Prospective first-year applicants are students who have not graduated from high school at the time of application.

How to Apply

First-year applicants will submit their application to Pepperdine through the Common Application . The Common Application is available each year on August 1. Applying to Pepperdine is a multi-step process, so be sure to review the process and requirements sections below.

Application process,   step 1: submit all parts of the common application.

The Common Application is a multipart process that includes submission of the Common Application, the Pepperdine Questions, and Pepperdine Writing Supplement. All parts must be submitted through the Common Application website. Be sure to review your Common App dashboard to ensure that all parts have been submitted successfully.

Important: You will receive a final confirmation email from the Seaver College Office of Admission within 48 hours of our office receiving your Common Application submission. Please save and print this final confirmation. This final confirmation ensures successful completion of Step 1.

  STEP 2: Submit Additional Required Materials

• Include your  Common Application ID on all documents you submit. This will assist in the accurate and timely processing of your application file.
• All additional materials must be submitted or postmarked by the application deadline.
• We strongly recommend that you submit as many materials in electronic format as possible as this will expedite processing of your application file.

  STEP 3: Monitor Your Application and To-Do Lists

Monitor your application to-do lists via the Pepperdine Applicant Portal to verify that items have been received by the Admission Office. There will be a delay between submission of an item and reflection in your Applicant Portal to-do list. Do not send multiple copies of the same item. This will cause delay of processing your file. We recommend verifying on your Common Application account and with your school that all materials have been submitted in a timely manner.

In addition to the Common App Personal Essay, applicants are required to submit a written response via the Common App to the following Pepperdine question:

Students, faculty, and staff members from all backgrounds participate in conversations of faith inside and outside of the classroom. Considering that Pepperdine is a Christian university, why are you interested in attending and how would you contribute to conversations of faith on campus? (300-500 words)

  Official High School Transcripts

• Official high school transcripts are required of all prospective first-year students who have not yet graduated at the time of application. Please include your Common Application ID on all documents you submit. This will assist in the accurate and timely processing of your application file.
• If your school official has already submitted your transcript via the Common Application, please do not send additional hard copies as this will delay our ability to process your application file. Instead, please verify that these items were submitted on the School Forms tab in the Common Application system.
• If you have attended more than one high school, you must submit an official transcript from each school if the grades from the earlier school(s) do not appear on your last high school transcript.
• If you have attended high school(s) outside of the United States, you must submit official copies of each international transcript and any certified external exam results, regardless of whether the grades appear on your current school's transcript. Visit the  international admission website for instructions. 
• A cumulative sixth-semester transcript (through grade 11) must be submitted at the time of application.
• If accepted, the final transcript with graduation date listed must be submitted prior to enrollment.

Transcripts can either be submitted from the school through the Common Application   Naviance system , Parchment ,  National Student Clearinghouse , or SCOIR .

Submit by Mail

If the transcripts are mailed, they must be official with an original signature of the school official(s) or the school seal on the transcript and sent directly from the school or submitted in an envelope sealed by the school. Transcripts should be mailed to the following address:

  Academic Recommendation

The Academic Letter of Recommendation must be from a core subject (math, science, English, history, foreign language, religion) teacher or counselor who is familiar with the applicant's academic standing.

Include your Common Application ID on all documents you submit. This will assist in the accurate and timely processing of your application file.

Ways to Submit Academic Letter of Recommendation

Option A: Pepperdine Recommendation Form You can use this form to submit a request for your recommender to complete your recommendation.

Option B: Common Application Recommendation Form Once in the Common Application, select "My Colleges" in the left-hand menu, and then "Assign Recommenders." Enter the required information for the form. Please note: you will need your recommender's name, position title, email address, and work phone number to complete the form. Your recommender will then be contacted and invited to submit your recommendation through the Common Application system. If your school official has already submitted your recommendation via the Common Application, please do not send additional hard copies as this will delay our ability to process your application file. Instead, please verify that these items were submitted on the School Forms tab in the Common Application system. Please see the video walkthrough for more information.

Option C: Scoir You can submit a request for your recommender to complete your recommendation through Scoir.

Please note: In order for Pepperdine to receive your recommendation, you must correctly assign your school official(s) to your Pepperdine application.  It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all required materials for the admission application file are received by the Office of Admission by the applicable deadline in order to be considered by the Admission Committee.

  SAT I or ACT Test Scores (Optional)

Pepperdine is test optional, and students will receive the same consideration for admission regardless of whether they submit test scores. However, p lease note that SAT/ACT scores are required in order to be considered for the Regents Scholars Program scholarships. Please visit the FAQs page for more information.

If you choose to submit test scores,  you have the option to submit scores through your Common Application, an official score report from the testing agency, or the form in your Pepperdine Application Portal. If test scores are self-reported at the time of application, official test scores will be required upon enrollment at Pepperdine. Please note that we do not accept test scores sent by email or through your school.

Fall applicants must take the SAT I or ACT by October in order to meet the November 1 early action deadline or by December in order to meet the January 15 application deadline. The optional ACT writing test and SAT writing/essay section are neither required nor recommended. The SAT II Subject Tests are also not required.

  Interview (Optional)

• Pepperdine is committed to ensuring all students are evaluated fairly, therefore transcripts from each high school attended must be sent directly to Pepperdine University for evaluation. Grades transferred or translated from a previous school onto a current transcript are not accepted. If your current high school is within the United States, the U.S. high school may submit a copy of the original official transcript they received from a previous school.
• If transcripts are not in English, English translations should be included.
• Students from educational systems with external exams (i.e. (I)GCSE/AS results, CBSE Board exams, etc.) should submit certified external exam results in addition to internal marks to finalize the high school transcript requirement.
• Students who have completed A levels must request the official exam results from the testing agency (i.e. CIE, Edexcel, AQA) to be sent directly to Pepperdine.
• Students who have completed an IB certificate of diploma, must request the official exam results from the IB organization (IBO) to finalize their high school transcript requirement and be considered for advanced standing credit.
• If applicable, students must submit official transcripts from any dual enrollment college.
• If your school official has already submitted your transcript via the Common Application, please do not send additional hard copies as this will delay our ability to process your application file. • If an applicant is discovered to have falsified their academic documentation, Pepperdine University reserves the right to deny admission or dismiss the student from course study.

Secondary Credentials Required by Country

  STEP 3: Submit Official SAT I or ACT Scores (Optional)

For the 2021-22 academic year, submission of SAT or ACT scores is optional for all international applicants, including US citizens who are completing their secondary education outside of the United States. Please note, this is an updated policy in response to the sharp decline of exams offered due to COVID-19 and is subject to change for future terms.

Although we do not require test scores, you have the option to submit either official test scores through the testing agency or self reported test scores through our test score form. Once your application has been processed, you will receive access to the Pepperdine Applicant Portal where you can access the test score form. If test scores are self-reported at the time of application, official test scores will be required upon admission to Pepperdine. Please note that self-reported test scores will only be accepted through Pepperdine's test score form. Test scores reported on the Common Application or transcripts will not be accepted.

If you choose to submit scores, the International Admission Committee will consider all official test scores from multiple test dates. We will use the highest composite score from among each test that you've taken. This is called super scoring. There is no limit to the number of test scores you may submit to us for your application.

NOTE: When taking the SAT/ACT, if you have used a different name (e.g. nickname, middle name, etc.) or a different email address from the one used for your Common Application, you MUST notify our office by sending an email to [email protected] , so that your test scores are appropriately matched to your record..

If a recommender is going to submit a recommendation letter through the mail or a Pepperdine recommendation form, you are still required to "assign" and fill in the information on the Common Application. Tell your recommender to ignore the Common App form, and we will manually link the recommendation letter (sent by mail or via a Pepperdine recommendation form) to your application file.

You must have all areas in the Common Application "assigned" in order to submit your application. Be aware that the "teacher" and "other recommender" both have to be assigned by you. If these recommenders have not been assigned, you will not be able to submit your application. The "other recommender" will not accept recommendations that are peer or family members.

Option B: Common Application Recommendation Form Once in the Common Application, select "My Colleges" in the left-hand menu, and then "Assign Recommenders." Enter the required information for the form. Please note: you will need your recommender's name, position title, email address, and work phone number to complete the form. Your recommender will then be contacted and invited to submit your recommendation through the Common Application system. If your recommender has already submitted your recommendation via the Common Application, please do not send additional hard copies as this will delay our ability to process your application file. Instead, please verify that these items were submitted on the School Forms tab in the Common Application system.

Option C: Hard Copy Letters We prefer that recommendations be submitted online using an option above. However, if you are unable to use our forms, written recommendations or traditional letters can be mailed to the address below. Please make sure that the person completing your recommendation includes your first name, last name, current school, city, and state. Include your Common Application ID on all documents you submit. This will assist in the accurate and timely processing of your application file.

  STEP 5: Submit Proof of English Proficiency

International first-year applicants must submit proof of English proficiency, which may be demonstrated by one of the following:

• SAT I Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 600 and above
• ACT Reading score of 24 and above
• TOEFL iBT (or TOEFL iBT Home Edition) score of 85 and above - *Please note that Pepperdine does not accept TOEFL "MyBest Scores" 
• C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency) of 186 and above
• Duolingo English Test score of 120 and above
• IELTS (or IELTS Indicator) overall score of 6.5 and above
• A "B" or better in a transferable English Composition course (not ESL) at an accredited US college or university
• A "C" or better on the UK system AS or A-Level English Exams (not ESL), or Hong Kong system HKALE English Exam
• The ELS Language Centers' Master level 112 class with a grade of B or higher
• IB 1 English grade result of 5 or better (not ESL)
• 4 years of study at a high school in which English is the medium of instruction - subject to verification by an admissions counselor

  STEP 6: English Proficiency Supplements - Optional

In order to further demonstrate English communication skills, international applicants may submit interviews from InitialView or Vericant.   STEP 7: Monitor Your Application and To-Do Lists

Monitor your application to-do lists via the Pepperdine Applicant Portal to verify that items have been received by the OISS. There will be a delay between submission of an item and reflection in your Applicant Portal to-do list. Do not send multiple copies of the same item. This will cause delay of processing your file. We recommend verifying on your Common Application account and with your school that all materials have been submitted in a timely manner. 

  STEP 8: F-1 Visa Application Process

Pepperdine University renders the I-20 after students accept their offer of admission by submitting their Enrollment Form and Tuition Prepayment (Deposit). Please refer to the ISD form on our International Student Portal for further information regarding obtaining your Pepperdine I-20.

Pepperdine is a private Christian university located in Malibu, California. Also, the average SAT total is between 131 and 1460. The average ACT composite score range is similarly high: 29-33. This means that if you want to get into Pepperdine, then strong grades and scores might not be enough. However, like many schools, Pepperdine University is test-optional for the 2021-22 application cycle. How Hard Is It to Get Into Pepperdine?

Pepperdine University is composed of four graduate schools and one undergraduate school, Seaver College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. Seaver College, which follows a traditional liberal arts curriculum, has an acceptance rate of 42%. Out of 11,768 students who applied, 4,925 were accepted. Pepperdine does not have binding Early Decision, but does have non-binding Early Action .

In Fall 2021, the average high school GPA of first-year students at Pepperdine’s Seaver College was 3.69 . 14% of first-year students had 4.0 GPA . 

Of this year’s first-year students at Pepperdine, 40% graduated in the top 10% of their high school class, and 88% graduated in the top 25% . 

For students applying for Fall 2021 to Fall 2023 enrollment, the SAT and ACT will be optional . It’s worth considering, however, that of this year’s (2021–2022) first-year students, 70% submitted SAT scores, and 38% percent submitted ACT scores. The average SAT score of these students was 1280, and the top 25% scored above a 1390 . 

What is Pepperdine Looking For?

As a Christian university, Pepperdine takes pride in being a campus where students grow intellectually and also spiritually—in knowledge, and also in character. Students have rich opportunities to explore their Christian faith within a diverse community, including student-led ministries, “ Seaver 200 ” (a mandatory community-building program for first and second years), and the Spiritual Life Advisors Program . However, Pepperdine welcomes students from all faiths , including those who identify with no particular faith, which composes about 11% of the undergraduate student body. 

Students at Pepperdine will find themselves at a college that values ethical decision-making, critical thinking in a global context, community, service, leadership, and learning at the intersection of faith and reason.

According to their 2020-2021 Common Data Set, Pepperdine considers the following factors “very important” in a student’s application:

1. Achieve at least a 3.7 GPA while taking the most challenging classes available.

Since the average enrolled first-year student’s high school GPA is 3.69, you should aim for a 3.7 GPA to be a competitive candidate when applying to Pepperdine’s Seaver College. This will be the first step to getting the rest of your application read. 

Selective schools, like UC Davis, that receive huge numbers of applicants use a tool called Academic Index —a distillation of your academic performance into a single number—to ease the admissions process. If you fail to meet UC Davis’s Academic Index standard, you risk being seen as academically unqualified and not having your application given serious consideration.  

If your GPA is lower than a 3.7 and you’re earlier on in your high school career, check out our tips for increasing your GPA . If you’re a junior or senior, it will be harder to increase your GPA, so the easiest way to increase your Academic Index is to strengthen your essays or extracurricular activity profile.

2. Cultivate at least one or two Tier 1-2 extracurriculars (find your “ spike ”). 

If your academics are as equally strong as many other applicants, extracurriculars are where you have a chance to stand out and help admissions officers form a better idea of who you are and what you might bring to their campus. 

In addition, Pepperdine places especially high emphasis on extracurriculars because they give admissions officers a sense of how you will fit in and contribute to its service-oriented and close-knit campus. 

In general, any activity that you do regularly outside the classroom counts as an extracurricular, as long as you can demonstrate that the activity has contributed to your growth as an individual. However, not all extracurriculars are created equal . Extracurricular activities can generally be divided into four “tiers.” To increase your chances at Pepperdine, you should have one to two “Tier 1” or “Tier 2” extracurriculars. 

• Tier 1 activities demonstrate exceptional talent, achievement, leadership, or merit. Activities and roles on the national level or which garner field-wide recognition count as Tier 1 activities. This may include winning a national award, qualifying for international competition and therefore gaining prestigious recognition, or starting a nonprofit that gains national traction. Having a Tier 1 activity marks you as a distinguished youth in the field of your activity, so having Tier 1 activities is rare. 
• Tier 2 activities are more common than Tier 1, but still show high levels of achievement and potential. Holding school-wide leadership positions like student government president, winning regional competitions or awards, and local recognition as a student athlete or musician are all considered Tier 2. 
• Tier 3 activities demonstrate sustained participation rather than exceptional achievement, and are frequently seen in applications, both across the board as well as in any given individual student’s application, as some students may have more than one Tier 3 activity. These activities can include holding minor positions in school clubs or being on a Varsity team.
• Tier 4 activities are the most common and have the lowest entry bar; they demonstrate interest without particular dedication. However, they are still important to include, especially if you have higher tier activities, because they can help show the diversity of your interests. Tier 4 activities can include regular volunteering, general membership in clubs or organizations, or taking any kind of music or art lesson over several years. 

Having extracurricular activities on your application shows colleges that you have personal passions and that you can take your skills beyond the classroom. They will show Pepperdine how you have cultivated your practice of the Christian values. While Pepperdine will be happy to see any kind of interest you’ve taken, you’re going to be a much more competitive candidate if you have a few Tier 1 or 2 activities that show dedication and excellence rather than many scattered Tier 4 activities. 

3. Write engaging essays.

Given Pepperdine’s emphasis on student character and personal qualities, it isn’t surprising that Pepperdine highly values the essay. In addition to the Common Application essays, Pepperdine will require you to complete the Pepperdine writing supplement, as well as some short-answer responses. This is the ideal place to show your strengths, character, your authentic voice, as well as the role your faith plays in your life. 4. Make sure your application accurately reflects your relationship to your faith.

Although Pepperdine welcomes students from all faiths, it is first and foremost a Christian university, and is committed to providing students with higher education alongside Christian values and lifestyle. Pepperdine is known for integrating faith and learning, and students who benefit the most from the Pepperdine community will naturally also share its core Christian worldview. 

Make sure you accurately and genuinely depict your relationship to your faith, whether that be Christian or other. <p>So I’m new to this whole forum/thread thing but I figured I’ll give it a try and see what happens!</p>

<p>Ok so I am applying to Pepperdine University in Malibu as an undergrad for the fall semester of 2013. This essay is the last part of my application that I need to do and then I am DONE! WooHoo! I don’t know why but I’ve been struggling with this one so it is a bit iffy. I really appreciate who ever is going to read it but please please please give me your honest feedback and in general what you think about it! And a big THANK YOU in advance to all who happen to wander about this and give it a read(: I really do appreciate all input! </p>

<p>Prompt: Pepperdine University is a Christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership. <p>I come from a family who has ventured down the road less traveled: single mom at the helm, unemployed; 4 brothers; 1 deceased. We’ve regrouped, asked God for direction when things seemed lost. By simply making time for reflection however, my family and I have survived divorce, moved from home to home, and laid to rest the most perfect soul ever created; my brother, Nicholas. We are definitely not your average family, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. The experiences and challenges I’ve endured through my short seventeen years of life have only prepared me for what is yet to come. I feel sincerely blessed at times to have had the opportunities to walk the path I’ve walked, as I’ve walked it with God. I find myself today, looking down at the shoes that have cushioned me through my journey, I feel proud, enlightened even.</p>

<p>On May 17, 1995, I put them on for the first time. Being welcomed into a family of crazy laughs, cheerful cries and joyous screams, I was home. As a child, my family and I spent many Sundays going to church. Growing up with an older brother who had severe disabilities however, our priorities had shifted. I welcomed nurses and support staff into my life, as I learned to help my mother care for him. I never understood why strangers would stare as we walked through the mall or why people approached him with such caution. To me, his abnormalities were invisible, as I had grown accustom to his differences. I simply looked past what held him back, and focused on what helped him shine. </p>

<p>When his health began to deteriorate, I watched with impressionable eyes as my family began to fall apart. Throughout all of this, I quickly became aware that although we had drifted from a church structure, we never drifted from our faith. When our lives felt cluttered with obstacles that seemed insurmountable, my mother would remind me how to give my worries and fears to God, who was capable of sorting through our mess and making a way for us to move on. I know that God has a plan for me and that if I remain true to myself and continue to hear him, then I will succeed. It was at that moment when God joined me as I continued on my path. </p>

<p>My shoes, now weathered and torn, still continue to cushion my every step. Growing up with my family, living, seeing and observing the things that I have been exposed to have equipped me with a sense of readiness. I have determined my priorities and aspirations through God’s guidance and interpretation and I am prepared. My shoes are proof, they show not only where I have been, where I come from, but also what I have learned and where I am heading. At Pepperdine University, I am more ready then ever to hand off my shoes, allow others to grow from my experiences and inspire them to create their own. I am excited, anxious, mindful and ready to put on a new pair, head down a new path, continuing to grow as an individual in the hands of God. </p>
