, and the sequence is specifically designed to emphasise the different occupations people adapt for a living. We see farmers, weavers, lumberjacks, sculptors, tailors, barbers, butchers, metalsmiths, pot-makers, and more.

What could be a better way to start a film about caste conflict than representing the various occupations, which, for generations, have been interlaced with caste? As we see some of them looking straight at the lens sporting broad smiles, Ardha Shathabdam, for a few moments, becomes a documentary, and is elicits a lovely response. But... this feeling soon fades away.
The authenticity of the opening stretch wears down as cinematic cliches start eroding the screenplay just minutes later. The writers palaver for over 45 minutes on the feeble and the often exasperating love story between Krishna (Karthik Rathnam, trying his best to salvage an underdeveloped script) and Pushpa (Krishna Priya, who simply exists in the frame). The film breaks into musical montages or songs every time the two come face-to-face, making Uppena look like a masterclass in song placement. Although the screenplay reels us back in time to their school days to set up their love story, we barely care for them. Even an emotional callback to this school during the final moments of the film hardly left an impression. Perhaps, the filmmaker felt the need to properly develop the love angle because it doubles up as the ‘incitement factor’ later in the screenplay. However, by the time this plot point arrives, I was restless.
Pushpa is the daughter of Ramanna (Sai Kumar in a character he can pull off in slumber), a former Naxalite who has forged his identity by standing up against caste inequality. However, he wastes no time in standing up for the inequality when he hears an inane dialogue from his nemesis. The crude line goes, “ mana pakkana unna vaadu mana kulam kaakapoina parledhu, kaani mana bidda pakkalo undetodu mana vaadu ayyundali (It’s fine if the man beside us belongs to a different caste but it’s unacceptable for a guy from that caste to share the bed with our daughters).” Deterrents like the wavering politics of a character or how emotional frailties indoctrinate a person are fascinating issues to argue about, and I would have loved it for the film to give us nuanced arguments to ponder on. However, the incoherent narrative puts you off on a fundamental level, and how!
The entire second half of the film is centered on caste-related riots enkindled by Krishna’s foolish act and an equally trifling screenplay. Blood-thirsty people prowl across streets, massacring anyone and everyone. Even then we barely feel the lurking threat, and at certain points, the badly choreographed and terribly enacted scenes besmirch the scant emotional resonance that the writing tries to accomplish.
The villagers are slashed and killed, but they remain faceless extras, never to make a humanistic impression. The deaths and heinous hate crimes too leave us indifferent to the pain and sadness as we hardly know the people being butchered; the film’s devoid of the sense of belonging and kinship. When the filmmaker can spend 40 minutes on a juvenile love story, why not spend a couple of extra minutes to instill a sense of affinity towards these villagers? At one point, a low-caste man is hacked to death after having his genitals cleaved for stealing mangoes from the garden belonging to a higher caste person. We later see the perpetrators make sly remarks about his widow, who is now a cobbler. A scene as such should ideally leave our blood boiling, but it’s the tragic violin score that nudged me to feel sorry for the helpless woman. That’s the issue... the film fails to organically provoke you with its story-telling.
We also have a police officer (Ajay) in a conversation with a skewed politician (Subhalekha Sudhakar). Interestingly, they double up for right and wrong. The politician spouts allegories and analogies while the policeman is practical. Their discourse reflects the film’s idea—the disparity between the theoretical and pragmatic reading of the caste system and its consequences. The exchange—the clash of ideologies—is well-intentioned but inefficacious, and at times, frustrating, just like the film.

Ardha Satabdham is a story with Telangana's Siricilla backdrop sometime back in the early 2000s. The language, attires, and properties used were apt.
