Polygons in the Coordinate Plane Worksheets

What Are Polygons? Look around you; you see different objects with different shapes. Some are perfectly equal while others are peculiar. Pick a square. Can you see how its lines are equal and closed at every end? Now take a rectangle or a triangle. They all have equal sides and closed ends. They are called polygons. In simple words, any flat figure that is enclosed, made of straight lines, has more than three sides and has many angles is known as a polygon. The sides are identified with the name the polygon has been given. For example, a triangle is a 3-sided polygon. A square is a 4-sided polygon. A pentagon has 5-sides, a hexagon has 6-sides and so on. Like many other shapes, polygons can be regular and irregular. Regular Polygons - When the sides in a polygon are equal, and the number of angles is equal to the number of lines, it is called a regular polygon. Irregular Polygons - But when a polygon's sides don't match, and the angles are not the same, the polygon is known as an irregular polygon.

Aligned Standard: Grade 6 Geometry - 6.G.A.3

  • Find a Point Step-by-step Lesson - You're given three points of a rectangle. You are asked to find the fourth point using a grid.
  • Guided Lesson - We take this skill and now apply it to maps.
  • Guided Lesson Explanation - I talk you through this one. I started by drawing it, but realized the grids we not big enough to do it that way.
  • Practice Worksheet - Five pages of walk thoroughs with this one. The skill is covered well.
  • Area of Shapes on a Coordinate Grid Five Pack - Use the coordinates to help you solve these.
  • Matching Worksheet - I never knew how much information you could learn from just four points on a grid.
  • Area of Polygons and Circles Worksheet Five Pack - Go crazy with this gathering of triangles and rectangles.
  • Answer Keys - These are for all the unlocked materials above.

Homework Sheets

We start with an outline and find the distance between points. We then bring it to life by making them real.

  • Homework 1 - If the points on the coordinate plane below are the three vertices of a rectangle, coordinate the fourth vertex.
  • Homework 2 - How do you know? What are the length and width of the rectangle?
  • Homework 3 - Find the area of the given figure.

Practice Worksheets

I purposely threw perimeter in here to help the kids focus on the distance between the points and its meaning.

  • Practice 1 - Represent the locations as points on a coordinate grid with a unit of 1 mile. What shape might you make if you connect the points on the grid?
  • Practice 2 - Find the area of the shape formed. Find the perimeter of the shape formed.
  • Practice 3 - Which shape forms between these four icons?

Math Skill Quizzes

These cover a vast number of skills and cross over several standards.

  • Quiz 1 - If the points on the coordinate plane below are the three vertices of a rectangle, find the fourth vertex.
  • Quiz 2 - What shape might you make if you connect the points on the grid? Approximate the area.
  • Quiz 3 - A football field is rectangular. The football field is 20 feet wide and 30 feet from goal line to goal line. What is the area of the football field?

Plot horizontal and vertical lines on a coordinate plane and find patterns in their coordinates.

Common Core Standards

Core standards.

The core standards covered in this lesson

5.G.A.1 — Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., x-axis and x-coordinate, y-axis and y-coordinate).

5.G.A.2 — Represent real world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, and interpret coordinate values of points in the context of the situation.

The essential concepts students need to demonstrate or understand to achieve the lesson objective

  • Draw horizontal and vertical lines in the coordinate plane.
  • Understand that horizontal lines are parallel to the x -axis and perpendicular to the y -axis and vertical lines are perpendicular to the x -axis and parallel to the y -axis.
  • Discern the pattern that horizontal lines all have the same y -value and vertical lines all have the same x -value.
  • Name the coordinates of a point that lies on a horizontal or vertical line, including without needing or being able to plot that point.

Suggestions for teachers to help them teach this lesson
