Guide to Applying to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as an International Student for an Undergraduate Degree

Applying to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the elite public research universities located in Hung Hom, Hong Kong. Since its inception in 1937, the university is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities and is a beacon attracting innovators, orators, scholars from across the world to its global campus. However, great things require a great deal of hard work, and due to the inflated demand for admissions from countries like India & China, it has a plunging acceptance rate of just 10%, which is forecasted to go down in the coming years. The university has around 4% of international students and is known for its fantastic exchange programs with 238 partner universities scattered across the world.

English Proficiency Test Requirements

All non-local applicants are obliged to present proof of their English proficiency. Also, the university does not accept a wide variety of English language tests, so choose yours only after confirmation from the university website. There are also a good amount of exemptions if you belong to Asian or European countries. Like if you are from India and have done your senior secondary schooling or grade 12 with a score above 75% in English, you are exempted from English language tests. However, applicants might be called upon for an interview to confirm their proficiency.

  • 80 and above on the TOEFL iBT.
  • 550 and above on the TOEFL paper-based test.
  • 6.0 and above on the IELTS Academic.

ACT/SAT Requirements

Most international applicants, including Indian applicants, are not obliged to share SAT/ACT scores. But, to be considered for admission, your score in standard 12th must be above 75% in all five subjects. However, if you are from the USA, you are obligated to submit your SAT/ACT scores, satisfying the minimum benchmarks set by the university. As a rule of thumb, the higher your scores, the better your chances.

ACT 1-36 >24
SAT 400-1600 >1,190

Tuition Fee and Cost of Living

Paying tuition as an international student at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) can be expensive. However, there are several ways you can slash your costs like the PolyU Entry Scholarship (via interview), Faculty Scholarships, Post Entry Scholarships (academic & non-academic), Bursaries, the Belt and Road Scholarship, etc. On the contrary, the living costs are relatively affordable but mostly depend upon your lifestyle. Also, these figures are subject to change, so don’t forget to verify the exact figures from the university website.

Tuition Fee HK$ 145,000 ₹ 1,383,785.61
Living Expenses HK$ 40,000 ₹ 381,733.96
Total HK$ 185,000 ₹ 1,765,519.57

The conversion from HKD to INR has been made with HK$ 1 = ₹ 9.54. The cost may vary with the varying exchange rate.

Application Portal

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University E Admissions Portal is a one-stop gateway for international students. To apply, you are required to pay a non-refundable application fee of HK$ 450 (₹ 4294.40). Also, if you want to apply for scholarships, you have to apply for a separate scholarship application along with your regular admissions application.

Essay Prompts

Your personal statement is a decisive aspect of your application, based on which the admissions committee settles whether you are the perfect fit for the application or not. You are required to wrap up your personal statement within 500 words on an A4 size sheet, elaborating your reason for choosing the particular program, your expectations, how you will return the favor to humankind, etc.

College Application Deadlines

The following are the deadlines for freshmen applying to Hong Kong Polytechnic University:

Early Round 25th of November
Main Round 25th of February

*PolyU accepts applications until 30 June. Admission places are subject to availability.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is very competitive to get into, and there’s a reason why students from across the globe are eager to get admission. It’s ranked #75 among the elite 100 global universities . Located in Hong Kong, which is a hub for trade between Mainland China and the rest of the world, university graduates find well paid easy employment as soon as they graduate, and the growth opportunities are endless. Perhaps, PolyU can offer you the head start that your career needs! The university has an employment rate of 92.2%, with an average annual compensation of HKD 155,643 (INR 1,485,241). However, with plummeting acceptance rates (<10%), the competition is nothing but fierce. Maybe, you could get in touch with a student studying at PolyU, who could mentor you through the admission process . But, stumbling upon one is an Achilles heel! However, I have a better solution.

Check out my platform UniRely ! We will connect you to our expert mentors who are students studying at PolyU and are aware of the nooks and crannies of the admission process. They will guide you and help you craft a personalized application suited to your profile. Also, our mentors could provide you with insights on the scholarship process, if selected, slashing your tuition by half or even more! You could also make great use of the numerous free tools available on our website like Uni Comparision, Uni Essays, Uni Videos, etc. Sign up today and boost your chances of getting an acceptance!

PolyU Personal Statement

When I wanted to be at the scientific academy, I sent over 600 emails from professors to doctorate students and everyone in between. At the time, I was terrified and didn't sleep but had thought: How would people think of an email from a sixteen-year-old high school student? Would they laugh and show it to others or block me? Nonetheless, I didn't let those thoughts overcome my way. Because I had the vision to become a scientist, be one of the bests, and impact people's lives. But to become one of them, I knew that having a dream was not sufficient. I had to work towards it, try, fail, and adjust continuously.

Thus, I took the challenge of transforming my vision into a reality. I was aware that it must not be effortless because if it would, there wouldn't be any meaning behind that.

After writing a report under one of the professors from those email recipients, I was tremendously encouraged to continue in the scientific academy. So, it made me desire to understand more deeply and share knowledge with others, which caused me to write articles and broadcast podcasts. Meanwhile, I found meaning in connection to people through my work. Some of them motivated me to continue, whereas others helped me to see my mistakes and enhance my writing and podcasts. Yet the most uplifting part of them was organizing a two-day conference about Astronomy. Because I was connecting with academicians, inviting them to the meeting, and receiving life feedback was valuable to understand audiences' position toward science.

While writing articles, Quantum Physics constantly appeared and made me crave to comprehend it. To end my thirst, I wrote emails to quantum physicists. As a result, one of the well-known professors from Turkey, who was my reference for the Koc University Summer Research Program on Quantum Information and Biology, accepted to work with me. It was an ignition of my studies at Koc University that led to my current internship in a structural biology laboratory. Here, I am pleased to have a contribution because the research we are doing is about CO2 fixation, which would help to reduce the greenhouse effect and leave sustainable earth for the future. Therefore, every time I enter the laboratory, I feel more and more alive, knowing that this laboratory work will have words on the path to a sustainable future. The cause always made me eager to try different initiative methods that weren't part of the application. Even though some were troublesome, I wanted to be sure that we weren't missing anything so we could do our best to enhance our climate action because I knew that every contribution would be essential.

After two years, I am proud of myself for sending those emails- if I didn't do that, I wouldn't gain the most substantial value of my life: sciences are always for society and by society. Since all scientific communities work to enhance science and science exists to challenge human perception, it is nothing but All for One and One for All.

  • 升學 Personal Statement (Jupas SLP、Non-Jupas、Postgraduate)

📨 Personal Statement

FAQ: You NEED NOT submit more documents than required as non-required documents will not be considered by departments. Please check the “Additional Documents Required” section of e-prospectus for the details.

As an aspiring computer scientist, I am keen to pursue a degree in Computer Science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The university’s strong reputation as one of the top institutions to study this field is both inspiring and humbling.

To prepare for this academic journey, I have proactively acquired relevant knowledge, including coding skills, and dedicated time to self-study in areas like mathematics and computer science concepts. In addition, I plan to delve into Computer Science topics like Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and machine learning, broadening my skills beyond the curriculum.

Participating in extracurricular activities has played a crucial role in my personal development. While my experiences with 3D printing and robotics workshops were valuable, it was working on a drone that sparked my interest in applying scientific principles to develop useful products. This experience ignited a passion for creating applications or even organizing drone performances in the future.

Throughout my academic career, I have developed a passion for understanding how technology operates and works on multiple levels. My studies have provided me with enough knowledge to begin work on coding projects as well as experience working in both Mac OS X and Windows environment. In addition, I have gained exposure with multiple programming languages such as Python, C++, Java, etc. which have helped me build the confidence necessary to continue advancing in the field.

My goal is to continue enriching my technical skills while also exploring new theories in computer science through research and projects. Participating in various related extracurricular activities, competitions, and hackatons has enabled me to gain further insight into problem-solving approach’s within the discipline, allowing me to experiment more effectively with innovative solutions.

Upon graduation, I envision myself working as a Software Engineer, engaging in projects, securing internships, and expanding my horizons internationally within five years.

I believe the courses offered by HKUST will help develop my existing strengths and provide the flexibility needed for personal growth within this subject area whereas its practical applications equipped with modern technological resources will allow for independent initiatives leading towards research opportunities that capture my interests deeply. If admitted to your program, I would channel a significant portion of my time into academics, exploring potential collaborations with school projects or competitions to enhance both my academic and practical skills. I believe that pursuing this program is a great fit for me due to its prestige and outreach within Asia Pacific region providing an excellent pathway towards pursuing higher academic goals in future if desired as well.

Personal Statement

The personal statement accomplishes a variety of goals:

  • It explains why you are choosing a career in medicine.
  • It puts a "face" to your application.
  • It helps medical schools understand your experiences, interests and values.

What Medical Schools Look For

  • Evidence that you understand the realities of medicine.
  • Your view on why you have chosen a career in medicine.
  • Your life story - How did you get to this point?
  • Your values/experiences - Why is medicine a good fit for you?

Common Pitfalls

  • Writing only about medicine and not about yourself.
  • Not giving yourself enough time to revise multiple drafts.
  • Cutting and pasting the statement from a Word document into the application, which introduces formatting errors. Make sure to write statement in a text-only program like Notepad or directly into the essay.
  • Not proofing the final draft carefully.
  • Not being aware of the tone of essay; coming across as arrogant or entitled to a career in medicine.
  • Relying only on your ideas of medicine and not showing how you tested your decision with experiences.
  • Writing a personal statement that could apply to any applicant.
  • Repeating information that can be found elsewhere in the application.
  • Start early. If you procrastinate on a personal statement, you delay the whole application process.
  • Overwrite at the beginning of the process. Any extra material can often be used in secondary applications and preparing for interviews.
  • Edit the final draft to 5,300 characters (including spaces) for AMCAS statements (usually a page and a half single spaced).
  • Personal statement workshops   are held in winter and spring quarters. They are designed to help you begin the writing process.   See our events page   for upcoming workshops.
  • Individual advising appointments   are available for preparation and feedback.   Book an appointment to meet with an advisor .
  • You can review examples of successful personal statements at the HPA office. They are available for viewing at the reception desk.
  • Check out   Essay Workshop 101 on the Student Doctor Network   website for tips and considerations.
  • If you need style help,   The Writing Place   can help with grammar and expression (but not with content).
