Social Media and Content Marketing

With platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and more, there is a huge demand for writers who know the ins and outs of these online marketing platforms. Sometimes, these positions are called social media managers or virtual assistants, and other times, digital content specialists. Besides writing social media updates, you may also create content for blogs, ads, newsletter campaigns, video scripts, and other forms of content creation.

General knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) is generally needed for these roles. Some companies may require applicants to have a bachelor’s degree in marketing, advertising, or a related field. However, depending on your experience level, some companies may substitute a degree for experience.

With travel blogging, you’ll write your own content, publish it, and then make money through activities like affiliate marketing, advertising networks, selling products, and paid sponsorships. I began pursuing a career in Copy and SEO Optimization Writing about a year ago. I had at this point been studying the art of Copywriting for about a year. I paid for a course thru the AWAI Institute and even though there was great information, not a lot of support on finding real work. I began working construction last May to make ends meet and because of the long days and hard work, my career in Copy and SEO writing came to a complete stop. I have in the last few weeks began to restart the machine and even took this week off work to start applying for writing jobs and try to keep the dream alive. I go back to work in 2 days and I am concerned the momentum I have built will fall off once again. Even worse, the situation me and my kids have been in will not get any better if I remain doing the same thing. This may seem a rather daft question, and it is, but: I’m a man. Now, can men, even incredibly heterosexual ones such as me (lol), utilize and take advantage of these services as a means to market their writerly talents? Also, I have found that, for me personally, nonfiction writing is easier than fiction. However, I must strongly emphasize that this opinion is tempered by and only true of those times when one finds that they can be just as creative and imaginative and fluid and free and freewheeling in their nonfiction as they are in their fiction. To that end, I have furthermore discovered that, for me personally, in addition to the writing of certain essays and ersatz/satirical articles and the prosy like, poetry is also relatively easy to write. Indeed, it is EASIER to write. At least, it is for me, anyway. Now, don’t get me wrong, I also like to fiction, but I can’t write it as speedily and with as much insouciant ease as I can various forms of essay and poetry. Again, that’s just me, though. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity of using this forum as a means of getting a few things off my chest. However, I have one last query to advance: As I have recently written a great, semiautobiographical (or perhaps pseudoautobiographical) seriocomical/jocoserious short story that has a great deal of erotic imagery, action and description in it, I wonder where I might publish this story? It is not, I must stress, despite it’s sexual nature and the intrinsic, crucial importance of the eroticism therein, a bona fide erotic story. It is not erotica, as they call it. It is far above and beyond the trashy simplicity of erotica. Yet, as I said, the middle section of it is a sex scene, but one that I twist and manipulate every sort of human emotion out of, and that sex scene is not gratuitous, it is essential to the story and the plot. I am not one to, even in the writing of the very few forays into erotica and eroticism that I have attempted over the past seven years, write of sexuality overmuch, or at all, or gratuitously, but as this was integral, I saw no reason to withhold the sexual from the bounds of my prose.

Regardless, and for comedic effect a few very dirty vulgarities and smutty colloquialisms are used within the context of my tale, but still I wonder: Who would publish such an esoteric, unidentifiable, eclectic work?

I am rightly proud of the story, it being one of the best and funniest yet most strangely sad stories I’ve ever written, and long to see it in all the unbounded glory of print.

(I did not mean this thing to turn out to be some abridged story of my life, but as the next revelation that I am about to parenthetically reveal is somewhat imperative, I feel I must, if only as a means to create an understanding of me, my works and, most especially, my STYLE and TECHNIQUE as a writer, share the following bit of semi-personal data with you: Namely, that I am an avid reader in general and in particular of the greatest Anglo-American/European/Russian/Near-Eastern/Mediterranean writers of all manner of prose of the past several millennia, but with an especial focus on the greatest writers of the 1700’s-1960’s: and before and beyond: and it is them and their monumental and intellectually-stimulating, descriptive, sublime works that inform all my writing….therefore, that’s why I’ve elected to write in the way in which I’ve done here….not to impress, except by diffusion and osmosis, but rather because it is just the general, natural way I always have of speaking and, most especially, writing. Thank you bearing with me through this difficult digression….which, if I was going to submit and publish this essay-length comment, I think that would make an excellent title for it! lol)

All this being said if you’re a fast writer, and you don’t spend a lot of time on each article, maybe you could make minimum wage working on Demand Studio stuff. Which would be cool if you’re working from home and that’s all the money you were looking for. But long-term, other “freelance” writing jobs would be likely to net you a lot more. Blogging is my favorite.

I’ve done quite a bit of freelance writing, myself–not the website, but jobs you hunt down for yourself in corporate America–and the income can be excellent, but often requires a lot more personal marketing or a good list of personal contacts. And you’ll need to be able to prove you can do the work with a combination of references, education, and samples. You also need to have the good aptitude for customer service, so you can keep your clients happy.

The one thing that stands out to me is they’re hiring writers, but nowhere on the website are they selling the articles to clients. Most legit sites have a page for customers and another for writers. They are based in India, not the US — I’d steer clear of this one.

Would anyone happen to know a good place to write opinion articles? Maybe 300 to 500 words for $10 a pop? Whenever I find these lists of blogs and publications that pay, they are almost never looking for opinion. Maybe the niche is not profitable.

(I ran a promotion a few years ago for that rate, so perhaps you saw an old page.) I pay $50 per guest post, but if I am particularly wowed with a pitch I pay $200. The 21 Best Side Hustles for Writers: Get Paid $1000+ per Month

What are the best side hustles for writers?

The good news is writing is a great, in-demand skill to make money from. Yes, even in the age of Chat GPT , there are lots of writing side hustles that can earn you money in your spare time.

I compiled this list based on:

• My own 15+ years of experience as a writer
• Interviews with dozens of other side hustling and professional writers
• The potential earning power for each option

Ready? Let’s do it!

1. Build a Helpful Website

2. sales copywriting, 3. freelance writing, 4. tutoring, 5. teaching online, 6. create an online course, 7. email newsletter, 8. publish a book, 9. children’s publishing, 10. proofreading and editing service, 11. writing coach, 12. ghostwriting, 13. creative writing workshops, 14. social media management, 15. resume and cover letter writing, 16. mystery shopping, 17. virtual assistant service, 18. live chat customer support, 19. transcription service, 20. translation, 21. online surveys, the best writing side hustles: your turn, looking for more side hustle help.

If you enjoy writing, building an informative website is the first side hustle I’d consider. I wouldn’t call it “blogging,” but more creating content that answers people’s questions.

I’ve done this several times, including with this site and another project that  earned over $500,000 over its lifetime . Websites make money in several different ways, but most commonly through:

• advertising
• affiliate partnerships
• selling your own products and services

One trend that’s been successful recently is what I’ll call “the modern comparison shopping site.” This model involves creating in-depth content comparing and contrasting two or more products in your niche.

For example,  Fin vs. Fin  does this really well with direct-to-consumer brands. Similarly, Tami Smith employed  the same strategy with fitness equipment .

Daniel Throssell was an electrical engineer working 12-hour shifts on a remote island off the coast of Australia.

He stumbled upon  copywriting as a side hustle , and landed his first jobs on  Upwork . “Because I had no experience, I just resolved to out-prepare my competition, and overdeliver on all my jobs,” Daniel explained.

Within a year, he was charging  $200 an hour  for his work — and left the engineering job behind.

Another common side hustle for writers is freelance writing. Most freelance writers get paid on a per-word basis, with rates ranging from $0.05-0.35 per word.  That adds up to around $50-$350 per 1000-word article.

(This article, for the sake of comparison, is around 2,000 words.)

I sat down with Georgia Austin, who found customers for her  content writing service on Fiverr . As demand increased, she raised rates and ultimately hired other writers to help fulfill all the work!

Writing is such an important skill, and one that many students struggle with. That’s why there’s an opportunity to turn your writing prowess into a tutoring business.

You could focus on English vocabulary, spelling, essay writing, creative writing, or reading comprehension.

And there’s money in this niche too — one Side Hustle Nation reader reported earning $1000 a week with his part-time tutoring business .

Platforms like  Wyzant  help connect students with tutors. As a tutor, you get set your own rate (typically between  $20-60 per hour ) and availability.

While one-to-one tutoring can be rewarding and even pretty lucrative, it’s still trading time for money. One side hustle with a little more scale is to teach an online group class through a platform like  Outschool .

On The Side Hustle Show, Jade Weatherington shared how she was earning  $10,000 a month on the platform , primarily teaching middle school English writing classes.

Who knew all that 5-paragraph essay practice would pay off!

The peer-to-peer education marketplace focuses on students ages 3-18, and has courses on nearly every topic imaginable.

Since late 2014, I’ve earned  over $20,000  on  Udemy  from a course I created about self-publishing.

With Udemy, you can create a video course in your area of expertise, and put it up for sale on their platform of more than 50 million students.

I think there’s a cool scaleable side hustle for writers in creating a “niche newsletter .” In this model, you email out your favorite content in a given niche on a daily or weekly basis.

The topic you choose could be based on your writing experience, or any other hobby you’re into . Since you’re probably already consuming content in the niche, it would be a valuable service to curate the best of the best for subscribers.

For example, Danielle Desir-Corbett took her grant-writing expertise and started a newsletter called Grants for Creators . With both free and paid versions , she shares grant opportunities she finds every two weeks.

Once you have people paying attention, you can monetize with affiliate offers, advertising, or your own products and services. This is a side hustle that’s low overhead, relatively simple to manage, and may even have a lucrative exit strategy — the popular daily business newsletter Morning Brew sold for a reported $75 million !

Self-publishing is one of my favorite writing side hustles. It’s earned me over $80,000 over the last decade.

My titles have all been non-fiction so far, but fiction actually sells more as a category . Through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing , you can set your own price and earn a 70% author royalty on Kindle books sold between $2.99 and $9.99.

Matthew Ralph is a children’s book author from England, who quit his full-time marketing job to focus on his publishing and freelancing business.

His bestselling work to date is  Sam the Speedy Sloth . The idea of which came to him while walking through an airport, and by the time his flight landed, the book was almost written!

Matt has since added more books to his portfolio, while freelancing to help other self-publishing authors.

If you have an eye for detail, there’s  money to be made as a proofreader  or editor.

Like I mentioned above, self-publishing is exploding, and all those authors (at least the serious ones) need help editing their work.

For this side hustle, I found my first clients on  Fiverr , but ultimately established positive word of mouth referrals in some Facebook Groups and among students of a popular self-publishing course.

I started out charging $100 for every 10,000 words, but slowly inched up rates as I improved. (And as a bonus, I got paid to read some pretty interesting books !)

According to PayScale.com, proofreaders can make an average of $12-$30/hour.

Check out companies like ProofreadingServices.com to apply for a remote part-time or full-time position.

Through her business, Paper Raven Books , Morgan Gist MacDonald helps authors turn their ideas into books they can be proud of. 

The service starts at $10,000 and includes:

• narrative arc outlining
• accountability check-ins
• editing and design
• building a launch and marketing plan

Could you start a similar service for first-time authors?

My friend Joshua Lisec is a freelance writer turned sought-after ghostwriter , specializing in entrepreneurship books. Over the last few years, he’s helped create over 80 titles and built a multi-6-figure ghostwriting business.

When we last spoke, he had a unique way of generating qualified leads through YouTube .

Jeff DiOrio, a math teacher and high school dean in Illinois started teaching after school chess lessons . Today, EliteChess is a 6-figure side hustle with classes both in-person and online.

I believe there’s an opportunity to create a similar business for students (or adults) to get together and just write. You could provide story prompts, guidance on structure, and constructive feedback.

Another side hustle idea for writers is to manage Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. These are still primarily “writing first” platforms, meaning if you can craft compelling hooks and threads, you can help other business owners grow their following.

For example, Pete Macleod ( @petecodes ) turned this into a $10k/month business . Creating Twitter and LinkedIn content was something he enjoyed doing anyway, and began offering it as a service to other content creators .

Mike McRitchie has a unique writing service, specializing in cover letters and LinkedIn profiles for the telecom industry . 

He’s been doing this for years on the side from his day job. Because of his industry expertise, he’s able to command premium rates. 

And since the outcome of a strong resume and cover letter is so strong — a new job — candidates are happy to pay for help in this area.

Mystery shopping isn’t directly related to writing, but many of the tasks involve writing a report about your experience at the store or restaurant.

Jenn Trinidad reported earning $2,000 a month as a mystery shopper . 

Virtual assistants generally charge  $15-40 an hour to provide remote administrative support to clients. Those tasks might include:

• Drafting social media posts
• Managing email and scheduling appointments
• Creating blog content or email newsletters
• Providing customer support

If that sounds like a fun side hustle you can set up shop on your own  or jump on board with an established VA company.

FlexJobs is the leading site for work from home jobs. With more than 50 career categories, you’re sure to find options here for your writing experience.

One area that comes to mind is live chat customer support jobs, where skills like compassion, speed, and multitasking are critical.

FlexJobs does charge a nominal monthly fee to access their listings, but you’ll easily earn that back — and then some — with just one job.

Pro Tip: Before you join, use their job search filter to see what part-time positions are currently being advertised for.

When you see something that’s a great fit, you can join the site to apply.

Transcription—turning audio recordings into text—is often a part-time work-from-home position. Many transcribers specialize in a given industry, like medical, legal, or podcast transcriptions.

Several sites, including  Rev.com , hire transcribers. If you’re fast, you might be able to earn  up to $15 an hour.

More and more businesses are realizing the importance of translation. In fact, the employment of interpreters and translators is projected to  grow 19% from 2018 to 2028 .

That’s pretty surprising in the age of Google Translate, right?

Spanish, French, Arabic and the Asian languages are all  in high demand .

However, being a translator isn’t just about translating. It’s about having strong writing skills and an understanding of the niche.

Finally, an old fall back of pretty much every list of ways to make extra money: surveys.

These definitely won’t make you rich, but they are an easy way to for writers to make a little extra money in between projects or during breaks in your day.

Frequently asked questions

All Scribbr editors are native speakers, which means that they have spoken English since early childhood. We only work with native speakers because these editors understand the cadence of the language and have mastered its idiomatic forms.

It is difficult for non-native speakers to acquire these traits, even if they are fluent and have spoken the language throughout their adult lives. Since our customers wish to work only with native speakers, we have no flexibility in this requirement.

We don’t rely solely on nativeness. Our editors are vetted through a rigorous application process, through which they are asked to demonstrate technical grammar knowledge, familiarity with academic writing, and an understanding of editing principles. All successful applicants also complete our Scribbr Academy training program, where they learn how to edit for students.

Editor application process

Editing for students is different from other kinds of editing. The Scribbr Academy is the last step of your application process, but it comes with some benefits. During your time in the Academy, we will train you on how to perform Scribbr’s services and edit in the Scribbr style . The training also features practical elements, such as one-on-one coaching, that are beneficial to you . In this way, we will prepare you to face real-life student orders and jump start your editing career at Scribbr.

In order to become a qualified editor at Scribbr, you will need to apply the learnings from the Academy and pass 2 – 5 simulation orders (the exact number depends on performance).

You must apply through our website and complete all the steps in the Scribbr editor application process.

It is not possible to see the answers to our quiz . If you’re looking for more insights on related issues, check out Scribbr’s language articles and websites that address grammar and writing issues.

If you’re accepted as an editor in the Scribbr Academy , the information package you gain access to includes an article with the correct answers to a previous version of our language quiz.

On average, you can expect to earn approximately €20 to €30 per hour as a Scribbr editor .

The earnings are calculated based on fixed per-word rates that we have set for different kinds of assignments. We will communicate these rates to you as soon as you are in your Scribbr Academy .

The per-word rate for each order is determined by:

• The editing deadline (the shorter the deadline, the higher the rate); and
• The services purchased (whether a Structure or Clarity Check is booked on top of standard proofreading and editing ).

In our Scribbr Academy , we train you to edit as efficiently as possible—which will help you to increase the speed at which you work. For example, we include a Scribbr Word macro that you can use to easily utilize standardized in-text comments.

Incoming editors should be highly knowledgeable regarding grammar, academic style, and the conventions of both US English and UK English.

You’ll need this knowledge to not only edit student papers but also provide individualized feedback for students.

We also expect new editors to have read widely in a variety of fields and to feel comfortable editing academic texts in a range of subjects, including the hard sciences and the social sciences. New editors likewise need to be familiar with the structure of different types of academic texts, including dissertations, theses, reports, and essays.

Finally, you’ll need to be comfortable working with Microsoft Word, including its Track Changes feature.

Since Scribbr specializes in academic editing for students , we require our editors to be thesis and academic writing experts. Every Scribbr editor has a thorough understanding of academic writing conventions and research concepts used in higher education.

Most of the papers we receive are theses and dissertations. We prefer to work with editors who know first-hand how difficult it is to write a thesis, as they can offer constructive and relevant advice to our students.

Therefore, we only accept applications from editors with a university degree.

However, a university degree alone is not enough. All applicants must also demonstrate technical grammar knowledge and fundamental editing skills during the application process.  Applicants must also complete our rigorous Scribbr Academy training program before they can join the editor team.

Incoming editors must be familiar with the conventions of both US English and UK English and able to consistently follow the related rules. However, if you’re only familiar with one of these dialects, don’t despair! Getting up to speed on the major differences between the two systems is definitely doable. Our Knowledge Base is a good place to start.

If you are familiar with the conventions of US and UK English and can edit according to them, you are more than welcome to apply. At this time, however, we cannot accept applicants who are only familiar with other English dialects. The reason is that the vast majority of our clients require their papers to be written in US or UK English.

The application process consists of three steps that you must successfully complete to become an active editor within our system:

• Scribbr language quiz : 30 minutes
• Scribbr application assignment : 2.5 hours
• Scribbr Academy : 2 – 3 weeks (the Academy has to be completed within 4 weeks to be able to pass)

The speed at which you are able to complete the application process depends on your availability and the level of your work you submit. For us, it is important not only that you edit according to our guidelines, but also that you feel you have enough experience with us to make the leap to being an active Scribbr editor.

Throughout the process, you will receive feedback from experienced editors – so no matter what happens, you won’t be wasting your time!

When we receive a new order, we choose the most suitable Scribbr editor based on the following factors:

• Availability . If you would like to receive a lot of orders, you can indicate that you are available immediately. We will then try to send more assignments your way.
• Interest in the subject . We will not be as fast to send you orders that are from fields you have not marked as preferred.
• Returning client . We will automatically send you orders from a returning student whose work you have already edited, unless he or she specifically requests otherwise.
