Our research facilities
We have access to high quality research facilities across our hospital sites and at partners’ sites
Our research takes place across facilities accessible to patients involved in studies, in addition to purely focused areas where researchers undertake their work. Many of these facilities are jointly run with Newcastle University and funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR)
Newcastle Clinical Research Facility
Supported by the NIHR, the Newcastle Clinical Research Facility (NIHR CRF) is a partnership between Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University. It carries out complex medical research in adults and children to test new treatments for the first time (known as early phase trials).
Research takes place across three main sites:
- The CRF in the Leazes Wing of the Royal Victoria Infirmary
- The Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU), a patient-friendly facility which focuses on ageing and age-related conditions such as dementia, on the Campus for Ageing and Vitality in Newcastle.

The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre
This patient-friendly unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle carries out all phases of cancer trials. It is based within the Northern Centre for Cancer Care.
The centre is supported by the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the generosity of local people and focusses on clinical research into new anti-cancer drug therapies and techniques.
Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)– ageing and long-term conditions
Funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is a partnership between Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University.
The BRC is based at the Campus for Ageing and Vitality and focusses on improving lives through testing and developing new approaches to tackling health problems associated with ageing and long-term conditions.
Research themes include: dementia, liver disease, musculoskeletal disease, neuromuscular disease, skin and oral disease.
National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Patient Recruitment Centre: Newcastle
The Patient Recruitment Centre (PRC): Newcastle focuses on research in common, chronic conditions and contribute to improving our regional population health.
It is based at the and aims to drive research participation and extend the reach of our traditional hospital settings to engage with the broader communities and populations we aim to serve.
The centre can provide a bespoke service to Trust investigators who wish to work in partnership with the facility, and deliver a late phase portfolio of research in common chronic conditions, extending the reach of Newcastle Hospitals and building additional capability.
Patients can register their interest through the Research+Me registry .
John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre
The John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre (JWMDC) runs multidisciplinary children and adult clinics for over 2500 NHS patients per year with a range of neuromuscular diseases (those that affect the nerves that control certain muscles in your body) throughout the north of England.

It plays a strategic role in realising the ambition to be a leader in translational research bringing benefits to patients and society.

About NIHR Newcastle Clinical Research Facility
The NCRF incorporates the Clinical Research Facility located at the Leazes Wing of the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI CRF), the Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) and the Dental Clinical Research Facility (Dental CRF) located in the Newcastle Dental Hospital.
The clinical and operational team have a wide range of skills and experience in clinical research trials from Phase I to Phase IV, with both adults and children. They can advise and run these from costings through to clinical delivery and data management.
Researchers should contact us at the earliest stage if they are planning to initiate a clinical trial and are looking for support.
NCRF supports translational research stages T1- T2 and provides support with pilot clinical evaluation and experimental medicine , as well as clinical evaluation and regulatory approval .

- Commercial Enterprise Team The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The Commercial Enterprise Team at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals (NuTH) NHS Foundation Trust supports research active staff from within the Trust. These are staff who are looking to work with commercial partners to deliver projects.
We also work closely with the Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO) to input on intellectual property requirements within the wider NHS. This particularly involves projects with commercial potential.
Researchers at NuTH should approach the Commercial Enterprise Team for support when they:
- identify the need to access proprietary technology of an external supplier
- consider their project to have commercial potential.
It’s always best to consider the intellectual property position at an early stage when developing a project proposal.
The NuTH NHS Foundation Trust Commercial Enterprise Team primarily supports stages T2-T3 of the Translational Research Pathway. It provides support with clinical evaluation and regulatory approval , as well as adoption and diffusion .

Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU)
The primary aim of the Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) is to facilitate the development of early assessment and intervention strategies targeted at age-associated degenerative conditions.
CARU staff and facilities provide a high quality, patient-friendly environment for phase II-IV clinical studies in the older patient. They employ experienced research nurses with specific training in commonly used, relevant assessment instruments.
Clinical trials related to dementia and Parkinson’s are carried out in CARU and are supported by a high quality research infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities.
The Clinical Ageing Research Unit (CARU) is led by Director, Nicola Pavese who is Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at Newcastle University, and is connected to the dementia research theme as part of the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre.
Facilities at CARU
The Clinical Ageing Research Unit is staffed by a team of experienced and well-qualified research nurses and research professionals who are trained to Good Clinical Practice standards.
They provide general support for clinical trials with:
- experienced research team including nurses, trials coordinator and data managers
- costing of research projects and account management
- research and development ethics and all other regulatory document completion
- General Clinical Facilities – consulting and assessment rooms with supporting facilities
